-
- This manual in considered to be an overview of the SYStem MENU system.
- All commands and screens are covered, however, the on-line system help menu
- will provide a reasonable reference.
-
- To install the program place the distribution disk in drive A and type
- install. The installation program will then ask what drive you want to
- install the menu on. This is the drive that will be used for storage of all
- files. THIS DRIVE MUST BE ACCESSIBLE TO THE PROGRAM AT ALL TIMES. You will
- be asked if a RAM drive should be used for execution. The execution files are
- the menu configuration file (SYSMENU.CFG) and the batch file to execute the
- programs (SMUCOMND.BAT). These files are relatively small, placing them on a
- RAM disk will increase the execution time slightly and create a \MMenu
- directory on the ram disk. You will then be asked if the main menu should use
- a RAM disk. if there is space the main menu files (those having the extension
- .SMU) will be placed on the ram drive that you select. If there is not enough
- space for all of the files then the menu will execute off of the drive on
- which the SYStem MENU was installed.
-
- To execute the program either copy the SYSMENU.BAT file to your root
- directory or directory in the path, or add \mmenu to the path. To start the
- program type SYSMENU and press return. A sub menu may be loaded at start up
- by typing "sysmenu XX" where XX is the key for the desired menu.
-
- Notes to version 1.B users:
-
- The files used by SYStem MENU version 2 are of
- the same format as the files used by SYStem MENU
- version 1.B or are new and will be created.
-
- The keys used by version 2 are the same as
- version 1.B except where new functions have been
- added. You may want to review the submenu keys
- (those begining with '&').
-
- Version 2 will install "on top of' version 1.B,
- that is, you can install version 2 without damage to
- your version 1.B files. However due to the addition
- of the data path you may be able to shorten some
- command files.
-
- Notes to new users:
-
- When the program starts you will be shown the
- main menu. This menu will be empty. You must start
- by adding a key to the program. For more informatin
- on how this is done please consult the on-line help
- (press "?[Return]") sections on adding a menu entry
- (press "+[Return]"), and, system requests
- ("$[Return]").
-
- Once you understand how to add a program to the
- menu you may wish to examine the reading and writing

-
-
- of command files. This makes editing menu entries
- much easier and will facilitate the moving of
- entries from one sub menu to another.
-
- To add a submenu consult the on-line help "&+"
- entry.
-
- A note on windows: Each main window has the window title on the top
- border. Minor windows will display some information on the bottom border.
- Most main windows are stacked so that you can tell at any time what menu is
- loaded, if the directory of sub menus is displayed, and whether you are
- performing any other main task.
-
- A note on the Data Path: The data path is the directory from which the
- menu will begin executing the command file. This is the default data location
- for all programs in the sub menu. The default data path for the main menu is
- the root directory of the drive on which the menu is installed.

- Return to DOS (*)
- To exit the SYStem MENU type "*[Return]" and you
- will be returned to DOS. This is the method that should
- be used when you are finished with the program.
-
- DOS Access (Shell) (@)
- Typing "@[Return]" will provide you access to DOS
- without leaving the SYStem MENU. You will have to type
- "exit" to be returned to the menu. If you attempt to
- reload the SYStem MENU by typing "sysmenu" the amount of
- memory that you will have available will be reduced by
- approx 130K.

- Add Key to Menu (+)
- If you type "+[Return]" at the menu prompt you will
- be taken to the add menu entry screen. You must provide
- A key (1 or 2 characters) to load the program with and an
- identification to be displayed with the key on the menu.
- You must then enter the DOS commands used to run the
- program. This should include any substitution of drives,
- changes of directory, etc. You can determine what
- commands you will need by reading the batch files that
- you currently use to execute your programs. Note that
- all programs in a menu will run from the data path. The
- data path is displayed in the upper left hand corner of
- the screen. If you need to use a replaceable parameter
- you can use the {$Iprompt} input request. More
- information on the format of this system function can be
- found in the on-line help program. If you want to
- password the menu entry you must use the {$P} system
- function. More information on this function can be found
- in the on-line help program.
-
- Delete Key from Menu (-)
- Typing "-[Return]" will allow you to delete a key
- from the menu. You must enter the key that you want to
- delete, the password it applicable, and then verify that
- you really want to delete the entry. Note: Once an
- entry is deleted there is no way, short of typing the
- commands back in, of restoring it.
-
- Backup SYStem MENU data files (!)
- This function will create a DOS backup of your
- system files. This will backup to the A drive.
-
- Write A Command File (>)
- This function will allow you to write the command
- file associated with a key on a menu to a disk file
- provided that you know the password if there is one.
- This is used to edit long command files when testing or
- to transfer menu entries from one sub menu to another.
-
- Read A Command File (<)
- This function will allow you to read an ASCII
- command file. This file should contain the commands as
- you would type them in at the Add Key to Menu (+)
- function.
-
- Display Sub Menu Directory (&&)
- This function displays the sub menu directory. You
- may then load any sub menu listed by typing the key.
- WHEN THE SUB MENU DIRECTORY IS BEING DISPLAYED SOME OF
- THE SYSTEM KEYS PERFORM SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS OR
- ARE NOT VALID.

-
-
-
-
- Return to Main Menu (&*)
- This function will allow you to return to the main
- menu from any sub menu. Typing "&*" will cause the main
- menu to be loaded.
-
- Load A Sub Menu (&)
- This is a shortcut to load a sub menu if you know
- the key. Type "&[Return]" and you will be asked for the
- key for the sub menu that you wish to load. If the key
- is valid and you know the password, if applicable, the
- selected menu will be loaded. Otherwise you will be
- returned to the current menu.
-
- Create A Sub Menu (&+)
- This function will create a new sub menu. You will
- be asked for the key to use on the directory of sub
- menus, the menu name, the data path, whether the menu
- should use a RAM drive, and a password. The data path is
- the disk and directory from which all commands in the
- menu will start. This must be a valid directory at the
- time that the menu is created. The RAM drive will
- specify a drive to place the menu data files on when the
- menu is loaded. If there is not room on the RAM drive
- the menu will be run from the disk on which the SYStem
- MENU is installed. The password is capitalization
- sensitive. If you do not want a password press
- "[Return]" for the password. DO NOT FORGET THE PASSWORD.
- THE PASSWORDS ARE ENCODED IN THE FILES. THERE IS NO WAY
- TO RECOVER A LOST PASSWORD WITHOUT THE SYSBREAK PROGRAM.
-
- Delete A Sub Menu (&-)
- This is similar to the delete key from menu option
- above except that you are deleting an entire menu. All
- data for that menu will be destroyed!
-
- Edit A Sub Menu (&$)
- This function will allow you to change any of the
- data found on the create sub menu screen provided you
- know the password, if applicable.
-
- Help (?)
- This function will display the short help screen.
- If you want the long help screen enter the key for the
- function that you want help with.
