  16.                           Introduction
  17.  
  18.      GET A MAP is an easy to use program designed to let DMA 
  19. customers order maps and charts from DMA quickly and with the 
  20. least amount of effort.  It supplements Part 6, Volume II of the 
  21. DMA Catalog ("DoD Ordering Procedures and Crisis Support").
  22.  
  23.      To run this program you must have a microcomputer with an 
  24. MS-DOS or PC-DOS operating system.  If your computer is "IBM 
  25. compatible" you should have no problems.  (Please note that IBM 
  26. System II is not supported.)  You must also have a floppy disk 
  27. drive capable of reading standard 5 1/4 inch disks.
  28.  
  29.      If you are going to use a printer to print out orders, your 
  30. printer must be assigned to a device named LPT1 (same as PRN).  
  31. For the vast majority of users, this will not pose a problem.  If 
  32. you expect to send AUTODIN or MILSTRIP messages using a Joint 
  33. Message Form then the printer must have a letter quality or near 
  34. letter quality OCR font acceptable to your message center.
  35.  
  36.      It is possible that when orders are printed the output may 
  37. look incorrect.  This is probably because you are using a non-
  38. standard printer.  You may need to consult your printer manual 
  39. and change one or more dip switches in your printer.  IBM and 
  40. EPSON compatible printers should have no problems.  Most text is 
  41. straight ASCII text.  The only assumptions made are that your 
  42. printer generates a line feed when it receives a [Return] 
  43. character (ASCII code 13) and it recognizes the ASCII form feed 
  44. character (code 14).  You may want to consult with someone 
  45. familiar with microcomputers if your output looks wrong.

  47.      This software creates ONLY unclassified map and chart 
  48. orders.  
  49.     
  50.      If your microcomputer has a modem (a device allowing it to 
  51. send data over a telephone line) this program can create an order 
  52. file which can be sent electronically to the DMA Electronic Mail 
  53. box.  You will need communications software to actually send the 
  54. file as well as a Terminal Access Code from the Defense 
  55. Communications Agency for access to DDN.  You will have to 
  56. procure the communications software locally.  
  57.  
  58.      This program assumes that only single sheet paper using the 
  59. forms referenced are used.  If this is not the case the form feed 
  60. for your printer will probably assume 11 inch paper.

  62.      Feel free to make and distribute copies of this program.  
  63. GET A MAP is in the public domain and is free from all copyright 
  64. restrictions.  We request that if you make copies of the program 
  65. that you set the verify switch before copying.

  68.                           Installation
  69.  
  70.      This program can be run off a floppy disk drive, or an 
  71. internal hard disk drive, if you machine has one.  This program 
  72. will run much faster if you run it from your hard disk.  If you 
  73. feel uncomfortable using your computer's operating system, have 
  74. someone who is fairly familiar with computers do the 
  75. installation.  In any case DO NOT use this program with the 
  76. original GET A MAP disk DMA provided.  After installation place 
  77. it in a safe place.

  79.      Decide now if you will be using GET A MAP off your floppy or 
  80. hard disk.  Boot your operating system or, if your computer is 
  81. already on, exit to your operating system.  (When you see a 
  82. prompt on the screen such as A> or C> you are at the operating 
  83. system level.)  In the instructions below, when you see the word 
  84. "Type" enter the command following the colon (:) EXACTLY as shown 
  85. then press your RETURN or ENTER key.

  87.                    (Use on a Hard Disk Drive)
  88.  
  89.      Determine the Drive and Directory where GET A MAP will go.  
  90. Place the original GET A MAP disk in Floppy Drive A.  You must 
  91. place this program in a new directory.  We suggest creating a 
  92. MAPS directory on Drive C.  Then type the command in the form 
  93. A:HDINSTAL {Drive} {Directory}.  Separate each field with at 
  94. least one space.  In the example above you would type:
  95.                         A:HDINSTAL C MAPS
  96.      Installation is complete when the operating system prompt 
  97. returns.

  99.                   (Use on a Floppy Disk Drive)
  100.  
  101.      Get a blank or unneeded diskette and label it "GET A MAP 
  102. (Working Disk)".  Make sure there is no write protect tab on the 
  103. disk.
  104.      If you have TWO floppy disk drives insert your original GET 
  105. A MAP disk in Floppy Drive A then insert the blank disk in Floppy 
  106. Drive B then
  107.                         Type: A:FFINSTAL
  108.      Your installation is complete when the prompt returns.
  109.  
  110.      If you have NO hard disk and only one floppy disk then 
  111. insert then follow the instructions below carefully:
  112.           *  Insert your operating system disk in Drive A
  113.           *  Type: A:FORMAT
  114.           *  Follow the instructions.  You want to format the 
  115. blank Working Disk.  Remember, anything on this disk will be 
  116. erased!
  117.           *  When the prompt returns insert enter the original 
  118. GET A MAP disk in Floppy Drive A.
  119.           *  Type: COPY A:*.* B:
  120.           *  Follow the instructions.  You may have to keep 
  121. switching disks many times to copy all the files.
  122.           *  Your installation is now complete.

  124.      If you have only one Floppy Disk Drive and a hard disk drive 
  125. C enter the following command, otherwise use the installation 
  126. instructions above.
  127.                          Type: FLINSTAL
  128.      When your operating system prompt returns your installation 
  129. is complete.

  132.                        Starting GET A MAP
  133.  
  134.      If you are on the proper drive and subdirectory simply enter 
  135. the following command from your operating system prompt:

  137.                           Type: GETAMAP
  138.  
  139.      PLEASE SELECT OPTION 6 FROM THE MAIN MENU BEFORE DOING 
  140. ANYTHING!  If the GET A MAP Main Menu does not work you are 
  141. probably not on the right drive or directory.  The following 
  142. notes may help you get there:
  143.  
  144.      From the operating system, select the drive where GET A MAP 
  145. is located by typing the letter of the Drive followed by a colon.  
  146. For example:
  147.                             Type: C:
  148. to select Hard Disk Drive C.
  149.  
  150.      If using a hard disk, select the directory where GET A MAP 
  151. is by simply typing CD followed by a backslash (\) and the 
  152. directory name.  In the installation example, to select the MAPS 
  153. directory you would
  154.                           Type: CD\MAPS
  155.  
  156.      Typing GETAMAP now should start the program.
