- Introduction
-
- GET A MAP is an easy to use program designed to let DMA
- customers order maps and charts from DMA quickly and with the
- least amount of effort. It supplements Part 6, Volume II of the
- DMA Catalog ("DoD Ordering Procedures and Crisis Support").
-
- To run this program you must have a microcomputer with an
- MS-DOS or PC-DOS operating system. If your computer is "IBM
- compatible" you should have no problems. (Please note that IBM
- System II is not supported.) You must also have a floppy disk
- drive capable of reading standard 5 1/4 inch disks.
-
- If you are going to use a printer to print out orders, your
- printer must be assigned to a device named LPT1 (same as PRN).
- For the vast majority of users, this will not pose a problem. If
- you expect to send AUTODIN or MILSTRIP messages using a Joint
- Message Form then the printer must have a letter quality or near
- letter quality OCR font acceptable to your message center.
-
- It is possible that when orders are printed the output may
- look incorrect. This is probably because you are using a non-
- standard printer. You may need to consult your printer manual
- and change one or more dip switches in your printer. IBM and
- EPSON compatible printers should have no problems. Most text is
- straight ASCII text. The only assumptions made are that your
- printer generates a line feed when it receives a [Return]
- character (ASCII code 13) and it recognizes the ASCII form feed
- character (code 14). You may want to consult with someone
- familiar with microcomputers if your output looks wrong.
-
- This software creates ONLY unclassified map and chart
- orders.
-
- If your microcomputer has a modem (a device allowing it to
- send data over a telephone line) this program can create an order
- file which can be sent electronically to the DMA Electronic Mail
- box. You will need communications software to actually send the
- file as well as a Terminal Access Code from the Defense
- Communications Agency for access to DDN. You will have to
- procure the communications software locally.
-
- This program assumes that only single sheet paper using the
- forms referenced are used. If this is not the case the form feed
- for your printer will probably assume 11 inch paper.
-
- Feel free to make and distribute copies of this program.
- GET A MAP is in the public domain and is free from all copyright
- restrictions. We request that if you make copies of the program
- that you set the verify switch before copying.
-
-
- Installation
-
- This program can be run off a floppy disk drive, or an
- internal hard disk drive, if you machine has one. This program
- will run much faster if you run it from your hard disk. If you
- feel uncomfortable using your computer's operating system, have
- someone who is fairly familiar with computers do the
- installation. In any case DO NOT use this program with the
- original GET A MAP disk DMA provided. After installation place
- it in a safe place.
-
- Decide now if you will be using GET A MAP off your floppy or
- hard disk. Boot your operating system or, if your computer is
- already on, exit to your operating system. (When you see a
- prompt on the screen such as A> or C> you are at the operating
- system level.) In the instructions below, when you see the word
- "Type" enter the command following the colon (:) EXACTLY as shown
- then press your RETURN or ENTER key.
-
- (Use on a Hard Disk Drive)
-
- Determine the Drive and Directory where GET A MAP will go.
- Place the original GET A MAP disk in Floppy Drive A. You must
- place this program in a new directory. We suggest creating a
- MAPS directory on Drive C. Then type the command in the form
- A:HDINSTAL {Drive} {Directory}. Separate each field with at
- least one space. In the example above you would type:
- A:HDINSTAL C MAPS
- Installation is complete when the operating system prompt
- returns.
-
- (Use on a Floppy Disk Drive)
-
- Get a blank or unneeded diskette and label it "GET A MAP
- (Working Disk)". Make sure there is no write protect tab on the
- disk.
- If you have TWO floppy disk drives insert your original GET
- A MAP disk in Floppy Drive A then insert the blank disk in Floppy
- Drive B then
- Type: A:FFINSTAL
- Your installation is complete when the prompt returns.
-
- If you have NO hard disk and only one floppy disk then
- insert then follow the instructions below carefully:
- * Insert your operating system disk in Drive A
- * Type: A:FORMAT
- * Follow the instructions. You want to format the
- blank Working Disk. Remember, anything on this disk will be
- erased!
- * When the prompt returns insert enter the original
- GET A MAP disk in Floppy Drive A.
- * Type: COPY A:*.* B:
- * Follow the instructions. You may have to keep
- switching disks many times to copy all the files.
- * Your installation is now complete.
-
- If you have only one Floppy Disk Drive and a hard disk drive
- C enter the following command, otherwise use the installation
- instructions above.
- Type: FLINSTAL
- When your operating system prompt returns your installation
- is complete.
-
-
- Starting GET A MAP
-
- If you are on the proper drive and subdirectory simply enter
- the following command from your operating system prompt:
-
- Type: GETAMAP
-
- PLEASE SELECT OPTION 6 FROM THE MAIN MENU BEFORE DOING
- ANYTHING! If the GET A MAP Main Menu does not work you are
- probably not on the right drive or directory. The following
- notes may help you get there:
-
- From the operating system, select the drive where GET A MAP
- is located by typing the letter of the Drive followed by a colon.
- For example:
- Type: C:
- to select Hard Disk Drive C.
-
- If using a hard disk, select the directory where GET A MAP
- is by simply typing CD followed by a backslash (\) and the
- directory name. In the installation example, to select the MAPS
- directory you would
- Type: CD\MAPS
-
- Typing GETAMAP now should start the program.
