  1. This disk contains the Release 1.05 version of the ATK tools.

  3. The ATK is a collection of application software designed to facilitate
  4. the development, analysis, and maintenance of a set of DFDs (data flow
  5. diagrams) and their associated data dictionary:
  6.  
  7.   + A GRAPHIC EDITOR, called GED, which allows DFDs to be interactively
  8. entered and manipulated.  Unlike a generic graphics package, GED is
  9. specifically designed to work with standard DFD symbology and
  10. conventions. GED produces an ASCII format file as output, which can be
  11. read (and modified) by text editors as well as the other tools in the
  12. package.  The symbology has been reported adequate for STDs and other
  13. similar diagrams.

  15.   + A DATA DICTIONARY builder, called DDBUILD, which can read the
  16. output of the graphic editor and produce the skeleton Data Dictionary. 
  17. The data dictionary is an ASCII formatted file which can be read and
  18. modified by text editors as well as the DD EVALUATOR and the DFD EVALUATOR.

  20.   + A DATA DICTIONARY EVALUATOR, called DDEVAL, which reads the
  21. completed data dictionary, parses it for errors, and produces an
  22. exception listing.

  24.   + A DATA FLOW DIAGRAM EVALUATOR, called ANAL, which reads the data
  25. flow diagram files and the data dictionary, and reports on conformance
  26. to the Structured Analysis methodology guidelines.

  28.   + A REPORT GENERATOR, called RG, which formats the output of the
  29. other tools.  It has knowledge files produced by ATK, but may be used
  30. as general-purpose formatter.

  32. Other tools are also included:

  34.   + A PostScript GENERATOR, called GEDPS, which converts DFD files into
  35. PostScript representations suitable for sending to PostScript printers
  36. or layout tools.

  38.   + A DFD REUSE HELPER, called ATTACH, which copies entire DFD subtrees
  39. for reuse on other designs.

  41.   + Other tools for printing and pretty printing.

  43. This version of ATK was originally intended for classroom use and
  44. provides an environment in which to study the Structured Analysis
  45. method. It was discovered, however, to be practical for a range of
  46. small design efforts, and is being offered as SHAREWARE at a price to
  47. suit a market neglected by comparable products.

  49. The toolkit features:
  50.   + 8 levels of decomposition below the context diagram.
  51.  
  52.   + Data dictionary evaluation limited only by available memory.
  53.  
  54.   + Flat ASCII data file formats easily accessible to other
  55. tools.
  56.  
  57.   + PostScript output from DFDs, suitable for printing or
  58. incorporation as EPS documents in publishing systems like
  59. Ventura Publisher.

  61.   + Full function on vanilla PC hardware configurations, with no
  62. mouse or expensive graphics cards required (though they are supported).

  72. The documentation is found in TUTORIAL.TXT.  Please read this document.

  74. Some technical documentation may be found in *.DOC files.  This
  75. information is auxilliary, and there is no reason for most users to be
  76. concerned with it.  You may wish to browse the first paragraph to find
  77. out what is in them, however.
  78.  
  79. ATK is SHAREWARE.  That means you may have it, distribute it, and try
  80. it for a reasonable period (90 days) without charge or obligation. 
  81. After that amount of time you must either license it or discard it. 
  82. The success and development of this, as any SHAREWARE product, depends
  83. on your support.

  85. If you find ATK saves you at least 3 hours of work in your life, please
  86. register your copy.  Your $35 goes a long way toward encouraging and
  87. allowing the authors to migrate the tools and provide improvements. 
  88. Fill out the form ORDER.DOC to register your copy.  Upon registration,
  89. you will receive a printed manual of over 60 pages describing the
  90. commands and options in more detail than the tutorial, a printed copy
  91. of the tutorial, and the latest version of the tools.

  93. ATK is, and will continue to be, fully-featured SHAREWARE with no
  94. limitations or annoying pop-up reminder screens.  Registration
  95. advantages include documentation, updates/notification, access to the
  96. enhancement list priorities, and knowledge you are advancing the product.

  98. Your letters, comments, and criticisms are welcomed.  Most of the
  99. enhancements in this version were suggested, defined, and tested by
  100. ATK users.

  102. !!!IMPORTANT INSTALLATION NOTE:  If you are installing from the ZIP or
  103. self-extracting EXE files, please be sure to include the -d option so
  104. that all directories stored in the archive are extracted properly!!!
  105. Example:  Disk with self-extracting archive is in drive A: (ATK1IBM.EXE)
  106.   1) Create and go to the desired installation directory
  107.   2) Type 'A:ATK1IBM -d' on the command line.
  108. Example:  Disk with ZIP file is in drive A: (ATK1IBM.ZIP)

  110.   2) Type 'PKUNZIP -d A:ATK1IBM' on the command line (PKZIP 1.10 or higher)
