- * OverView Version 2.21 September 21, 1988 *
- **********************************************
-
-
- If you are upgrading from an earlier OverView release (prior to
- version 2.10), be sure to read the section "UPGRADING FROM
- EARLIER RELEASES" in the OV.DOC file for information on convert-
- ing existing configuration files to the new format used by
- versions 2.10 and later. Also read the "NEW FEATURES IN THIS
- VERSION" section later in this file.
-
-
- This file contains information on the following topics:
-
- PACKING LIST - a list of the files distributed with OverView.
-
- PRINTING THE DOCUMENT - instructions on printing the documen-
- tation file.
-
- NEW FEATURES IN THIS VERSION - a detailed description of the
- changes made since version 2.10 for people upgrading from
- earlier releases.
-
-
- PACKING LIST
-
- OverView version 2.21 is distributed electronically in a single
- archive file named OV221.ARC. The archive contains the following
- files:
-
- READ.ME - This file.
- OV.CFG - Configuration file.
- OV.DOC - Documentation file.
- OV.EXE - Executable program file.
- OV.HLP - Help file.
- CVTCFG.EXE - Conversion utility for old OV.CFG files.
- REGISTER.FRM - OverView registration form.
-
- The program CVTCFG.EXE is included as an aid for people upgrading
- from earlier OverView versions.
-
- If you give OverView to others, or upload it to BBS systems,
- THANK YOU--and please remember to pass on the complete archive
- file.
-
- If you get a version of OverView directly from Magee Enterprises,
-
- the files will not be archived and can be used directly.
-
-
- PRINTING THE DOCUMENT
-
- The documentation included in the archive is a "print image"
- file that is ready for printing on 8 1/2 by 11 inch paper. It
- does not contain any special printer controls or characters and
- should print correctly on most printers. The document can be
- printed with the following DOS command:
-
- PRINT OV.DOC
-
- You can also read the document "on-line" by using the DOS TYPE
- command, OverView's built-in file viewer, or another file viewing
- program.
-
-
- NEW FEATURES IN VERSIONS 2.20 AND 2.21
-
- - The Enter key now performs a variety of additional functions:
-
- - In the directory tree display, it "logs in" to the directory
-
- under the dir pointer (like pressing 'L' for Login).
- - In the main file name display, it views the file under the
- file pointer (like Alt-V). If the file pointer is currently
- over a directory name, you are logged in to that directory
- (like F4).
- - While viewing a file, it moves down a screen (like PgDn).
- - It continues to select/invoke any highlighted menu entry.
-
- - The Directory Tree is now sorted by name. If you've used the
- [Dir | Show Dir Tree | Write] command, you'll need to do an
- initial [... | New] to get the names sorted and then [... |
- Write] to save them that way.
-
- - A "find file name" command has been implemented. The '=' key
- starts a search for a matching file name in the current window
- (not a disk search). Each character you type after '=' further
- defines the name to search for. Refer to the topic FIND FILE
- NAME in section 5 of the documentation for more information.
-
- - File name scrolling has been changed considerably. In the
- past, file names only scrolled up and down by rows. Now they
- can also scroll left and right by columns. Left/right scrol-
- ling will backup/advance one column of names at a time, while
- up/down scrolling will backup/advance one name at a time. This
- change allows a continuous range of file names (in the current
- sort order) to be displayed in a window. In the past, some
- files between the top left and bottom right screen corners
- would not have been displayed until the window was scrolled.
- In a related change, the file pointer will no longer wrap from
- first to last or last to first file names, although the
- Home/End keys still function.
-
- - File names can now be displayed in either of the following
- formats:
-
- BIOSIO.ASM DIRECT.H | BIOSIO ASM DIRECT H
- BIOSIO.OBJ DIRECT.OBJ | BIOSIO OBJ DIRECT OBJ
- BMDOC.ARC DOSFILE.H | BMDOC ARC DOSFILE H
- CHKMOUSE.ASM EMS.ASM | CHKMOUSE ASM EMS ASM
-
- Use the [Other | Setup Parameters | Other Options | Display
- Files as NAME EXT] option to select the style you prefer.
-
- - An extra level of file information can now be displayed. There
- is now a one column full info mode (as before), a two column
- info mode (new), and a five column mode (as before). You can
- cycle through the three modes using the Alt-I or [File | Extra
- File Info] command. You can select whichever mode you prefer
- as a default with the [Other | Setup Parameters | Startup
- Defaults | Extra File Info] options.
-
- - You can now select default sort options with the [Other | Setup
- Parameters | Startup Defaults | Sort Options] command.
-
- - You can now bypass the initial startup screen keypress wait by
- setting the [Other | Setup Parameters | Startup Defaults |
- Bypass Startup Screen Wait] option.
-
- - OverView now looks for its help (OV.HLP) and configuration
- (OV.CFG) files in a directory pointed to by an environment
- variable named OVFILES. Using this feature can shorten startup
- times and speed up access to help information, particularly
- when the current directory is a floppy disk. Refer to the
- topic FILE SETUP in section 3 of the documentation for more
- information.
-
- - OverView's initial display directory can now be specified on
- the command line. The command:
-
- C>OV A:
-
- will start OverView with the initial directory set to drive A:.
-
-
- - The Esc key will now exit OverView from the file name display,
- without the "Quit (y/N):" or "Exit ... Return..." prompts.
- OverView will exit to the current window's drive/directory.
- The Alt-Q and Quit commands continue to operate as before.
-
- - The menu selection bar in pull-down submenus now warps around
- from top to bottom and bottom to top in response to the up and
- down arrow keys.
-
- - The Alt-K and Alt-M menu short-cuts have been exchanged to be a
- better mnemonic aid. Alt-K is now for (K)opy-Tagged, and Alt-M
- is now Move-Tagged.
-
- - OverView now allows you specify multiple DOS commands wherever
- it previously allowed you to enter one command ([Xecute | DOS
- Command], User Defined Keys, Point-and-Go entries). The
- commands must still be entered on a single line, but are
- separated by '^' characters. For example, the following line,
- entered in response to the [Xecute | DOS Command] command would
- actually execute three commands:
-
- CD \^DIR *.SYS^COPY CONFIG.SYS PRN
-
- To actually include a '^' in a command, prefix it with a '$'.
-
-
- - Version 2.21 is now being marketed and distributed by Magee
- Enterprises of Norcross Georgia.
