- Word Processing Concepts with WordStar
-
- These exercises and assignments assume a basic familiarity with
- DOS. The student should know how to run a program, format a
- disk, copy a file, and should be familiar with the distinc-
- tion between files containing programs and the data files
- created by programs.
-
- The following files are included:
-
- I. WordStar exercise documents (*.ws)
- II. Handouts (*.HDT)
- III. Assignments (*.AST)
- IV. Documents for use in assignments (*.DOC)
-

- The exercises are WordStar documents. To use them, the student
- loads WordStar and opens the appropriate *.WS file. The text of
- the exercise directs them in editing drills.
-
- Questions are scattered throughout the text of the exercise
- files. The questions are numbered (n) and the answers are found
- in the file ANS.HDT. When I teach this material, I pass the
- answers out to the students, so they can check their work as they
- do the exercises. Alternatively, the students could be assigned
- to write the answers to the questions, giving them the answers
- afterward.
-
- To run the exercises the WordStar help level must be set at 2 and
- justification and hyphenation turned off. To save the students
- confusion, I have those set as defaults.
-
- I have the students run these exercises as homework assignments,
- after they complete the FIRST.AST (below).
-
- II. Handouts
-
- MENUS.HDT A diagram of WordStar menus (arrows and boxes must be
- drawn by hand). I pass out this diagram along with a screen
- shot of each sub-menu, and a copy of a reference card.
- Together they constitute a mini-manual, which is all the
- student needs to create and edit vanilla documents.
-
- ASCIIVS.HDT This handout makes the point that non-ascii charac-
- ters in WordStar files, making it impossible to use them
- with other programs. Later in the course, I have them
- transfer information from 123 to WordStar.
-
- ANS.HDT Answers to the questions asked in the exercises (*.WS).
-
- HOWTO.HDT Instructions for running the exercises (*.WS).
-
- REFSHEET.HDT A blank, do-it-yourself reference sheet.
-
- III. Assignemnts
-
- FIRST.AST This is the first word processing assignment. It takes
- the student through the entire cycle of creating and print-
- ing a file. I give one lecture prior to this assignment, in
- which I describe word processing and have them create and
- print a paragraph in class.
-
- EX1-3.AST This is the second word processing assignment. Stu-
- dents run it on their own outside of class, and I discuss it
- and answer questions in the following session.
-
- EX5-6.AST This is the third processing assignment. Students run
- it on their own outside of class, and I discuss it and
- answer questions in the following session.
-
- EX-4.AST This is the fourth word processing assignment. Students
- run it on their own outside of class, and I discuss it and
- answer questions in the following session.
-
- EVAL.AST This is a software evaluation assignment, illustrating a
- few quantitative measurements. I use it after the exer-
- cises.
-
- COMPARE.AST I have shown a few classes PFS Write after WordStar
- to give them some perspective. (It takes less than one
- class period). This assignment compares the two.
-
- REFSHEET.AST Assignment to fill in the blank reference sheet.
-
- IV. Documents
-
- MESS.DOC Used in EX1-3.AST.
-
- SEARCH.DOC Used in EX5-6.AST.
