  2. |  Welcome  to  the Shareware revolution.  This remarkable  method  of  |
  3. |  software  distribution was co-pioneered in 1982 by Jim  Button  and  |
  4. |  Andrew  Fluegelman.   It has become a major force in  the  software  |
  5. |  industry,   helping  to reduce software prices and  eliminate  copy  |
  6. |  protection schemes.                                                  |

  9.                     HERE'S HOW SHAREWARE WORKS:
  10.  
  11. You are encouraged to copy the PC-Type II diskettes and share them freely
  12. with others.  You have the luxury of trying out the complete programs, at
  13. your own pace and in the comfort of your own home or workplace.  This is not
  14. a crippled or "demo" copy, but the complete working version of the program.
  15.  
  16. After you have used PC-Type II for a reasonable evaluation period you must
  17. either discontinue use of the program or purchase a licensed copy from
  18. ButtonWare or from an authorized dealer.
  19.  
  20. Why pay at all?

  25.    *  Access to the on-line ButtonWare Bulletin Board

  30.    *  A sense of pride and ownership, by having honestly
  31.       participated in the Shareware revolution

  33.       distribution method which doesn't depend on expensive
  34.       advertising campaigns.

  36. So please dive in and enjoy the fun of legally sharing good software with
  37. your friends and associates. But also be aware of the following restrictions,
  38. designed to protect the community of Shareware users and to prevent others
  39. from taking unfair advantage of the trust, hard work, and good will of
  40. Shareware authors. Exceptions to these conditions must be received in writing
  41. from ButtonWare.

  43. 1. Disk vendors (those who sell Shareware disks for a profit) must follow
  44.    the procedure outlined in the "VENDOR.DOC" file.
  45. 2. You may not charge more than $3 per diskette.
  46. 3. The files and programs on the disks may not be modified or deleted.
  47. 4. The programs cannot be sold as part of some other more inclusive package.
  48. 5. The programs cannot be "rented" or "leased" to others.
  49. 6. In the case of distribution via any telecommunications link
  50.    the following must be done:
  51.        All ButtonWare programs (and documentation files) must be transferred
  52.        in a library or archive format.  This means that all the files on
  53.        each ButtonWare disk must be combined into one file - one file
  54.        for each ButtonWare disk.
  55. 7. If you're copying the disks for distribution to students in a classroom,
  56.    you must provide them with the following written notice:

  84.    must be purchased for each station that uses PC-Type II.  Please check
  85.    the volume purchase discount schedule on the order form at the back of
  86.    the manual.

  92. 1. Shareware distribution of ButtonWare programs is permitted only in the
  93.    United States, Canada, the British Isles, and Australasia (the "Shareable
  94.    Area").

  96. 2. For information on distribution of ButtonWare software in countries
  97.    outside the shareable Area please contact your local distributor. You can
  98.    obtain the name of your local distributor by phoning (INT)45 42 87 87 58.
  99.    These distributors have exclusive distribution rights in
  100.    the non-Shareable Area.

  102. 3. Jim Button, residing at Bellevue, State of Washington, U.S.A. and
  103.    ButtonWare, Inc., State of Washington, U.S.A., hold the exclusive world
  104.    rights to reproduce and distribute the following products:

  111. 4. On October 5th, 1987, we issued a statement that the aforementioned
  112.    ButtonWare products may not be copied and shared outside the Shareable
  113.    Area.

  115. 5. Furthermore, we stated that these ButtonWare products may no longer be
  116.    advertised and sold as Shareware, Freeware, Public Domain or
  117.    User-Supported Software outside the Shareable Area.
  118.  
  119. 6. Outside the Shareable Area, ButtonWare software may not be downloaded from
  120.    Public Libraries or Bulletin Boards, or copied from CD-ROM or CD-WORM
  121.    disks onto other media, including, but not limited to, diskettes, hard
  122.    disks, magnetic tapes or optical disks, for the intentional or
  123.    unintentional purposes of sales or distribution, whether or not for
  124.    financial gain. The issue of a sale or distribution whatsoever cannot be
  125.    stepped aside by the claiming that only consulting time or the costs of a
  126.    diskette or labor has been charged.

  128. 7. Furthermore, any exportation from the Shareable Area without authorization
  129.    from the author is a violation of Copyright laws.

  131. 8. Violation of the above-mentioned is grounds for legal action by
  132.    ButtonWare, Inc. for violation of Copyrights.

  134. 9. By using the aforementioned software, you agree to the statements above.

  142. The PC-Type II system files are compressed into three files on your
  143. distribution diskettes.  These files are PCT1, PCT2, and PCT3.  These files
  144. must be "uncompressed" before you can use PC-Type II.  The program
  145. INSTALL.EXE has been provided to install PC-Type II onto your hard drive.
  146.  
  147. If you ordered PC-Type II on 3 1/2" diskettes, you will receive two diskettes
  148. instead of three.  Both the program and dictionary disk files are on the
  149. 3 1/2" PROGRAM diskette.  The utility files are on the UTILITY diskette.

  151. The file INST1.BAT is on the 3 1/2" PROGRAM diskette and the file INST2.BAT
  152. is on the 3 1/2" UTILITY diskette.  These two files are only used to install
  153. PC-Type II on systems with no hard disk but two 3 1/2" disk drives.

  155. When installation is completed, you will probably want to modify some of
  156. the default configuration settings.  Do this by entering PC-Type II by
  157. typing PCT after the DOS prompt.   Then press F2 to bring up the main menu
  158. and then press C to bring up the configuration menu.

  160. Special notice should be given to the (S)witches option in this menu.  It
  161. is here that you can set the action of the Enter key, the insert shape and
  162. cursor location on entry, etc.  (See your manual for configuration settings
  163. and options.) Printer escape codes can be created or modified with the
  164. (E)scape codes option.

  166. When you press Esc to exit the Configuration menu, you will be asked if you
  167. want to update your .PRO file.  If you answer Y, enter the path and
  168. select the desired .PRO file and your profile file will be updated.

  175. If you did not purchase PC-Type II (complete with printed manual) directly
  176. from ButtonWare or from an authorized dealer, then you are considered to be
  177. evaluating the program.
  178.  
  179. We have tried to provide you with everything necessary to evaluate
  180. PC-Type II.  The program utilizes clear, informative menus.  Help screens
  181. are always available.
  182.  
  183. Due to space constraints, the User's Manual is divided into two compressed
  184. files: PCTDOC1.EXE which is included on the Dictionary Disk, and
  185. PCTDOC2.COM which is included on the Utility Disk.  Both of these are
  186. self-extracting files.  However, you need a hard disk to extract them.  To
  187. extract the files, you must first copy them to a drive and directory on
  188. your hard disk.  To do this, first change to the appropriate drive and
  189. directory, and place the Dictionary Disk in drive A, then type:
  190.  
  191. COPY A:PCTDOC1.EXE               and press Enter
  192.  
  193. Next place the Utility Disk in drive A and type:
  194.  
  195. COPY A:PCTDOC2.COM               and press Enter
  196.  
  197. To extract the files, type the file name.  For example, to extract PCTDOC1,
  198. type:
  199.  
  200. PCTDOC1                          and press Enter
  201.  
  202. Repeat this step for PCTDOC2.
  203.  
  204. A batch file called DOC.BAT is provided that prints all of the files.
  205. Before using the DOC.BAT file, you must first copy the file to the same
  206. drive and directory as the PCTDOC1.EXE and PCTDOC2.COM files.  To do this,
  207. first change to the appropriate drive and directory, and place the Program
  208. Disk in drive A, then type:
  209.  
  210. COPY A:DOC.BAT                   and press Enter
  211.  
  212. To use the DOC.BAT file, type DOC at the DOS prompt, and the files are
  213. printed to your printer.
  214.  
  215. Alternatively, you can print specific chapters by typing:
  216.  
  217. COPY filename PRN
  218.  
  219. where filename is the name of the file that you wish to print.
  220.  
  221. The User's Manual contains 29 chapters and is approximately 317 pages long.

  223. The User's Manual on disk has been mailed to all major computer clubs, user
  224. groups, ASP-approved disk dealers and bulletin board operators that
  225. ButtonWare is aware of.  You can obtain the User's Manual on disk from
  226. one of these groups.

  228. In order to keep costs down, the document disk is not included with
  229. purchased copies of the program and cannot be purchased directly from
  230. ButtonWare.  Purchased copies of PC-Type II include complete a printed copy
  231. of the User's Manual, typeset and bound.
