  2. |  Welcome  to  the Shareware revolution.  This remarkable  method  of  |
  3. |  software  distribution was co-pioneered in 1982 by Jim  Button  and  |
  4. |  Andrew  Fluegelman.   It has become a major force in  the  software  |
  5. |  industry,   helping  to reduce software prices and  eliminate  copy  |
  6. |  protection schemes.                                                  |

  9.                     HERE'S HOW SHAREWARE WORKS:
  10.  
  11. You are encouraged to copy the PC-File+ diskettes and share them freely
  12. with others.  You have the luxury of trying out the complete programs, at
  13. your own pace and in the comfort of your own home or workplace.  This is not
  14. a crippled or "demo" copy, but the complete working version of the program.
  15.  
  16. After you have used PC-File+ for a reasonable evaluation period you must
  17. either discontinue use of the program or purchase a licensed copy from
  18. ButtonWare or from an authorized dealer.
  19.  
  20. Why pay at all?

  25.    *  Access to the on-line ButtonWare Bulletin Board

  30.    *  A sense of pride and ownership, by having honestly
  31.       participated in the Shareware revolution
  32.    *  You help to keep software prices down, by supporting a
  33.       distribution method which doesn't depend on expensive
  34.       advertising campaigns.

  36. So please dive in and enjoy the fun of legally sharing good software with
  37. your friends and associates. But also be aware of the following restrictions,
  38. designed to protect the community of Shareware users and to prevent others
  39. from taking unfair advantage of the trust, hard work, and good will of
  40. Shareware authors. Exceptions to these conditions must be received in writing
  41. from ButtonWare.

  43. 1. Disk vendors (those who sell Shareware disks for a profit) must follow
  44.    the procedure outlined in the "VENDOR.DOC" file.
  45. 2. You may not charge more than $3 per diskette.
  46. 3. The files and programs on the disks may not be modified or deleted.
  47. 4. The programs cannot be sold as part of some other more inclusive package.
  48. 5. The programs cannot be "rented" or "leased" to others.
  49. 6. In the case of distribution via any telecommunications link
  50.    the following must be done:
  51.        All ButtonWare programs (and documentation files) must be transferred
  52.        in a library or archive format.  This means that all the files on
  53.        each ButtonWare disk must be combined into one file - one file
  54.        for each ButtonWare disk.
  55. 7. If you're copying the disks for distribution to students in a classroom,
  56.    you must provide them with the following written notice:

  84.    must be purchased for each station that uses PC-File+.  Please check
  85.    the volume purchase discount schedule on the order form at the back of
  86.    the manual.

  92. 1. Shareware distribution of ButtonWare programs is permitted only in the
  93.    United States, Canada, the British Isles, and Australasia (the "Shareable
  94.    Area").

  96. 2. For information on distribution of ButtonWare software in countries
  97.    outside the shareable Area please contact your local distributor. You can
  98.    obtain the name of your local distributor by phoning (INT)45 42 87 87 58.
  99.    These distributors have exclusive distribution rights in
  100.    the non-Shareable Area.

  102. 3. Jim Button, residing at Bellevue, State of Washington, U.S.A. and
  103.    ButtonWare, Inc., State of Washington, U.S.A., hold the exclusive world
  104.    rights to reproduce and distribute the following products:

  111. 4. On October 5th, 1987, we issued a statement that the aforementioned
  112.    ButtonWare products may not be copied and shared outside the Shareable
  113.    Area.

  115. 5. Furthermore, we stated that these ButtonWare products may no longer be
  116.    advertised and sold as Shareware, Freeware, Public Domain or
  117.    User-Supported Software outside the Shareable Area.
  118.  
  119. 6. Outside the Shareable Area, ButtonWare software may not be downloaded from
  120.    Public Libraries or Bulletin Boards, or copied from CD-ROM or CD-WORM
  121.    disks onto other media, including, but not limited to, diskettes, hard
  122.    disks, magnetic tapes or optical disks, for the intentional or
  123.    unintentional purposes of sales or distribution, whether or not for
  124.    financial gain. The issue of a sale or distribution whatsoever cannot be
  125.    stepped aside by the claiming that only consulting time or the costs of a
  126.    diskette or labor has been charged.

  128. 7. Furthermore, any exportation from the Shareable Area without authorization
  129.    from the author is a violation of Copyright laws.

  131. 8. Violation of the above-mentioned is grounds for legal action by
  132.    ButtonWare, Inc. for violation of Copyrights.

  142. PC-File:dB is ButtonWare's most powerful database product.  It is
  143. similar to PC-File+ in appearance, but uses dBASE III compatible
  144. files.  It allows up to one billion records per database, supports
  145. record locking on networks, and provides for multiple indexes.
  146. PC-File:dB requires 416k available RAM memory, and either a hard disk,
  147. or two 720k floppy drives.

  149. PC-File+ is intended for use on computers which do not meet the
  150. requirements to run PC-File:dB.  PC-File+ only requires two 360k
  151. floppy disk drives and 384k available RAM memory.  If your system has
  152. the capacity to run PC-File:dB, we recommend using it, instead of
  153. PC-File+.

  155. Any databases, letters and report formats you create with PC-File+
  156. can later be transferred to PC-File:dB.

  163. PC-File+ does not use an "install" program.  Simply make a directory,
  164. and copy all the PC-File+ files into this directory.  The manual
  165. describes the installation process in detail.

  172. Make working copies of each of the disks, using either the DOS COPY
  173. or DISKCOPY command.  The manual describes the installation process
  174. in detail.

  181. From a DOS prompt, give the command: PCF

  183. If you are working from a hard disk, be sure that PCF.EXE is either
  184. in the current directory, or in a directory listed in the DOS PATH.
  185. If you are using floppy disks, be sure the working copy of Disk One
  186. is in the current drive, and that you have a formatted data disk in
  187. another drive.

  194. If you did not purchase PC-File+ (complete with printed manual) directly
  195. from ButtonWare or from an authorized dealer, then you are considered to be
  196. evaluating the program.
  197.  
  198. We have tried to provide you with everything necessary to evaluate
  199. PC-File+. The program utilizes clear, informative menus. Help screens are
  200. always available.  Also, the file "CARD" can be printed to create a quick
  201. reference card with a summary of the program commands.
  202.  
  203. This is sufficient for most people to do a good evaluation of the program.
  204. However, some people prefer to have a complete copy of the printed manual.
  205.  
  206. A complete copy of the printed "User's Manual" for PC-File+ is available
  207. on floppy disk to help you with your evaluation of the program. It's about
  208. 170 pages long so you'll need a lot of time, patience, and paper to print
  209. it out.

  211. In order to keep costs down, the document disk is not included with purchased
  212. copies of the program and cannot be purchased directly from ButtonWare.
  213. Purchased copies of PC-File+ include a printed copy of the User's Manual,
  214. typeset and bound.

  216. To print the PC-File+ User's Manual on disk, place the PC-File+
  217. Disk Three in drive A and type:

  223. To start printing at a page number other than page 1, or to use a left
  224. margin, place the documentation disk in drive A and type:

  229. Replace "margin with the number of spaces to include at the left of
  230. the document.

  245. 1. PC-File+ fits on two 3 1/2" disks.  Disk One contains all the files
  246.    normally found on both disks One and Three.  Disk Two is as described
  247.    in the manual.

  257.                   PC-File+ data files, and how to access databases
