  25.      Overview:  MTR (version Nisan 5759)  Copyright 1999 by Mechon Mamre,
  26.      12 Hayyim Vital St., Jerusalem, Israel (972-02-652-1906):  Includes
  27.      Mishneh Torah, Tanach, Targum, Mishnah, Tosefta, Yerushalmi, and
  28.      Bavli.  MTR is copyrighted freeware:  You need not pay or register to
  29.      use MTR, but you are most earnestly asked to report any problems you
  30.      may have with the program and any errors that you may find in our
  31.      texts or documentation.  We encourage you to share the program with
  32.      others, and to upload its ZIP files and MTREINFO.TXT to BBSs.
  33.  
  34.      Updates:  New versions are released twice yearly (before Passover and
  35.      before the Jewish New Year).
  36.  
  37.      Size of package:  The ZIP files (about 10M) expand to about 28M.
  38.  
  39.      Intended audience:  MTR should be of interest to readers of Hebrew who
  40.      study Jewish texts, and Bible scholars who wish to study the original
  41.      Hebrew text of the Bible.
  42.  
  43.      Contents:  The Bible (Tanach) in two versions--the text of the Kether
  44.      Aram Tsovah manuscript, and the same text in modern, easy-to-read,
  45.      full-style spelling; Jewish rabinical classics--the Rambam's Code
  46.      (Mishneh Torah) reproduced from the Yemenite manuscripts, the Mishnah
  47.      reproduced from the manuscript attributed to the Rambam, and Tosefta,
  48.      Jerusalem Talmud, and Babylonian Talmud reproduced from popular
  49.      printed editions.  Additional works are in preparation and will be
  50.      added in future MTR updates.

  52.      Despite the modest scope of the texts compared with larger Torah
  53.      packages on CD-ROM, users of such packages will still benefit from
  54.      MTR due to the high quality of MTR's texts.
  55.  
  56.      Software:  In addition to the Torah texts, MTR includes software for
  57.      browsing and searching the texts, and Hebrew-English EGA/VGA
  58.      screen-fonts for DOS.  The software is DOS-based but can be run from
  59.      Windows, and is Windows-aware.
  60.  
  61.      Language:  All texts are in Hebrew only.  They are stored in
  62.      unencrypted plain-text files (in IBM-standard, ASCII-Hebrew for DOS).
  63.      Text layout within the files is in logical (left-to-right) ordering.
  64.      The bundled software comes in two versions providing either an English
  65.      or a Hebrew interface (menus, messages, and help screens).
  66.  
  67.      Program versions:  There are two versions of the main MTR program:  a
  68.      TSR (memory-resident) version, and a "stand-alone" (i.e. non-resident)
  69.      version (which is transient-loading, the norm for ordinary DOS and
  70.      Windows programs).  Their differences are listed below.  In addition,
  71.      the stand-alone version is available in either Hebrew or English
  72.      language-versions.  Both language versions work identically; they
  73.      differ only in the language of the user interface (menus, messages,
  74.      and help).  Both include extensive on-line help.  The TSR version is
  75.      available only with a Hebrew interface in the present release, but
  76.      an English interface might be available with the next release.
  77.  
  78.      Manuals:  The package also includes printable manuals in both English
  79.      and Hebrew.  The 40 page English manual contains no Hebrew and will
  80.      print on any printer.  The 20 page Hebrew manual can be printed on a
  81.      printer equipped with a Hebrew font.  (See below for printing
  82.      instructions.)

  84.      Features:  The normal display mode of the stand-alone MTR program is a
  85.      text-mode screen of 25 lines.  It can also display text-mode screens of
  86.      up to 60 lines of text on VGA monitors or better.  It is Windows aware;
  87.      it can send blocks of text to the Clipboard for pasting to other
  88.      Windows applications (with options for Word-style or Dagesh-style
  89.      handling of parentheses).  Hebrew Windows is not required.  All you
  90.      need is a Hebrew word processor such as Dagesh or Qtext, which have
  91.      Hebrew support built in and will work under any version of Windows.
  92.  
  93.      The TSR version can operate either in full-screen mode of 25 text
  94.      lines, or, on VGA monitors, in a split-screen mode of 50 text lines.
  95.      In full-screen mode, the user can switch back and forth between the
  96.      TSR and a text-mode, DOS word-processor, running concurrently, both
  97.      programs occupying the entire screen.  In split-screen mode, both
  98.      programs are visible at once, each occupying half the screen.
  99.      The TSR can send blocks of text to DOS word processors.
  100.  
  101.      The search engine can search for a multi-word string of up to 75
  102.      characters, supports boolean expressions (a AND b, a OR b, a NOT b)
  103.      in any combination, and lets you allow or disallow prefixes, suffixes,
  104.      or both.
  105.  
  106.      New in this release:
  107.      - Thousands of refinements and corrections in texts, particularly in
  108.        Mishneh Torah and Onqelos.
  109.      - Refinements to the punctuation of the Bible.
  110.      - MTRFONTS will now run properly with VGA cards with a rare BIOS
  111.        programming error that would crash the system when MTR was run.
  112.  
  113.      Hardware and Operating-system requirements:
  114.      - VGA or EGA video-card (or MONO or CGA card with a Hebrew-font ROM).
  115.      - 28MB free on the destination disk (more is required on large-
  116.        capacity disks and on compressed disks).
  117.      - DOS 3.3 or later.  This version is Win9x compatible.  MTR runs in
  118.        a full DOS screen under NT and OS/2, but cannot send texts to the
  119.        clipboard under those systems.  MTR also runs under Linux's DOSEMU;
  120.        if you have difficulties setting up the Hebrew fonts under Linux,
  121.        you can write us for help (we will refer you to one of our Linux
  122.        users, for we still just run DOS ourselves).

  124.      Installation:
  125.  
  126.      - Old versions of MTR must be completely deleted before installing a
  127.        newer version.  Versions prior to Adar A' 5757 must be deleted by
  128.        MTREDEL.  (Download it from one of the internet sites carrying MTR.)
  129.        Versions dated 5757 onwards can be deleted by typing:  DELTREE \MTR
  130.        (in DOS 6 or later).
  131.  
  132.      - MTR may be installed on any local or network drive from C: to Z:
  133.        It need not be installed in a first-level directory (directly below
  134.        the root), but it is recommended to install to c:\ for best
  135.        performance and ease of setup.
  136.  
  137.      - To install MTRE, download the eight .ZIP files MTRE001 - MTRE008 and
  138.        unzip with the -d option, as shown below.
  139.  
  140.        NOTE:  The .ZIP files MUST be unzipped strictly in numerical order,
  141.        or MTR may not work properly (if at all)!
  142.  
  143.        To install MTR in x:\MTR (where x is any drive), use:
  144.  
  145.        PKUNZIP  -d  [path\]MTRE00?.ZIP  x:\
  146.  
  147.      - [path\] is the directory containing the .ZIP files.
  148.      - If the .ZIP files have been written to that directory in numerical
  149.        order, the ? may be used as is, otherwise you must run this command
  150.        for each .ZIP file individually, replacing the ? with 1, 2, 3, etc.
  151.      - x is the drive letter of the disk you are installing to.
  152.        If you are currently in the directory  x:\  this may be omitted.
  153.      - Note:  some UNZIPs do not properly interpret the x:\ at the end
  154.        of this command; so if your UNZIP is not from PK, change to the
  155.        target drive and directory (type x: then cd \) before unzipping
  156.        with the -d option.  If you do not, you may get an error message,
  157.        or MTR may be installed in an unintended location.
  158.  
  159.      WinZip installs MTR just fine, but we recommend you "extract to"
  160.      c:\  for best performance and ease of setup.

  162.      MTR Files and directories:

  164.      The installation writes the following files in the directory \MTR (or
  165.      in an MTR subdirectory below whatever directory you extracted to).

  193.         Batch files:
  194.      M.BAT         Loads Hebrew font and runs MTR.
  195.      MP.BAT        Ditto (installs font suitable for laptop LCD screens).
  196.      M2.BAT        Loads MTR + MTRTSR for study of dual texts concurrently.
  197.      M2P.BAT       Ditto (installs font suitable for laptop LCD screens).
  198.      MW.BAT        Loads MTRTSR and runs WP.BAT to load your DOS word
  199.                      processor for concurrent usage.  (You supply WP.BAT)
  200.      MWP.BAT       Ditto (installs font suitable for laptop LCD screens).

  202.      Warning:  MTRE.COM may be deleted or renamed, but the other .COM
  203.      files must not be deleted or altered in any way or MTR will stop
  204.      functioning.  The other files can be deleted to save disk space, but
  205.      MTR will regenerate .DAT and .HST files, if necessary (provided you
  206.      have write access to the disk).
  207.  
  208.      The six .BAT files are provided as example files.  They assume MTR
  209.      resides in C:\MTR.  If MTR is installed on another drive or in another
  210.      directory, they will need to be modified to use the correct pathname.
  211.  
  212.      Run MTR, MTRE, MTRTSR, and MTRFONTS with the /? option, to see a list
  213.      of command-line options available for each program.  You may may wish
  214.      to incorporate some of these options in the batch files.
  215.  
  216.      The following subdirectories under MTR\ contain the Hebrew text files
  217.      of the works included in this version.  (Sizes shown are approximate.)

  228.      Do not delete or alter these files in any way or MTR will stop
  229.      functioning for the book changed and onward.
  230.  
  231.      If you need to free up disk space, you may delete entire directories
  232.      and their contents (e.g. deleting all the BVL files will save over
  233.      10Mb), but if you do this, you should do so from the bottom up,
  234.      according to the order in which they are listed here.  This is because
  235.      MTR requires the presence of all earlier listed components in order to
  236.      make use of any component appearing subsequently in this list.  Thus,
  237.      the absence of the MSH files will cause the Tosefta, Yerushalmi and
  238.      Bavli to become unusable even if their files are intact.  Similarly,
  239.      erasing the TNK files will disable use of all but Mishneh Torah.
  240.  
  241.      Partial Installation:  If you have limited disk space, or just want to
  242.      check out the program, you can install just part of MTR.  Minimum
  243.      installation requires the first two files listed below.  You can then
  244.      progressively add other components as you wish, provided you add them
  245.      in the order listed here.

  254.      To uninstall, download and run MTREDEL, or, if you have DOS 6 or
  255.      later, type:  DELTREE \MTR.

  257.      Printing the Manuals:
  258.  
  259.      The files containing the manuals include page breaks and may be
  260.      printed directly from DOS using the PRINT or COPY commands.  e.g.
  261.

  263.         COPY  \MTR\HADPES.OTI  PRN
  264.  
  265.      The number of lines-per-page has been limited to 58 to accommodate
  266.      those printers that can only print 58 to 60 lines per page on 11 inch
  267.      paper and cannot print on the first and last half inch of the sheet.

  269.      If you use continuous paper on a dot matrix printer which prints along
  270.      the entire length of the paper, roll the first sheet up about half an
  271.      inch before printing to have the pages vertically centered on the
  272.      paper.

  274.      If your printer prints only from Windows, select a monospace font
  275.      (e.g. Courier New), not a proportional font, when loading the file
  276.      into your Windows word processor for printing.
  277.  
  278.      Installation disks:  You may prefer to receive our set of installation
  279.      disks, which includes an easy to use, bilingual installation program,
  280.      rather than downloading the ZIP files from the internet.  To order,
  281.      send 45 NIS or $20 US to our address given above.  This price includes
  282.      shipping world wide.  The installation files are supplied on 3.5" high
  283.      density (1.4Mb) disks only.  MTR on CDROM may be available soon; write
