  6.      This file describes the .zip files that comprise OEmacs Release
  7. 4.1, and the minimal set of .zip files required for use with plain
  8. MSDOS, Windows, or DESQview/X.  Oemacs Release 4.1 is a version of GNU
  9. Emacs V19.19 that works under plain MSDOS, Windows, or DESQview/X.

  11.      Note that all of the .zip files were created using the new pkzip
  12. 2.0 format.  As a result, you cannot use old versions of pkunzip or
  13. unzip to extract the files in these archives.  You must use an unzip
  14. program that understands the new pkzip 2.0 format.

  16.      The complete OEmacs Release 4.1 distribution consists of the
  17. following files (a description of each is given below):

  33.      elisp201.zip
  34.     V19 Emacs-lisp programmer's manual.  Basically, the same thing
  35.     as the .tar.gz version, but with .dvi, .aux, etc. files deleted
  36.     (the .tex files are still present, however).
  37.     ***** IMPORTANT NOTE: Previous versions of this file contained a
  38.     version-specific pathname.  This is no longer true.  As a
  39.     result, you must explicitly set the value of
  40.     `Info-directory-list" to contain the name of the directory with
  41.     these info files.
  42.      go32oe2.zip
  43.     Sources & executables for the special GO32 needed for OEmacs.
  44.     Note that each of the DJGCC, WATCOM, & DV/X binary distributions
  45.     comes with a GO32 binary; this .zip file is needed only by those
  46.     who want sources to GO32, or by those who want a debug32.exe
  47.     that works with OEmacs.

  51.     All .el and .elc files.
  52.      oe41gbin.zip
  53.     DJGPP-compiled binaries.
  54.      oe41info.zip
  55.     On-line documentation.  This basically contains all of the files
  56.     in the "emacs-19.19/info" directory.
  57.      oe41min.zip
  58.     This contains a "MINIMUM" set of files for OEmacs, not including
  59.     binaries.  This .zip file contains files that are duplicated in
  60.     other .zip files.  In addition to this file, a minimum
  61.     installation requires a .zip file containing binaries.  This
  62.     file contains only a minimum set of files; if you want full
  63.     functionality for emacs, you also need to obtain the following
  64.     files:

  71.     Note that oe41min.zip contains duplicate files (files that are
  72.     in other .zip archives).  This is normal, and any "duplicate"
  73.     files should be identical.

  77.     This .zip file contains the files in "emacs-19.19/src",
  78.     "emacs-19.19/etc", "emacs-19.19/man", etc..  It basically
  79.     contains everything but .el and .elc files, and those files in
  80.     "emacs-19.19/info".

  82.     WATCOM C/386-compiled binaries (etags.exe was compiled using
  83.     DJGPP, however).

  85.     DV/X binaries.

  88.      OEmacs Release 4.1 contains different versions of the "Emacs" binary:

  90. * An MSDOS binary compiled using DJGPP:
  91.     Advantage:    Starts up very fast.
  92.     Advantage:    Runs under plain MSDOS or within a Windows DOS
  93.             box.
  94.     Disadvantage:    Requires a numeric coprocessor to run within
  95.             Windows.
  96.     Disadvantage:    Shelling to DOS takes a long time.
  97.     Disadvantage:    Needs more memory to run under Windows.

  99.     Minimally required files:
  100.         oe41gbin.zip
  101.         oe41min.zip
  102.  
  103.     You need at least 3MB of free disk space to install this
  104.     version.  The exact amount depends on the cluster size used on
  105.     your hard disk.

  110. * A binary compiled using WATCOM C/386 9.01E:
  111.     Advantage:    Does not require a numeric coprocessor to run
  112.             within Windows.
  113.     Advantage:    Shelling to DOS is fast.
  114.     Advantage:    Runs under plain MSDOS or within a Windows DOS
  115.             box.
  116.     Disadvantage:    Takes a while to start up (about 20 seconds on a
  117.             33MHz 486DX).
  118.     Disadvantage:    Uses much more disk space than the other
  119.             versions (14MB vs 3MB).

  121.     Minimally required files:
  122.         oe41wbin.zip
  123.         oe41min.zip
  124.         oe41el1.zip
  125.         oe41el2.zip
  126.         oe41el3.zip

  128.     You need at least 14MB of free disk space to install this
  129.     version.  The exact amount depends on the cluster size used on
  130.     your hard disk.

  134. * A DESQview/X binary compiled using DJGPP:
  135.     Advantage:    Starts up very fast.
  136.     Advantage:    Can display multiple X-windows (frames).
  137.     Disadvantage:    Does not work under plain MSDOS or Windows.

  144.     version.  The exact amount depends on the cluster size used on

  150.      If you want to recompile OEmacs, you will need all of the
  151. non-binary .zip files, with the exception of "elisp201.zip" (which you
  152. do not need if you want to recompile OEmacs).
