  1. INSTALLATION AND IMAGE DISPLAY:  TRAINS 3

  3. 1) INSTALLATION
  4.  
  5.    a) Make certain you are in Windows. The installation program
  6.         will not run in DOS.
  7.  
  8.    b) Put Disk 1 (or the shareware disk) into your floppy drive.
  9.         From you File Menu choose the Run option.Type a:\setup.exe 
  10.         or b:\setup.exe, depending upon whether a or b is the letter
  11.         assigned to your 3 1/2" diskette drive. Click on OK.
  12.  
  13.    c) Alternatively, open the directory and file display for
  14.         your floppy drive and double click on setup.exe.  
  15.    
  16. 2) IMAGE QUALITY: SUPER IMPORTANT!! DON'T SKIP THIS!!
  17.  
  18.     a) The graphics files in this product are superb 24 bit, 16
  19.         million color images sized to 510 x 383 or less pixels/inch.  
  20.         This nonstandard size is a limit of the developer environment 
  21.         we author within and will no longer be a constraint as of 1996. 
  22.  
  23.    b) Unfortunately, 24 bit color images show degredation when 
  24.        displayed at 256 color. To view these images with all the 
  25.        brilliance and resolution they contain, change your monitor 
  26.        resolution so as to display 16 million colors at 640 x 480 
  27.        pixels. If you installed these images as a screen saver, 
  28.        they will look best at 640 x480 because the image then 
  29.        occupies most of the screen area. 
  30.  
  31.    c) Unless you have an old pre-1990 monitor, you already have 
  32.         installed software to change the resolution of monitor. Such 
  33.         software comes with all graphics cards and is preinstalled 
  34.         when you buy a computer in the retail market. I cannot give 
  35.         specifics here for the dozens of different graphics cards on 
  36.         the market. If you haven't discovered this monitor utility, which 
  37.         will be a Windows applet, consult the manual that came with 
  38.         your graphics card. If you lost it, call the store where you 
  39.         bought the computer or the manufacturer of the computer.
  40.  
  41. 3) SCREEN SAVER   
  42.  
  43.        Either accept the default path and directory for installation or 
  44.        edit to your own specifications. Choose whether or not to install  
  45.        TRAINS 3 as one of your screen saver options  in the 
  46.        Desktop Item of the Control Panel. Notice that the word 
  47.        'default' in the dialog is confusing. There is no 'default' screen 
  48.        saver in the Desktop Item. If you choose this option, TRAINS 3 
  49.        will be installed as just one of your screen saver choices 
  50.        under the name MINICAT in the proper alphabetical position. 
  51.        However, it will automatically become the active screen saver. 
  52.        See below for an explanation of 'MINICAT'. See the text file 
  53.        'Your Windows Screen Saver' in the album for detailed 
  54.        information about TRAINS 3 as a screen saver and 
  55.        how to configure it.

  57. 4) The installation will create a program group called MINICAT
  58.        with a single item in it also called MINICAT. You may change
  59.        the title of this icon to TRAINS 3 if you wish but 
  60.        there are reasons not to do so as explained below.

  62. 5) Double Click upon the MINICAT icon and the opening screen of
  63.        MINICAT is displayed. Notice the bar on the upper right which
  64.        is labeled either TRAINS 3 SHAREWARE or TRAINS 3 
  65.        REGISTERED. Double click on this bar and you will be 
  66.        presented with the TRAINS 3 album main screen. If you 
  67.        pause at the opening screen for several seconds, a slide 
  68.        show of all images in the album will begin in the left window. 
  69.        Notice that you can only exit the program from this opening 
  70.        screen using the Close Button.

  72. 6) Registered users should realize that: 
  73.  
  74.     a) if you did not UNINSTALL the shareware version of  
  75.         TRAINS 3 (see manual) and also,
  76.  
  77.     b) installed the registered version into the same directory as the
  78.         shareware version (which happens automatically if you accept
  79.         the default installation path), 
  80.  
  81.     c) THEN BOTH versions now reside within your MINICAT. If you 
  82.         click the Open button at the bottom of the main screen, you will 
  83.         see a list of installed CATALOGS:  TRAINS 3 SHAREWARE 
  84.         and TRAINS 3 REGISTERED.

  86.         If you wish to delete the shareware version, you MUST use the 
  87.         uninstall procedure outlined in the manual. If you simply delete 
  88.         the directory and files, it is very likely your MINICAT viewer 
  89.         will not function and you will have no access to the program 
  90.         album.
