  15. If you have been looking at sales and inventory software you have probably
  16. voiced some of the following concerns:

  61.                              SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

  63. > Any MS-DOS microcomputer.

  65. > A hard disk drive with at least 2MB of free space.

  67. > 640 KB of memory.

  69. > A printer capable of compressed print (15 cpi), or a wide carriage printer
  70.   (132 columns). For printing bar code labels you will need an HP LaserJet or
  71.   work-alike printer.

  77.                      QUICKSTART INSTALLATION OF RETAIL PLUS
  78.

  80. Retail Plus version 5.1 is supplied as an archive file called "PLUS51.ZIP".
  81. It contains all the files you need. Follow these steps to get a functioning
  82. system onto your hard drive:
  83.  
  84. 1 - At the "C:>" prompt create a new directory on your hard drive and go to
  85. that directory:
  86.                      MD RETAIL              <press enter>
  87.                      CD\RETAIL              <press enter>
  88.  
  89. 2 - Using an archive un-packing utility such as UNZIP.EXE, unpack the contents
  90. of PLUS51.ZIP into the new directory:
  91.  
  92.                      UNZIP A:PLUS51         <press enter>
  93.  
  94. 3 - Now check for a file called "CONFIG.SYS" in the root directory of the
  95. startup drive. If it is there it should contain the following statements with
  96. the at least minimum values shown (they can be greater but not smaller):
  97.  
  98.                      FILES = 30
  99.                      BUFFERS = 10
  100.  
  101. You can check the contents of CONFIG.SYS just by typing:
  102.  
  103.                      TYPE CONFIG.SYS        <press enter>
  104.  
  105. If the files & buffers statements are absent you can use any text editor to
  106. insert them.
  107.  
  108.                             STARTING RETAIL PLUS
  109.  
  110. To start Retail Plus go to the directory where it is found and enter R51
  111. at the DOS prompt:
  112.                      CD\RETAIL              <press enter>
  113.                      R51                    <press enter>
  114.  
  115. Explanation: The installation process creates a file called R51.BAT that
  116. contains the following two lines:
  117.                                   SET CLIPPER=F:30
  118.                                   RETAIL51
  119.  
  120. Retail Plus should always be started up with this batch file, otherwise your
  121. system may not allow it to open enough files. If at some point in the program
  122. you press F1 for help, and instead of a help screen you get a DOS Error 4 (too
  123. many files open), then you know that you cannot open enough files. If this
  124. happens try typing SET at the DOS prompt. You should then see CLIPPER=F:30 on
  125. the screen along with the other DOS environment setups. If it is not there then
  126. the program was not started up using R51.BAT. If the file R51.BAT is missing
  127. you can create it with any text editor such as the DOS Edit command.

  129. Retail Plus is initially configured to start without requiring a password. If
  130. it does prompt you for a password just type "TEST" and press ENTER. You can
  131. remove this password later and set up new ones if you need security. If this
  132. password does not give you access then someone has already set up the system
  133. for security.
