"Thine Enemies Shall Be Found Liars Unto Thee"^15
The peace process has moved quickly to bring both Jerusalem and the
Temple Mount into prominence. There are hints in the Scriptures that
it is at the hands of zealous Jews that the Islamic shrines on Temple
Mount are destroyed. In the conclusion of the prophecy of the seventy
weeks in Daniel 9, the prophet makes reference to the end of this
abomination: and on the temple shall be the abomination of
desolations; and at the end of the time an end shall be put to the
desolation. (Daniel 9:27, Septuagint) While the prophet does not
explain how this end will come, he does indicate that its end marks
the termination of the divine time periods. For this reason, our
expectation is that the ruination of the Islamic shrines on Temple
Mount will be coincident with the return of Christ if it does not
occur beforehand.
Where do the Scriptures provide clues about the means by which the
destruction of the abomination will occur? In the prophecy of
Ezekiel, there is a reference to conflict over the possession of
Jerusalem: Son of man, thy brethren, even thy brethren, the men of thy
kindred, and all the house of Israel wholly, are they unto whom the
inhabitants of Jerusalem (i.e. the non-Jewish residents of Jerusalem
who have historically been predominantly Arab) have said, Get you far
from the LORD: unto us is this land given in possession. (Ezekiel
11:15) These are the very words of the present Palestinian
inhabitants of Jerusalem who disavow Israeli claims to the city on
religious grounds. Note a response of the Most High to this taunt:
Therefore say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; I will even gather you from
the people, and assemble you out of the countries where ye have been
scattered, and I will give you the land of Israel. And they shall
come thither; and they shall take away all the detestable things
thereof and all the abominations thereof from thence. (Ezekiel
11:17,18) The prophet indicates that, in response to the taunts from
the non-Jewish inhabitants of Jerusalem to the house of Israel, the
cleansing of the abominations is accomplished by the dispersed Jews
who return to the land.
Further information on this end to the abomination is provided in the
last blessing of Moses: The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath
are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from
before thee; and shall say, Destroy them. (Note that it is not peace
but expulsion and destruction that settles the matter). Israel then
shall dwell in safety alone: (Note that Israel does not dwell in
safety until after this expulsion and destruction upon Israel's
enemies have been visited) the fountain of Jacob shall be upon a land
of corn and wine; also his heavens shall drop down dew. Happy art
thou, O Israel: who is like unto thee, O people saved by the LORD,
the shield of thy help, and who is the sword of thy excellency! and
thine enemies shall be found liars unto thee; (Will this be because it
becomes obvious that the peace process is shown to be nothing more
than a part of a plan to destroy Israel?) and thou shalt tread upon
their high places (Deuteronomy 33:27-29). If the high places are a
reference to the Islamic shrines on Temple Mount, does this prophecy
not further strengthen the expectation that it is Israel which treads
them down?
This is not a time for complacency or apathy concerning our
expectation of the return of Christ. In a single act of sabotage, the
Islamic shrines may be laid in ruins. This kind of destruction. The
prophecy of Daniel seems to indicate, will mark "the end of the time"
- the end of the time when Jerusalem is trodden down of the Gentiles;
the end of the time that must elapse until the sanctuary is cleansed.
Thus, it is likely that the "sudden destruction" of which the apostle
Paul spoke is the ruination of the Islamic shrines on Temple Mount.
It occurs while the nations of the earth are talking peace and safety
for the Middle East. Our counsel to all who look for redemption in
Zion is to watch closely the escalating conflict over Temple Mount and
the tensions it produces, not only between Israel and the Arabs, but
within Israeli society itself. And now have many nations gathered
against thee, saying, We will rejoice, and our eyes shall look upon
Zion. But they know not the thought of the Lord, and have not
understood his counsel: for he has gathered them as sheaves of the
floor. (Micah 4:11,12) This latter testimony indicates that the
Almighty is drawing all nations into Jerusalem and its interests for
the purposes of judgment. Even from the selection of recent news
clipping we have cited, the verity of this prophecy is amply
confirmed. Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, the Palestinians, the
Vatican, the Russians - to name a few of the key players - have all
signaled their intention within the past three months to enter the
fray in determining the final status of Jerusalem and its holy sites.
Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the
Son of man cometh (Matthew 24:44).
