This tutorial shows how to configure your printer, define the page layout of your document, print your document and to enhance the looks of your printout by using commands.
Before print a document from your printer, you must make sure the following:
(1) your document is typed up, laid out well; and
(2) your printer is properly interfaced.
With NJStar Professional, you can preview your document to check the appearance of your document before printing it on paper.
If you have not configured NJStar for your printer, or changed the hardware (e.g., upgraded the printer) since your last configuration, you must configure your printer. This involves the following:
(1) check if the correct printer driver is selected from NJStar
(2) check if the correct printer port is selected from NJStar
(3) set the desired printer resolution
These are the essential points to check. We will do this now.
íⁿ Configuring your printer
Printer configuration is under print file option. First, you will go to the print routine:
>>í┌Output, Print fileí█ ó¿ <Ctrl P>
>> Press <ESC> to come back to your document.
You have briefly looked at NJStar's new print program interface, NJPRINT.
As you cannot see the tutorial instructions once you launch NJPRINT, please come back to the tutorial by pressing <ESC>, read the instructions, then go back to NJPRINT by pressing <Ctrl P> to continue the exercise:
>> Press <Ctrl P> to call NJPRINT again.
>> Use <ó¡> to highlight PRINTER SETUP button
>> Press <ENTER> to go to printer configuration option
Here you find all the essential printer configuration options. As this is a friendly button interface, you may use Mouse for quicker action.
If Mouse is not available, you can use keyboard:
<ENTER> to flip between available options;
<ó¡> or <ó¼> to move to the next / previous option;
<SPACE> to select one of the radio buttons
>> Try to configure NJStar to your own printer
Once you set this, you don't have to re-configure your printer again, as NJStar stores this information on disk.
íⁿ Defining your page
Having set your printer, it is time to define the appearance (layout) of your document. Here we need to consider at least the following:
(1) paper size
(2) default font and size
(3) paper orientation
(4) margins and headers
These options are found in NJPRINT's "Page Setup" and "Default Font" sections.
Try to work out the following settings, and see the effect of each setting with NJPRINT's Preview facility:
______________________________
ó▒ Quick test on Page Format
í▒í▒í▒í▒í▒í▒í▒í▒í▒í▒í▒í▒í▒í▒í▒
a) A4 paper, Default font size = 16 (128 x 128 dots)
b) Legal, Landscape, Default font size = 3 (24 x 24 dots)
c) A5 paper, Portrait, Default font size = 6 (48 x 48 dots), Margins = 0
d) Select "Default" in both "Page Setup" and "Default Font" sections
When you think you have set the page layout of your document to your satisfaction, you may want to print your document straight away. But before printing your document, it is wise to preview your document to check it. If necessary, zoom in to examine the details.
From "Print" option in NJPRINT, you will see further options, as to specify the range of printout as well as how many copies you require.
Let's practice a little:
>> Preview page 2 of this file
>> Zoom in to examine
>> Use "Right", "Left", "Up", "Down" buttons to navigate the screen
You have so far learned the most basic print routines. In the following section, you are going to learn how to enhance the appearance of your document by giving instruction directly in your document, such as centring the paragraph, changing font size, and using headers and footers.
NJStar's commands we are learning will override the setting you might have set from the PRINT option. They all begin with backslash character "ú▄". NJStar's printing program interprets this symbol as a command, and you and if you want to print this symbol, you have to type one extra backslash "\\".
>> Preview this page to see the effect of the following lines:
(1) C:\NJSTAR\J3.TUT (single backslash)
(2) C:\\NJSTAR\\J3.TUT (double backslash)
Did you see that the two lines above are actually displayed as follows?
(1) C:(single backslash)
(2) C:ú▄NJSTARú▄J3.TUT (double backslash)
This tells you that the single backslash acts as a command, and the word following this symbol is not treated as a part of document to be printed.
You can place this special symbol anywhere in the document with NJStar Professional version.
íⁿ Commonly used printing commands
The following 4 commands are normally sufficient for most of you to use:
PCX file is a widely supported graphic file format. If you print your NJStar document in this format, the output is sent to the disk as a graphic file, which can be sent to fax software later. You may also want this option if you want to export Japanese characters to other non-Japanese application software, since NJStar's native format cannot be read properly by them.
You can make two sizes of PCX files. From the main NJStar program (by either going through menu,í┌OUTPUT, CREATE PCXí█, or from NJPRINT printing program.
If you choose the first option, you can create 16x16 bit characters. But all the printing commands will appear as characters.
If you choose the second option, you can obtain the output not only in higher resolution but also in the exact format you have specified with NJStar's printing commands. In short, your PCX file will be exactly same form as you would get from your printer.
