Installing MYMW2QIF
===================
Install MYMW2QIF simply by running the SETUP program.
This will install the program in a directory you specify,
and create an ICON in the program manager to run it.
Importing from MYM Windows to Quicken
=====================================
MYMW2QIF supports import of checking, cash, and credit card
account transactions from Managing Your Money for Windows to
Quicken for Windows 3. It is designed to ease the transition
to Quicken, though it is still not totally automatic. The
main advantage of the program is that you can switch to
Quicken but still keep all your old transactions. It does not
currently support transfer of the following:
1) Investment accounts
2) Memorized transactions
The process is largely, but not totally, automated. Since
the approach to category and naming is slightly different
between the two products, I decided to let you create the
categories you want to have in Quicken, and then allow you
to specify the mapping from MYM category names to Quicken
category names. This also lets you cleanup or change your
category names if you want to. The mapping information is
saved between MYMW2QIF runs in a file named C:\MYMW2QIF.MAP.
This file can be deleted at any time, and is only kept
around so you don't have to specify the mappings again if
you run the program more than once.
If you use the following steps, you should be successful in
the transfer.
Step 1: In Quicken (Create categories/accounts)
-----------------------------------------------
Create a new Quicken file, and create all the accounts and
categories you intend to need. The accounts and categories
should correspond to the ones you have in MYM. It is fine
to create both Quicken categories and sub-categories. In a
later step, you will be defining the Quicken category or
sub-category to use for each MYM category.
Create the accounts with a $0 balance and a date like
1/1/88. Later on you can delete the opening transaction
Quicken creates.
Note: I did this step by running both MYM Windows and
Quicken side-by-side. I could then view the MYM accounts
and categories and add similar items to my Quicken file.
Step 2: In Quicken (Export categories)
--------------------------------------
Under the "File" menu, select "Export...". In the dialog
you see, enter a file name to export the categories to, and
select ONLY the "Category List" item (make sure all other
items are not checked). Click OK to create the category QIF
file.
Note: Be sure that the file name you export to does not already
exist. If it does exist, Quicken will append the export
data to the end of the file, but MYMW2QIF may not be able
to read the file in a later step.
Step 3: Run MYMW2QIF (Create account QIF files)
-----------------------------------------------
The program presents several forms to allow you to set some
options. There is an Exit button on each form, and you can
safely Exit at any time.
Form1 : MYM Database Converter
------------------------------
* Enter the name of the directory which has the MYM
database. You can press the "Browse for Directory..."
button to go find it. Be sure and specify the directory
that actually contains the MYM database files (this
is usually a sub-directory inside the MYMWIN directory).
* Enter the name of the category QIF file you created in
Step 2. Again, press "Browse for QIF File..." to go find
it.
* Press Continue...
Form2: Select Accounts
----------------------
* Enter the name of the directory to place the output QIF
file into. The default location is a directory named QIF
inside the directory containing your MYM database.
* Also select the accounts you want to export from MYM.
By default, all accounts are selected. Each account is
exported to a separate file. The name of the file is the
first 8 characters of the account name plus the .QIF suffix.
If two accounts have the same first 8 characters, the 2nd
account will be named with the first 7 characters, followed
by a digit to make it unique.
* Press Continue...
Form3: Map Categories
---------------------
* For each category in the "MYM Category" list, you must
select a category in the "Quicken Category" list. Do this
by selecting each category in the MYM list (on the left)
and then selecting the corresponding Quicken category
(on the right). You will not be able to press "Continue..."
until you have completed this for ALL categories in the MYM
Category list.
* Press Continue... (note that the category mappings you gave
will be saved to C:\MYMW2QIF.MAP at this time)
Note: If you press the Exit button in this step, you will be
asked if you want to save the "category map" first. If you
answer yes the map will be saved so all mappings you have
specified will be remembered the next time you run MYMW2QIF.
Form4: Conversion Status
------------------------
* Finally we are generating one .QIF file for each
account. This form shows the progress of the conversion for
each account. This will take a while for large accounts.
* If you want to cancel the conversion, select the "Stop
Conversion" button.
Step 4: In Quicken (Import each account)
----------------------------------------
Be VERY careful at this step, as it is easy to import the
wrong QIF file into the wrong account. And if you do this,
it is usually easier to delete the Quicken data files and
start all over than it is to delete the transactions you
added to the wrong place.
For each account you have, under the "File" menu, select
"Import...". In the dialog you see, select the account to
import into. Select "Browse..." and find the corresponding
.QIF file generated by MYMW2QIF. And Select ONLY the
"Transactions" item (make sure all other items are not
checked). Then press OK to import the transactions.
Hopefully you got no errors! Double-check that your balance
is the same in Quicken as in MYM. Scan the account register
to see if it looks OK. If the balance is off, check the
first record. Sometimes an extra "Initial Balance" entry is
created. This can be safely deleted.
Try the Quicken GRAPH feature! It allows you to quickly and
easily look at your account category assignments, and to
zoom in all the way to a single transaction!
De-Installing MYMW2QIF
======================
Once you have finished the conversion, you will probably want
to get rid of MYMW2QIF. Simply delete the following:
1) While in the Program Manger, delete the program manager
group for MYMW2QIF.
2) Delete the MYMW2QIF directory created by the install.
3) Delete the file MYMW2QIF.INI in your WINDOWS directory.
4) Delete the C:\MYMW2QIF.MAP file.
5) Delete the QIF files you created.
If you have any problems, please send me mail.
