  26. With the powerful combination of Magestic and Microsoft Excel 5.0, youÆll
  27. be able to fit any data in no time.  No languages to learn, no new syntax 
  28. or programming commands.  Just an interface you already know, backed by a 
  29. powerful optimization engine capable of fitting complicated system as 
  30. easily as simple equations.  If you can express it with an Excel formula 
  31. (or an add-on DLL) then you can fit it with Magestic. Unlike math
  32. spreadsheets or symbolic languages, Magestic was engineered to handle the 
  33. task of data fitting.  Its global optimizer finds hidden solutions when

  116. Magestic is priced less than half of many commercial numerical FORTRAN 
  117. libraries, yet it delivers a complete solution for your data fitting 
  118. needs.  Magestic is currently available for Windows 3.1, Windows 95 and 
  119. Windows NT.  32 Bit version requires Excel 5 for NT or Office 95.

  128. INSTALLATION=======================================================
  129.  
  130. If you are running a previous version of Magestic, you must first
  131. remove it.  See REMOVING below.
  132.  
  133. You should first move the self-extracting file, magdem32.exe to a
  134. temporary directory.
  135.  
  136. You must then run Microsoft Excel 5.
  137.  
  138. In Excel, select File Open and navigate to the directory where
  139. you ran the self-extracting magdem32 program.
  140.  
  141. Select 'install.xls' in the File Open dialog box.
  142.  
  143. It will prompt you for the installation directory which you 
  144. should leave as the default
  145.  
  146. It will then prompt for a destination directory which defaults
  147. to c:\magestic.  You may change this if you wish.
  148.  
  149. Finally after it has completed, you will be asked to read the
  150. license agreement and accept it.
  151.  
  152. REMOVING============================================================
  153. To remove Magestic completely you must follow these steps:
  154.  
  155. 1. Run Excel.
  156. 2. Select the Add-in manager by choosing Add-ins under the Tools menu.
  157. 3. Look for the Add-in 'Magestic Add-In' and de-select it. (i.e., make
  158.    sure that no cross appears to the left of it)
  159. 4. Press the OK button
  160. 5. Quit Excel. (This must be done to complete the Add-in unloading process).
  161. 6. Delete the contents of the magestic directory
  162. 7. Delete the contents of the directory \excel\library\lgx.  (assuming that
  163.    your excel directory is located in \excel).

  165. RUNNING THE DEMONSTRATIONS===========================================
  166.  
  167. 1. Run Excel.
  168. 2. Open the file demo.xls that was placed in the c:\magestic directory
  169.    during installation.
  170. 3. You will see that there are several tabs at the bottom illustrating
  171.    various capabilities of Magestic.  They are as follows:
  172.  
  173.    Simple - very simple loan calculation problem in which the Magestic
  174.             engine is used to calculate the interest backwards from the
  175.             loan payment.  (Yes this is using a sledgehammer to crack
  176.             a peanut, but this is provided just to get your feet wet.)
  177.    Diode - a slightly more realistic example of fitting the parameters
  178.            of a semiconductor diode.  One interesting note here is that
  179.            the diode equation with an internal resistor is implicitly
  180.            defined.  This shows Magestic finding the parameters without
  181.            solving the implicit equation.
  182.    ChemKinetics - a real world illustration of the use of Magestic from
  183.                   a familiar chemical kinetics problem.  This shows the
  184.                   use of Magestic to fit several curves at once to a
  185.                   very nonlinear function.
  186.    ResStep 1-4 - This illustrates fitting the familiar resonance equation.
  187.                  Step 1 is for a single resonance, step 2-4 are for an
  188.                  uncoupled dual resonance.  These steps illustrate the
  189.                  ability to supply analytic gradients, the use of sequenced
  190.                  fits, and the ability to use Excel to create production
  191.                  quality automated parameter fits.

  194. USING THE MAGESTIC WIZARD===============================================
  195. The problems in the demo.xls file were all set up using the magestic
  196. wizard.  The wizard makes it very easy to set up and maintain your
  197. fitting problems.
  198.  
  199. To use the wizard on an existing fit button:
  200.  
  201. 1. Select the button by clicking on it with the RIGHT (not left) mouse 
  202.    button.
  203. 2. Select the Fit Wizard button.  The Fit Wizard button was put in the
  204.    LGX toolbar during the set up.  It is the only button in the bar
  205.    and it has blue M in it with a yellow star over the right side
  206.    of the M.
  207. 3. Explore the various dialogs of the wizard on the problems in the
  208.    demo.xls to see how they were set up.
  209. 4. If you want, you can set up your own problems in the demo.xls sheet
  210.    by selecting the Fit Wizard while no button is selected.  This
  211.    will create a new button with the information you supply to the
  212.    wizard in the wizard dialogs.

  214. LIMITATIONS OF THE DEMO==================================================
  215. The demo is limited in several ways:
  216.   - You can only use the spreadsheet named demo.xls.  No other will work.
  217.   - You can only have 100 data points in your problem.  There is no limit
  218.     in the commercial version.
  219.   - You can fit to no more than 6 parameters simultaneously.  There is no
  220.     limit in the commercial version.
  221.   - There is an upper limit to the number of evaluations the engine
  222.     will make for a fit.
