DiskCare v4.0
Disk Maintenance Program
Written By: Zachariah Tripp
August 1995
INTRODUCTION
This program is a menu driven program which will run the 3 major disk
maintenance programs of DOS. This program is very easy to use. Each DOS
program used has a description of what it does. This program was
designed such that you run everything in order (1 thru 3). I suggest
you run this program as soon as you get it (finish reading this though).
After that you can get away with running it once a month. If you
add/delete games and/or programs to your hard drive I suggest you run
it. If you do a lot of copying/moving of files, unzipping/zipping of
files (like I do) I suggest you run it once a week. I know, another
chore for Saturday. You will be better off in the long run because you
can prevent problems, notice potential problems before they occur and
enable your system to run more efficiently due to a cleaner and neater
hard/disk drive.
DISKCARE HISTORY
v1.0 - Original Black & White Version.
v1.5 - Fixed a couple minor bugs in v1.0 (Spelling errors, for example).
v2.0 - Many new improvments. Cleaner and neater source code. DiskCare
became smaller and more efficient. Color was added (via ANSI.SYS) and
a colorful Title Screen was added. It started to look like a real
program!
v2.5 - Few fixed in v2.0. The annoying 'Press [ESC] to Continue' in the
Title Screen was removed and the way DiskCare checks for ANSI.SYS
was improved.
v3.0 - Added an install program and improved Title Screen.
v3.2 - Imporved install program. It became Easier and Simplier.
v4.0 - IT IS HERE!!! The offical SHAREWARE (hint, hint) release.
Improvements include: Full Screen Graphic Interface.
Breath-taking Color without ANSI.SYS!!
On-Line Help.
Easy-to-Use Menus!
MAIN MENU CHOICES
- CHECK DISK -
Check Disk checks the status of a disk and displays a status report.
Check Disk displays the following information on the screen. I will
explain each part for you. Please note that your numbers will differ.
Volume MAIN FOLDER created 01-01-94 1:23.45p
Volume Serial Number is 155C-1ED2
This tells you the Label Name given to the drive and
when it was created.
23 Lost Allocation Units Found
859,546 Bytes would be freed.
You get 'Lost Allocation Units' when DOS doesn't delete files
completely or application stop unexpected. Fragmented files are left
behind. These 'Lost Files' are usually just taking up space and aren't
used. You will not always have 'Lost Allocation Units'. If you do run
Scan Disk. If your version of DOS does not have Scan Disk then CheckDisk
with the optional 'FIX' option will fix any 'Lost Allocation Units'.
Next Check Disk will display information about your files.
424,875,390 bytes total disk space
8,956 bytes in 7 hidden files
256,789,143 bytes available
Your numbers will be different and it may display more. This
information is basically showing you how much room certain files are
taking up (hidden files for example). It is important to keep your eye
on total bytes available because this is how much room you have left on
your drive.
655,356 total bytes memory
435,434 bytes free
This just shows you how much memory you have and how much is free.
Next Check Disk will display a message about using Scan Disk. This
program using Check Disk to detect any problems (like lost allocation
Units, for example). Scan Disk is used to fix them. Scan Disk should be
run if you there is a problem with the disk.
- SCAN DISK -
Scan Disk is only available on newer versions of DOS (6.2 and higher I
think). Scan Disk should be run when there is problems with the disk.
When you run Scan Disk it will do four functions. It checks the Media
Description, Fat Allocation Tables, Directory Structure and File
System. When DiskCare v3.2 runs Scan Disk it will automatically fix
any problems. If Scandisk finds any problems it will automatically fix
them. ScanDisk will prompt you if you want to make an 'UNDO' disk.
Since 'Lost Allocation Units.' are useless files, I usually skip the
'UNDO', but that is up to you!
Do you have MS-DOS v5.0 or higher? Would you like to upgrade to Version
6.22 for free!!! All you need is World Wide Web Access. Point your Web
Browser towards http:/pubpages.unh.edu/~zet, the Offical No Thrills Software
Web Site! Warning, it may still be under construction!
- DEFRAGMENTATION (defrag) -
DEFRAG organizes your files on the disk. You are given 8 choices on how
you wish to have the files sorted. You can have defrag reboot your
computer (to clean memory) after it is done if you wish. I suggest
doing it in alphabetical order the first time (makes directories
easier to read and find. After that you can sort any way you want.
I suggest keeping the method consistent.
WARNING
When running Defrag, all TSR & CACHE (memory resident programs) should
be disabled. Performing a 'clean' boot is the easiest method to do
so. Restart/Reboot your computer manually. When 'Starting MS-DOS'
appears, Press F-5. MS-DOS should skip over reading your autoexec.bat
and config.sys files, preventing TSR & CACHE programs from being
loaded. Run DiskCare and have Defrag reboot your computer.
Since there are no TSR or CACHE programs loaded, Defrag shouldn't
have any problem rebooting. Just as a warning, Defrag doesn't deal
well with TSR & CACHE programs. I don't know why Microsoft nelegated
to add this warning.
The suggested sequence is first Check Disk, second Scan Disk if any
problems are found and third Defrag.
DiskCare v4.0 is SHAREWARE. I debated long and hard on whether or not to
make it SHAREWARE. I believe this is a decent and useful program. I am only
asking a donation of $7.50. This donation will entitle you to free upgrades
and new releases of DiskCare and/or Discounts on feature programs. I am
currently working on a VGA Style DiskCare. I will mail you your very own
personal copying of DiskCare on a Maxell Diskette. The little NAG SCREEN
while Quiting will be Removed. See/Print REG.DOC for more info.
Even if you aren't a registered user of DiskCare, I would still love to
hear from you with your thoughts and ideas for this program.
