ComICunications was resurrected this week in a new format. For more
information, see ComICunications in this issue, after the CSNsider
report!
Other than that, the week has been relatively slow, a nice, relaxing
change of pace. So I haven't got much more to say. Enjoy the issue!

[2] CSNsider #438 by W. Batty and C. Biggers
This is the CSNsider from CSN #438, which will be in shops on 11/9/95.
It is reproduced in its entirety with the expressed permission of
COMIC SHOP NEWS!
Teknophage, the Tekno Comix spinoff from Mr. Hero the Newmatic Man, comes
to the end of its run in early '96...
Rob Liefeld, the acclaimed illustrator who is also the co-creator of
Cable, returns to his X-Force roots to supply the double gatefold cover
for X-Force #50. "Bob Harras and I spoke at the San Diego Comicon about
the possibility of doing a cover for the fiftieth issue and I jumped at
the chance," Liefeld said. "It's beena long time since I've drawn Cable
and Co., and it was a pleasure to work with Bob once again"...
Look for big changes in the Justice League in '96, as DC refocuses the
team in a single title...
Tom Canty is the latest artist to earn his own trading card series from FPG;
look for the 90-card series, featuring (among other things) Canty's covers
for Michael Moorcock's Eternal Champion series, in January...
FPG highlights the work of a variety of their top illustrators, including
Jeff Jones, Chris Achilleos, Brom, Ken Kelly, Rowena, and others, in their
first Metallic Masters of Fantasy Trading Card Series, also slated for
January release...
Elfquest Surprise: Wendy Pini is taking over the pencilling honors on
Elfquest: Shards, beginning with the fourteenth issue and continuing through
to the title's end with Shards #16...
Classics Illustrated Entertainment has announced plans to release various
Classics Illustrated adaptations on CD-ROM in '96...
The latest Marvel/Malibu crossover co-stars UltraForce, Spider-Man, and
the Green Goblin; look for the two-book crossover from Malibu in January...
Tarzan Versus Predator At the Earth's Core by Walter Simonson and Lee Weeks,
originally scheduled for mid-95 release from Dark Horse, has been pushed
back until January '96...
Walt Simonson reports that the final issue of Star Slammers will eventually
see print once he finds a new home for the series...
Al Columbia's Biologic Show series refuses to stay dead; in reaction to the
positive critical response he got for his Biologic Show story in Zero Zero,
Columbia has prepared Biologic Show #2, an all-new issue, slated for
January '96 release...
Dark Horse Comics has joined the Don't! Buy! Thai! boycott program detailed
in the back of Andrew Vachss' Batman: The Ultimate Evil; the program hopes
to put economic pressure on Thailand to bring an end to the child-sex market
that the government of that country condones...
Madman is currently in motion-picture development at Universal Studios;
creator Michael Allred has written the first-draft script for the film...
Marvel is preparing a special comic book that will be available only in
conjunction with a comic-shop-release version of the upcoming Saturday
Morning compact disc from MCA; the disc features twenty cartoon show theme
songs redone by such popular artists as the Ramones and Matthew Sweet, and
the comic book will feature the work of ten different artists...
Look for a Spawn/WildCATs crossover in early '96...
Adam Hughes and Mark Farmer arreworking on a special Gen 13 project for
February '96 release...
Bob Harras was named Marvel Comics' editor-in-chief on October 20th;
the position had been eliminated since the departure of Tom DeFalco in
favor of the appointment of five executive editors, each of whom oversaw
a portion of the Marvel line. No one is certain what other changes might
follow the reinstatement of the editor-in-chief position. Harras has, for
the past few years, overseen the Marvel mutant books, Marvel's most
successful franchise...
Stuart Moore has reported that DC will launch a new science fiction imprint,
Matrix, in mid-'96; creators involved in the line include Howard Chaykin,
Tim Truman, and Eduardo Barretto...
The CSNsider is just a small part of each issue of Comic Shop News.
CSN #438 features Phoenix Resurrection from Marvel and Malibu Comics
on the cover. This is an all news issue that you won't want to miss.

[To: The Comic Book Net]
[Re: EDITORIAL - The NEW ComICunications!]
[Date: 10/27/95]
Well, welcome to the ALL NEW ComICunications. The new format will make
it easier for me to provide constant updates and reviews as they are
written, and easier for you to find reviews and news stories that interest
you.
Reviews and news stories will be posted in the Comic Book Net conferences
that they pertain to. That is, DC news will be posted in the DC Chat
conference, with Image news in the Image Chat conference, etc. In the RIME
conference and the Comic Book Net E-Mag, I will post weekly compilations of
CBN postings. *whew*. Catch all that? That way, you can read the stuff you
want to, and ignore the stuff you don't want to read. Easier for me, easier
for you. Cool, huh?
Your next question will most likely be "Why?". Why do I even bother?
What's in it for ME? To be honest, I'm doing this because, frankly, I'm
looking for a good reason to dig up all this comics & comics-related news,
and this gives me a great excuse. So while I keep all of you updated, I get
to keep mySELF updated! See? Everyone comes out a winner! :)
Yokie doke. I guess that about covers things. The new comics reviews and
news items should start trickling into the net this weekend. 'Till then!
Best,

[4] The 25th Hour, by Mike Imboden
Other than MARVEL VS DC #2 the offerings look a little slim. A new
2099 "X" book, some more rumblings in the Avengers as Cap, Thor and
Iron Man return to the team for the first time in a zillion years,
Reed Richards returns to Four Freedom Plaza for the first time in a
zillion months, perhaps Rogue and Gambit will reconcile as a new
villain threatens the X-men, Wolverine gears up for his hundredth
issue, someone forgot to shut the door between the Marvelverse and
the Ultraverse as Ultraforce teams up with Spider-Man in a nifty 1
shot with two parts; both start and end the same but the middle
portions deviate.
And then there's this tidbit from the Spider-Man section. Your
initial reaction will most likely mirror my own, that being one of
disgust and "Enough is enough". But one never knows... Maybe it will,
heck, read it or yourself...
"A cold wind blows through the streets of New York City on a grey
winter's day. Snow covers the grimy sidewalks. A wrecking crew fights
the chill as it dismantles an old factory building..."
[you know what's coming, right? -mike]
"...Amid the shattered bricks and torn pipes, a worker finds a
skeleton. A frayed piece of charred red cloth with a black web
pattern on it clings precariously to a bone. And so with this simple
yet shocking discovery, a saga begins that will change the life of
Spider-Man forever."
Now, is it just me, or didn't a saga just frickin' END that changed
his life forever? I know time is skewed in the Marvel U, but cripes,
shouldn't forever last at least a year?
So, that's the clone from ASM #149 obviously. Which means Ben Reilly
CAN'T be the real Spider-Man since "Peter Parker" had been Spider-Man
since then and there was never a time for anyone to pull a
switcheroo, which means Ben is simply a pawn with fake memories. My
hunch? Seward Trainer ain't who he appears to be. We learn what I
just said, and find out Seward rigged the tests he ran on Mary Jane
to freak her and Peter out to get them out of the picture. Where it
goes from there, I dunno..
Last interesting bit. Apparently Marvel has even given up hopes of
seeing Cap beat The Bat in the big throw down as the cover of Mega
Marvel, the retailer's ordering catalog, shows Bats facing off
against Wolverine. <snicker>

[5] Some Stuff, by Nathan Bredfeldt
I've found her...the most perfect woman in the world.
In a recent hormone-induced fit of girl picture looking at (at work,
no less) I stumbled upon a picture (in Previews, no less) of Ms Perfect.
Not just for me, either. She's perfect for you, you, not you ma'am, or any
other single guy who's reading this.
Granted, I don't actually KNOW her or anything. Just seen the
picture, and gotten some bits of info off Fidonet and RIME, and stuff. Yes,
this alone is enough to instill confidence in me that she is Ms Right.
Her name...Cathy Christian
<Dramatic pause, as fanboys agree with me, anti-fanboys try to put me out
of my misery, and a few folks stand around looking confused.>
For those of you who don't know, Ms Christian is the model after
which Maximum's super bad girl, Avenglyne is patterned. Photos of this
lovely lady can be seen almost every month in Previews (and no matter how
hard I look, I just can't see similarities between the model and the comic
character).
Think about it: She's already in the comics industry. No more of
that embarassing first date dilemma of confessing your hobby: "What kind of
hobbies do you have?" She asks. "I read comics." You say. She excuses
herself to the bathroom, and never returns. I can't count on my fingers and
toes how many times this has happened to me. Not so with Ms Christian. If
she gets up to leave, just point out the simple fact: "So are you."
Also, she's an incredibly attractive young lady. She puts all the
bad girls to shame. Everyone you meet will envy you. Especially those
drooling fanboys. Hasn't anyone else always wanted to be the envy of
millions...well hundreds of drooling fanboys? Sure, you have...
And of course, she's practically a free ticket into the comics
industry! Say you wanted to write. But, nobody likes your stuff. No
problem. I bet lots of people would jump at the chance to buy an issue of
Avenglyne written by Ms Avenglyne herself! Yes, Ghost writing is a
legitimate art form. And hey, if you're at least half good, you'll be a
full time writer for Maximum in no time!
Of course, there are drawbacks. Chief amongst them is the fact that
Ms Christian is currently dating (if not engaged to) Image bad boy Tony
Lobito. That's right. The man is so slick that he pulled the rug out from
under four or five Image titles without any legitimate explanation, and
nobody cared! Sure, a few folks griped about it for a while, but nothing
really changed.
Also, jealous types need not apply. Imagine a million (well, a few
thousand) guys looking at pictures of your girlfriend/wife in skimpy
clothes. Now, imagine them doing it every month (well, it's Maximum...every
other month). Pretty scary, huh? I don't think I could take it.
Also, the problem with all modeling careers: they don't last long.
So, none of that "I want to be a writer, so while you earn money, I will
stay home and work on my screenplay. But, don't worry, I'll do my part
around the house by vacuuming once a week." Not gonna work (which is a
shame, really). You'll have to pull your own weight, or (if you're really
lazy) marry one of those big name actresses.
All in all, I think it would be great to at least go out with her,
or any model for that matter. The new Vampirella is a babe compared to the
first one, and some of those ladies on those hair care commercials; wow!
And, just so I don't totally aliennate all the female readers out there:
how `bout that really cute guy? The one that's in all those movies? What
a hunk!
<Nathan Bredfelt's lifelong goal is to open his own flea dip parlor.
In the meantime, he'll settle for writing. Nate can be reached at
ComicBkNet@aol.com>

[6] An Open Letter to Marvel, from Dave LeBlanc
RE: WOLVERINE #100
TO: MARVEL COMICS
I was just reminded that Wolverine #100 is rapidly approaching.
Normally I would say BFD! As I thought more about landmark issues and
my current attitude concerning the quality of Marvel Comics I felt a bit
more compelled to put out some thoughts for consideration.
To put things in perspective, I am a comic book reader of several
decades, having witnessed the beginnings of Marvel and the Silver Age
and everything since. This past year has been the most distressing, and
I have dropped all Marvel product from my pull list at my local comic
store. The over used phrase, "not getting my bang for the buck",
applied to every comic with the Big M on it and sadly, the same thing
happened to the little M, (Malibu), around the time Marvel acquired
them. I am not one of those that abandoned the traditional super hero
fare for the more eclectic and fast rising genre, like Bone and
Strangers in Paradise, although I count those now in my regular reads.
I am a traditionalist and have found the quality work in the traditional
fare in works such as Starman at DC and Kurt Busiek's Astro City at
Image among many other worthwhile titles. Not so with anything I have
read from Marvel. So what does this have to do with Wolverine #100?
I have no idea what Marvel has planned for this issue. Rumor has been
floating for a long time that the adamantium will be coming back to his
bones. That would make sense to anyone who follows the character. BUT
look at some of the things that the House of Ideas has done lately and
wonder if they try to make sense. (can you say Spider-clones?)
My appeal, from a disgruntled, former fan who wants to be entertained
once again by the characters who had life, who were real, who made you
yearn for the next chapter as soon as you finished the latest issue?
DON'T make WOLVERINE #100 a $3.95 chrome plated issue.
DON'T make WOLVERINE #100 anymore than a double sized issue at less
than double the price of a regular issue.
DO make it a story that makes SENSE and has a beginning, middle and end
and has some long lasting effects.
I have been SO disappointed with EVERY landmark issue in the last year
or two that I am ready to scream. Why does every issue divisible by 25
have to be overpriced and less enjoyable than the Sunday funnies in the
local paper?
IF Marvel can just this once, treat this special occasion with an
attitude other than a chance to *cash in* I promise to give the title a
try. I'll be looking for the solicitation with anticipation. What do
you think will happen folks?

[7] Jeff Nicholson News, by Dave Drew
I just Jeff Nicholson's newsletter and wanted to pass along this one
little tidbit from it:
NO REGRETS OVER VERTIGO ENCOUNTER
While working on FATHER AND SON, I was approached by DC/Vertigo to
script some issues of THE DREAMING, a new bi-monthly series
scheduled for February of 1996 that will be a sequel / spin-off to
THE SANDMAN. In the early stages of the project I was offered free
reign to create new characters, and I turned in a proposal for a
five issue story arc called NO REGRETS. After a few revisions, the
editorial direction of THE DREAMING shifted to that of using more
esablished characters, so I worked on a new proposal for a single
issue involving Mervyn Pumpkinhead. The proposal was accepted with a
re-written ending, but the editor I was working with went on
maternity leave, putting the whole thing in limbo. The ball's in
their court, so to speak, but if you'd like to see my story, "Days
Work, Nights Rest" get published, feel free to write and bother:
Alisa Kwitney, DC/Vertigo, 1700 Broadway, NY NY 10019.
Anyway, NO REGRETS is still my story and I decided to draw it myself
in a sort of THROUGH THE HABITRAILS style. I edited it down from a
five issue story arc to about 50 pages. It will be appearing in
chapters in the Caliber Press anthology NEGATIVE BURN beginning in
issue 30 in December.

[9] Splash Page
From: Chris Oarr
A new issue of The Staros Report will be available in December. Issue
#3 is 112 pages in a comic book sized format with over twenty pages of
comic art. Features include an extensive interview with Eddie Campbell
(over 40 pages), a Love and Rockets geneology, an updated "Amateur's
Guide to the Best Comics," and a 12 page comic story written by Staros
himself. Eddie Campbell drew the cover for this issue and an ad that
will appear on the back cover of Bacchus #7.
Chris is a swell guy with good comix sensibilities. The "Amateur's
Guide" in his last Report had me scrambling for all kinds of comics. I
must have dropped $200 within three months of reading it. The new Guide
is almost twice its previous size at over 150 entries, each with a
paragraph or two to give you the skinny. Recommended reading for the
comix nut.
This issue of the Staros Report will be available through Diamond and
Capital in either January or February, but you can get your copy
in December direct from Chris. Send $4.95 to Chris Staros at P.O. Box

[10] Letters to the Net
From: GREGORY WARREN <EKAOGWW@MVS.OAC.UCLA.EDU>
Subject: BRIEF CRITIQUE
This is just a note to let you know that I definitely enjoy the newsletter
which you provide in the Comic Book Net E-Mag. Although I am behind
on reading them, I definitely wanted to respond to your request for
input on whether or not we read your newsletter.
Although I also read the Comics Buyer's Guide each week, I still have
found lots of interesting material to read in your newsletters.
Keep up the good work.
Thanks for listening.
---->Gregory Warren, Jr.
Gregory,
Hey, thanks for writing!
I think you'll find that our e-mag fills a _different_ niche than,
say, Comic Buyers' Guide or Wizard. We are mainly using the mag
to let other folks know what's going on in the Comic Book Net itself.
Glad that it's working. :)
Best,
--Ry
Editor

[12] Join in the fun!
You too can enjoy the intelligent conversations and informative threads
that occupy the conferences of the Comic Book Net every day! However,
many people who read this e-mag aren't familiar with the Local BBS
echo-mail system....
Bulletin Board Systems are scattered everywhere across the USofA, and
many of them are free! Chances are, if you have a modem you have
the accompanying communications software. Using the Terminal Emulation
software that came with your modem, you can dial up one of the many
systems linked into CBN (see the listings down a few paragraphs). Most
of the boards offer all the message echoes in the Comic Book Network...
there are message bases devoted to all the bigger comics publishers, as
well as big Small Press and Independent message bases, not to mention
sections for general (doesn't even have to be about comics!)
conversation.
If you are worried about long distance charges, worry no longer! Most
if not all the BBS's offer a mail service from which you can download
a .QWK packet of recent e-mail to read offline with a program called
an offline mail reader. You can read & write messages at your leisure,
and then upload your own messages & replies the next time you call your
local BBS. There are many .QWK packet readers out there, for every
type of computer system. They all give you a better explaination in
their documentation than I can. These programs are available all over
the Internet and are downloadable from most BBS's.
These "mail runs" (dialing up, downloading the mail packet and uploading
replies) generally take less than 5 minutes to accomplish, and at the
average after-5pm/weekends/holidays long distance phone rates, that is
LESS THAN 75¢! See? Even less expensive than many of the commercial
information services available! :)
So what else can you find on free BBS systems? Theres plenty of files
for specific types of computers. Some systems also offer other types
of message networks ranging from general topics to specific themes
like sci-fi, role playing, games, music, etc. And, let's not forget
online games. Join into the many different multiplayer games, each
system sports different challenges. There's nothing like becoming
the most powerful being in a online adventure!
And when you _do_ log on, leave a message in The Bullpen conference to
ALL, and introduce yourself to us! You're guaranteed to get plenty of
replies and all the help you need to join in the fun!
Best,
--Ry, the editor, with assists from Ed Dukeshire.
