[1] The Bullpen by Ryan Brewster
Notice, this issue is out ON TIME!!! :) Whee! I'm getting the hang of
things....
First off, let me point you to an extremely exciting column that we've
just gotten from Marc Sparks, Out of Africa! If you don't read anything
else this month, read this guy's insights on the comic book scene in
Africa!
Well, the CBN Elections have come to a conclusion and the new Net Admin
Team has been elected! The newly-elected members are Ed Dukeshire, Mike
Imboden, William Hughes, Jacob Greenberg and myself, Ryan Brewster. Many
thanks to those who voted, and to the members of last year's NAT team
who really got us started off.
The first issue of the Comic Book Net APA is OUT! Issue #1 contains
_7_ submissions and totals 58 pages. Congrats to all those involved and
thanks to Ed Dukeshire for coordinating the whole thing.
Nate Bredfeldt has returned to us after losing access to CBN (and RIME,
and Internet, and...). You can find his column, Some Stuff, in this
issue.
Nate has also (finally!) started up a CBN Role-playing game in the CBN:
RPG's conference! Hurry up and sign up to participate, they've just about
started...
The CBN's collaborative fanfic title Death-X-Blood-Force has been
concluded in a blockbuster issue #11 by Mike Imboden. I will be starting
up a new collaborative fanfic title, "The Ring" in the near future.
The DC/Marvel Marvel/DC crossover has generated a lot of discussion on
CBN as you can imagine, with everybody having their own ideas as to the
outcome of the contests.
And before I go, I'll quickly apologize for a minor typo in the last
issue... Seems I forgot to change the issue number in the header!!! So
last issue wasn't another CBN E-Mag #27, okay? :)
Best,

[2] CSNsider #434 by W. Batty and C. Biggers
This is the CSNsider #434, which will be in shops on 10/12/95.
It is reproduced in its entirety with the expressed permission of
COMIC SHOP NEWS!
The major DC Versus Marvel crossover miniseries beginning in December has
generated a great deal of publicity, with articles showing up in USA Today,
on various television newsmagazines and entertainment features, and in wire
service stories carried by papers across the country...
Dale Keown has announced that The Pitt, thus far published under the Image
imprint, will leave the company as Keown ventures into the self-publishing
field...
Editorial changes are underway at Acclaim, with Tony Bedard and Jesse
Berdinka leaving the editorial team...
Wizards of the Coast recently announced a price increase for all Magic: The
Gathering cards, effective September 1st; the new starter price is $8.95,
the booster price is $2.95, and the Chronicles price increases to $2.45;
while the package is being redesigned to display the new price, it's likely
that some stores will receive some boxes that don't reflect the new
prices...
Erik Larsen ventures into cyberspace this fall with the release of a
comprehensive Erik Larsen Double CD-ROM Comic Book Anthology featuring
entire runs of Savage Dragon, SuperPatriot, Freak Force, and other Highbrow
Entertainment books (complete through May '95); the CD-ROM features over
1300 pages of comics material, and is designed to work with both Windows
and Macintosh computer systems...
Archie Comics spoofs the popular Fox TV series The X-Files in December...
Heartbreaker Hobbies is hoping to coordinate the release of their upcoming
James Bond Collectible Card Game starters and boosters with the debut of
the new James film, Goldeneye; both are slated for mid-November release...
Kitchen Sink will reprint the entire run of Scott McCloud's Zot! beginning
next year, with many of the issues appearing in color for the first time...
Berkley/Putnam has been sufficiently pleased with response to their
Spider-Man and Hulk original novels that the company plans to issue at
least three new Marvel superhero novels in 1996...
Stan Lee will appear in the upcoming film Mallrats, playing himself; much
of the action in this film revolves around a mall comic shop, and some of
the comics-related art for the film is supplied by Dave Johnson, Adam
Hughes, and others...
Look for Rune to play a more major role in the Marvel Universe in '96...
And it looks like those Image/Marvel crossover books that were initially
anticipated in late '95 aren't going to appear until mid to late '96 at the
earliest, according to an Image insider...
CSN #434 features Batman: The Ultimate Evil from DC Comics and Warner Books
on the cover as well as more news and reviews.

* Well, you'll see the new format for the reviews this week. Let me know
what you think, positive or negative.
* For those of you on CompuServe, be sure to check out Ronald-Thomas
Fleming's Comics Information Network uploads in the Industry News
section! Finally, a daily comics news service to take Comics/Animation
Newswire's place!
* I for one think that the upcoming Marvel/DC crossover sounds cool...
I do hope they'll work in more of a _story_ than they seem to be admitting
to, but what I've heard sounds like it'll be fun. And it may attract
some much-needed attention in this direction...
* I'm finding myself enjoying Chris Claremont's Sovereign Seven, despite
its bad reviews. Mayhaps people had their hopes a little _too_ high?
* I'm very happy to see Starman gaining the critical acclaim it has. That
comic has got to be among the best superhero titles on the racks today!
* Speaking of the best superhero titles, anybody catch Mark Waid's
Captain America issues so far? (Shut up, Chris! <EG>) <-Inside Joke
I'm really impressed with it thus far, as it brings hero's former
glory back.
* Last year, Marvel published six issues each of the Marvel Superheroes
Megazine and the Spider-Man Megazine. Each $2.95 issue contained _96_
pages of reprinted, classic superhero stories! Marvel has _kind of_
redeemed themselves (after cancelling those books, I vowed not to forgive
their monstrosity) with their new 99¢ comics. Still, I feel their
cancellation of the two reprint comics was unfair not only to me, but to
all the fans who bought the books.
Well, that's that. See ya next week (I hope!)

I reported that Neil Gaiman would write the Extreme Studios/Image Comics'-

Explorers #1
by Terry Collins and Bill Neville
Published by Explorer Press, PO Box 1907, Mount Airy, NC 27030
Premise: It's Jonny Quest meets the X-Files as the unique Hunt family
and their dinosaur solve baffling cases as Xenology, Inc (Xenology -
"The Science of the Strange").
This Issue: Dr. Hunt's ex-girlfriend sends killer robots to attack
Xenology, Inc.
IMHO: Explorers takes the better aspects of Jonny Quest, X-Files and
adds its own flair to make this a book to watch. The art by Bill
Neville is crisp and professional, and the story by Terry Collins
is well plotted. This issue was a very good start.
Explorers is a well-crafted comic of surprising quality that one may
not expect form a small press publisher. This is one to add to your
must see list.
Hero Illustrated on the Web
http://www.nuke.com
Content: An online comic book information source. Contains news, reviews,
interviews, features and a price guide. Columns and features are updated
constantly rather than, say, monthly.
IMHO: This web page blows any _printed_ comic publication out of the
water. The inherently graphical personality of the World Wide Web fits
the Comics medium perfectly, and Hero Illustrated takes advantage of
that. While giving up their printed version may cost them a large market
of readers, concentrating on their Web publication allows them to turn out
a very nice product.
I would like to see the price guide format changed, however, so that one
can simply enter the title of a comic in a field to get the comic's
pricing information.
Besides that, Hero Illustrated Online rocks!

[4] Out of Africa, by Marc Sparks
There's comic book fans in Africa? Well yes there are, there's a small
number of us (that I know of), and we're mostly speadout over the country,
and until recently there's been very little to be had in the way of
cohesive fan groups. Thats changing.
Lets understand the problem, for the most part of 15yrs South African comic
book fans have been at the mercy of `Intermag', unreliable, inconcistant,
and offering a pricing structure that bears little or no resembance to
economics or exchange rates, Intermag did its level best of destroy the comic
book culture in this country. Economic sanctions and cultural boycotts (a
truely silly concept) didn't help either.
Oh there were a few exceptions, a few shops that imported directly from the
US & UK, but alas for the scattered fans across the country they could be
found only in Johannesburg.
So what's changed? The country's changed, our move towards democracy has
resulted in it becoming far easier for local publishers to acquire printing
rights, and recently two competing presses emerged.
Rapid acquisition of rights seemed to become the name of game, with one
(Meteor) publisher getting the Marvel, Disney & Bongo rights, and the other
(Battleaxe) the DC, Image, Fleetway, Warner & Harvey properties.
Numbers of titles are still low, with a concentration on the more
commercial characters (X-titles, Spider-man, Superman, Batman, Lobo, Spawn
& Judge Dredd (in time for the movie release here)). It's not so much the
local printing (and pricing) thats the good sign, but the editorial
committment to fan involvement. These guys want to create a culture, and
when I look at the letters pages and the people writing in from small towns
across the nation, I become very encouraged that a renaissance is upon us.
Well thats what's happening on the Southern tip of Africa comic-wise,
anybody is invited to mail-me at:-
Figment@Connx.Vironix.Co.Za
and I'll try to answer you mail.
Lastly, what I collect, which is more of a reflection of whats available
than anything else, ~L~ indicates local pressing.:-
Flash
Lobo-L
Spawn-L
X-men-L
Generation X-L
Judge Dredd: Lawman of the Future-L
What I would like but can't get:-
Ray
Impulse
Miracleman
Personal recommendations :~Zenith~ storyline by Fleetway if you can get it.

[5] Pressing the Issue, by Ronald-Thomas Fleming
If you have never gotten into small press comics, then perhaps the
reviews below will help to whet your appetite for something new and
different. Give these zines a shot. I doubt if you will be
disappointed.
First, Steve Shipley is back again with another collection of fine
cartoons in his new digest Toons (digest, 16 pp, $1.00, Steve Shipley,
1840 Garden Ridge, Apt. 3, Toledo, OH 43614). Steve also happens to be
the chairman of Pizazz Comics, which is a group of small pressers who put
out high quality comics done in good taste. All Pizazz titles are devoid
of violence, sex, gore and drugs. Even better about Toons is that it
serves as an excellent primer to get your son or little brother into small
press and comics at the same time. These cartoons are really funny and
enjoyable for all ages.
John Kline's The Last Good Guy (digest, 28pp, $1.00 264B Woplers,
Columbia, MO 65201) is still one of my favorite zines. The story takes
place in 2162, where astronomers have said a giant meteor will destroy the
earth in less than a year. The only alternative is shuttles to the
recently colonized Mars, but there are only a few shuttles. Worse only the
rich can afford to go. The have and have-nots start fighting and a civil
war breaks out. From the chaos comes Abel, the last good guy, who
believes there is an alternative to chaos. Cool storyline and even cooler
art. Kline's style is so different and fresh. On the subject of cool
art, there is Tyim Courts Goatee Comics (digest, 48 pp, $2.00, 5545
Montgomery Road Apt. #1, Cincinnati OH 45212). This an anthology
featuring Tyim's work and his work is something to behold. Great stories
and always something neat in his comix.
Sometimes a zine will catch your eye, because it looks different and
stands out among a pile. Angel of Justice (newsletter, 24 pp, $2.00,
George Sportelli, PO Box 912, San Jacinto CA 92583) This is one of those
and I think it has to do with the art. It is rather unique and blends
dark colors into even darker moods. The series focus is more of a
supernatural vigilante than a superhero and it isn't dark and somber,
because that is one of the latest crazes. It is so, because it fits into
the framework of the story, which isn't a real light. It deals with child
abuse that is real, without being exploitive. Definitely a zine with some
real potential.
And have you heard about Nik Dirga's Amoeba Adventures (digest, 32 pp,
$2.00, Protoplasm Press, PO Box 2230, University, MS 38667-2230) which
has been a big hit in small press for years? This is about as good as you
can get and Dirga, along with artist Max Ink, keep on outdoing themselves
each issue. In the latest installment, it is Christmas time for
Prometheus and the all All-Spongy guys with a special return engagement of
Rambunny. Nik Dirga proves once again why he and artist supreme Max Ink
make this one of the best comics around. As in each issue, this one is
packed with more things than you could possibly imagine and better yet is
the fine characterization by Dirga. This zine has been around for many
years and Dirga remains true to the past, while still allowing his
characters to grow and expand in unexpected ways. This is a real gem,
combining humor, drama, superheroics and an amazing cast that includes
among other things a cactus man. Gotta check this out!
(Ronald-Thomas Fleming runs the comics news and information service,
Comics Information Network, on CompuServe and the best way to reach him
is at RTFleming@microsoft.com)

Hi All. Today, I'll talk about the upcoming Marvel/DC crossover
which I think is just plain STUPID. A ratings booster that will just
drop both company's image. Here is the opinion of some of the CBN reg-

if anyone voiced there opinions in any others, it wasn't recorded by me.

Generation X #8,9
Price: $1.95 Vol. 1 No. 9
Someplace Other Than Here
I've been following this book since it first came out. It has
the best continuity I have seen in an X-Book in a LONG LONG time.
The art continues to be AWESOME. Someone should give this colorist
a million dollars.
This story starts with the team, minus Artie and Leech,
investigating the disappearance of Cassidy Keep (Banshee's
Family's Castle). Synch and Chamber jump into a mysterious
green fog and get transported to a strange Pocket Dimension
populate by Elves, Trolls, Fairies and Ogres. They find
themselves in the middle of a fight between some Trolls (?)
and Elves and help out in the fight, kicking some Troll
butt.
The rest of the team leaps after
them and end up on the top turret of Cassidy Keep but pass out
soon after because of the lack of Oxygen in the air.
Banshee and Emma Frost wake up in a dungeon with an
old friend of the Cassidy's, Eamon O'Donell. Banshee soon
frees them of there bonds and Emma defeats an Ogre with a quick
psi blast. Penance, Skin, Jubilee, M and Husk wake up with a
Fairy Queen hovering above them, ominously, telling them of a
prophesy that includes them saving a "glamour machine." Angelo
quickly disproves this, showing everyone that the Fairy Queen
is a fraud but M goes into one of her trances and starts fixing
the glamour machine anyway. Jubilee and Husk follow to keep
an eye on her. The issue ends with Skin and Penance encountering
a domineering cigar smoking dragon.
The story picks up with Skin sparring verbally with the
dragon, while Penance watches, mystified. The fairies take
Skin and Chamber to there home, coincidentally just a wall away
from where Banshee and Emma Frost are fighting a dungeon guard.
They meet up and defeat the Ogre.
We revisit Skin and Penance, with Skin desperately trying
to best the dragon. Penance, experimentally, pokes the dragon
and finds out a new use for her diamond hard skin. Angelo quickly
defeats the dragon with the help of Penance.
M fixes the machine, with some help with the help of Husk
and Jubilee. But even with the machine fixed it needs a temporary
"starter flame." We finally see the full extent of Chamber's
power when he jump starts the machine single handedly with a giant
psionic blast. It all ends well with a heart-warming (sort of)
conversation between M and Emma before the Castle teleports back
to our current dimension.
Overall, a GREAT story line.

[7] Comic Comments, by John Keady
Not too much this week since it's not a Hikeeba week but some good
readin!
Superman #106- Part 2 of the Trial of Superman. Not a bad issue. I could
feel for Supermans plight as a kangaroo court makes a mockery of justice
and a notable villan dies in this issue. At least this isn't the dud
story arcs that have been a part of the title for the last year or so.
B-
Shadow of the Bat #44- UGH! Kitson is back. I am not happy. Story ruined
by wretched art. PU D
Starman #13- This is the first issue of this title I've bought since the
#0 issue. WHile I may not get this title regularly I can easily see why
this one has gained the following it has. That Dr. Phospherous is pretty
disgusting! :) B
Legion of Superheroes #74- Part 2 of Future Tense was a hoot to read.
The humor on this title is almost as good as what goes on in Superboy.
Pretty fun! C+
Green Lantern #68- Mr Freeze is one of my favorite villans and seeing
him revamped was a joy to see! The other villan Purgatory makes his
debut but leaves me wondering why he is the way he is. He seemed to be
a pretty nice guy so why he made such a turn puzzles me. All in all a
good issue with my fave artist of the moment Paul Pelletier! B

"Holy S#!+!!! ... a MUST read."

"I don't get it."

The Collected Sam & Max--Surfin' the Highway is replete with the wry
humor, witty repartee, unabashedly antisocial behavior, and first class
graphics that have earned this quirky pair of furry flatfoots a rabidly
devoted following.
From the pair's undercover stint as "terrifying hairy bikers" who visit a
tattoo parlor to experience the timeless "ritual of primitive
disfigurement," to their trigger-happy and danger-riddled quest to rid
the Moon of giant cockroaches, this is a hilariously twisted, distinctively
rendered, and action packed adventure with America's favorite Freelance
Police.
-The first time *all* the Sam & Max material has been collected into one
volume. Yep we got them *all* -- all the Fishwrap, Critters, First,
Comico, Epic and LucasArts stories.
-One page strips for short attention spans and a cover gallery for those
who can't read at all!
-162 pages of Sam & Max stories and artwork--more than you can shake a
delusional, psychotic white rabbit at! Includes a 32-page gallery of
hypnotically dazzling color artwork!
-Plus pinheaded games and activity pages to keep you busy and off the
streets.
The Collected Sam & Max--Surfin' the Highway, truly the only book you'll
ever need.

[11] Join the Fun!
You too can enjoy the intelligent conversations and informative threads
that occupy the conferences of the Comic Book Net every day! However,
many people who read this e-mag aren't familiar with the Local BBS
echo-mail system....
Bulletin Board Systems are scattered everywhere across the USofA, and
many of them are free! Chances are, if you have a modem you have
the accompanying communications software. Using the Terminal Emulation
software that came with your modem, you can dial up one of the many
systems linked into CBN (see the listings down a few paragraphs). Most
of the boards offer all the message echoes in the Comic Book Network...
there are message bases devoted to all the bigger comics publishers, as
well as big Small Press and Independent message bases, not to mention
sections for general (doesn't even have to be about comics!)
conversation.
If you are worried about long distance charges, worry no longer! Most
if not all the BBS's offer a mail service from which you can download
a .QWK packet of recent e-mail to read offline with a program called
an offline mail reader. You can read & write messages at your leisure,
and then upload your own messages & replies the next time you call your
local BBS. There are many .QWK packet readers out there, for every
type of computer system. They all give you a better explaination in
their documentation than I can. These programs are available all over
the Internet and are downloadable from most BBS's.
These "mail runs" (dialing up, downloading the mail packet and uploading
replies) generally take less than 5 minutes to accomplish, and at the
average after-5pm/weekends/holidays long distance phone rates, that is
LESS THAN 75¢! See? Even less expensive than many of the commercial
information services available! :)
So what else can you find on free BBS systems? Theres plenty of files
for specific types of computers. Some systems also offer other types
of message networks ranging from general topics to specific themes
like sci-fi, role playing, games, music, etc. And, let's not forget
online games. Join into the many different multiplayer games, each
system sports different challenges. There's nothing like becoming
the most powerful being in a online adventure!
And when you _do_ log on, leave a message in The Bullpen conference to
ALL, and introduce yourself to us! You're guaranteed to get plenty of
replies and all the help you need to join in the fun!
Best,
--Ry, the editor, with assists from Ed Dukeshire.
