Installation & Startup Guide for OWL Basic Bookkeeping
Version 4 - for Windows
Copyright (c) 1995 - All Rights Reserved
This guide covers installation and startup of OWL Basic Bookkeeping
(BBK) for Windows Version 4. The complete User's Guide is built
into the program and is accessed by selecting the "Help" option.
In order to get the most benefit from this program, we strongly
suggest that you read the user's guide.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
BBK provides organized and accurate accounting using the
"single-entry" bookkeeping method recommended by the IRS. This
method is easy to use and especially suited for small
businesses and individuals.
BBK helps you manage your bottom line by giving you instant
access to up-to-the-minute reports showing your income,
expenses, profits and losses. You don't need to be an
accountant to use BBK. By spending just a few minutes a week
with BBK, you can dramatically reduce your accounting costs.
Instead of a shoe box full of receipts, you can give your
accountant comprehensive reports that will save his or her time
and your money.
BBK can handle up to 1000 different expense types and supports
both calendar and fiscal year accounting. BBK's accounting
folders allow independent bookkeeping for multiple businesses
or multiple business elements within the same business.
An import option within Basic Bookkeeping links the program to
OWL's Sales, Invoicing & Mail List management program (OASIS)
allowing direct transfer of income data from OASIS into Basic
Bookkeeping.
OWL Basic Bookkeeping (BBK) was rated among the "Best of
Business Shareware" by PC World magazine (Feb., 1994).
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
OWL Basic Bookkeeping requires:
- Microsoft Windows 3.1 or above
- A hard disk with approximately 1.5 Megabytes of
available space
- 4 Megabytes of memory.
UPGRADING FROM EARLIER VERSIONS (Versions 1 through 3 for DOS)
Complete instructions for upgrading your data files from Basic
Bookkeeping Versions 1 through 3 are contained in the user's
guide. When installing Basic Bookkeeping for Windows, DO NOT
install it in the same directory where your DOS version of
Basic Bookkeeping is installed.
INSTALLATION
If you downloaded OWL Basic Bookkeeping from an on-line source,
you should first create an installation floppy disk containing
the following 16 files.
install.exe winstall.inf bbk.ex_ bbkhelp.hl_
bbk4w.db_ acc.db_ exp3.db_ inc3.db_
folder.db_ orderb.doc readme.bbk cb5.dl_
vbrun300.dll commdlg.dl_ cc2.vb_ cmdialog.vb_
Alternatively, you may copy these files to an empty directory
on your hard disk.
NOTE: When downloading from some on-line services, file
"vbrun300.dll" may be missing. If this is the case, this file
will be available as a separate download (look for
"vbrun300.dll" or "vbrun300.zip"). This file is available:
on Internet via anonymous FTP
from: oak.oakland.edu
file: /simtel/win3/dll/vbrun300.zip
on CompuServe:
from: WinShare (go winshare) library 1
file: vbrun3.zip
on America On-Line
file: vbrun300.zip
Since many programs use this standard file and you may already
have it on your system. Before downloading it, check your
\Windows\System directory to see if you already have file
"vbrun300.dll". If you already have this file, you may
proceed with the installation without including it on your
installation disk. In this case, the installation program
will report that the installation was incomplete. You may
ignore this message.
If you must download vbrun300.dll seperately, copy it to your
installation diskette before proceeding with the installation.
To install OWL Basic Bookkeeping for Windows, use the Program
Manager or File Manager to start INSTALL.EXE as you would any
other Windows-based application. For example, if you are
installing from drive A:
1. From the Program Manager File menu, choose Run.
2. In the Run dialog box, type A:INSTALL and choose OK.
The install program will allow you to select the drive and
directory where basic bookkeeping will be installed. The
default is c:\Owl_Bus. We suggest that you use the default.
Before writing files to your hard disk, the install program
checks to see if a file with the same name already exists. If
there is another file with the same name, a message is
displayed giving the file name and the date and time of both
files. In general, if the file to be written is newer than the
file already on your hard disk, you should install the newer
file.
The Install program creates a program group named "OWL Business
Apps" with icons for Basic Bookkeeping for Windows (BBK -WIN),
the Basic Bookkeeping User's Guide (BBK - User's Guide), the
Basic Bookkeeping Order Form (BBK - Order Form) and Basic
Bookkeeping README (BBK - README).
