  2.                     New Information  HUBBLE 2.20
  3.  
  4. 1. NEWS, NEW FEATURES, BUG FIXES, AND USAGE NOTES
  5.  
  6.    NEWS:
  7.     There are two mode of processing in HUBBLE, [Image Based Processing] 
  8.     and [Document Based Processing]. 
  9.     Currently, the [Image Based Processing] support are much more extensive. 
  10.     Suggestion for more [Document Based Processing] support can be sent
  11.     directly to author via e-mail to Compuserve ID 75561,3647
  12.     There will be some reorganization of the program and user interface for
  13.     the next release of HUBBLE in the next few months after this release.
  14.     Registered users will get a free upgrade. Furthermore, to avoid problems
  15.     which users may discover problems or bugs in the software before the next
  16.     version is available, registered users are eligible for two bug fix 
  17.     requests, which will be mailed to the users as soon as the bug is fixed.

  20.    A.
  21.       A.1 SIZE LIMITATION LIFTED
  22.       Previous size limitation for TOOLBOX:(Area Fill and Image Patching)
  23.       has been lifted. Now, HUBBLE can handle large area fill and image 
  24.       patching. An item in "edit Menu" ('Big Area Fill') is include as a 
  25.       fallback measure to revert to previous area fill behavior. This item 
  26.       will be deleted in the future. There is also a limit of a few hundred 
  27.       of holes inside the area to be filled. Most bugs are fixed.
  28.       However, some limitation in TOOLBOX:(Image Patching) operation still
  29.       exist for 'resized' patching, see KNOWN PROBLEMS OR LIMITATION below.

  31.       A.2 EXPORT OF AREA FILL BITMAP TEMPLATE
  32.       For TOOLBOX:(Area Fill), users can now export the filled area as template
  33.       bitmap by clicking on <Export> button (on status line). Other image 
  34.       windows can then import these template bitmap. Furthermore, 
  35.       users can change the color and other attribute of the bitmap, move 
  36.       and/or resize. Then users can either click <OK> to commit the imported
  37.       bitmap as part of the new image.
  38.  
  39.    B. One added feature in HUBBLE 2.20 is to provide a way for users to keep
  40.       track of which files are open.
  41.       - From main menu, users can choose how the image name associated with 
  42.         window is displayed. (How the pathname is displayed, View Menu)
  43.       - From the <Reduced Image> window's "System Menu" (Click on the 
  44.         upper-left corner of <Reduced Image> window), users can now how
  45.         a choice of displaying which image that particular reduced image
  46.         associated with. Also, how the image name is displayed.
  47.  
  48.    C. Printing Document and TOOLBOX:(Text Input)
  49.       Some problems about printing in document based processing in some 
  50.       instances. Change the resolution of document and try again. HUBBLE may
  51.       not be able to handle if the resolution is set too high. Too low a 
  52.       resolution give a poor printing result. 
  53.       As for TOOLBOX:(Text Input), There are a few occasion (but very rarely)
  54.       that got wrong result. If this happen, try again using different fonts.
  55.       All registered users will receive an upgrade after these problems are 
  56.       fixed, even before the next release is available. See register.frm for 
  57.       upgrade and bug fix policy for this version of HUBBLE.
  58.

  60.    D. Bugs fix
  61.       D.1 Bug fixes for version 2.20
  62.           - size limitation for various toolsbox.
  63.           - interactive equalization, tone and color adjustment problem.
  64.             With the above two image processing tools, users can easily
  65.             customize the color and/or color distribution of the image
  66.             by dragging on the histogram on the dialog box. However, in
  67.             previous version, if you click on the histogram in a very 
  68.             quick succession (which users shouldn't do), HUBBLE may crash.
  69.             version 2.20 fixed this problem.
  70.  
  71.       D.2 Bug fix for scaling problem, etc.
  72.           Version 2.00 fix bugs for scaling and some image 
  73.           transformation problems which cause HUBBLE to crash when 
  74.           processing some images of some particular dimension 
  75.           (specifically some image height). Also, if users check on 
  76.           the "Use Floating Point" in profile setting from the option 
  77.           menu, the calculation will be more accurate. However, the 
  78.           scaling operation may become slower, especially for system 
  79.           systems which don't have math co-processor built-in or 
  80.           installed.
  81.       D.3 Bug fix for Custom text tool
  82.           In previous version, if users, after add custom text to the 
  83.           image, use <Back-space> key to delete text and enter the key
  84.           stroke repeatedly too fast, HUBBLE may crash. version 2.10
  85.           fix this bug. (fixed in version 2.10)
  86.       D.4 Bug fix for 24-bits image processing.
  87.           24-bits image uses considerable amount of memory. HUBBLE also
  88.           create another dithered version for every 24-bits images. It
  89.           slow down the process a little bit.
  90.           When merging two 24-bits (true color) images, especially 
  91.           horizontally (merge left-right, which increase the width) may 
  92.           make the resulting image too big, HUBBLE may crash. 
  93.           Version 2.10 alleviate the problem and allow HUBBLE to handle
  94.           much bigger bitmap.
  95.       D.5 Bug fix for "ACQUIRE" image from scanner (TWAIN compatible)
  96.           version 2.11 fixed two problems
  97.           - HUBBLE crash when scanning large 24-bits true color image.
  98.           - Displaying large scanned image directly from scanner.
  99.             (using TWAIN standard, i.e. "ACQUIRE" from the file menu)
  100.  
  101.    E. Features added since version 2.10
  102.  
  103.       E.1 Better windows management for version 2.10.
  104.       E.2 Users can now save the configuration and options.
  105.           So that HUBBLE can initialize previous setting such
  106.           as window position when HUBBLE is invoked again.
  107.  
  108.    F. Features added since version 2.20
  109.       F.1 Keep track of most recently opened file.
  110.       F.2 Can export filled area as template bitmap to other image.
  111.       F.3 Choice of how file name is displayed both for image windows 
  112.           and reduces image.
  113.       F.4 Many bug fixes.

  115. 2. Navigating through [ Document Based Processing ] Mode
  116.    2.1 After users select a specific tools other than text input and
  117.           editing operation, press [Esc] or [Return] (<Enter> key) to 
  118.           end the operation.
  119.    2.2 Not only does HUBBLE provide two major mode of operation, 
  120.           i.e. [Image Based Processing] and [Document Based Processing].
  121.           Within [Document Based Processing] mode, users can also add
  122.           various drawings, images, and custom text as well as normal
  123.           paragraph text input to a document page. Since these added
  124.           items can be place anywhere within a defined document page,
  125.           and can be located by clicking mouse button and scroll bar,
  126.           a document page may be scrolled to the extent that all input
  127.           paragraph texts are invisible. So, there may be occasions
  128.           that location which users can input paragraph text 
  129.           (a blinking caret) is outside the visible document window.
  130.           In this case, users have to scroll the document to bring
  131.           to view portion of document to input text, or use the cursor
  132.           keys to move the blinking caret.
  133.           (HUBBLE automatically move the current cursor position when
  134.           users scroll the document page vertically, if it's possible
  135.           to do so)
  136.  
  137. 3. SOME LIMITATION FOR THIS VERSION OF HUBBLE
  138.  
  139.    ** These limitation will be lifted in the upcoming version **
  140.  
  141.    A. Toolbox's size limitation has been mostly lifted.
  142.  
  143.    B. Capture to Clipboard
  144.       Capture to Clipboard is currently disabled.
  145.       Users should use "Capture to Window" and the "Copy to Clipboard",
  146.       both are from "Edit menu"
  147.  
  148.    C. MERGE TWO images directly from scanner input
  149.       If there is difficulty of merging two scanned images obtained
  150.       from "Acquire" command, save these images in bitmap first.
  151.       Then, close these windows and re-open these newly saved files
  152.       using "Open Files" command from "File Menu".
  153.  
  154. 4. KNOWN PROBLEMS OR LIMITATION
  155.  
  156.    A. When displaying a 24-bits true color image, there can be two
  157.       versions to be displayed. By default, If the display adapter
  158.       is not capable of displaying true color, the ditherred version
  159.       (can be turn on and off from "Option Menu") will be displayed.
  160.       However, in some instances, when displaying a ditherred version, 
  161.       some tiny stray image may be visible at some edge, this will not 
  162.       effect the correctness of the image's subsequent operation.
  163.    
  164.    B. TOOLBOX:(Image Patching) 
  165.       B.1 Resize and Display Adapter.
  166.           - During the process of moving the selected area to patch on 
  167.             other part of the image, The superimposed area may be shown
  168.             as black and white on True color and high color display adapter.
  169.             This will not effect the final result. After the users click on 
  170.             <WRT> or <OK> to commit the operation, the correct color will
  171.             be displayed.
  172.           - Although users can also resize the selected area to patch on
  173.             other part of the image, however, by default, resize is disabled.
  174.             The reason is the this operation will give correct result only
  175.             on True color and high color display adapter. Users with the
  176.             above mention adapter driver can enable these operation by
  177.             click on appropriate item on "Display Option" dialog box.
  178.             ("Moved Area Resizeable Check Box" From "Option Menu")
  179.    C. If users encounter any problem, please complete the form from the
  180.       file "PROBLEMS.FRM" and send it to HUBBLE SOFTWARE COMPANY.
  181.  
  182. 5. NOTES ON DISPLAY OPTIONS (from Option Menu)
  183.  
  184.    A. Edit Color Correction (rarely needed)
  185.       When editing the image, if there is any distortion in shape or
  186.       or color after writing changes to the image, users may have to 
  187.       change setting for this option.
  188.       
  189.       In general, convert to 8-bits (256-colors) image is suggested for 
  190.       some image editing operations, because of speed and ease of processing.
  191.  
  192.    B. Moved Area Resizeable Check Box. --> TOOLBOX:(Image Patching).
  193.       This checkbox control the operation of TOOLBOX:(Image Patching).
  194.       Some display driver may have produced distorted colors if the 
  195.       moved shape is resized. Currently, resizing only work well for
  196.       true color (24-bits) image on true color or hi-color display
  197.       adapter. (hi-color of either 32K or 64K colors display adapter).
  198.  
  199.    C. 24-bits Display Correction Check Box. (rarely needed)
  200.       Check this box if you have problem when trying to display 
  201.       un-ditherred version of a true color image on a non true color
  202.       or palette base display adapter.
  203.  
  204.    D. Auto Ditherred Image Update. (rarely needed)
  205.       Since there are two versions of image which are created for 24-bits
  206.       true color images. These two versions will be updated independently.
  207.       If this box is checked, a ditherred version of the image will be 
  208.       re-created from the modified (24-bits) true color image.
  209.       
  210. 6. MISSING FEATURES IN THIS VERSION
  211.  
  212.       Features that are still not implemented in version 2.20 are:
  213.  
  214.       1. Image scaling that preserve aspect ratio is still not implemented.
  215.       2. pattern selection.
  216.       3. In SAVE option, some compression method are not currently supported:
  217.          - compression for BMP format.
  218.          - CCITT compression for TIFF format. 
  219.            (image will be saved as no compression)
  220.       4. Some specialized contrast control.
  221.       5. Postscript support.
  222.  
  223.       These features will be implemented in latter version.
  224.  
  225.  
  226. 7. NOTES ON OS/2
  227.  
  228.    A. Printing
  229.       Users of version 2.x may have to use control panel to setup
  230.       for printer type and port used. These can be done either from 
  231.       program manager or run Win-Os2 in full screen.
  232.  
  233.    B. Image Acquisition
  234.  
  235.       Some scanner driver may not function properly under OS/2. If this is
  236.       the case, contact your scanner manufacturer for model and/or driver
  237.       which can be used under OS/2. 
  238.  
  239.       In this case, users may use image acquisition software which bundled
  240.       with that scanner on its specified environment, and use HUBBLE for
  241.       further editing and processing.
  242.  
  243.       Users can still test functioning of TWAIN driver using the TWAIN Sample Driver
  244.       included (DCD.DS). Simply create TWAIN directory on Windows's subdirectory. For
  245.       OS/2 2.x, it is C:\OS2\MDOS\WINOS2, (MD TWAIN, CD C:\OS2\MDOS\WINOS2\TWAIN).
  246.       From file menu, use [Select Source] command, then [Acquire] input.
  247.       (See README.DOC for more detail).
  248.  
  249.    C. Capture to Window
  250.  
  251.       C.1 If running HUBBLE under OS/2
  252.           == Set HUBBLE window to "minimize to desktop", Locate      ==
  253.           == the minimized HUBBLE to the top-left of area to capture ==
  254.           == Restore HUBBLE window, select "capture" command          ==
  255.           == Minimize HUBBLE, then begin the capture process         ==
  256.           Users can begin drag mouse and capture only on Windows application.
  257.           To capture other part of the OS/2 desktop, users should place
  258.           a dummy Windows application above and to the left of the area 
  259.           intended to be captured (even as minimized icon -- users may
  260.           have to change the setting so that this dummy application is
  261.           minimized to the OS/2 desktop instead of minimized windows), 
  262.           then begin drag mouse from this Windows. After the capturing 
  263.           operation is completed, users can then trim the image by
  264.           B.1.1 Trim Image command from the edit menu.
  265.           B.1.2 Use TOOLBOX:(RECTANGLE) to copy only the intended area.
  266.       C.2 Many instances of HUBBLE may be running concurrently. So, another
  267.           instance of HUBBLE may be fired up and "minimize ON DESKTOP" to
  268.           serve this purpose.
  269.  
  270. 8. HUBBLE creates many temporary files whiles the program is running.
  271.    If the program is aborted abnormally or unexpectedly, these temporary
  272.    files may be left in the hubble directory, use DELTEMP.BAT to clean up
  273.    these files. Alternatively, users can use the following commands to 
  274.    clean up temporary files.
  275.
