  1. \Terse{} is an amazingly powerful full-screen
  2.     editor running on all IBM-PC compatible computers under
  3.     the MS-DOS operating system.
  4. \Terse{} is a very tiny editor. 
  5. The entire program occupies only 4096 bytes of disk space.
  6. No hacker's disk is complete
  7. without it.  No disk, be it hard or floppy, is too full to include it.
  8.  
  9. A conscious effort was made to reduce the program size
  10.     to an absolute minimum.
  11. The code was written in 8086 assembly using a style that
  12.     breaks many of the rules of structure programming.
  13. This space economy does not come on expense of features or 
  14.     of power.
  15. Full screen mode-less editing is offered to the user
  16.     with the usual cursor movements, insertion, overwriting and
  17.     deletion of text and prime editing operations:
  18.     search and search and replace, 
  19.     cut, copy and paste. 
  20. In addition, \Terse{} provides advanced features 
  21.     including unlimited line length and horizontal scrolling, 
  22.     help screen and status line, 
  23.     configurable key bindings and variable tab setting,
  24.     support for many screen types, editing of binary and 
  25.     UNIX and MS-DOS style text files and more.
  26. \Terse{} default command keys binding 
  27.     are very similar to those of the famous
  28.     {\em brief}\/ editor (by UnderWare Inc.).

  30. \Terse{} main weakness is that it is restricted to editing
  31.     one file viewed from one window at at time.
  32. This deficiency can be circumvented by using a multi-tasking windowing
  33.     environment such as DESQview.
  34. Indeed, one may argue that it is the responsibility of such an 
  35.     external shell to furnish a good and consistent windowing and 
  36.     multi-file operation support.
  37. An editor should then concentrate on carrying out a 
  38.     a coherent duty of file editing.

  40. Yet another deficiency \Terse{} is that it is limits file size
  41.     to 65,536 bytes. This limitation follows from the segmented
  42.     architecture of the 8086, its restricted address space
  43.     and the lack of virtual memory or any other sophisticated 
  44.     memory management in the MS-DOS operating system.

  46. Despite the numerous dirty assembly tricks employed in the 
  47.     implementation, \Terse{} code is compatible, 
  48.     re-usable and extendable.
  49. \Terse{} works flawlessly on all MS-DOS/PC-DOS versions greater
  50.     or equal to 2, and all MS-DOS clones and replacements
  51.     known to the author including Windows DOS shell, 
  52.     4DOS, DR-DOS, DESQview and OS/2 DOS compatibility box.
  53. In addition there exists a version of \Terse{} for the
  54.     HP95lx palmtop.
  55. This version is especially adapted to some of this computer 
  56.     size limitations.

  58. An extended (in the 5KB range) version of \Terse{} 
  59.     called \Slim{} has even more editing functions.
  60. One particularly interesting function allows the user
  61.     to apply an arbitrary external filter to a text block.
  62. A scaled down (in the 3KB range) version of \Terse{} 
  63. \Lean{} is basically \Terse{} without the
  64. editing code.  Naturally, \Lean{} could never compete with the
  65. excellent LIST utility of Vernon D. Buerg, and other
  66. fine tiny file-listers. However so, \Lean{} contributes to the
  67. purpose of demonstrating the reusability of the editor code.

  69. The editor display engine was modified in
  70.     \Zair{} which is a bidirectional version of \Slim{} 
  71.     intended for entering mixed 
  72.     right-to-left and left-to-right text such as input for \TeXXeT.

  75. \Terse{} is free (but copyrighted) to private users.  If you are a private
  76. user who uses \Terse{} ``for pleasure", you are not required to register.
  77. However, if you use \Terse{} for any commercial application, i.e., in
  78. your company, at work, etc., or make money from selling software or
  79. distributing shareware, you are {\em required} to register your copy of \Terse.
  80. Registration cost is only \$15 and buys you a personalized version, and
  81. grant your institution a site license.  
  82. For an additional payment of only \$5, you will receive the source 
  83.     code of \Terse.

  86. \Terse{} and \Slim{} are written in highly optimized assembly language.
  87. The code is probably the worst spaghetti you have ever seen!  This
  88. means that the risk of \Terse{} and \Slim{} having bugs is especially
  89. high.  The author exterminated all the bugs he identified, and he
  90. did his very best to test the program thoroughly.  However, there
  91. might still be other unidentified bugs lurking there.  These bugs
  92. by nature are unpredictable.  Usage of the program acknowledges the
  93. following disclaimer of warranty: ``This program is supplied as is!"
