Introduction
ZoomText and ZoomText Plus are screen magnification programs for IBM
and compatible personal computers that are specifically tailored for
the needs of the visually impaired. ZoomText works with most
character-based software including word processors, data bases,
spreadsheets, and communication programs. ZoomText Plus adds graphics
magnification and a font editor.
As TSR (terminate and stay resident) programs, ZoomText and ZoomText
Plus reside in your computer's memory and work in the background with
any application program you are running. ZoomText and ZoomText Plus
are simple to install and require no additional hardware.
┌───┐ │ This manual provides explanations and instructions for both ZoomText
│ZT+│ │ and ZoomText Plus. All references to ZoomText apply to both programs.
└───┘ │ Any instructions or features specific to ZoomText Plus are marked like
│ this paragraph. Subsequent paragraphs which apply to ZoomText Plus
│ have a vertical line in the left margin.
Terminology
Normal Screen
Normal screen refers to your application program screen as it
appears with no magnification.
Zoom Window
The zoom window is the portion of your display screen which
contains the magnified part of your normal screen. The zoom
window overlays all or part of your normal screen.
Viewport
ZoomText displays a portion of your normal screen in a zoom window
at a specified magnification level. The viewport is the portion
of the normal screen that is displayed in the zoom window. If you
were using a magnifying glass on a page of a book, the viewport
would be the part of the page encompassed by the magnifying glass.
Scroll
Scrolling the zoom window changes its contents by moving the
viewport. The position of the zoom window remains unchanged.
Move
Moving the zoom window changes its position in relation to the
normal screen. In Line and Glass zoom modes, moving the zoom
window changes its contents. In Area zoom mode, the contents of
the zoom window remain unchanged.

■ Track on your cursor, mouse or menu bar movement in your
application program
■ Review the contents of the screen by scrolling smoothly in any
direction at definable speeds
■ Select the colors of your text and background independently for
your normal screen and zoom window
■ Wrap continuous lines of text within the zoom window
■ Exclude fonts when loading ZoomText to save memory
■ Run ZoomText in 640x480 resolution on VGA systems for a clearer
and crisper display
┌───┐ │ ZoomText Plus offers additional features which let you:

Using ZoomText
ZoomText offers many options for you to configure your screen display.
There are three ways to use these options:
■ Pop-Up Menus
■ Quick-Key Commands
■ Command Line Parameters
Pop-Up Menus
ZoomText is a multi-level, menu-driven program. A quick-key sequence
pops up the ZoomText Menu on top of your current application program.
This main menu lists the categories of ZoomText options. When you
choose a category, another menu appears with all the possible options
for that category. Some of these menu options may access other menus
with more options. When you exit the pop-up menus, your normal screen
is configured using the options you selected.
Quick-Key Commands
Quick-key commands make changes to the ZoomText options without
accessing the pop-up menus. The default quick-key commands are
included with each function described on the following pages. See
"Appendix D: Quick-Key Commands" for a summary of all the default key
commands and their functions.
To use the quick-keys, hold down the [Alt] key while pressing the
second key.
You can change the default quick-keys by creating a keyboard
configuration file. See "Keyboard Configuration" for information on
creating and loading a keyboard configuration file.
Command Line Parameters
ZoomText can be configured automatically from the DOS command line by
using command line parameters. You can create different batch files
with configurations for various application programs. Command line
parameters can be executed when ZoomText is first loaded or at any
time while it is resident in memory. See "Command Line Parameters"
for more information.
The /S parameter lets you save the current settings of all ZoomText
options to a named file that can be loaded at a later time with the /L
parameter. This lets you save and load configurations that have been
set by pop-up menu selections.
You can modify your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to load ZoomText when you turn
on your computer. By including command line parameters, ZoomText will
load automatically with your desired configuration.

Turning ZoomText On/Off
When you load ZoomText into your computer's memory, it is turned on
automatically. You can turn it off and back on again at any time from
any application program by using the following quick-keys. Any
options you selected for ZoomText remain in effect when you turn it
back on.
┌────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐

└────────────────────┴───────────────────────────────────────────────┘
Video Modes
Application programs often use different video modes such as text mode
and graphics mode. When your application program switches to a text
mode that is not supported or to a graphics mode, ZoomText
automatically turns itself off. When your application program
switches back to a supported video mode, ZoomText automatically turns
itself back on with your ZoomText options remaining unchanged.
┌───┐ │ ZoomText Plus works in graphics mode in Full zoom at 2x, 4x, 6x or 8x
│ZT+│ │ magnifications only. When your application program switches to a
└───┘ │ supported graphics mode, ZoomText Plus switches to Full zoom at the
│ magnification level closest to the one currently selected. When your
│ application program switches back to a supported text mode, ZoomText
│ Plus restores the original zoom mode and magnification level.
See "Appendix B: Video Modes" for a complete list of supported video
modes.
ZoomText Demo Program
The ZoomText demo program has all the features of the full working
product. This allows you to run the demo with whatever application
software you might want to magnify.

Pop-Up Menu Conventions
ZoomText pop-up menus consist of one or more lists of options. Some
options are not available for use with every configuration. Any
unavailable options are grayed out. For example, the odd numbered
magnification levels are not available in Quick zoom mode and are
grayed out when you access the Magnification Menu.
Use the following quick-key to access the ZoomText pop-up menus.

The Window Menu sets the zoom window control mode and the zoom window
attributes. It consists of two lists.
■ The first four items are the window control mode options. This
single selection list lets you change the content, location, or size
of the window, or lets you see and relocate the viewport in relation
to the normal screen. When you activate a window control mode, the
zoom window appears with blinking icons indicating the active mode.
■ The last three items are the window attributes options. This
multiple selection list lets you have a frame around your zoom
window, see the viewport, and/or wrap lines of text within the zoom
window.

Window Scrolling Using Quick-Keys
The window quick-keys let you move the viewport to magnify different
parts of your normal screen without entering the ZoomText Menu. The
viewport stays where you place it until tracking resumes when you
return to your work in your application program. (See "Track Menu".)
In Glass zoom mode, the window quick-keys move the zoom window along
with the viewport. The zoom window magnifies the portion of the
normal screen directly below it. In Line zoom mode, since there is
only one line in the zoom window, horizontal scrolling quick-keys
scroll the contents of the zoom window. Vertical scrolling quick-keys
move the zoom window along with the viewport.
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
20
To see how the viewport moves when you use the quick-keys, work in
Area zoom mode with the Port window attribute option turned on and
complete the following steps.
■ To magnify the text in the bottom left corner of your normal screen:
1) Press [Alt] [PgDn].
The viewport moves to the bottom of your normal screen
(when the Jump setting is Margin).
2) Press [Alt] [Home].
The viewport moves to the left edge of your normal screen
(when the Jump setting is Margin).
■ To magnify text above the current position of the viewport:
Press [Alt] [].
The viewport moves up one line.
■ To magnify text below the current position of the viewport:
Press [Alt] [].
The viewport moves down one line.

The Review Menu controls ZoomText's screen reviewing feature. During
review mode, the viewport moves automatically across the normal screen
and displays its contents in the zoom window. You can define the
direction of this scrolling, what happens when the viewport reaches
the end of the normal screen, and the scrolling speed. The Review
mode always begins scrolling from the current position of your
viewport.
In Full zoom and Quick zoom modes, the zoom window scrolls smoothly
when reviewing your normal screen. Because the other zoom modes
scroll one character at a time, scrolling is not as smooth.
ZoomText's ability to scroll smoothly at higher speeds depends on the
speed of your computer hardware. If you experience jerky scrolling in
Full zoom or Quick zoom modes, decrease the Review mode speed. (See
"Speed Menu".)
The Begin option on the Review Menu activates the Review mode. The
other three options pop up submenus.

The Bounds Menu lets you define the portion of your normal screen you
want included or excluded for tracking. This feature gives you more
control of tracking when working with some application programs.
For example, some word processing programs move the cursor to the
position indicator each time you move the cursor. In a normal screen,
this movement happens too quickly for you to see. However, when
ZoomText tracks on the cursor, it follows this movement and magnifies
the position indicator between each of your key strokes. To eliminate
this problem, you can set the bounds of your screen to exclude the
position indicator line. When the cursor enters the excluded portion
of your screen, ZoomText will not follow the movement.
The Bounds Menu consists of two, single selection lists.
■ The first three options determine the bounds type, i.e.,
whether tracking occurs throughout the entire screen or inside or
outside of the bounds area.
■ The last two options are the bounds control modes which
let you control the size and position of the bounds area.

The MapColor Menu lets you select a new display color for any color in
your zoom window (if you selected Zoom) or your normal screen display
(if you selected Unzoom). Each number (0-15) represents one of 16
possible colors. (See "Appendix A: Color Chart".) For example, if
you have difficulty seeing the color red, you can map the color red to
a readable color, such as blue. Any occurance of the color red in
your zoom window or normal screen displays as blue.
The bottom portion of the menu displays the colors you select for
mapping. The top color bar represents the original color. The bottom
color bar represents the "mapped-to" color for the original color.
For the default setting, each color is mapped to itself.

Command Line Parameters
You can configure ZoomText automatically when you load it from the DOS
command line by using command line parameters. These parameters can be
executed when you first load ZoomText (load-time) or when you reload
(re-execute) ZoomText after it is resident in memory. Re-execution
executes command line parameters without loading another copy of
ZoomText into memory.
There are three guidelines for using command line parameters:
■ Multiple commands can be executed on a single command line.
■ Default settings are used at load-time when a command is not
specified on the command line.
■ The current settings are used during re-execution when a command
is not specified on the command line.
■ To use command line parameters:
1) Change directories to the drive and path that ZoomText resides in.
2) Type
ZOOMTEXT (space) [all desired commands]
3) Press [Enter].
ZoomText loads (or re-executes) with your specified settings.
The following pages list the possible command line parameters.
Default settings are marked with an *.

Accelerator
The display accelerator uses a 2K to 64K buffer as a font cache.
Magnified characters are built in the buffer and then drawn on the
screen. If a particular character already exists in the buffer, it
is drawn on the screen without being rebuilt. This speeds up the
display output.

Keyboard Configuration
The ZoomText program disk contains two files regarding quick-key
keyboard configuration:
■ ZOOMKEYS.DOC - Provides quick-key configuration instructions.
■ ZOOMKEYS.DAT - Lists default quick-key settings.
You can modify the ZOOMKEYS.DAT file or create a new configuration
file to change the default quick-keys used by ZoomText.
Use the following guidelines when modifying or creating a keyboard
configuration file.
■ Lines that begin with a ; (comment lines) and blank lines are
ignored by ZoomText.
■ Use a separate line for each quick-key command.
■ Use (space) = (space) to separate a quick-key command from its key
combination.
■ Each quick-key must consist of one or more Shift Keys followed by
a single key from one of the Secondary Key groups. Use a space to
separate each key. See "Key Groups".
■ Each quick-key must be a unique key combination.
■ You may use either upper or lower case when typing the quick-key
commands and key combinations.
■ ZoomText uses the default values for unspecified quick-keys.
■ You may save the modified configuration file under a new name.
You may have multiple configuration files.
Loading a Keyboard Configuration File
■ To use the new keyboard configuration file:
Load (or re-execute) ZoomText using the /K command line parameter
followed by the name of the configuration file. See "Command Line
Parameters".
Example: ZoomText /K newkeys.dat
