INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING XL-2000.EXE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
IMPORTANT: Be sure to run RUNME.BAT. Type RUNME and press the "Enter" key.
A. Using your favorite word processor or text editor, load one of the files
which has the extension DET. This package includes JOUR.DET, COMP.DET,
NEWS.DET, HOTNEWS.DET, BIGIDEA.DET, MOVABLE.DET, COVER.DET, MYBOOK.DET,
SPCIAL.DET and SPECIAL2.DET. To avoid losing the original text, you may copy
either of the DEB/DET pairs, creating a pair with a new name. Example: Type
COPY COMP.DE? MYFILE.DE? <Enter>, to create these new files: MYFILE.DEB
and MYFILE.DET.
B. Follow the directions of your word processor or text editor and set your
line length to 78. This is the same as a "word wrap" of 79, a term used by some
text editors. If you do not use the proper line length, you will either lose
words past the right margin, or you will leave a wide space to the right of
your paragraphs. (Use line length of 76 if you are using BIGIDEA.DET.)
C. Notice the numbers which appear on the first (topmost) line. This is the
DET code, and, it must not be disturbed unless you are changing the display of
page numbers, as explained below. Begin your text on the next line.
D. Delete all text which appear beneath the DET code, since you will want to
start with an "empty" file and type your own text. Then, beginning on the line
below the DET code, type your text. As an alternative, you may import (load
in) an existing text file, if you have one. It must be an ASCII file (DOS text
file).
E. Save your file with an ASCII save (DOS text save). Do not save with the
default save of a word processing program, unless it happens to be an ASCII
save (see your word processing manual if you are not sure).
F. Make a batch file, which is a text file having the extension BAT, and give
it a name, such as RUN.BAT. See RUNME.BAT or follow this example:
echo off
hqsw
XL-2000 MYFILE
ega
vga
G. Run RUN.BAT by typing RUN <Enter> and see your electronic document dis-
played on your monitor screen.
USING PAGE NUMBERS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As you know from viewing the files in this package, JOUR.DET, COMP.DET and
HOTNEWS.DET do not display page numbers, while NEWS.DET and MYBOOK.DET do. If
the first number in the DET code of JOUR.DET or COMP.DET is changed from 17 to
16, page numbers will automaticaly be displayed. Change the first No. in the
code of HOTNEWS.DET to 18 for page numbers. If the first number of NEWS.DET's
code is changed from 17 to 18, no page numbers will appear. Be very careful in
changing this code. You must not alter anything except the first number, or
you may ruin your display; the program reads the DET code to set up the display
parameters. Change 24 to 25 for MYBOOK.DET to eliminate page numbering.

ADDING COLORS TO TEXT
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When you register XL-2001.EXE you will receive full instructions and everything
you need to add colors to your text. Even before you get your registered copy,
however, you may work with colors. Load one of the multicolored DET files into
a text editor or word processor. These files, each of which has the extension
"DET" are COMP, MOVABLE, COVER, MYBOOK, BIGIDEA, SPECIAL and SPECIAL2. You
will see codes for colors scattered throughout the text. You may block-move
these codes to different parts of the file, or to a new text file, or delete
the current text and type your own, to experiment with colors.
USING FANCY TEXT FONTS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Run HWSW2.COM and the Art Deco font will temporarily become your computer's
font. If you then run a program which resets the video mode, Art Deco will
disappear. HQSW3.COM will load the Old English font for you. Take a look at
RUNME.BAT by typing it to your screen (type TYPE RUNME.BAT) or printing it
(type COPY RUNME.BAT PRN). You will see how we used these font-changing
programs in the batch file. Notice that we ended the batch file with EGA.COM
followed by VGA.COM, two small programs (included here) which reset your video
mode to its default font. If you always include both EGA.COM and VGA.COM in
that order at the end of your batch file, you may be sure that any computer
system, whether EGA, VGA or SVGA, will be properly reset after your e-publi-
cation has been viewed.
PROBLEMS?
~~~~~~~~~
If it does not work 100%, go over this check list:
1. The top line must contain the proper DET code and nothing else.
2. The correct DEB/DET pair of files must be present.
3. The text must be formatted with a line length of 78, or 76 for BIGIDEA.DET.
If you use a greater line length, words near the right margin will be lost.
(When you obtain your registered copy you will find some DET codes which
require different line lengths)
4. The video monitor must be EGA, VGA or Super VGA. Sorry, but with a
CGA monitor the display will blink.
5. All files listed in your batch file must be present, including XL-2000.EXE
or XL-2001.EXE, EGA.COM, VGA.COM, and the correct DEB/DET files.
6. The computer must be fully IBM compatible and using MS-DOS or PC-DOS.
Remember: a. Type COPY DOC.TXT PRN <Enter> to print the above directions
b. Type COPY REGISTER.TXT PRN <Enter> to print a registration form.
