1. INSTALLATION NOTES
─────────────────────
All of the files contained within the archive you received (either
an EXE, ARJ, or ZIP file) must be placed within a single directory.
Your data files may reside in any directory or on any disk drive. See
the "List of files" section below for files which may be removed if
disk space is limited.
Installing on Floppy Disk
─────────────────────────
WML can be run from a 720k (or greater) floppy disk although it will
access data and operate very slowly. When using floppy disks, it is a
wise idea to have an archival copy (a "master") apart from the one you
use daily (the "working" copy). Use the DISKCOPY command to make a
working copy of a floppy disk, if necessary.
Documentation Files
───────────────────
If you have WordPerfect 5, just load WML.WP. Instructions to reformat
and print are in a comment at the top of the file. If you don't have
WordPerfect or a way to convert the WML.WP file to your word processor,
then just "TYPE WML.TXT > PRN" at the DOS prompt. WML.TXT is an ASCII
file generated from WordPerfect for a "standard printer" and this command
will send it to the printer on port LPT1:. You can substitute the "PRN"
with "LPTx:" where the "x" is 1, 2, or 3.
2. NEW FEATURES
───────────────
11/10/94 ── 2.5 Official release of new version!
Updated ASCII import to allow either CR or LF to signal
the end of a record, to allow international characters,
and to allow quotes & commas within quotation-bounded
fields.
First release with working WordPerfect import.
10/25/94 ── 2.4y Fixed problem with reading older CONFIG files (prior to
(beta test version 2.3 or so).
version) Added support for HP LaserJet 4+
Removed Unregistered opening delay & reduced exit delay
Added bar code printing for dot matrix printers
Added label content definitions on Preferences/Continuous
Labels screen
Improved dot matrix labels printing to allow line spacing to
be adjusted if number of lines will not fit on labels at
standard LPI setting. Some printers use 1/180" spacing,
others use 1/216" spacing; if the spacing is wrong on your
printer I'd really appreciate knowing about it!
Fixed laser labels line spacing problem
Fixed problems with bar code printing on laser labels
Enhanced group file usage to allow for a group file to be
used if in the current directory, otherwise the WML.EXE
directory is used
When changing a file's name and/or description, the old
description was not displaying. Fixed.
Fixed cursor key usage on last mailing date fields.
10/13/94 ── 2.4x Fixed minor problem with international postal codes and
zip codes which are not in the Smart Zip file.
Improved handling mixed international & domestic entries
10/12/94 ── 2.4w Fixed problem with opening files when only one file is
present.
Fixed problems with SHARE (networks) on the Preferences
Printers screen (caused error 70 - permission denied).
Changed Phone Book to follow the selected index sequence
rather than always printing in personal name order
10/06/94 ── 2.4v ASCII import now accepts TAB character (ASCII 8) to signal
end of record when importing some U.S. State agency files
09/29/94 ── 2.4u Corrected problem with abbreviation checking which occurred
if spaces were entered at the end of a field
Corrected problem with laser labels not printing zip code
Corrected zip code look-up problem if WML started from
a directory other than where WML.EXE resides
09/15/94 ── 2.4t Corrected minor function key listing errors on Data Entry/
Names screen
Fixed problem with context-sensitive help topic look-up
Enhanced Address Duplicate Checking to only show duplicates
if they have the same address AND zip code
09/12/94 ── 2.4s Added logic to detect possible memory shortage problems
Improved mouse support on Backup/Restore/Format routines
09/07/94 ── 2.4r Checksum digit was being miscalculated. Also, I
misunderstood the Post Office guidelines for 11-digit
zips: they ONLY apply to bar codes. So WML will no
longer expand a 9-digit zip to 11-digits except for the
bar code. The correction character (the extra 10th or
12th digit) only applies to bar codes as well, so WML
will no longer print these except in bar codes.
Fixed an error with the CONFIG.WDT file which crept in
some time ago which caused WML to bomb.
08/27/94 ── 2.4p Fixed problem which created double index entries when
updating files to version 2.4o; this problem could also
be fixed by using File/Reindex option to index files a
second time or by re-opening the file again, in which
case WML would detect the problem and correct it. This
problem only applied to files which existed when user
upgraded to 2.4o
Fixed problem with SHARE.EXE ── this applies to networks
and most users of Windows. If you have been receiving
an error 70 (Permission Denied), this was due to the
DESCRIPT.ION file not being properly closed. Without
SHARE it didn't matter; with it, WML bombed. Also, the
DESCRIPT.ION file was being accessed exclusively (that
is, with full file locking); it is now shared so that
more than one task may access it simultaneously.
08/25/94 ── 2.4o Minor update to dup info window
Minor update to recall last record added to a file, if
that was the last operation performed on it
Minor update to use error tone defined on Pref/Other for
dup info window
Removed F3 function key being used on State field to list
state/province names; use F1 while on State field
Minor update to show "Group" highlighted as soon as groups
are defined for an entry, rather than only after saved
Corrected zip code error which sometimes caused a city to
be associated with the wrong zip code.
Removed abbreviation checking for City field - I think it
got in the way (e.g., "St" is more commonly "Street" than
it is "Saint")
Added F1/List function for City field
Corrected problem with Times-Used and First-Use calculations
Added zip code to address index so that the same address
or box number in different post offices will no longer
generate a duplicate address warning
Corrected problem with entering extended characters using
Alt + numeric-keypad
Corrected problem with abbreviations which could expand the
string beyond the size of the field; now if there is not
enough room the abbreviation is not expanded
08/23/94 ── 2.4n Fixed problem when doing automatic 11-digit zip code
calculation for an entry with a 9-digit zip (WML would
crash if either address line contained a single word)
Added message after first sheet of laser labels is printed
Updated laser label sheet margins: WML now applies the top
margin you provide for the top & bottom margins, rather
than assuming the printer has half-inch margins.
PCL 5 scalable fonts were not being properly accessed,
resulting in 12 points always being used
Updated laser labels: 11-digit zip bar codes did not fit on
3-across label sheets; so if the labels are defined as
3-across (or more) only 5- or 9-digit zips are used for
the bar code.
Updated & expanded on-line help descriptions & topics.
Corrected problems with duplicate checking options.
08/18/94 ── 2.4m Added warning for insufficient working memory (RAM) which
could cause lock-ups
Problem fixed with specifying /M (monochrome) switch or
an alternative drive on command line
08/13/94 ── 2.4k When an existing record's personal name and company name
were erased the data record was being saved even though
this made the entry invalid and subsequently caused WML
to bomb. WML now prevents the record from being saved
and also will properly handle a bad record encountered
in a file.
08/10/94 ── 2.4j Mail dates were defaulting to blank rather than the date
contained in the field - fixed!
08/07/94 ── 2.4i Corrected minor problem handling phone numbers with "Canada
plus U.S.A." setting.
Added Country field (which can also be used for Puerto Rico
Uban District) which shows up only with "International"
setting
08/07/94 ── 2.4h File descriptions (long names) are now stored in standard
4DOS "DESCRIPT.ION" file, so if you have 4DOS you can
see file descriptions using the "DIR" command
Mouse support enhanced on File/Change screen
Fixed problem on File/Change screen: if file name was not
modified WML was trying to rename it anyway
Support added for HP LaserJet 4L and Canon BJ-10 & BJ-600
08/03/94 ── 2.4g Minor enhancement to mouse support
Updated laser labels to work without MAILCODE.SFP file
07/29/94 ── 2.4f Fixed problem with File/Delete not deleting index files
07/28/94 ── 2.4e Fixed minor date-entry problem on Names screen
07/27/94 ── 2.4d Zip code problems fixed which caused 2.4a/b/c to bomb at
start-up if ZipCodes.WDT file existed
07/24/94 ── 2.4c MAILCODE.SF? font files no longer needed for bar codes;
you can delete these files from your disk.
Mouse support expanded, most notably on Preferences screens
07/20/94 ── 2.4b Added ability to change 3rd phone number description
Fixed problem with Alt-key toggles
07/19/94 ── 2.4a Enhanced command line file/path specification; you can now
specify any valid drive, path, and/or file name
Fixed v2.4 bug with creating new files
07/19/94 ── 2.4 Added file "links" to What Vehicle History? software
Enhanced Smart Zip - now shows multiple cities in a
pop-up menu on Data Entry/Names screen
Was ending in green; now resets to white-on-black
Enhanced conversion process for old-version files (problem
with v2.1 file conversion fixed in the process)
Upcoming Features
─────────────────
I have a huge list of planned enhancements to WML. Suggestions from
users are very welcome & appreciated. Here are just a few of the
enhancement plans for WML:
■ Ability to prepare a disk to send to P.O. for zip code correction and
9-digit expansion. Although WML has a fixed-field ASCII export, it
does not yet meet U.S. Post Office requirements.
■ A "Number of copies" field under the "Selected to print" field, to be
saved with an entry's data.
■ Have a single "master return address" and then a seperate return
address for each file. If the file has a return address set, then
ask for choice; otherwise use master.
■ Internet address with telephone numbers
■ Ability to define an optional group file so that separate group
definitions can be associated with a list. This would make it easy
to sell a list with its associated groupings or to view a limited
number of groups for a given file.
■ Group report which shows number of entries in each group for a given
mailing list (skipping groups with zero entries).
