  3. OVERVIEW
  4.  
  5. Stiletto (v1.2) is intended for people who want a button-bar task switcher/launcher
  6. and clock/calendar which always stays at the same place on the desktop and
  7. which lets them use any mouse button to run a command.  Stiletto features:
  8.  
  9. - A small-footprint button bar launcher 
  10.     (e.g. fits over title bar of maximized window).
  11. - Use of any mouse button to launch tasks.
  12. - Drag and drop files to start commands*.
  13. - User-configurable task launch menu with submenus.
  14. - Attach launch menu to button bar, desktop, window title bar, or all three.
  15. - Direct access to program manager groups and their commands*.
  16. - Switch to or close any active task.
  17. - Make any active task or launch any command as "Always on top".
  18. - Clock and date display on any button.
  19. - Built-in commands for drag and drop file rename*, 
  20.     windows exit/restart, browsing and 
  21.     running files, moving the button bar, and others.
  22. - Support for file associations.
  23. - Alarms, regular chimes, and scheduled activation of commands.
  24. - Wallpaper display and switcher/randomizer.
  25. - Assignment of sound to application events.
  26. - Randomization and testing of system and application sounds.
  27. - Random noise making by playing sounds sporadically as specified*.
  28. - Flyover help to display the commands for any button*.

  30. Asterisked (*) features are new in version 1.2.

  32. Stiletto is not intended to replace Program Manager or another 
  33. Windows Shell that you are using, such as Norton Desktop for 
  34. Windows.  Instead, Stiletto is intended to provide quick, 
  35. minimal-mouse click access to your most used commands while taking 
  36. up little desktop space, and to provide features related to 
  37. start-up or time: time/date display, alarms, wallpaper/sound 
  38. changing.

  42. INSTALLATION
  43.  
  44. To install Stiletto, first UnZip stiletto.zip into its own directory.
  45. Then execute the program ssetup.exe which comes in the zip.  This
  46. program copies the 3d Control library to your Windows directory (if you
  47. do not already have it).

  49. After you are satisfied that Stiletto is working, you can delete
  50. stiletto.zip and ctl3dv2.bak.
  51.  
  52. To start Stiletto, execute stiletto.exe.  Stiletto will use the default
  53. configuration stored in stiletto.ini.
  54.  
  55. Stiletto.exe must be in the same directory as the stiletto.ini file and
  56. the stilethk.dll library that are included in stiletto.zip.

  58. If you find Stiletto useful, you will probably want to put in it your
  59. StartUp group so that Stiletto starts automatically with Windows.

  61. To de-install Stilletto, remove it from your StartUp group and
  62. erase the directory containing Stiletto.   (The 3D control
  63. library is used by many programs so you should leave it in your
  64. Windows directory; the file name is ctl3dv2.dll).
