What is Outcome-Based Education?
Many people may not be familiar with the relatively new term
"Outcome-Based Education" (OBE). GRADING SKILLS POWER was
developed to help ease the increased work load Outcome-Based
Education will bring.
The Minnesota State Department of Education has adopted the
following definition of Outcome-Based Education (1991):
Education that is outcome-based is a learner-centered,
results-oriented system founded on the belief that all
individuals can learn. In this system:
1) What is to be learned is clearly identified;
2) Learner's progress is based on demonstrated achievement;
3) Multiple instructional and assessment strategies are
available to meet the needs of each learner;
4) Time and assistance are provided for each learner to reach
maximum potential.
Outcome-Based Education is one method for obtaining greater
accountability from teachers for their students' academic
achievement. The Minnesota State Department of Education has
issued a state mandate that all K-12 public schools across the
state must implement outcome-based curriculum by 1995. Other
states are either considering or legislating "Outcome-Based
Education."
Clearly, OBE requires more teacher time and effort than
conventional instruction. OBE requires the teacher to
continually monitor each student's work, determine what skills
and tasks (outcomes) each student has mastered, and provide
immediate feedback. Teachers will be required to further
individualize their instruction, create and administer an
assortment of assessment tools, and keep extensive records of
each student's progress. GRADING SKILLS POWER has been designed
to help keep these extensive student records.

GRADING SKILLS POWER MANUAL
Chapter 1 - GENERAL INFORMATION
1-0 INTRODUCTION
GRADING SKILLS POWER is NOT a normal grade book program. This program
is a teacher developed database of student skills and a record of
mastery levels of those skills by all students. Student grades can be
based on skill mastery levels and skill weights. This program was
designed specifically for Outcome-Based Education. Skills are entered
in different skill groups ( for example, math, science, reading,
etc.). Reports are created listing the skills and the levels of
student mastery. Administrative summaries include totals of all
skills the students have achieved. Reports can be quickly printed
listing up to 900 skills to be learned during the school year.
GRADING SKILLS POWER can be used by both elementary and secondary
teachers. Elementary teachers divide skills into groups based on the
subject matter (for example, math, science, reading, etc.). Secondary
teachers divide skills into groups based on their units. For example,
an earth science teacher could have groups called rocks and minerals,
weathering and erosion, rivers, ground water, glaciers, volcanoes and
plate tectonics, weather, oceanography, and astronomy.
This program allows up to 60 skills listed in each of 15 skill groups.
Up to 15 classes (groups of students) can use the same set of skills.
GRADING SKILLS POWER can keep up-to-the-minute information for all
students. The program prepares, prints and stores information
necessary to produce comprehensive reports. You will save hours of
your time usually spent preparing for conferences, for preparing
reports for parents, and completing reports for administrators.
GRADING SKILLS POWER is specifically designed to be simple to
understand and easy to use. The ten menus allow easy movement through
the program so you can begin recording student skills in just a few
minutes.

Chapter 1 - GENERAL INFORMATION
1-4 HARD DISK INSTALLATION
If you are in WINDOWS or a software application, exit the program or
master menu to return to your DOS prompt (probably C:\>).
To Exit WINDOWS, follow these steps (you may have to repeat steps 1
and 2):
1. Hold down the Alt key and press the space bar.
2. Hold down the Alt key and press the F4 function key.
3. A message box will be displayed stating "This will end your
Windows session." Move the mouse pointer to the OK button. Press
the left mouse button once.
Now you are at the DOS prompt. C:> is displayed on the screen.
If C:\> is not displayed, Type CD\, then Enter.
Now you are going to make a subdirectory, change to the new
subdirectory, and copy the files from the program diskette to the new
subdirectory.
4. Type MD SKILLS Press Enter. You have just made a subdirectory
even though it looks like nothing was done.
5. Type CD SKILLS Press Enter. You have just changed to the SKILLS
subdirectory. The DOS prompt is C:\SKILLS>
6. Place the floppy program diskette (either 3 1/2" or 5 1/4" size)
in the disk drive. Type COPY A:*.* Then press Enter. The
program files will be copied to your hard drive. You will know
the copying is done when the message "3 files copied" is
displayed. You can remove the floppy diskette from the disk
drive. This floppy should not be needed again. Store it in a
safe place.
1-5 STARTING A NEW SCHOOL YEAR
This section explains how to start a new school year. The DOS prompt
should be C:\SKILLS> If this prompt is not displayed, type CD\ then
type CD SKILLS Then press Enter.
These files (SKILLS.EXE, COMMENTS.GRD, and WISORDER.DOC) must be
located in this subdirectory. The file SKILLS.DRV will be created
when this program is properly installed. The file SKILLS.DRV contains
the location of all skills and student data.
You need to decide where to keep your skills and student data and a
back up copy of your data. Each of the 3 choices have some advantages
and some disadvantages.
a. On a floppy diskette - (either A: or B:) - You would keep a back
up of your student data in the C:\SKILLS subdirectory.
Page 9
GRADING SKILLS POWER MANUAL
Chapter 1 - GENERAL INFORMATION
b. In the same subdirectory as the program. You would keep a back up
of your student data on a separate diskette inserted in either
drive A: or B:
c. In another subdirectory on your hard drive. If you make this
choice, the program will make the new subdirectory for you when
you are answering the 4 start-up questions. You should keep a back
up copy of your student data on a separate diskette inserted in
either drive A: or B:
The following instructions are followed ONLY at the start of a school
year (or you teach semester classes with totally different students in
each class each semester). I recommend that a new formatted floppy be
used for your student data. If you are saving your student data on
the hard drive, previous student data files need to be erased. These
files are from previous years. As mentioned above, only 3 files need
to be located in the SKILLS subdirectory to start the program. The
file SKILLS.DRV will be created after the program is started the first
time.
If your student data was stored in a different subdirectory, all
student files (not skill files) in that subdirectory need to be
erased. GRADING SKILLS POWER refuses to overwrite existing student
data files with blank files of the same name. This was done to
prevent accidentally blanking out your valuable data. The easiest way
to remove student files, and keep the skill text files, is to use the
selection to delete student data on the NAMES MENU. Student data file
names and descriptions are found in section 11-5.
1. If you decided to keep your student data on a floppy diskette,
place the blank formatted student data diskette in the disk drive.
2. Type SKILLS /INSTALL Then press Enter to start GRADING SKILLS
POWER for the new school year.
3. You are asked if you want to start a new school year. Press Y for
Yes. The number of classes on your data diskette is set to 0.
4. Now you will be asked four questions so the correct file structure
can be determined by GRADING SKILLS POWER.
Question 1: Drive Containing Student Data:
Enter the letter of the disk drive (and optional subdirectory) to be
used for saving your student data.
a. If you decided to save your student data on a floppy diskette,
enter either A:\ or B:\ and press Enter.
b: If you decided to save your student data in the same subdirectory
as the program, just press Enter.
c. If you decided to save your student data in a different hard drive
subdirectory, enter the drive and subdirectory (for example
C:\SKILLS\DATA\). This subdirectory will be created if necessary.
Page 10

Chapter 1 - GENERAL INFORMATION
Question 2: Current School Year:
This question asks for the current school year. Enter a school year
in the format 1994-95. This information is needed for displaying the
proper semester 6 month calendar when the F2 function key is pressed
and for determining attendance information.
Question 3: Quarters (Terms) per Semester:
This question asks for the number of terms per semester. Many schools
use two-9 week quarters (terms) per semester. Other school districts
(corporations) use three-6 week terms per semester.
The correct number of terms (either 2 or 3) is needed so the correct
number of empty files are created for recording grades. In GRADING
SKILLS POWER, term and quarter are defined as a part of a semester.
+========================+========================+
| August - January | January - June |
| Semester 1 | Semester 2 |
| Quarter 1 Quarter 2 | Quarter 3 Quarter 4 |
| or | or |
| Term 1 Term 2 Term 3 | Term 4 Term 5 Term 6 |
+========================+========================+
Question 4: Starting Quarter Number:
This question asks the starting quarter (term) number. If you are
beginning the program at the start of the school year, you would
answer 1. Teachers starting the second semester would answer either 3
or 4, depending on the number of terms per semester. Refer to the
chart above.
After these four questions are answered, two files are created. The
file SKILLS.DRV is created in the program subdirectory of the hard
disk. SKILLS.DRV contains the drive letter (and subdirectory) of your
skill and student data.
The file SKILLS.CNF will be created on your student data diskette or
in the student data subdirectory of your hard disk. SKILLS.CNF
contains your class names, printer codes, teacher name, school name,
and other settings used by the program. Since you haven't entered
your class names or other information, the information will either be
blank, or contain default (start-up) settings.

1-5), the fourth question asked for the starting term number. To
change quarters, press enter, then a number between 1 and 6. A
message will appear reminding you to save letter grades and
percentages with a selection from the Utility Menu before switching
quarters (terms). The saved percentages are used to calculate
semester grades. Some schools use 6-six week terms to determine
grades and others use 4-nine week quarters. In this program, term and
quarter have the same meaning.
Use the UTILITY Menu Selection to adjust a student's grade for a
previous quarter (term). Then save the changed grades. The UTILITY
Menu selection can also be used to enter previous term grades if you
did not start using GRADING SKILLS POWER at the very beginning of the
school year.
2-2 USING STUDENT NAME OR IDENTIFICATION CODE
Some print outs on the SKILLS, UNIT, and REPORTS MENUS can be made
using either the student name or the student identification code.
Move the cursor to this selection, press enter, then press either N

2-3 REVISE/REVIEW COMMON MESSAGE ON INDIVIDUAL REPORTS
Messages might ask parents to call the school if they have any
questions. The message can be up to 10 lines long. A student message
could be a reminder that a book report, etc is due.
Pressing the F1 function key displays a help screen for editing lines
of the common message. The edit help screen can be displayed through
out the program to help edit text information. After editing the last
line, press Enter or the up or down arrow curror to have the displayed
information replace the information in the SKILLS.CNF file. Then press
ESCape.
The letter Y must be entered on the Miscellaneous Settings - Sub Menu
for this common message to be printed.
2-4 TEACHER'S NAME TO BE PRINTED ON REPORTS
The teacher's name is included on most print outs.
2-5 SCHOOL'S NAME TO BE PRINTED ON REPORTS
The school's name is included on many print outs. Either the school
name will be printed or a 1 and 1/2" margin will be left at the top of
the student progress reports. The margin allows you to use school
letterhead for the printing of the progress report. The setting on
the Miscellaneous Sub-Menu determines if the top margin should be left
for the school letterhead. The option of using the school letterhead
applies only to the progress report.
2-6 WHICH SKILLS TO PRINT
This selection determines which skills are printed on the skill
reports. This selection does not determine which skills are used to
calculate the student grades. Skills mark with an X for the
Quarter(term) indicating all students are excused, are not included on

2-7 SKILL REPORT TITLE
The title that is entered will be printed on many reports. This title
does not print on reports made with the Unit Menu. Unit Menu reports
use the title entered with the title selection of the Unit Menu.
2-8 NUMBER OF GRADING TERMS PER SEMESTER
Enter the number of terms each semester. You must enter either the
number 2 or 3. Semesters usually contain either 2-nine week or 3-six
week grading terms per semester. The number of grading terms is used
for recording attendance and student progress information.
2-9 SKILL MASTERY LEVELS
When this selection is made, a chart showing the skill mastery levels
and their respective weights is displayed. Each mastery level must
begin with a different letter. The hyphen (-) is reserved for excusing
students from individual skills. Excused skills are not included in
grade calculations. Up to six mastery levels can be entered. Some
school districts use three levels called Beginning, Developmental,
and Independent. The higher the weight, the higher the achievement
level. Mastery level weights may vary from 0 to 9. Use the tab key
to move between columns. Press Enter, then Escape when you have
finished entering mastery levels and their weights. The first letter
of each mastery level will be displayed on the SET UP MENU. The
following chart displays five of six possible levels.
+---------------------+
| MASTERY LEVEL WT |
| Unacceptable = 0 |
| Novice = 1 |
| Apprentice = 2 |
| Proficient = 3 |
| Distinguished = 4 |
+---------------------+
2-10 STUDENT CALCULATIONS
This selection determines how the student grades for the current term
will be calculated. Grades can be calculated from either Class
completed skills or Student completed skills.
If Class completed skills is selected, any skill which at least one
student in the class has completed will be used in the calculation.
If the student has not completed the skill, it is counted as 0 until a
mastery level is entered for the student.
Page 16
GRADING SKILLS POWER MANUAL
Chapter 2 - SET UP MENU
If Student completed skills is selected, any skill which the student
has had a mastery level entered will be used in the calculation. If a
student has not completed the skill (no mastery level entered) or a
hyphen was used to excuse the student from the skill, the skill weight
is ignored when the grade calculations are made.
Total points earned during the quarter will be compared to the total
points possible. The letter grade will be determined by the
percentages you entered on the SET UP MENU.
2-11 METHOD TO CALCULATE SEMESTER GRADES
To work properly, the grades from the previous quarter (term) must
have been saved with selections 2 through 6 of the Utility Menu.
Five different methods can be used to calculate semester grades.
Different methods can be used for different classes.
1. Weight/Numbers
2. Weight/Percentages = 100
3. Last Quarter Only
4. Weight/12 Point Scale
5. Cumulative Points
The Weight/Numbers method is identical to the Weighting/Percentages
method, but the total does not have to equal 100. For example, each
term as 1 for a total of 3. Each term would be 1/3 of the total
weight.
If Weight/Percentages is chosen, the semester grade is determined by
the entered weights for each term and semester exam. The weights for
the quarters (terms) and semester exam must total 100%.
If your school uses 3-six week (terms) per semester:
Weight for Quarter (Term) 1 Grade: 33
Weight for Quarter (Term) 2 Grade: 33
Weight for Quarter (Term) 3 Grade: 34
Total Weight: 100
If your school uses 2-nine week quarters (terms) per semester:
Weight for Quarter (Term) 1 Grade: 50
Weight for Quarter (Term) 2 Grade: 50
Total Weight: 100
If the term has not been used, but that term is assigned a percentage
weight, that weight will be distributed to the other term(s).
Page 17
GRADING SKILLS POWER MANUAL
Chapter 2 - SET UP MENU
For example, if we use these percentages, and we are in the second
term, the 34% for term 3 must be distributed to the other terms.
Otherwise, 34% of every student's grade would include an F grade (34%
of 0 points). Since the first two terms are weighted equally, the 34%
would be distributed equally to the two terms. These weights would
change 1st Term to 50% and 2nd Term to 50%. When the semester is
completed, the grade would be calculated based on the assigned weights
(33%, 33% and 34%).
The Last Quarter Only method uses only the current quarter to
determine the semester grade. The previous quarter grades will be
printed on some reports, but they will be ignored in the calculations.
The Weighting/12 Point Scale assigns numerical values to the earned
letter grades for each term. At the end of the semester, the weighted
numerical values are added to determine the final semester grade.
If Cumulative Points is chosen, total points earned in all terms of
the current semester will be added. The semester grade will be based
on the total points earned out of the total points (weight) possible.
This method is best if you have a different number of total points
possible in each quarter. Cumulative Points is the default grading
method.
After entering this information, press ESCape to leave this display
screen. The selected method will be displayed on the SET UP MENU.
2-12 REVISE/REVIEW LETTER GRADES/PERCENTAGES
Most school systems use the letter grades displayed below in the left
column (the default). Some districts do not use +'s and -'s.
Some schools use the letter E for Effort instead of the letter F. The
last letter grade by position 13 in the chart will be calculated as 0
points earned on assignments.
GRADING SKILLS POWER allows any of the first six letters of the
alphabet (ABCDEF) to be used. Each set of 3 letter grades (1-3),
(4-6), (7-9), and (10-12) must start with the same letter as displayed
in the chart. The middle letter of each group should not have a plus
or minus sign. If plus or minus letter grades are omitted, the middle
letter grade must be entered as displayed in the second column.
If your school does not use letter grades, enter a period to replace
every letter grade and set letter grades to No with the Miscellaneous
Settings.
Page 18

Chapter 2 - SET UP MENU
Percentages should be set to your grading curve. Student letter
grades for the selected class will be determined by the percentages
listed on this chart:
These entered percentages are the bottom of each letter grade. The
default scale is listed in the left column.
1. A+ = 100.01 1. A = 90 1. A+ = 98
2. A = 93.333 2. A = 90 2. A = 94
3. A- = 90 3. A = 90 3. A = 94
4. B+ = 86.667 4. B = 80 4. B+ = 90
5. B = 83.333 5. B = 80 5. B = 86
6. B- = 80 6. B = 80 6. B = 86
7. C+ = 76.667 7. C = 70 7. C = 78
8. C = 73.333 8. C = 70 8. C = 78
9. C- = 70 9. C = 70 9. C = 78
10. D+ = 66.667 10. D = 60 10. D = 70
11. D = 63.333 11. D = 60 11. D = 70
12. D- = 60 12. D = 60 12. D = 70
13. F = 0 13. E = 0 13. F = 0
After moving the cursor to the corresponding percentage, enter the new
lowest (bottom) percentage that will be accepted for that letter
grade. Enter spaces to remove any extra digits that are displayed.
Letter grades are assigned to unit, quarter and semester grades,
unless periods replaced all letters. Letter grades will not print on
the reports if the proper setting is made on the Miscellaneous Sub-
Menu.
Press ESCape to leave this display. After saving these letter grades,
they will be used in all letter grade displays and calculations.
2-13 METHOD TO DETERMINE GRADE ACCURACY (ROUNDING)
One of four methods may be chosen to determine the grade. The default
(starting) method is Three Decimals-Down.
1. Two Decimals-Up 3. Closest Integer
2. Two Decimals-Down 4. Full Integer
For example, if the student's grade is 89.65%, the four different
methods calculate as follows:
Page 19
GRADING SKILLS POWER MANUAL
Chapter 2 - SET UP MENU
Method 1 (Two Decimals-Up) First finds the letter
grade from the 89.65%, then rounds up to 90%
if a bottom percentage of the letter grade is
not crossed, else 89% will print.
Method 2 (Two Decimals-Down) First finds the letter
grade from 89.65%, then rounds to 89% when
necessary. - Default
Method 3 (Closest Integer) rounds the grade up to 90%,
then determines the letter grade.
Method 4 (Full Integer) drops the fraction, rounds the
grade to 89%, then gets the letter grade.
2-14 SELECTING A PRINTER
The following printers are supported by GRADING SKILLS POWER. Others
may have been added after this manual was printed.
Epson LQ 24 pin C. Itoh
Epson FX 9 pin Diablo 630
IBM Proprinter X24E Okidata
IBM Proprinter 9 pin Panasonic KX P1091i
HP Laserjet/Deskjet Panasonic KX P2123
Toshiba P1351
After selecting a printer, the name of the printer will be displayed
on the SET UP MENU.
Most printers imitate one or more of the listed printers. If your
printer is not listed, check your printer manual for the proper
setting.
2-15 PRINTER PITCH FOR REPORTS
Most Reports can be printed in either 10, 12, or 17 pitch. If your
printer supports 15 characters per inch (cpi), some reports may be
printed with this pitch. Some printers, for example, the LaserJet II
did not support 12 pitch.
2-16 MISCELLANEOUS SETTINGS SUB-MENU
When this selection is made, another screen of settings is displayed.
Use the up and down arrows to move between settings. These settings
further customize GRADING SKILLS POWER. Press the letter Y for Yes
or N for No. The program ignores settings that do not apply to your
equipment. Press ESCape when you have finished your settings. Then
you can save these settings.

printed on the student progress reports. This message, up to ten
lines long is stored in the student directory or on the student data
diskette. The file name is listed in the ASCII text file column of
the Revise Student Name/I.D. chart viewed with the NAMES MENU. This
text could also be entered with the Revise/Review Student Text File
selection of the NAMES MENU.
2-16-5 INCLUDE COMMON MESSAGE ON ALL PROGRESS REPORTS
If Yes is selected, the common message entered on the SET UP MENU will
be printed on all student progress reports.
2-16-6 INCLUDE PARENT SIGNATURE ON ALL PROGRESS REPORTS
If Yes is selected, the student progress reports will include a
request for the parent signature and date.
____________ ________________________
Date Parent Signature
2-16-7 INCLUDE PARENT COMMENT REQUEST
If Yes is selected, the message "Comments may be written below and
returned to school by the student." will be printed on the student
progress reports.
2-16-8 INCLUDE LETTER GRADES ON SKILL REPORTS
Some schools do not use the letter grades A through F. If your school
does not use letter grades, change this setting to No. Your letter
grades are determined by the settings on the SET UP MENU.
2-16-9 INCLUDE SKILL PERCENTAGES ON SKILL REPORTS
If you do not want to print the percentages on the skill reports,
change this setting to No. The percentages are calculated according
to your settings on the SET UP MENU.
Page 22
GRADING SKILLS POWER MANUAL
Chapter 2 - SET UP MENU
2-16-10 INCLUDE COMBINED SKILL AVERAGE ON SKILL REPORTS
If Yes is selected, the skill average from all skill groups will be
calculated and printed. The combined skill average is calculated by
dividing the total number of points earned by the total number of
points (weight) possible. The skill group with the highest number of
possible points (weight) will the greatest effect on the combined
average. In other words, each skill group does not contribute equally
to the combined average unless all skill groups have the same number
of points possible.
2-16-11 INCLUDE SEMESTER CALCULATIONS ON SKILL REPORTS
Some teachers prefer not to print semester grades on reports until the
end of the semester as a method of student motivation.
This setting is most useful when semester grades are calculated by
weighting. The most common use would be for printing reports early in
the second or third terms of the semester. When weighting is used to
calculate semester grades, second (or third) term points have a much
higher effect on the semester grade early in the term.
2-16-12 INCLUDE SKILL POINTS/WEIGHTS ON SKILL REPORTS
This setting determines if the skill weights are printed on detailed
reports, administrative summaries, and skill listings. Skill weights
are entered on the Enter/Add/Revise/Mark Skills of the GROUP MENU.
On individual reports, this setting determines if points earned out of
points possible are printed. The points earned/possible are printed
next to the mastery level. The points possible are determined by
multiplying the skill weight by the highest mastery weight. The
points earned are determined by multiplying the skill weight by the
earned mastery weight.
2-16-13 INCLUDE SKILL QUARTER (TERM) ON SKILL REPORTS
If Yes is selected, the quarter (term) number the skill is to be
mastered is printed on the reports.
2-16-14 PAPER/RIBBON SAVE OPTION
The ribbon save feature is useful when printing the student grid on
the NAMES MENU. If No is selected, all 36 rows of the grid will be
printed. If Yes is selected, only one extra row is printed.
Page 23
GRADING SKILLS POWER MANUAL
Chapter 2 - SET UP MENU
2-16-15 ONE DIRECTION PRINTING FOR LINE DRAWING
When set to Yes, the printer is set to print lines always starting at
the left side of the paper. This makes a neater print out, but also
increases the time to print the report. This setting only affects the
lines drawn for seating charts, attendance reports, and the student
grid of boxes.
2-16-16 PRINTER SUPPORT FOR LINE DRAW CHARACTERS
This setting is used to print the calendars of the Individual
Attendance Reports. If the wrong setting is made a series of weird or
foreign language characters are printed for the line borders of the
calendar months. If No is selected, regular characters (dashes, the
plus sign, and vertical bar) are substituted for the line drawing
characters.
For LaserJet printers, an attempt is made to use the PC-8 character
set which supports line drawing. The default set of the LaserJet
printer (Roman-8) does not support the line drawing characters. The
best way to find the correct setting for a compatible printer is to
print a sample attendance report or seating chart.
2-16-17 IGNORE CHECKING FOR PRINTER STATUS
GRADING SKILLS POWER always checks the status of the parallel printer
port before sending any data. This normally works quite well. You
may experience problems if you map a parallel port to a serial one by
the MODE command, or if you have a non-standard, or very fast
computer. The program might actually think that your printer port
(LPT1:) is busy when you know it is not. If you have printer problems
like this, press Y for Yes to ignore the printer status.
A laser printer always ignores the printer status.
2-16-18 FLIP SEATING CHART CELL LABELS
When set to No, the seats are labeled like a spreadsheet as displayed
on page 28. However, some teachers prefer the front of the room to be
labeled as the first row (A1, B1, C1, etc.). When set to Yes, A1
swaps places with A6, A5 with A2, A3 with A4, B1 with B6, etc.
2-17 SAVING THE DISPLAYED INFORMATION
When you are done making changes, choose this selection. The next
time you start GRADING SKILLS POWER, these saved values will be used.

The Class I.D. may be up to 10 letters long. Each student should have
a different Class I.D. If you post student grades, this code can be
substituted for the student name on some print outs in place of the
student name. This code might be a school I.D., pseudonym, text book
number, social security number, etc. If you do not want to use an
I.D. code, leave this column empty.
The ASCII Text column displays the DOS filename of personal message
that can be written on specific individual progress reports. Messages
may be up to 10 lines long. A filename is automatically entered if
one is not displayed. The text editor can be accessed by pressing
Alt-T when the cursor is on the row containing the student name. This
same text can also be accessed from the selection on the NAMES MENU.
These text files are saved on the student data diskette or in the
student data subdirectory. Pressing Alt-D deletes the text file name
so the file will not print on the reports.
When student progress reports are printed, the student data diskette
is checked to see if a matching ASCII file exists. If it exists, and
the Miscellaneous Settings Sub-Menu has the proper setting, the text
information is included on the student progress report.
SuperData1 and SuperData2 are other ways to organize reports. For
example, if the word football was entered for all football players,
you would be able to print reports for just football players.
Different SuperData like the homeroom, golf or debate, etc. could be
used to generate a different group of reports. The program checks
for SuperData matches in either column when selecting students.
The SuperData2 column may be used in a future version of GRADING
SKILLS POWER to link to an administrative package for class scheduling
and report card generation.

The asterisk next to the number indicates a negative comment. The
comments can be revised with any word processor that can read and save
in ASCII format. If you are using DOS version 5.0 or later, comments
can be edited by typing EDIT COMMENTS.GRD and pressing Enter at the
DOS prompt C:\SKILLS> All 81 comments must be present in a revised
comment listing.
Pressing Alt-W pops-up a window displaying 16 of the 81 available
comments. Pressing the up arrow, down arrow, PgUp, and PgDn keys
display the remaining comments. Then press ESCape to remove the
pop-up window before entering comment numbers.
Pressing tab moves the cursor between the three comments that can be
entered for each student. Pressing Alt-D deletes the student comment
number.
The comments made for each student can be also be printed with this
selection. The numbers are not printed on student progress reports.
3-6 RECORD/REVISE TEXT FOR PROGRESS REPORTS
After selecting the class and student, a personal message box will be
displayed which allows up to 10 lines of text to be entered, saved,
and printed on individual reports. The Enter key must be pressed
before pressing ESCape to make sure the last line properly replaces
the last line in the computer's memory.
The following options will be displayed:
<S>ave <C>ontinue <N>ot save
Normally the letter S is pressed to save the text. After the text is
saved you are asked if you want to view/edit other text files for this
class. If you press Y for Yes, the class names are displayed for your
selection. You can press ESCape twice to leave this selection if
necessary. Pressing N for No, returns you to the NAMES MENU.
If you had accidentally pressed the ESCape key, or notice a mistake in
the display, you can press the letter C. The cursor will return to
the first displayed line. If the letter N is pressed, the displayed
text will not be saved to your subdirectory or student data diskette.
The next time this menu selection is made, the previously recorded
text will be read from the data subdirectory or student data diskette.
These text files are not backed up using the Back Up Files selection
of the UTILITY MENU. Yes must be selected on the Miscellaneous
Settings Sub-menu of the SET UP menu to print these text files. If
you do not want selected text files to be printed on the student
progress

reports, you can delete the file from the student data diskette or
subdirectory using DOS. You could also go to the Revise Student names
of the NAMES MENU, select the student and use the tab key to move to
the ASCII Text column. Press Alt-D to Delete the displayed filename.
Press the enter key. Then press the ESCape key. Then press S to Save
the displayed information.
3-7,3-8 PRINT OUT STUDENT NAMES - SCREEN DISPLAY
Selection 7 prints out for one class. Selection 8 prints out all
classes. This selection prints out a student listing as it appears on
the display. Three blank lines will be printed in front of each
student name. This is an easy way to print a student listing for a
field trip, etc.
If you don't have immediate access to a computer to record student
mastery, this print out can be used for temporarily recording student
mastery levels. It is often much easier to enter grades from one
sheet of paper than from 36 copies of unalphabetized papers at a
computer.

this selection.
3-13 DELETE COMPLETE NAME/RECORD - ONE STUDENT
Student information entered with selection 3 of this menu can be
deleted at any time with this selection. If you need to keep some
record of the student grades, you should either make an individual
printout for the student first.
First select the class the student is enrolled in. Then move the
cursor with the up or down arrow key to the student to be dropped. The
Number of the student will be displayed. Press enter to continue. A
message stating all records from all terms of the current semester for
this student will be deleted. Press any key except ESCape to
continue. Enter the word DELETE to confirm.
If you enter DELETE, all information, including name, identification
code, and all mastery levels will be removed.
To keep information about a student, EXcuse the student from all
future skills. This is done with the GROUPS MENU.

3-14 DELETE ALL STUDENT NAMES AND RECORDS - ONE CLASS
All information about a class can be deleted with this selection.
First select the number of the class. The current class name will be
displayed. Below the class name you must enter the word DELETE.
By entering the word DELETE, all information about the class,
including all students, I.D.'s, and all grades will be removed. Use
this selection with great care.
This selection is usually used by teachers who have a mixture of
classes of different durations. For example, some classes may only
last one quarter or one semester while others may last all year. If
you need to have a record of these grades, make sure you make detailed
print outs of the classes before deleting them.
This selection can also be used to delete all class information
(names, attendance, and mastery levels), but keep the skill text
levels and skill weights. This selection can also be used to clear
student data to start a new school year. The skills entered on the
GROUP menu are not deleted with this selection.

Records for up to 15 skill groups for each class can be maintained on
your diskette. Each skill group can have up to 60 skills. Skill
Group titles must be entered before skills can be added to any group.
Press ESCAPE when you are done entering the skill groups.
All classes (groups of students) can use the same group of skills.
Students and classes can be excused from selected skill groups with
selection 6 of this menu.
Elementary Teachers
Elementary teachers would divide the skills into groups based on the
discipline ( for example, math, science, reading, etc.). If a teacher
taught two classes of students, both classes could use the same skill
groups.
If some skill groups are not taught to a class of students, you could
excuse those students with selection 6 from the GROUPS MENU.
Secondary Teachers
Secondary teachers would divide the skills into groups based on their
units. For example, an earth science teacher could have groups called
rocks and minerals, weathering and erosion, rivers, ground water,
glaciers, volcanoes and plate tectonics, weather, oceanography, and
astronomy.
All classes use the same skill groups. If some skill groups haven't
been taught yet, excuse students with selection 6 of the GROUPS MENU.

Alt-M = Mark All Skills Tab = Move between columns F1 = Help
The first column labeled Num. indicates the skill number. Up to 60
skills can be placed in each group. The second column labeled Wt
refers to the skill weight. Skills which require advanced thinking
are usually given more weight. In the example above, since
multiplication requires more thought than addition, it is assigned a
higher weight. Skill weights can vary from 1 to 9. The skill weight
is multiplied by the mastery level weights to determine the points
earned and points possible.
The third column labeled Q indicates the quarter (term) that the skill
is to be mastered. Any term number or the letter X for excused can be
entered in this column. This column determines which skills are
printed and used in calculating student grades. Alt-M, followed by
the mark character, quickly marks the entire column with the mark.
For example, if you pressed Alt-M, then 1, all skills would be marked
for mastery in quarter (term) 1.
The fourth column labeled U marks the skill unit. In the example
above, addition skills are marked with the letter A, and subtraction
skills are marked with the letter S. All UNIT menu selections use
these marks to identify skills for reports created on the UNIT menu.
Any character can be used to mark the skill unit.
Page 35
GRADING SKILLS POWER MANUAL
Chapter 4 - GROUP SKILLS MENU
The last column displays the skill text. If a plus sign appears at
the right edge of the column, it indicates text extends beyond the
edge. Each skill can be up to 120 characters long. Only the first 60
characters are displayed. When reports are printed, the complete
skill will be properly printed.
Skills can be added to groups at any time. Do not skip any rows when
entering the skills. If you have 50 skills in your group, then the
first 50 rows must have skill text. The Enter key, up arrow, or down
arrow must be pressed after each skill text is entered.
To move the cursor, use the up, down, page up, page down, and tab
keys. The F1 key can be pressed to display a help screen for editing
information.
Alt-S can be pressed to search for skill text. When Alt-S is pressed,
enter the text to search and find. The program searches all text
after the current skill number for the first occurrence of your text.
If the text is found, the chart is adjusted, with the cursor located
at the skill number. This searching ignores capitalization, so you do
not have to remember if your text contains capital letters.
When you have finished entering the skills, press the ESCAPE key.
Then you will be asked if you want to save these changes. Enter Y for
Yes or N for No. This skill group is saved before returning to the
GROUPS MENU.
4-4,4-5 PRINT OUT ALL SKILLS
Selection 4 prints skills from one skill group. Selection 5 prints
out skills from all groups. Selection 6 of the SET UP menu determines
which skills are included on this report. Skills completed for the
year, semester, term, or current term, or all skills can be printed.
To the left of the skill text additional columns of information can be
included. Columns that can be included are Skill Weight and Skill
Term. The additional columns are printed if Yes is selected on the
Miscellaneous Settings sub-menu of the SET UP menu.
If you want student totals for each skill, you must use selections
from the SKILLS, UNIT, and REPORTS menus.
Page 36

Chapter 4 - GROUP SKILLS MENU
4-6 EXCUSE STUDENTS FROM AN ENTIRE SKILL GROUP
Each class (group of students) can use the same group of skills. The
data for each class is kept in separate files by the program. If a
student is excused from the skill group, individual print outs will
not include that skill group for the excused students. All students
can be excused from a skill by marking the Qtr(term) with an X on the
GROUPS menu. Individual students can be excused from a skill by
using a hyphen (-) for the student mastery level on the SKILLS Menu.
Elementary Teachers
If some skill groups are not taught by you, you could excuse those
students with selection 6 from the GROUPS MENU.
Secondary Teachers
For example, an earth science teacher could have groups called rocks
and minerals, weathering and erosion, rivers, glaciers, volcanoes and
plate tectonics, weather, oceanography, and astronomy.
All classes can use the same skill groups. If a skill group, for
example, astronomy, has not been taught yet, you could quickly excuse
all students with this selection. Pressing Alt-M, followed by X
quickly excuses all students from a skill group by entering the X in
the Group column for all students. Alt-M, followed by the space
quickly removes the marks in the column for all students.

only made if you are completely changing the skills students should
master.
This selection would be used to completely remove the sample student
names, skills and data files that were included with this program.
To delete only student data, but keep the skill text, weights, and
unit marks use the Delete All Student Names/Records - One Class
selection on the NAMES MENU. Then you will not have to reenter these
skills to start a new school year. Use this selection with great
care.
If you need to keep some record of these skills, you should make
detailed print outs before deleting these skills.
First select the group number to delete. Press the Enter key to

all groups, the reports for each student are printed before advancing
to the next student. To start printing reports at a student other
than the first student, select Advance Student Number on the EXTRA
MENU before using this selection.
5-6 PRINT OUT STUDENT SKILL REPORTS - MATCHING SUPERDATA
This selection will search all groups. If the student's SuperData is
the same as the requested SuperData, a Student Skill Report will be
printed. This set of reports is ideal for providing coaches with
complete information about student academic performance. The
SuperData is listed in either SuperData Data column of the Revise
Student Name chart viewed with the NAMES MENU.
5-7 PRINT OUT STUDENT SKILL REPORTS - DEFICIENCY
This selection searches all groups. If the student's current
percentage is equal to or below the deficiency percentage entered with
this selection, then a Student Skill Report will be printed. These
reports are ideal for providing guidance counselors with detailed
information about students performing below average. Some schools
have substituted this report for school deficiency reports that are
sent home to parents.
5-8 PRINT OUT STUDENT SKILL REPORTS - DEFICIENCY/SUPERDATA
This selection searches all groups. If the student's current
percentage is equal to or below the deficiency percentage entered with
this selection and the student's Superdata matches the requested
Superdata, then a Student Skill Report will be printed. These reports
are ideal for providing guidance counselors with detailed information
about students performing below average.

5-9,5-10 PRINT OUT COMPLETE DETAILED RECORDS - ONE GROUP
Selection 9 prints out the Detailed Achievement Report for one skill
group for one class. Selection 10 prints out the Detailed Achievement
Report for all skill groups for one class.
After selecting the group, the detailed record is printed. The pitch
setting from the SET UP menu determines how many skills are included
on each sheet. This detailed record can be glued into your school
grade book at the end of each quarter (term).
Selection 6 of the SET UP menu determines which skills are included on
this report. Skills completed for the year, semester, term, or
current term, or all skills can be printed. Skill calculations are
determined by selection 10 of the SET UP menu, skill weights, and
skill mastery levels.
To the left of the skill text additional columns of information can be
included. Columns that can be included are Average Percentages and
Letter Grade for the class, Skill Term, Skill Weights, and the number
of students achieving each mastery level. The Percentage and letter
grades are determined by the information entered with selections 10
and 12 of the SET UP menu. The skill quarter (term) was set on the
GROUP menu. The mastery levels were entered with the first selection
of the SKILL menu. These additional columns are printed if Yes is
selected on the Miscellaneous settings sub-menu of the SET UP menu.
The detailed record includes all student names, all mastery levels,
quarter (term) percentage, letter grade, and points earned, points
possible for the current term. The semester grade and percentage is
also included if the current term is not the first term of the
semester. The semester points earned from semester points possible is
also printed if semester grades are calculated by cumulative points.
This selection should be used periodically to create printed copies of
your grades. Detailed records can be glued into your grade book at
the end of each quarter. Periodic printing can help prevent panic if
your data diskette becomes accidentally damaged. This is also why
back-ups of the student data should be made periodically.
Skills too long to fit on one line will automatically formatted to
print properly. This report provides the most complete record of all
reports in GRADING SKILLS POWER.
The line below this menu selection displays the date (from the system
date) that detailed records of all classes were printed.
A sample detailed record print out is on the next page.

6-1 UNIT REPORT TITLE
This title is only printed on UNIT reports from the UNIT menu. This
title does not print on reports made from other menus. The title for
reports from other menus is entered on the SET UP Menu.
A Unit refers to a sub set of a skill group. For example, the
mathematics skill group could have addition, subtraction,
multiplication, division, etc. The addition skills could be marked
with the letter A on the GROUP Menu. With this selection, the title
Addition Skills could be entered. When reports are selected from this
menu, the title Addition Skills would be printed. When a selection is
made from this menu, you will be asked which mark will be used to
match the skills for this report. If the letter A was entered to mark
addition skills, you would press the letter A.
6-2,6-3,6-4,6-5 INDIVIDUAL SKILL UNIT REPORT PRINT OUTS
You will be asked which Unit mark to use. Skills are marked on the
GROUP menu selection Enter/Add/Revise/Mark selection. If more than
one class was entered, you must select the class first. If you are
printing for only one group, you must select the skill group. Then
select the student. After making the appropriate selections, the
report will be printed.
To start printing reports at a student other than the first student,
select Advance Student Number from the EXTRA menu before using these
selections. To start printing reports with a group other than the
first group, select Advance Group Number on the EXTRA MENU before
using this selection. As multiple student reports are processed, the
student name will be displayed on the screen.

If the mark you enter for the report matches the mark from the GROUP
menu, the skills are included on this report. Class excused skills
(the quarter(term) is marked with an X instead of a number) will not
be printed. Unit skills may come from different terms. Skill
calculations are determined by selection 10 of the SET UP menu, skill
weights, and skill mastery levels.
To the left of the skill text additional columns of information can be
included. Columns that can be included are Skill Term, Mastery Level,
and Points Earned/Points Possible (Weight). The skill quarter (term)
was set on the GROUP menu. The mastery level was entered with the
first selection of the SKILL menu. Points earned is calculated by
multiplying the skill weight by the mastery level weight. The points
possible are calculated by multiplying the skill weight by the highest
skill mastery level. These additional columns are printed if Yes is
selected on the Miscellaneous settings sub-menu of the SET UP menu.

7-6,7-7 LISTINGS - SUPERDATA AND DEFICIENCY MATCHES
Selection 6 includes all students with SuperData matching the
requested SuperData. Selection 7 will include all students with have
a percentage equal to or less than the deficiency percentage.
You will be asked if you want to alphabetize the list (by either name
or Class I.D.), on the complete print out.
These selections are most useful to make a one page listing of
students matching either the superdata, or earning a low percentage.
The SuperData was entered in the Revise Student Names/I.D. selection
of the NAMES MENU.
7-8 LISTINGS - DEFICIENCY SUPERDATA MATCHES - ALL GROUPS
This selection makes a listing of students matching the SuperData and
earning a low percentage. This printout makes it very easy to provide
a student listing for school districts and states using the NO-PASS-
NO-PLAY rule. SuperData was entered in either SuperData column of the
Revise Student Names/I.D. selection of the NAMES MENU.
For example, SPORT could be entered in the SuperData column of the
Revise Student Name/I.D. selection of the NAMES MENU. When this
selection is made, enter the deficiency percentage and SPORT for the
matching SuperData. All students having a percentage equal to or less
than the deficiency percentage and having SPORT for the SuperData
would be printed on this report.
7-9 LISTINGS - COMBINED AVERAGE LISTING
The combined average of students is calculated by taking the total
points earned and dividing by the total points possible for all
classes. The total points earned is calculated by multiplying the
skill weights by the mastery levels. The total points possible is
calculated by multiplying the skill weights by the maximum skill
mastery level weight of all skill groups. If one skill group has
twice as many points possible as a second skill group, the first skill
group will count twice as much towards the combined average. In other
words, each skill group does not contribute equally to the combined
average.
7-10 VIEW/PRINT OUT COMPLETE SEMESTER SUMMARY
After selecting the group, the Quarter/Semester Summary will be
displayed. If I.D. was chosen with the SET UP MENU, the student Class
I.D. code will
be printed instead of the student name.

9-1 MAKING A BACK UP OF THE STUDENT DATA DISKETTE
This selection automatically makes a back up copy of the student data
diskette without using the DOS utilities. Follow the instructions on
the screen.
The original student data diskette must remain in the regular disk
drive. You may press ESCape to leave this selection.
To back up your data to a hard drive subdirectory that contains the
program, you would enter C:\SKILLS\
To back up your data to a diskette, you would only need to enter the
Drive letter and the colon and back slash, for example A:\
If necessary, place a formatted diskette in the BACK UP disk drive.
Press Y for Yes to Continue with the BACK UP process.
The student name, data, attendance, and note pad files will be read
and copied to the back up diskette. The ASCII Text files printed on
the progress reports (displayed on the Revise Student Names/I.D.
selection of the NAMES MENU) are not backed up. If the BACK UP
diskette was in the drive that normally contains the program diskette
because you only have two disk drives, return the GRADING SKILLS POWER
program diskette to that disk drive. Then press any key to continue.
If your original data diskette becomes damaged, you can read your data
from your back up diskette. This is why it is important to make back
ups of your data. Computer diskettes and people are not perfect.

C:\DATA\ Then you will be asked if you are ready to read the new
data. Press Y for Yes. You should then either save the new drive
information by saving the information in memory with the SET UP MENU,
and make a back up of this data to another floppy diskette.
This new drive information will be used until you change it again by
starting GRADING SKILLS POWER again with the SKILLS /J option. Then
enter the old drive information, and save that information with the
SAVE selection of the SET UP MENU.
9-2 SAVE CURRENT QUARTER (TERM) GRADES/PERCENTS
Selections 2 through 6 save the current quarter (term) letter grades
and percents. Selections in red or with a bullet to the left of the
choice can not be selected. Only the current term can be selected.
Grades for each quarter (term) are stored with the other student data.
Print outs that include the LAST QTR grade use this information saved
with these selections. The percents are also used to calculate
semester grades.
9-3 REVISE PREVIOUS TERM LETTER GRADE/PERCENT
Occasionally it might be necessary to adjust a student's previous term
(quarter) grade. After selecting the class, group, and previous term,
the list of student letter grades and percents are displayed. Use the
up and down arrows to move to the student. Enter the new percent.
The letter grade will be automatically recalculated.

10-14 ABOUT GRADING SKILLS POWER
The GRADING SKILLS POWER program and manual were written entirely by
Terry L. Jepson. The author, a full time teacher, gave up his
weekend, evening, and vacation time he could have spent watching foot-
ball games, spending time with friends, or just relaxing.
He has tried to add those features requested by his customers to meet
their needs. Please reward him by having your friends buy their copy
of the program.
WISCO Computing is planning Windows and Macintosh versions of GRADING
SKILLS POWER. Contact WISCO Computing for availability.

Chapter 11 - MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION
11-1 ADDITIONAL START UP OPTIONS
Use the instructions on pages 9 through 12 for normal start up.
Information on retrieving student data from a backup diskette or hard
drive subdirectory can be found in section 11-1-2 of this manual.
GRADING SKILLS POWER is normally started by typing SKILLS However,
there may be times when you need to start differently. These
additional start up options are typed after SKILLS as indicated below.
11-1-1 SKILLS /INSTALL
This option is used to start GRADING SKILLS POWER for a new school
year. These complete detailed instructions are found on pages 9
through 12.
11-1-2 SKILLS /J
You will be prompted to enter the drive or subdirectory containing the
student data. This option overrides the subdirectory setting in the
SKILLS.DRV file. For example, a department with a legal site license
would only need one copy of the GRADING SKILLS POWER program on the
computer. All teachers could access their data in different
subdirectories using this option.
When the program is started with the command SKILLS /J you will be
asked to enter the drive containing the student data. If your data is
on a diskette, enter the drive letter, colon, and back slash, for
example, A:\ If your student data is in a hard drive subdirectory,
enter the drive letter, colon, back slash, and subdirectory name, for
example, C:\DATA\ Then you will asked if you are ready to read the
new data. Press Y for Yes. This data drive information will be saved
when any settings are saved on the SET UP MENU.
11-1-3 SKILLS /JC:\SMITH\
This start up option automatically accesses data from the SMITH
subdirectory of drive C:. Jones could keep data in subdirectory
C:\JONES\ and start the program with SKILLS /JC:\JONES\ Smith could
keep data in subdirectory C:\SMITH\ and start the program with SKILLS
/JC:\SMITH\ This option is useful for using a menu selection program
to access different directories with the site license version.

11-3 ENHANCEMENTS PLANNED FOR GRADING SKILLS POWER
Windows and Macintosh versions of GRADING SKILLS POWER are being
considered for the future. Contact WISCO Computing for availability.
Customer requests determine which additional features and modules are
added to this powerful program.
11-4 FILES CREATED BY GRADING SKILLS POWER
The file SKILLS.DRV is created on the program diskette. It contains
the drive or drive subdirectory to search for student data. It must be
located in the subdirectory as the program SKILLS.EXE
The file SKILLS.CNF is created on the student data diskette. This
file contains class titles and period names, skill group names,
printer number, and other information displayed on the SET UP MENU.
An automatic back up of this file is called SKILLS.CN1.
All files starting with SKILLS1. are used for the first class recorded
on the Student Names Menu. Files ending with .NAM contain student
