"SAF-NET"
- Information File -
Thanks for showing your interest in what "SAF-NET" is all about. This
file, will hopefully give you some idea of what we are doing and the other
files available in "SAFNET.ARC", should give you enough information to help
you join "SAF-NET", so you can become involved as well. If you already
belong to another network, we are very similar, but please read the
"SAF_POL.*" document, as we do differ in our policies, from some of the
other networks, in some ways.
"SAF-NET" is made up entirely of volunteers, who share the same desires
to help get information across, to as many people as possible. In this case,
the information concerns "SAFETY" in the Private and Public arena.
This is somewhat specialized, we know, but with the help of a number of
individuals, organizations and companies, the involvement should become
exciting for all concerned. You do not necessarilly need to
be interested in "SAFETY" itself, to become involved, instead, you may
just be interested in participating, in a special type of network, to see
what can be done for people, who are not normally involved with computers,
as you may be.
SAF-NET's fairly "specialized" interest group, is somewhat deceiving,
in that it appears to be more limited, than it actually is. Yes, we do
have a general "chit-chat" echo. The "network" itself, is currently becoming
involved in a variety of endeavours designed, to not only promote our
activities, on the computer, but others as well.
Because of this "specialization" and the audience we are targeting
with the network, there will be many people, getting involved, who are
new to all of this. This is a major concern for us and we have
developed a number of ways to make their involvement easier. For you,
the SysOp, mainly we want you to be aware that there may be some people
calling your systems, who do not "seem" to know what they are doing. We
ask that you treat them well, help them as best you can and should
things become too burdensome, let one of the officials know, so we may
contact them directly and help get them get going.
JOINING SAF-NET:
Since you have most likely, freq'd this file, from some system near
you, you already have a pretty good idea of what you are doing, technically,
so I won't bore you with that side of things. Just install the nodelist,
available as SAFLIST or in the SAFNET.ARC file, compile it so your mailer
can use it and send off a message to the listed "NC" of your area,
requesting a "Net/Node" number. The SAF_POL.* document, outlines what you
need to include in the message and how to go about doing it. From there,
you should be all set.
Should you not be able to find an "NC" in your area, you are welcome to
directly poll the "RC", for your region of the country. Should that be
difficult for you, for any reason, you are welcome to just poll 144:144/0 or
1:3003/911 or 1:11/600 and I will get you the necessary information,
or get things setup, for you.
GENERAL INFORMATION:
Files Included in SAFNET.*:
SAF_POL.* SAF-NET Policy Document.
REQUEST.EXE SAF-Net program to request a node number
FILEBONE.NA SAF-NET File Areas
SAFELIST.NA SAF-NET EchoList - Echoes being carried on "SAF-NET".
SAFLIST.A?? SAF-NET Nodelist.
SAF-INFO This file.
Most, if not all the files above, are available individually as well,
from any of the "officials" of "SAF-NET".
We ask, NOT require, that (if possible) you put all the "SAF-NET" items
into their own area, separate from the rest of your system and that access
to this area be made as easy as possible. We do not want you to lower your
security procedures for this, just make "finding" it easy. This is mainly to
help the new people, who may call your system, find what they are after. Of
course, as they get used to things, they may very well wander out into other
areas as well...
That is about it, for now. If you ever have any questions, or just
want to make a comment, you are welcome to talk with any of the "SAF-NET"
adminitrators, or if you prefer, you can NetMail me directly, any time (YES,
I do answer ALL my netmail!).
Welcome to "SAF-NET" and we hope you enjoy your time with us!
Thanks.

Special Thanks goes to John Beirrie for allowing SAF-NET to take the
existing 4X4-Net documents and modify them to meet our needs.
