║ Mini-Review of PAFBOOK - From File PAFBOOK.REV ║

║ PAF Review - Edition 94.4 - December 1994 ║
╚══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
Summary: For a genealogist on a very tight budget who wants to produce a
family history from PAF, PAF Book seems fairly workable. The closest
competition in price and capability would be PAF Ability and the two are
quite comparable in many ways. If you have a laser printer and a good
word processor like Word Perfect or Microsoft's Word, you would probably
be much happier with GENBOOK which cost's $39 more but is far more
powerful in combination with your word processor.
Review: PAF Book has an excellent user interface. It's attractive, with
pull down menus that are fairly intuitive. A mouse is fully supported.
PAF Book includes such niceties as searching your hard disk for sets of
PAF data that you can then select from. The user has extensive control
over what notes should be included, if any, down to the TAG level. PAF
Book optionally generates an index of one or two columns and the user
can select whether to include birth/death years in the index.
Several kinds of printers are supported including laser printers. This
support only goes as far as outputing the correct printer initialization
codes for standard and compressed print. It does not support the
proportional fonts that some printers have so the output is restricted
to fixed pitch fonts.
Many options are included, although not as many as the more expensive
commercial product, GENBOOK. I've heard from some users that they had
difficulty with handling some PAF notes. I document fairly extensively
in my notes and during testing I didn't have any problems that way. In
fact, PAF Book did everything I asked with no lockups, loops, or garbage
output.
I was working with the latest shareware version of PAF Book, version
2.0, which was released in February 1994. I believe that registered
users get additional features which I can't identify for you.
Weaknesses: If the user has a printer which supports publication quality
proportional fonts, they still can't be used.
Although the output can be written to a file, input to a word processor
for use of better fonts, or inclusion of pictures and graphics is not
supported and would be difficult.
