╚══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
A Biograph is a 3 column chart showing the genealogical and, optionally,
the historical events that pertain to a selected individual's life.
Since the program was created in the United Kingdom, the events provided
with the program have a decidedly British flavor (or should I say
flavour). However, the user can modify the event file to delete or add
anything they want. The documentation is provided through an
interactive tutorial program which you can run by itself, or as a TSR
that can be popped up anytime while you are running BIOPAF.
Depending upon which options you select, the biograph includes the
important dates in the lives of the individual you select, as well as
the lives of ancestors, descendants, and other close relatives. You can
also optionally include the individuals PAF notes at the end of the
report. The three columns of the biograph are: age of the individual,
date, and description of the event.
One of the options will create a description of a census record, as it
would appear at the date of the census. You can also select whether
children who would be over the age of 21 should appear on the record.
This could be a hand aide in searching for the actual census record.
The census feature also considers the British census but should work
well for those in the USA as well.
The biograph which is produced by running BIOPAF is placed in a file so
you can edit it before printing. In fact, this utility includes a handy
editor and which can be called without exiting Biographer for PAF.
I found the biograph to be interesting and informative, as well as
useful in pointing out some date problems in my data that weren't
obvious. I liked the output well enough that I used WordPerfect to
dress it up a bit with proportional fonts and tabs. I haven't yet found
a way to completely automate this polishing with WordPerfect macros. If
you are happy with the dates being left justified (I left justified the
"day of week" and right justified the rest of the date) it can be done
with a couple of simple macros.
BIOPAF provides the ability to insert printer setup strings in the file
for just over a dozen of the most common printers including the HP
LaserJet.
Problems: If you live in the USA, support might be a problem because of
distance. This shouldn't be a problem if you live in Great Britain.
Dates that include only the month and the day had a "day of week"
calculated for them. I haven't figured out what algorithm is used.
I experienced problems with short garbage strings being included in a
few entries, and found one individual in my files that would cause
BIOPAF to lock up at a certain point in the data.
I would prefer to see another option that would allow the exclusion of
entries with missing dates or missing years.
