MERGEFILE v1.18 & v2.18 README.DOC 9/17/94
Two versions of MergeFile are provided in this collection, a shareware
version (2.18) and a public domain version (1.18), which does not include
several of the features indicated below. The shareware version has two
registration "reminder" screens. The first screen displays for 10 seconds
before MERGE starts. If a key is pressed, the delay is shortened to about
two seconds. When MERGE finishes running, a prompt appears to print the
registration form. It ends after 7 seconds if no response is made. For a
complete description of MergeFile's operation, please see MERGE.DOC.
MergeFile will merge two sorted ASCII text files of any size with various
options available. The user can select the order (ascending/descending),
case sensitivity, and to keep or remove duplicates. The merge key can be
the entire line or any of the first nine fields, with multiple fields in
sequence of priority, e.g., merge first on field three, then field seven,
followed by five (the fields are not specified by column numbers since one
or more spaces act as delimiters, which left justifies all fields; right
justification can optionally be selected). A single file can be "merged"
on itself, e.g., to remove duplicates from a sorted list. MergeFile tries
to detect four types of errors in the input files: blank or empty line
and missing key or field. The user is prompted before the overwrite of an
existing file (the prompt can be disabled for batch processing). Entering
MERGE without any parameters accesses "help". MergeFile will run with DOS
2.1 and above on an IBM compatible PC, and should perform in a DOS window
with other operating environments as well. Please see INCOMPAT.DOC for
known incompatibilities.
EXCITING (?) NEWS
Added to this package is a Help system file (MPHELP.EXE) for a nearly (as
of the date above) completed merge program unlike any other. Rather than
try to describe its features here, if MERGE v2 does not meet your needs,
take a look at the help screens for MergeFile Professional. Currently in
beta testing, it should be ready for release later this year. MERGEPRO
will not be for everyone, but for those who have specialized requirements,
it may just be the answer. The registration diskette for MergeFile v2
will include a copy of the unregistered version of MERGEPRO. However, you
should indicate in the "comments" section of the registration form that
you would like to receive MERGEPRO in the event you should register before
MERGEPRO is released. The registration price for the MergeFile 2 series
can be applied to the registration fee for MERGEPRO up to 30 days after
receiving your registered v2 package or 30 days after notification that
MERGEPRO is released, whichever is longer.
The diskette registered users receive will also contain a group of utility
programs for miscellaneous purposes. These small programs are added as I
encounter various situations where I need a specific function. Presently
they include: DISKFREE (reports free disk space quickly), LINES (counts
the number of lines in one or more text files), WORDS (counts words),
DELINE (removes a selected line or lines from a text file), and REPLACE
(locates and prompts to replace selected text in files). Also included is
a MISC unit with various functions that either Turbo Pascal forgot or make
it easier to access some of the built in functions.
