K O R T _ I M G
========================
Problem:
────────
In order to start a "DOS from drive A:" session swiftly, usually a
diskimage on hard disk is applied. Unfortunately some PC's can only
produce bootable disk of 1.44 MB or 730 kB in size. The unoccupied
space in such a disk image is a pure waste of space and precious
memory. So you prefer an image as small as possible, e.g. 180 kB.
Solution:
─────────
KORT_IMG converts a large disk image into a smaller one. The program
shrinks the length of a bootable image to the total length of all
files as mentioned in the directory of the diskette. So it is of
vital importance to allign the files on the diskette before the disk
is converted into an image (VMDISK). No unoccupied clusters must be
present between files. It will ruin your image.
The original disk image is not changed. A new image is produced,
named KORT.IMG. If you fill in KORT.IMG in the settings of a "DOS
from Drive A:" icon, Settings -> Session -> DOS setting ->
DOS_STARTUP_DRIVE, you will have a plain DOS session, occupying
minimal memory.
Using KORT_IMG:
───────────────
The programma is started by:
KORT_IMG DOS50.IMG
if the name of the immage DOS50.IMG in the current directory. The
result is:
Input file : \dos\dos144.img
Output file: kort.img
Original information:
bytes per sector : 512
sectors per cluster : 1
sectors before fat#1: 1
# of fats : 2
dirs in rootdir : 224
# of data sectors : 2880
media descriptor : 0xF0
sectors per fat : 9
sectors per track : 18
# of heads : 2
hidden sectors : 0
Modified information:
Length of image : 179720 bytes
The program has been tested in on a 730 kB image, a 1.44 MB and a
180 kB image. In all these cases it worked, however there is no
garantee that it will work allways.
The archive contains a DOS version and an OS/2 version. The program
is bilingual. If the country code is set to 31, messages are printed
in Dutch, in all other cases it is more or less English.
