The Inquisitor Version 2.00.
Remote Access 2.00+ Archive/Graphic/Music Description Importer
Usage Manual
Copyright(c) 1994 by
Mohawk Software and Cory Benjamin
All Rights Reserved.
ABOUT
Have you ever wished you had one program that would pull out FILE_ID.DIZ
or DESC.SDI descriptions from all major archive types, extract size
information from graphics and sample rate/duration from sound files? If
so, keep reading. But first, the disclaimer:
REQUIREMENTS
The Inquisitor was made to run with RemoteAccess v2.0x. It requires a
PC compatible computer and MS or PC DOS V3.3 or higher. Although not
necessary, a disk-caching program will increase performance many times
over. Because RAMGR itself takes alot of conventional memory, the more
that you have free, the better.
WARRANTY
This program is not warranted in any way except that it will take up
space on your hard drive (no promises on exactly how much, however).
Reasonable precautions have been taken to ensure that it will NOT: 1.
Deplete the ozone layer and/or promote global warming; 2. Cause
household pets to start wearing leather jackets; or 3. Create a scandal
if you decide to run for President*.
* Unless, of course, you use it without registering or fail to pay
Social Security for your hired help who use it on your system.
LICENSE
You are granted a limited license to use this program for 30 days or to
generate half of the descriptions on your BBS. If you wish to use this
program beyond the trial period you must register. You may distribute
this program freely in any archive form as long as INQUISIT.EXE,
INQUISIT.DOC, INQUISIT.REG, INCONFIG.EXE and FILE_ID.DIZ are left
unaltered and no charge is made for copies beyond routine access/copying
fees, not to exceed $5.00.
OPERATION
The Inquisitor is intended to retrieve information about as many types
of files as is possible. In addition, if it fails to find information
in the file it's looking at, it will attempt to locate a FILES.BBS in
the current directory. If THAT fails, it will search the list file of
your choice for a description.
CURRENTLY SUPPORTED FILE TYPES
ARC/ARJ/DWC/HYP/LZH/PAK/RAR/SDA/SDN/SQZ/UC2/ZIP/ZOO: Attempt to retrieve
FILE_ID.DIZ followed by DESC.SDI. If not found, optioanlly search
FILES.BBS and/or another file list (user-specified).
LHA/ADS: Attempt to retrieve description for LHA from corresponding ADS
file. If not found, attempt to retrieve FILE_ID.DIZ or DESC.SDI from
LHA or description from FILES.BBS and/or another file list (user
specified).
BMP/GIF/PCX/SCx/TGA: Insert size information at the beginning of the
description, replacing existing size info if recognized. Attempt to
retrieve description from FILES.BBS or optional file list (user
specified) if no description exists. If this fails, images will be
optionally displayed by the viewer of your choice (set in INCONFIG).
You will then be given the opportunity to manually enter a description.
VOC/WAV: Insert sample rate, bits/sample, channels and length in seconds
at the beginning of the description, replacing existing size info if
recognized. Attempt to retrieve description from FILES.BBS or optional
file list (user-specified) if no description exists. If this fails,
sound files can optionally be played by the utility of your choice
(set in inconfig). You will then be given the opportunity to manually
enter a description. The following format is now used for VOC/WAV
information: [SAMPLES/SEC x BITS/SAMPLE x CHANNELS x DURATION].
Example, [16000x8x2x3.7sec] would describe a file recorded using 16000
8 bit samples per second, in stereo, and playing time is 3.7 seconds.
MOD (Sound module): Retrieve title from file if no description exists.
NOTE: If The Inquisitor is unable to get a description of any type for
your file, and no description already existed, The Inquisitor will
insert the desc.: [No description available] (text alterable using
INCONFIG.)
CONFIGURATION
Type INCONFIG. A menu will appear listing the four basic categories of
The Inquisitor's options. These include 'Utilities', 'Options',
'Text Parameters' and 'Extensions'.
The first option, 'Utilities', allows you to enter the path and/or
filenames of utilities. Note that 'Archivers' does not require specific
filenames; INCONFIG will set up extensions for you automatically based
on the archivers it finds in the path you enter.
If you enter an editor name, and have .ADS and .SDA retrieval turned
on, your editor will pop up every time it encounters such a file. This
is because these .ADS and .SDA descriptions can be very large. If you
want the whole thing imported, however, just leave the edit field blank.
You may also enter the commands to display pictures or to play VOC/WAV
files. Enter the commands just as you would in DOS, except that you
must enter the complete path to the software to be used, and substitute
the character '@' where you want the filename inserted to view/play.
Example:
C:\VPIC\VPIC.EXE @ /M4
You may also temporarily disable the displaying of graphics or playing
of sound files by putting the ';' character in front of the command
string.
The 'Options' submenu allows you to adjust the behavior of The
Inquisitor to your taste. You can select whether or not .SDA or .ADS
files will be imported, delay time between first and second files, plus
the maximum number of lines of text to import.
The Inquisitor will optionally add extra spaces to each line of a
description so that RA will display formatted descriptions correctly.
You can define how long each line should be with the 'padding spaces'
option. This defaults to 45 which will work correctly with most
systems. Entering a 0 will disable this option.
'Text Parameters' allows you to define the names of files.bbs listings
and the optional Allfiles listing you wish to use. Some CDROMs have a
files.bbs style listing under another name. You can also enter the
number of the column where filenames begin and where the description
starts. In a files.bbs listing, the description start column applies
only to the first line, since some of these listings shift to the left
after a few lines. Example for an allfiles list:
00000000011111111112222222222333
12345678901234567890123456789012
INQUIS20.ZIP 12-05-94 30000 Inquisitor v2.0. More great features!

Name offset (1) Description offset (32)
'Extensions' allows you to configure the types of files The Inquisitor
will process. Files.bbs and allfiles will be searched regardless.
This section will be partially preconfigured if you've entered an
archiver path.

CONFIGURING REMOTE ACCESS
RACONFIG -> OPTIONS -> FILES -> RAMGR FnKeys: After selecting the FnKey
you want to use, enter the following: [PATH]INQUISIT @ #, where #
should be replaced with the number of the FnKey you chose. Notice that
The Inquisitor can run under any of the 5 FnKeys, as long as you tell it
which one you are using! (Note the example below.)
If you have a very large file database, RAMGR will hog up a lot of
precious memory that The Inquisitor needs to run your archiving programs
with. If this is the case, add *m to the end of the command line, which
will tell RAMGR to shell some of its memory to disk, giving The
Inquisitor its necessary memory. Some archivers, particularily RAR,
require a lot more memory than others. If you have a disk-caching
program loaded, the added delay with adding *m will be minimal...

USING THE INQUISITOR
Run RAMGR, enter a file area and press ALT and the function key you
selected. The Inquisitor will scan all files below the cursor. You may
abort at any time by pressing CTRL-ALT. You may also change
configuration on-the-fly by pressing CTRL-SHIFT, which will load
INCONFIG. Anything you change in INCONFIG will be activated from that
point on. NOTE: Until the registration key is entered, you will have to
press ENTER as each file is scanned. As soon as you register, it will
AUTOMATICALLY go down your whole file area!!!

POSSIBLE BUGS
With the delicate nature of The Inquisitor interfacing between RAMgr,
archiving programs, etc..., things can happen. If you find a problem,
please let me know... I hope you enjoy the basic workability of The
Inquisitor.
Oh, yes... The Inquisitor CANNOT handle any "files.bbs" or allfiles
lists that are over 2.1 gigs (2100 megs) in size, so keep that in mind.
