GFile revision 2.2A - Copyright 1994, Galen J. Bunnell <ASP>
GFile 2.2A Installation/Removal Instructions
===========================================
Note - If you have not read the file REGISTER.DOC, please do so now. It
contains particular license terms and warranty information that
you are implicitly agreeing to by using this program.
Important note for users of earlier versions of GFile -
This installation procedure varies greatly from earlier versions.
Be sure to follow the instructions detailed below. Also, running
GFile 2.2A as the shell is not a simple matter of setting the shell=
parameter in system.ini. Be sure that the older version of GFile
is not configured as the shell, and that is NOT running - either
stand alone or as the shell program - before commencing installation.
Also, this version of GFile will change the format of a couple of
parameters in GFILE.INI. If you anticipate 'back-reving' you may
want to backup your old GFILE.INI file.
System Requirements
===================
To run GFile 2.2A you must be running Windows 3.1+. GFile will not start
if you attempt to run it on a 3.0 or earlier version of Windows. It will
check for the following 3.1 specific DLL files. These libraries must be
present for GFile to function. They are normally installed as part of 3.1 in
the windows\system directory. If GFile fails to run, be sure they haven't
been accidently deleted.
shell.dll
toolhelp.dll
ddeml.dll
Further, the following DLL files are required for the installation program
to run:
ver.dll
lzexpand.dll
To install GFile you must have 800,000 free bytes on the drive on which
GFile will be installed, and 700,000 free bytes on your system disk for
a temporary directory created (and later deleted) by the installation
program.
To install GFile:
=================
0. If you received GFile in an archived format (zip most likely),
unarchive it to a high density floppy or a directory on your hard/ram
disk.
1. Determine the directory in which you wish to place the GFile files.
The default is a directory named GFile under your Windows directory,
but it can be any directory you choose. Please put GFile in its own
directory - it makes removing it much easier.
2. Start Windows (if not already running), and using Program Manager run
the setup program (setup.exe) that is part of the GFile release. The
only thing the program asks is the full path of the directory you
decided on in step 1.
3. A program group named GFile will be created, GFile and notepad entries
for the documentation files will be added as program items to the group.
After installation, you can move GFile to a more convenient group,
and after reading/printing the documentation files, delete their program
items and the group if you wish.
4. If you wish to run GFile as your shell, please carefully follow the
directions in the GFile help file. DO NOT set shell=gfile.exe in
system.ini - GFile will not function properly if you do!
To remove GFile:
================
1. BE SURE WINDOWS IS NOT CONFIGURED TO RUN GFILE AS THE SHELL!!! If
necessary, use GFile's 'Set Shell' menu selection to set Program Manager
(or another shell program) as the shell.
2. Delete any GFile or GFile documentation program items/groups
3. Delete the contents of the GFile directory, and the directory itself.
4. In your Windows directory, delete GFILE.INI and GFILECMD.PIF. GFile does
not create its own area in WIN.INI or SYSTEM.INI. Thus, no clean up of
these files is necessary.
