  161.           Use of this product binds you to the terms of this license
  162.           agreement.  Please read the agreement carefully and do not use
  163.           this product if you do not agree to the terms of the agreement.

  166.           THE EXECUTIONER software product ("Product") is NOT "Public
  167.           Domain" and it is NOT "Freeware."  THE EXECUTIONER is a
  168.           copyrighted software Product developed and Copyright 1994
  169.           MegaSoft Computer Services.  All rights reserved worldwide.

  171.           1.  LICENSE:  You may:  (i) use this Shareware version of THE
  172.           EXECUTIONER software Product on a single computer or on a
  173.           computer network for an evaluation period not to exceed 30 days. 
  174.           After 30 days you are required by law to either register your
  175.           copy by sending the payment as listed in the documentation of
  176.           this product (You can also purchase a registered version of THE
  177.           EXECUTIONER from a software dealer) or cease using the product. 
  178.           Registered users benefit from enhanced technical support, notice
  179.           of new products, and bulletin board access.  Also, please feel
  180.           free to contribute your ideas regarding desired additional
  181.           product features and functionality.  Customization is also

  260.           Welcome to the MegaSoft Executioner, one of the finest software
  261.           organization systems for DOS based applications.  The MegaSoft
  262.           Executioner is now easier and faster to set up and learn.  With
  263.           the quick and easy options, installation and setup should only
  264.           take 10 to 20 minutes.

  268.           Purpose
  269.  
  270.           The main purpose of the Executioner is to allow quick and easy
  271.           execution of applications on your system.  We have included a
  272.           graphical interface along with easy keystroke and mouse functions
  273.           to accomplish this task.

  301.           Requirements

  303.           A VGA monitor is required and a hard drive is recommended.

  307.                                    GETTING STARTED
  308.  
  309.  
  310.           Setting up The Executioner
  311.  
  312.           To begin the setup process, insert the MegaSoft Executioner
  313.           distribution disk in the appropriate drive and enter the
  314.           following command at the DOS prompt:
  315.  
  316.           INSTALL.EXE  
  317.  
  318.           Follow the prompts on your display to complete the installation.
  319.  
  320.  
  321.           Setup:
  322.  
  323.           By accepting the defaults, the Executioner will be installed on
  324.           drive C: in a subdirectory called \EXEMENU.  The default option
  325.           will also cause the menu system to automatically invoke at system
  326.           boot-up.  This setup will be sufficient for most systems.  To use
  327.           the default setup, just press F10 when prompted.
  328.  
  329.           Custom setup is available for more experienced computer users. 
  330.           When viewing the setup screen, you can override the current
  331.           defaults and specify where the software should be installed.  
  332.  
  333.           To customize the installation directory, just type over the
  334.           current drive and path name.
  335.  
  336.           To update the AUTOEXEC.BAT file so that the menu system will
  337.           automatically load on boot-up, the first checkbox should be
  338.           selected.  When installation is complete, your old AUTOEXEC.BAT
  339.           file will be renamed to AUTOEXEC.OLD.  If not selected, your
  340.           AUTOEXEC.BAT file will not be changed and a file called
  341.           AUTOEXEC.NEW will be placed in your root directory with
  342.           modifications needed to run the menu system automatically.
  343.  
  344.           To scan all your drives for known applications and set them up
  345.           automatically on your menu, the second checkbox should be
  346.           selected.  Note that some applications can have the same name as
  347.           others and may be setup incorrectly.  In these cases, just delete
  348.           the few incorrect menu items from the Maintenance option (F2)
  349.           after installation.
  350.  
  351.           Note that file called EXEMENU.BAT will always be placed in your
  352.           root directory so that the menu system can be easily executed
  353.           from the DOS prompt at any time.
  354.  
  355.           To continue installation, press F10.

  360.           Network Setup:
  361.  
  362.           Network setup may require a more experienced DOS user.  To use
  363.           the network features, perform regular setup as indicated above.
  364.           When regular setup is complete, select a unique TWO DIGIT number
  365.           (01-99) for each workstation on the network.  After selecting the
  366.           number, set a DOS environment variable on each workstation called
  367.           EXENODE equal to the assigned number.  It is recommended that
  368.           this be done in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file prior to invocation of the
  369.           menu system.

  371.           Example:  
  372.  
  373.           To set a workstation node number equal to 01, enter the following
  374.           command from the DOS prompt or in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file prior to
  375.           running EXEMENU.
  376.  
  377.           SET EXENODE=01
  378.  
  379.           Note that workstation node numbers that are less than 10 must
  380.           have a preceding zero.  All node numbers must be two digits and
  381.           also must not be used by any other workstation on the network.

  383.  
  384.           Starting the Executioner
  385.  
  386.           To invoke the MegaSoft Executioner, enter EXEMENU from the DOS
  387.           prompt.

  391.                                      SYSTEM SETUP
  392.  
  393.           General
  394.  
  395.           This feature should be executed only by the menu administrator. 
  396.           In a single user environment, you are the administrator.  In a
  397.           multi-user environment, it is suggested that a single person
  398.           perform all setup functions.
  399.  
  400.           To enter system setup, press F3 or F4 from any menu.  From here,
  401.           you will be prompted to enter information pertaining to the
  402.           system configuration.  Note: you may be required to enter a
  403.           password to perform menu maintenance if the menu administrator
  404.           assigned one.

  406.  
  407.  
  408.           Field Information
  409.  
  410.           Main Password:  When a password is entered here, all program
  411.           invocations from the menu will require this password.  Sub-menu
  412.           invocations will not require a password.
  413.  
  414.           Exit to DOS Password:  When a password is entered here, a
  415.           password will be required to exit to DOS from the menu system.
  416.  
  417.           Shell to DOS Password:  When a password is entered here, a
  418.           password will be required to shell to DOS from the menu system. 
  419.  
  420.           Maintenance Password:  When a password is entered here, the
  421.           maintenance option (F2) will require this password.  
  422.  
  423.           Screen saver time:  Enter the number of minutes of inactivity
  424.           required to invoke the screen dimmer.  If no keyboard entries or
  425.           mouse movements are recognized for the specified time period, the
  426.           dimmer will be enabled.  The screen dimmer will not be activated
  427.           if the alarm function is enabled.
  428.  
  429.           Pause when returning:  Select this option if you wish to pause
  430.           before returning to the menu system after executing a menu
  431.           option.
  432.  
  433.           Exit when returning:  Select this option if you wish not to
  434.           return to the menu system after executing a menu option. 
  435.           Selecting this option will return you to the DOS prompt when
  436.           program execution has completed.
  437.  
  438.           Activate System Alarm: Select this option to enable the 45 second
  439.           alarm.  The alarm may be silenced by pressing any key.  Note that
  440.           the screen dimmer will not be activated if the alarm is enabled.
  441.  
  442.           System Alarm time:  Enter the time to enable the alarm.  At the
  443.           selected time, the alarm will sound for 45 seconds or until a key
  444.           is pressed.

  448.           Display Help Buttons:  Select this option to display the help
  449.           buttons on the menu.  
  450.  
  451.           Colors:  Press F4 for color setup.  Select the menu colors you
  452.           desire.  A color sample of your current selection is displayed
  453.           for your reference.

  457.                                    MENU MAINTENANCE
  458.  
  459.           General
  460.  
  461.           This feature should be executed only by the menu administrator. 
  462.           In a single user environment, you are the administrator.  In a

  466.           To enter menu maintenance, press F2 from any menu.  From here,
  467.           you will be prompted to enter information pertaining to the
  468.           program or sub-menu that you wish to invoke.  Note: you may be
  469.           required to enter a password to perform menu maintenance if the
  470.           menu administrator assigned one.

  474.           Field Information:
  475.  
  476.           Program description:  Enter the name of the program or sub-menu
  477.           as you want it to appear on the menu.  If no description is
  478.           entered, the actual program name will be defaulted.
  479.  
  480.           Drive:  Select the letter of the drive where the program resides. 
  481.           In most cases, this will be C.
  482.  
  483.           Path Name:  Enter the path or subdirectory where the program
  484.           resides.  For quick reference of the available subdirectory
  485.           names, press F9 to use the directory tree.
  486.  
  487.           Program Name:  Enter the name of the program to be executed when
  488.           the option is selected from the menu.  Valid program names have
  489.           extensions of .EXE, .COM, and .BAT.   Files without these
  490.           extensions are not allowed.  For quick reference of available
  491.           program names, press F9 to use the directory tree.

  493.  
  494.           Function Keys
  495.  
  496.           Escape:  Use this key to cancel changes and return to the menu.
  497.  
  498.           F1-Help:  Use this key to invoke detailed online help specific to
  499.           the field currently being edited.
  500.  
  501.           F2-Prev Menu:  Use this key to return to the previous menu.  This
  502.           option is only available if you are currently in a sub-menu.
  503.  
  504.           F3-Paste:  Use this option to insert a previously cut program or
  505.           sub-menu.  When pasting, the item will be inserted at the current
  506.           location.  If nothing was previously cut, a blank item will be
  507.           inserted.
  508.  
  509.           F4-Cut:  Use this option to cut or delete the current program or
  510.           sub-menu.  This item may be pasted at another location.

  514.           F5-Insert:  Use this option to insert a blank item at the current
  515.           position.
  516.  
  517.           F6-Options:  Select this option to enter a menu item specific
  518.           password or to enable/update the user defined help.  To edit the
  519.           user defined help text, press F2 from the options window and the
  520.           built-in text editor will be invoked.
  521.  
  522.           F7-Sub Menu:  Use this option to create a sub-menu.  A sub-menu
  523.           name is required in the program description field before a sub-
  524.           menu can be created.  When selecting this option, the sub-menu
  525.           information will appear.  To return to the previous menu, press
  526.           F2.

  528.           F9-Dir Tree:  Use this option to help locate programs within
  529.           subdirectories on the specified drive.  Use the up and down
  530.           cursor keys to move through the directories and files.  Use the
  531.           left and right cursor keys to toggle between the directories or
  532.           files.  When you have located the desired file, highlight it and
  533.           press enter.  The corresponding path and program name will then
  534.           be filled on the current menu item line.

  536.           F10-Save:  Use this option to save all the menu definitions as
  537.           they currently appear.

  543.           Program execution:

  545.           From the DOS prompt, enter:  EXEMENU.EXE
  546.  
  547.  
  548.           User controls:
  549.  
  550.           To select a menu item, highlight the desired program or sub-menu
  551.           using the up and down cursor keys.  To go to the top of the list,
  552.           press HOME.  To go to the bottom of the list press END.  To
  553.           scroll through a page of information at a time, press PAGE-UP or
  554.           PAGE-DOWN.  Note that only ten menu items will be displayed on
  555.           the screen at one time.  Additional menu items can be viewed by
  556.           scrolling up/down using the cursor or PAGE-UP/DOWN keys.  When
  557.           the desired option is highlighted, press ENTER.  The configured
  558.           program will then be executed.  When execution of the desired
  559.           program is complete, control will be returned to the menu system.
  560.  
  561.           The mouse may also be used to select menu options.  If a mouse
  562.           driver is loaded, the mouse icon (an arrow) will appear on the
  563.           menu.  To select a menu option, point the arrow at the menu
  564.           option you desire and press the left mouse button.  The menu
  565.           option will immediately be executed.  From a sub-menu, pressing
  566.           the right mouse button will return you to the previous menu.  To
  567.           page-up or page-down using the mouse, click the left mouse button
  568.           when the mouse icon is above the first menu option or below the
  569.           last menu option respectively.

  572.           Function Keys:
  573.  
  574.           F1-Help: Select this option to view user defined help on the
  575.           current menu option.
  576.  
  577.           F2-Maintenance:  Use this key to enter menu maintenance mode.  A
  578.           password may be required if one was defined by the menu
  579.           administrator.
  580.  
  581.           F3-Setup: Select this option to perform menu system basic setup. 
  582.           This setup includes passwords, color and screen dimmer options. 
  583.           A password may be required for this option if one was previously
  584.           defined by the menu administrator
  585.  
  586.           F8-Shell to DOS: Use this option to shell to DOS without removing
  587.           the menu system from memory.  A password may be required for this
  588.           option if one was defined by the menu administrator.  To return
  589.           to the menu system from DOS, type EXIT and press enter from the
  590.           DOS prompt.
  591.  
  592.           F9-Print:  Select this option to print the registration form or
  593.           User Manual.  A printer selection window will allow you to print
  594.           to LPT1, LPT2 or LPT3.

  598.           F10-Exit to DOS:  Use this key to end the menu program and return
  599.           to the DOS prompt.  A password may be required if one was defined
  600.           by the menu administrator.

  602.           Ctrl-C:  Holding down the control key and pressing the letter "C"
  603.           will invoke the pop-up calculator.  To exit, press Escape.
  604.  
  605.           Ctrl-D:  The system date can be changed by holding down the
  606.           control key and pressing the letter "D" or by clicking the mouse
  607.           icon on the calendar.  When prompted, enter the new date and
  608.           press F10 to permanently update it.
  609.  
  610.           Ctrl-T:  The system time can be changed by holding down the
  611.           control key and pressing the letter "T" or by clicking the mouse
  612.           icon on the clock.  When prompted, enter the new time and press
  613.           F10 to permanently update it.
  614.

  626.           Macros
  627.  
  628.           Definition:  A macro is a recorded list of many key strokes that
  629.           can be played back using an abbreviated number of key strokes.
  630.  
  631.           Purpose:  The purpose of a macro is to perform multiple
  632.           keystrokes using less or easier key strokes.  This is helpful
  633.           when doing repeated tasks that require the same or similar
  634.           keying.
  635.  
  636.           Recording a macro:  To record a macro, hold down the ALT key and
  637.           press /.  You will be prompted for a single letter.  Select a
  638.           letter to be used later to execute the macro play function. 
  639.           After selecting the letter of the macro to record, begin keying
  640.           information.  Every key that is pressed will be recorded in the
  641.           macro.  When finished keying, hold down the ALT key and press the
  642.           / again.  A message will indicate that recording has stopped. 
  643.           The macro is now recorded and may be played back at any time.
  644.  
  645.           Playing a macro:  To play a macro, hold down the ALT key and
  646.           press the letter of macro that was previously recorded.  All key
  647.           strokes that were stored in the macro will now repeat themselves
  648.           in the same order that they were originally entered.

  651.           Screen Dimmer
  652.  
  653.           The screen dimmer will automatically activate when the inactivity
  654.           time defined in the menu setup has expired.  The screen dimmer
  655.           will not invoke if the alarm is enabled.  To force the screen
  656.           dimmer on, hold down the CTRL and ALT and SHIFT keys.

  659.           Performance considerations:
  660.  
  661.           To increase video display speed, set an environment variable
  662.           called EXETEMP to a ramdrive or any other drive that is faster
  663.           than the current drive.  Temporary screen files are sent to the
  664.           EXETEMP directory.  If no EXETEMP directory is specified, screen
  665.           files will appear in the current directory.  Note: screen files
  666.           in the EXETEMP directory will have a two character extension
  667.           reflective of the current workstation node number.  Note, when
  668.           shelling to DOS, do not delete these temporary files.  
  669.  
  670.           Example: To set your temp directory to ramdrive D: in the
  671.           subdirectory \EXETEMP, enter the following in your AUTOEXEC.BAT
  672.           file or from the DOS prompt prior to invoking the menu system.

  674.           SET EXETEMP=D:\EXETEMP\
  675.  
  676.           Note: Make sure that the subdirectory in your SET EXETEMP command
  677.           actually exists (especially when using a ramdrive.)

  684.           Error: Menu system will not load.

  686.           Solution:  Ensure that you are executing the menu system from the
  687.           subdirectory where the menu program resides.  In some instances,
  688.           even if your DOS PATH includes the EXEMENU subdirectory, the menu
  689.           system may not load.

  693.           Error: Sharing violation or Access Denied (when using a network)
  694.  
  695.           Solution:  Ensure that SHARE.EXE (or something compatible) is
  696.           running and change the file attribute on EXEMENU.EXE to read
  697.           only.  From the DOS prompt enter:

  701.           ATTRIB EXEMENU.EXE +R

  703.           Note: SHARE.EXE needs to executed every time the system is reset.
