- HyperCat offers powerful text display and retrieval capabilities,
- multi-level menus, and the best features of a disk based catalog.
-
- Unlike many hypertext applications the text files and menus used with
- HyperCat are easy to create and define. In a few menu driven steps you
- can create multi-level menus that display text files, execute external
- programs or batch files or display additional menus. Utilizing the
- powerful hypertext is equally simple. You don't even have to use
- hypertext unless you want or need to.
-
- The Basic Concept
- Getting around with a keyboard or mouse
-
- Let's make a menu In just three easy steps you
- Let's make some HyperText can be using your own hypertext
- Compile and test it application.
-
- .TOPIC:
- Compile and test it
-
- After your test application has been completed it's time to compile it's
- parts into a single directory for distribution. Compiling scans your
- project files looking for all included parts, external programs and
- graphics. It then processes and copies these to a single directory. After
- completion you have a "ready for distribution" product.

-
- .TOPIC:
- The Basic Concept
- There are basically two things that HyperCat does. First, it allows
- you to easily create menu items which in turn can execute other programs
- or batch files, additional menus and/or display text or powerful hypertext.
-
- The second idea behind HyperCat is hypertext. With only a small amount
- of effort you can create powerful hypertext files that simply display text
- or displays text containing links to related parts of your document.
- Hypertext files can also execute external programs, display graphics and
- even open an interactive, customized order form.
-
- .TOPIC:
- Getting around with a keyboard or mouse
-
- Both the HyperCat Setup program and the HyperCat runtime utilize a
- Windows like interface. Using a mouse you simple "click" on the item
- you wish to move to or activate. Using the key board you can press the
- TAB key to move from object to object or the Arrow keys to move from
- Field to field. Under most circumstances the ESC key will undo an
- operation or clear the screen and the ENTER key will complete or close
- an operation.
-
- When using hypertext the TAB and SHIFT TAB key will move from jump to
- jump while the Home, End, PgUp, PgDn and Arrow keys will scroll any text
- that goes off the screen. Text can be scrolled both up and down and
- left and right.
-
- .TOPIC:
- Let's make a menu
-
- The first step in creating a menu is to define a project name. A
- project is the combination of all menus, hypertext files, setup files,
- external programs, graphics, batch files and any other parts or pieces
- you may include in your HyperCat application. HyperCat keeps up with
- all the parts associated with the project name and assembles them when
- the application is compiled.
-
- If you've gotten this far you've already had to choose a project.
- HyperCat requires a project name so to began a new project you will need
- to select FILE from the pull-down menus, then NEW PROJECT. At the NEW
- PROJECT prompt enter a file name for the project you would like to begin.
- Now press ENTER or click the OK button with the mouse.
-
- The next prompt that appears is the LOAD MENU screen. Since this is a
- new project and there are no menus yet just click the OK button to
- continue.
-
- You should now be looking at the MENU SETUP screen. There's a lot
- of buttons here but it's really quite simple. To create your first menu
- item just click the OK button. You should now see the EDIT MENU ITEM 1
- window. To continue click on MENU SETUP or press the TAB key then
- press ENTER.

- When creating a new menu for the first time you simply click OK to open
- the edit window for MENU ITEM 1 or click on the list box to select an
- existing menu. New menu names are created automatically by the program.

- Edit Item
-
- Each menu item has four parts, some are required and some are optional.
- The parts are:
-
- Menu item text: This will be first menu item hilited by the scroll bar
- when the program is started. <Required>
- Item desc: This is a one line description of the menu item. It is
- not required but is helpful to the user. <Optional>
- File to load: This is the file to load or execute when this item is
- selected and is required. <Required>
- Hypertext jump: This is the topic within a hypertext file to display.
- If left blank the hypertext will default to the first
- of the document containing the Contents topic. <Optional>
-
- To create a menu choice enter the menu item text then a short
- description of what the menu item does. If you are displaying a hypertext
- file with this item enter the name of the file. Be sure to include the
- HYP extension. If you wish this item to display a new menu enter the name
- if the menu file using the MNU extension. To execute an external program
- or batch file enter it's name.
-
- If the menu item is to display a hypertext file you can enter in the
- Hypertext jump field the name of the topic to display. This allows
- different menu choices to display different sections of the same document.
-
- When you're done just click on Save/Exit to return to the Menu Setup
- screen.

- .TOPIC:
- Let's make some hypertext
-
- A hypertext document in it's simplest form is a text file that contains
- "links" to other areas of the document. To turn a text file into
- HyperCat compatible "hypertext" you need only to enter the following text
- on the first two lines of the document and to give the file the HYP
- extension. Make sure both lines begin on the left margin and that the
- word TOPIC is in capital letters.
-

- the running of external programs select one of the topics below:
-
- Creating hypertext Displaying the Order Form
- Executing external programs Displaying Graphics
-
- .TOPIC:
- Displaying the Order Form
-
- HyperCat incorporates a full featured order form that calculates tax
- by state, adds shipping and handling charges and takes all order info
- including credit card, name & address, and user notes.
-
- To invoke the order form from within a hypertext file and have it
- correctly process the order information requires that you format your
- text in special way. To invoke the order form requires only that you
- use the word Order followed by a product number within a hypertext link.
-
- For example: <Order #2323> (Note: The <> characters would
- normally be replaced by the
- ALT 017 and ALT 016 characters.)
-
- Most Important!
-
- An order form link must always start with the word order and end with
- the # character followed by a code. The code can be numeric or alpha
- characters. You can also include additional text between the word Order
- and the # character if you choose.
-
- Somewhere within the document there must also be a matching order number
- followed by the price. For Example:
-
- #ED234 Educational Software for Kids v1.2 $29.95
- You can include any text, anywhere you choose for the
- description of your products as long there is a line somewhere
- that starts with a product number and ends with a price. The
- $ sign is also required.
-
- <Order #ED234> or <Order Educational Software - Product #ED234>
-
- An alternative method of invoking the order form is to provide all the
- necessary information on a single line. For example:
-
- #231AC 230w P/S Full Tower case $59.00
- #123AC Mitsumi CD-ROM 150kb 300 mil sec $79.00
- #792AC Multi I/O 2S 1P 1G $19.00
-
- When a user clicks the order link, HyperCat will scan the document to
- match the order number then invoke the order form with all necessary
- information. You should also review the Order form setup to customize
- the printed order form for your application.
-
- .TOPIC:
- Order Form Setup
-
- The HyperCat order form can be completely customized to reflect your
- company and policies. The order form is completely optional and will
- never be seen by the user unless you invoke it in your text. See the
- help topic Displaying the Order Form for information on invoking the
- order form.
-
- Note: All edit fields in HyperCat use "Hot keys" to move about the text.
-
- HOME - Moves to the first character on the line.
- END - Moves to the last character on the line.
- CTRL-HOME - Moves to the first character in the document.
- CTRL-END - Moves to the last character in the document.
- ARROW KEYS - Move one character at the time in any direction.
- PGUP-PGDN - Scrolls the document one page at the time.
- DEL - Deletes the character the cursor is on.
- CTRL-I - Insets the cursor 5 characters.
- SHIFT ARROW - Blocks text for delete.
-
-
- Text to appear on order from preceding customer address:
-
- This field is a multi-line edit box that allows you to enter any number
- of lines of text you choose. Text entered here will be displayed
- beginning on the first line of the order from and will be followed by
- the user's Name and Address. Use spaces to center or format your text
- and be sure to press the RETURN key after each line.
-
- Text to appear on order form following purchase totals:
-
- Text entered in this field will be printed immediately following the
- purchase totals. This a completely flexible field that allows you to
- place any text on the order you choose. Use spaces to center or format
- your text and be sure to press the RETURN key after each line.
-
- Tax and Miscellaneous
-
- ( ) Do Not Prompt For Taxes
- If this option button is selected the order form tax prompt will
- be dimmed and the user will not have access to it.
-
- ( ) Prompt For Tax on One State/Province
- If this option is selected HyperCat will prompt for a tax rate
- only if the State/Province you enter matches the State/Province
- the user enters. (It is not case sensitive)
-
- ( ) Prompt For Tax on All States or Provinces
- As the title implies, when this option is selected the user will
- allways be prompted for taxes.
-
- State or Province to tax:
- If you select option 2 above you will need to enter the State or
- province to tax in this field.
-
- Currency Character:
- This is the character that will be displayed to indicate the
- currency type being used. $, £, etc...
-
-
- Prompt for Shipping Costs:
- Checking this box will cause HyperCat to make the shipping costs
- field available to the user and what they enter will be factored
- into the totals.
-
- Prompt For Credit Card Purchase:
- If you can accept credit cards you can use this option to have
- HyperCat prompt for credit card purchases. If entered, this
- information will be printed on the order form.
-
- Credit Cards Accepted:
- This is simply a text field that displays with the order form to
- tell customers what credit cards are accepted.

- .TOPIC:
- Project Setup
-
- For each hypertext application or "project" you create there are many
- settings that can vary from project to project. HyperCat keeps these
- settings in the .PRJ file. The Project Setup options allow you to define
- a number of features concerning the "look and feel" and usability of your
- application.
-
- Note: All edit fields in HyperCat use "Hot keys" to move about the text.
-
- HOME - Moves to the first character on the line.
-
-
- Opening Screen Text
-
- The opening screen is useful for providing your name, address, phone
- number information and "getting started" instructions to the user. If the
- opening screen is left or right of the menu the user will see it each time
- they return to a menu.
-
- From the Project Setup screen you can enter any amount of text up to
- 32k. The Opening Screen will scroll up and down allowing the user to
- view an unlimited amount of text.
-
- When displaying the opening screen along side the menu items it will be
- sized to allow the maxium width based on the longest menu item. Try
- different menu items to see how they affect the opening screen. When the
- menus are centered the opening screen will be almost full-screen.
-
- Use spaces to center text and be sure to press the ENTER key after each
- line of text.
-
-
- [ ] Enable Printing of Text
- HyperCat allows the user to block text using the mouse or keyboard
- then send it to "clipboard". The Clipboard is an area where text can
- be collected and then later printed to a printer or text file. If
- you do not want the user to be able to copy or print your data this
- option should be UNCHECKED.
-
- [ ] Enable Opening Screen
- When this option is "checked" you will be able to edit the opening
- data and the opening screen will be displayed when HyperCat is started.
- I "unchecked" the opening screen will be disabled.
-
- [ ] Enable Order Form Display
- When this option is "checked" you will be able to edit the order form
- setup data and the order form options will appear in the HyperCat
- options menu. If "unchecked" the order form will not be available from
- HyperCat and the Order Form Setup will not be accessible from
- HyperCat Setup program. (This program.)
-
- [ ] Return to previous menu
- When this option is "checked" a menu item is added to each menu you
- create. The first or Top menu will have as it's last item the option
- to exit the program. All lower level menus will have as thier last
- menu item, the option to return to the previous menu.
-
- Important! If you do not enable this option you will need to create
- the menu items that allow users to return to previous menus. This
- option allows you to define the text that returns to other menus in
- case each menu contains categorized items.
-
- [ ] Enable options menu item
- When this option is "checked" a menu item is added to each menu you
- create. All menus will have the choice to display the options menu.
- The options menu allows the user to print text from the clipboard,
- change colors, change sound effects and shell to DOS.
-
- [ ] Enable EMS/Disk memory swapping
- HyperCat has the ability to remove itself from memory leaving only a
- 5k "place marker". This feature should be enabled only if you are
- executing external programs that require the extra memory.
-
- HyperCat first seeks to use EMS for memory swapping. If EMS is not
- available HyperCat will seek to find space on every drive on the
- system. If it cannot find space it will perform a normal shell.
-
- Note: If memory conditions are low you may experience problems using
- the HyperCat shell feature when testing under the HyperCat
- Setup program. Under normal operation conditions executing
- external programs should work fine.
-
- ( ) Position Menus Left
- This option causes the opening screen to be displayed on the right of
- the menu. It will also cause the opening screen to be sized to fit
- in the remaining space right of the menu.
-
- ( ) Position Menus Center
- This option causes the opening screen to be displayed "full-screen"
- when the HyperCat program is first started. As soon as a key is
- pressed the opening will clear and the main menu will be displayed in
- the center of the screen. The opening screen will appear only once
- each time the program is executed.
-
- ( ) Position Menus Right
- This option causes the opening screen to be displayed on the left of
- the menu. It will also cause the opening screen to be sized to fit
- in the remaining space left of the menu.
-
- Color Set
-
- HyperCat provides a number of different color combinations for your
- hypertext application. Use the up and down arrow keys to scroll the
- different choices or use the mouse to click the arrow then choose from
- the list.
-
- Project Title
-
- This is the title text that will be displayed across the top of your
- HyperCat application.
-
- If your project will encompass multiple issues or updates you should
- name each project consistantly. Each should begin with a word that
- distinguishes it from the others. HyperCat sorts these names and allows
- a user to jump from one item to another by pressing the letter that
- matches the first letter of the first word.
-
- Example: April Edition - North Carolina PC users group.
- Feburary Edition - North Carolina PC users group.
- March Edition - North Carolina PC users group.
-
- 1st Issue - Computer Animation Newsletter
- 2nd Issue - Computer Animation Newsletter
- 3rd Issue - Computer Animation Newsletter
-
- When you update a project, all the user has to do, is install the new
- data in the same directory as the old data. HyperCat will do the rest.
-
- Order Form
-
- The Order Form button displays the Order Form Setup screen.
-
- Sound Effects
-
- HyperCat has three modes for Sound Effects, Off, Fun and Serious. You
- can click this button to set the defaults for your application.
-
- Save
-
- The Save button will write the current project setup to disk so that
- testing the project will reflect the changes you have made.

- Displaying graphics
-
- HyperCat for DOS uses a simple utility called HCPCX.EXE to display
- PCX graphics. HCPCX will display color graphics in up to 16 color in
- any resolution. 640 x 480 graphic images seem to give the best results.
- The HCPCX program must be present for PCX files to be displayed. HyperCat
- will automatically copy HCPCX when your application is compiled.
-
- Graphics can be displayed using any of three methods. Graphics can be
- displayed from within hypertext files and as a menu item.
-
- To display a PCX graphic from within hypertext you need only to enter
- the PCX filename, the word Figure or the word Show within the link.
-
- Figure <FILENAME> - The word Figure (or Fig) tells HyperCat that the
- following filename should be displayed as a PCX
- Graphic file. Click Fig: Graphic for an example.
- Show <FILENAME> - The word Show or (Sho) works the same as Figure.
- Show tells HyperCat that the following filename
- should be displayed as a PCX Graphic file. Click
- Show Graphic for an example.
- <FILENAME>.PCX - Any filename by itself ending with the PCX
- extension will be displayed as a graphic file.
- Click Graphic.PCX for an example.
-
- To display a PCX graphic as a menu item you simply enter the name of
- the PCX file in the FILE TO LOAD field. Make sure you include the PCX
- extension HyperCat with try to load it as a hypertext file.

- Executing external programs
-
- HyperCat hypertext file can not only jump to other locations within the
- document, they can be used to execute programs or batch files and display
- PCX graphics using a special HyperCat utility.
-
- HyperCat uses "keywords" to identify special functions. Keywords are
- utilized by placing them inside the hypertext link. The following words
- will cause special actions when clicked on by the user:
-
- Run <FILENAME> - Placing the word RUN before a filename in a hyper-
- text link will cause the filename to be executed
- when the link is clicked.
- <FILENAME>.EXE - Placing any executable filename by itself inside
- a link will cause it to be executed when clicked.
- <FILENAME>.COM - Placing any executable filename by itself inside
- a link will cause it to be executed when clicked.
- <FILENAME>.BAT - Placing any executable filename by itself inside
- a link will cause it to be executed when clicked.
- Click on DEMO.BAT for an example.
- Figure <FILENAME> - The word Figure (or Fig) tells HyperCat that the
- following filename should be displayed as a PCX
- Graphic file. See Displaying graphics for more

- <FILENAME>.PCX - Any filename by itself ending with the PCX
- extension will be displayed as a graphic file.
- Click Graphic.PCX for an example.
- Order #1234 - The word Order (or Ord) displays the custom order
- form. Click Displaying the Order Form for more
- information.
-
- .TOPIC:
- Creating hypertext
-
- Creating HyperCat hypertext is easy! Hypertext files are standard ASCII
- files that can be edited with most text editors including the EDIT program
- that comes with DOS.
-
- To create a new Hypertext file:
-
- 1. Determine what data or information you wish to publish.
- 2. Start any text editor that reads and writes ASCII files using a file
- name that has the HYP extension.
- 3. Create a topic named Contents and type a table of contents below. The
- contents topic is required and can be used as a starting point for
- your hypertext application.
- 4. Every entry in the table of contents should be a link to another topic.
- 5. Create a Hypertext topic for every link in the table of contents.
- 6. Every Hypertext topic can contain links to other Hypertext topics.
- 7. Hypertext topics do not need to be listed in the table of contents.
- 8. Hypertext files can be any length or width but each topic is limited
- to 32k. This means the document containing your hypertext topics can
- be any size but the content of each jump or topic must not exceed
- 32k.
-
- HyperCat distinguishes hypertext topics from ordinary text by requiring
- that all topics are formatted in a specific way.
-
- 1. The word TOPIC must be on a line by itself, preceeded by a period (.)
- and followed by a colon (:). TOPIC must be in uppercase.
- 2. The period must be the first character on the line.
- 3. Only spaces are allowed after the colon.
- 4. The name of the topic itself must be on the line immediately below the
- .TOPIC: statement.
- 5. The topic text should begin on the line after the name of the topic.
- 6. The HyperCat will not word wrap text. Use the ENTER key to break text
- into reasonable length lines. 74 character lines work well because
- the hypertext window defaults to 76 characters wide. Lines that exceed
- 76 characters can be scrolled right and left.
- 7. Topics can be located anywhere within the document.
-
- For example, the following would be a valid topic except that the period
- is the second character on the line, not the first. (It is displayed this
- way so as to not confuse the HCS help system which uses hypertext.)
-
- .TOPIC:
- This is a topic name
- This is the first line of this topic.
- Line 2
- Line 3
- Line 4...
-
- This is the last line of this topic.
-
- Creating Links
-
- .TOPIC:
- Creating Links
-
- Links are hot spots that a hypertext user clicks on to jump to another
- topic. Links are ordinary text surrounded by special triangle characters
- (ASCII codes 16 and 17). These characters are entered by pressing and
- holding the ALT then entering the ASCII code. Try this by holding down
- the ALT key, then using the numeric keypad enter the number 017. This
- will cause the left triangle character to appear.
-
- Links and Topics must have exactly the same name or HyperCat will not
- be able to find a Topic when a Link is clicked. Links and topics are
- not case sensitive. If there is no matching topic when a link is clicked
- a warning message will appear. For example, click on Invalid Topic to
- see what happens if you create a Link without a matching Topic.
-
- You can view or edit any of the sample or help files used by HyperCat

- .TOPIC:
- Compile Options
-
- The Compile Option is where you complete your application by assembling
- it's parts into a single directory. HyperCat will scan your HYP and MNU
- files looking for any external programs or graphics used by your program.
- After Compile has run, all the files used or called by your application
- will reside in one place.
-
- You should always develope your application from the HyperCat directory.
- All associated files should be kept with the PRJ files so HyperCat Setup
- can find them at compile time.
-
- Output Directory:
-
- The Output Directory is the location on your hard or floppy disk where
- you wish to store your completed application. HyperCat Setup will always
- overwrite any existing files. If you include a subdirectory name that
- does not exist, as the destination, HyperCat will create it.
-
- Start-up Filename:
-
- The Start-up filename is the name you wish to give the HyperCat EXE
- program. This will be the name your users start your application with.
-
- ( ) Compress HYP and support files.
- ( ) Compress support files only.
-
- HyperCat will compress and encrypt your HYP files to reduce thier size
- and protect your data. Compression is recommended. If you choose to
- compress support files only, your data will remain in it's ASCII state
- and can be accessed by the user. Sometimes this may be desirable such as
- when you distribute a catalog-on-disk. Most times you will want your data
- to use less space and be protected from unauthorized copying.
-
- Note: If you do not want your data accessible be sure to disable the
- copy feature in the Setup and compress your HYP files.
