What is the World Circuit Configuration Editor
----------------------------------------------
The World Circuit Configuration Editor will allow the user to easily swap three
types of configuration files for the Microprose game World Circuit. These files
are the Name file, the F1Prefs file (.DAT) and the F1ED Editor file (.DTA).
The Name file holds the information for the driver's names. Now you can have
the driver's names stored for any year or any circumstance and choose between
them with ease.
The F1Prefs file is the World Circuit configuration file. It contains all of
the data listed in the Game Options Menu as well as any Help Options that the
user has chosen. Now you can have multiple configurations for various reasons.
For example, you may have a file saved for modem use. If you call more than one
number, then you can have a file saved for each number. No more changing
everything before you call. Just load and go.
Another example may be the year you choose to drive. Maybe for 1991 you like to
drive car #1, but for 1993 you like to drive car #8. That's no problem now.
Just select the file with the correct car and off you go.
The limitations are endless. You can now tailor the configuration for any
situation without having to change everything manually before playing the game.
The .DTA file contains the data for the F1ED Editor. It holds the information
for the horsepower of the AI cars, the AI driver skills and the car colors. The
user can now easily swap between any configuration of AI abilities and color
schemes.
The World Circuit Configuration Editor program also allows the user to save .DTA
files. This makes using the F1ED Editor program a little easier. No more
overwriting a file that you worked hard on because you forgot to move it.
The World Circuit Configuration Editor program also allows the use of several
external files. These files are:
* F1ED.EXE - Edits the AI's horsepower, AI's skill level and car colors
* WCF1GP.EXE - Edits the human car's horsepower and AI's cornering ability
* CCPIT.EXE - Sets the AI's pit strategy
* GPLAPTIM.EXE - Records all lap times in the race
* GPLAP.EXE - Decompresses the file created by GPLAPTIM.EXE
* QTYRE.EXE - Allows the use of Q tires in Practice. Also allows the use
of up to 64 sets of Q tires in Qualifying (which is handy
when setting up your car).
The manuals for each of these programs have been included. Please read each one
so you fully understand what each program does.
The World Circuit Configuration Editor program will in no way, shape or form
alter any of the World Circuit files. However, some of the external files,
namely F1ED.EXE, WCF1GP.EXE and QTYRE.EXE, will alter the GP.EXE file.
When connecting over the modem, the GP.EXE files MUST match. If the GP.EXE
files do not match, the computers will still connect normally, but when entering
the cockpit, a 'Link Mismatch Error' will appear in a red bar at the top of the
screen. It has been my experience that a GP.EXE file edited with the windows
editor (GPED) will NOT be compatible with one edited with the F1ED Editor.

Installing the World Circuit Configuration Editor
-------------------------------------------------
1) Move all files into your World Circuit directory.
2) Edit your CONFIG.SYS file to include the following MINIMUM requirements:
Device=C:\HIMEM.SYS
DOS=HIGH,UMB
DeviceHigh=C:\EMM386.EXE RAM #### <- MUST use RAM option (# is optional)
DeviceHigh=C:\MOUSE.SYS
DeviceHigh=C:\RAMDRIVE.SYS 512 /a <- Not required, but HIGHLY recommended
Files=20 <- If GP.EXE will not run, lower this #
Buffers=20 <- If GP.EXE will not run, lower this #
Note 1: Substitute the correct path for the above options.
Note 2: RAMDRIVE.SYS is included with DOS.
3) Create a subdirectory off of the World Circuit directory named 'EDITDATA'
using the following steps:
C:\>cd wrldcrct <- substitute the correct path to your WC directory
C:\WRLDCRCT>md editdata
Ex. C:
|- WRLDCRCT <- have WC load the file 'NAMES.NAM' from this directory
| |- EDITDATA <- store .NAM, .DAT, .DTA and .PIT files here
| |- GPSAVES <- records, setups, saved games, etc (not required)
|
|- etc
Note: All Name (.NAM), F1Prefs (.DAT), Editor (.DTA) and CCPIT (.PIT) files
must be stored in the EDITDATA subdirectory. The directory structure
is not user configurable and must follow the above example for the WC
Configuration Editor to function properly.
4) Move 1991NAME.NAM and ORIGINAL.DTA to the EDITDATA directory.
5) Change the World Circuit Startup Files option (in the Game Options Menu) to
load a name file called 'NAMES.NAM'. It must be loaded from the same
directory as the World Circuit program (ie remove any path name).
Note: This step is done from within World Circuit.
6) There are 2 ways that this program can be used:
- As a stand-alone program. This program may be started from the DOS prompt
and used to change the configuration of your World Circuit files.
Type WCLAUNCH.EXE to run this program from the DOS prompt.
- As a World Circuit startup file (highly recommended). This program should
be run from within your F1GP.BAT file to configure World Circuit before
each race. The recommended F1GP.BAT file would look something like this:
@Echo Off
WCLAUNCH.EXE
GP.EXE /a /g <- This command varies depending on your WC setup.
LAPTIMES.BAT <- Used to view the GPLAPTIM decompression file. This
.BAT file is automatically created by WCLAUNCH.EXE. If
this line is not included, the automatic viewing
feature will not function.
Note: Remove all references of CCPIT and GPLAP from F1GP.BAT or AUTOEXEC.BAT.
4
Using the World Circuit Configuration Editor
--------------------------------------------
The first time the program is run a configuration file (WCLAUNCH.CFG) will be
made. This program will not read your World Circuit files automatically. The
user must select all configuration files manually. Once the files are selected
the WCLAUNCH.CFG file will track the configuration and will contain the proper
configuration information.
Once the configuration file is created the main screen will be displayed. The
main screen will show the current configuration of the World Circuit files. It
will also show the state of CCPIT, GPLAP and QTYRE. There are also 'buttons' to
change the files and use the Editors. The buttons are explained below:
AI Editors - brings up the Editor Menu which consists of the following
buttons:
F1ED.EXE - calls up Gary Levine's F1ED.EXE Editor
WCF1GP.EXE - calls up Hugo Pi's WCF1GP.EXE Editor
CCPIT - selects the options of Trevor Kellaway's CCPIT
GPLAP - selects the options of Trevor Kellaway's GPLAP
QTYRE - selects the options of Trevor Kellaway's QTYRE
Change Name File - lists all available .NAM files for selection
Change DTA File - lists all available .DTA files for selection
Change F1 Prefs - lists all available .DAT files for selection
Exit - exits the program

- Use the right mouse button to adjust the number quickly
Group 1 and Group 2: The numbers for Group 1 and Group 2 can not exceed 26.
You may need to decrease one Group before the other can
be increased.
Percentage of Race: This is the percentage of the race when the cars will
start pitting.
Note: If you do not wish to have a percentage then you MUST set the number
to ZERO to cancel it.
Ex. Percentage: 33 The cars will pit at 33% and 66%
66 of the race. The zero means that
0 you only want two choices.
Ex. Percentage: 50 The cars will pit at 50% of the
0 race. The zeros means that you
0 only want one choice.
6
Max Cars Allowed in Pits: The number of cars is limited to between 5 and 26.
This number may be less than the number for any
Group.
Randomize Settings: This ignores any numbers set for Groups and Percentages,
but does not clear them or make them random. Instead,
it uses the -r option when calling up CCPIT. It is not
necessary to set all values to zero to use this option.
Toggle this selection by using the left mouse button.
This option can not be used in conjunction with the
Default Settings option.
Default Settings: This ignores any numbers set for Groups and Percentages,

loaded file will now appear on the display.
If you wish to cancel the load, click on Cancel. The numbers that
were previously selected will not be changed.
If the file you chose to load is defective or has not been edited
properly, a message will state that the file is not in the proper
format. The non-conforming .PIT file will then be deleted.
It is possible to use any text editor to create the .PIT files,
however, it is suggested to use the Save option to ensure that the
file will be in the proper format.
Save: This will allow the user to save the settings as shown. When naming
the file all DOS rules apply. If the file already exists the user
will be given the option of renaming or overwriting the file.
If a file is saved with either Randomize Settings or Default Settings
selected, the file will be saved with the numbers shown in the
display. The Randomize Settings and Default Settings options will be
ignored during the save. Therefore, it is not recommended to save a
file with these settings selected.
Tip: Call the file something easily remembered.
Ex BELGIUM.PIT would be the settings for Belgium.
Done: Use this button when all settings are complete, including Enabled or
Disabled.
7

Troubleshooting
---------------
Problem: My mouse doesn't work with WCLAUNCH.EXE or it will not work with the
F1ED.EXE editor.
Solution: Your mouse may not be compatible with this program or with F1ED.EXE.
Problem: When I try to list the files it says 'Path Not Found' or 'File Not
Found'.
Solution 1: The directory structure is not installed properly. All files are
read from the directory 'drive:\path\EDITDATA' where:
drive is the letter of the drive that World Circuit is loaded on.
path is the path name that World Circuit is loaded in.
Create the EDITDATA directory and move all .NAM, .DTA, .DAT and
.PIT files into this directory.
Solution 2: There are no files to be read. Verify that there are .NAM, .DTA,
.DAT and .PIT files in the EDITDATA directory.
Problem: The competition level/colors are not the same as I have selected.
Solution: The F1ED.EXE editor was not used properly. After selecting the .DTA
file the user must enter the F1ED.EXE editor. To properly configure
the competition level/colors the user must click on the W in the
upper right corner of the F1ED.EXE display screen. Then click on the
X in the lower right side of the screen. This will update the GP.EXE
file with the new competition level/colors.
Problem: World Circuit will not start after exiting WCLAUNCH. Instead, the
screen flashes and the lapchart file says 'cannot find Logfile' or
the computer locks up completely with a flashing cursor in the upper
right corner of the screen.
Solution: There is not enough free memory. Try to lower the number for both
the Files and Buffers commands in CONFIG.SYS.
Problem: I do not get the 'GPLAPTIM Activated' or 'CCPIT Activated' messages
before entering World Circuit.
Solution 1: You MUST have the command 'Devicehigh=EMM386.SYS RAM' in your
CONFIG.SYS file. The RAM option is required since both CCPIT and
GPLAP are loaded high (LH) when set to Enabled.
Solution 2: You did not Enable these programs in WCLAUNCH. See 'Working With
the CCPIT Options' and 'Working With the GPLAP Options' for
complete instructions for using CCPIT and GPLAP.
Problem: The lap chart does not show all of the options that I have selected.
Solution: Some options override the other options. For example, Fastest Laps
will override all other options and show only Fastest Laps, whether
set by the computer car or by the human car. It is suggested to
familiarize yourself with all of the options of GPLAP to avoid any
confusion.

Note to GPED Users
------------------
You may continue to use the windows editor GPED to alter the competition
level/colors and use this program to alter the Name and F1Prefs files.
In addition, this program can be used to extract the F1ED.DTA file from the
GP.EXE file using the following steps:
1) At the DOS prompt, verify that you are in your World Circuit directory.

Limitations
-----------
This program will create a file (WCLAUNCH.CFG) to keep track of the current
configuration files that the user has loaded. However, if the user changes any
of the files without changing the WC Configuration Editor also, the program will
not correctly show the existing state of that users WC program.
WCLAUNCH.EXE will in no way, shape or form alter any World Circuit files. This
program was not intended to be fully automatic. It is up to the end-user to
keep track of any changes to his/her own files. With proper use of this program
the state of the World Circuit configuration files will always be displayed
correctly.
