Introduction
~~~~~~~~~~~~
UltiMenu is a powerful DOS menu system, that will help both
beginners and experienced computer users. UltiMenu allows you to
run DOS programs from an organized menu, and removes itself
completely from system memory when it executes programs. Up to
18 Categories with 18 Programs per Category are supported. In
addition, UltiMenu offers several built-in utilities such as a
screen blanker, file handler, on-screen clock, calender, contact
manager and label utility. UltiMenu is very easy to use, has
full mouse support, is fully configurable, and offers context
sensitive on-line help.
A slide show demonstration called UMDEMO.EXE has been included
with this package. When UltiMenu is installed, it will offer to
show you the demo. You can also run the presentation from the
DOS command line by typing UMDEMO and pressing the Enter key.
MENU <┘
The first time the program is started, you will be asked if
UltiMenu can modify your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to automatically load
itself every time you start your computer. It is recommended
that you select Y to allow UltiMenu to load automatically.
Next you will be asked if you wish to view the slide show
demonstration. The demo will graphically demonstrate all the
various features available within the program.
Basics
~~~~~~
If you have a mouse, you can simply click on the item of your
choice to select it. Keyboard users can use the arrow keys
(left, right, up and down) to navigate the list of menu items.
Some options may require a specific key press or a combination
of keys to be pressed. A QuickHelp display reminds you of some
important keys, mouse users can also click on the appropriate
line within the QuickHelp window. Context sensitive on-line help
is available at any time within the program by pressing the F1
key.
Programs are accessed in groups called Categories. The main menu
lists all installed Categories. UltiMenu supports up to 18
Categories, and each Category can contain up to 18 programs. To
select a Category, click on the button with the mouse, or use
the arrow keys to move the highlit bar over the desired menu
item and press the Enter key (or simply press the highlighted
Hot key associated with the menu item). After a Category has
been selected, all Programs within the Category are displayed.
The description window at the bottom of the screen shows the
description for the highlighted Category or Program menu item.
Select and execute a Program using the methods described above.
UltiMenu will automatically reload itself after the selected
program terminates. To return to the main menu press the Escape
key. To terminate UltiMenu press the Escape key from the main
menu. You will be prompted to confirm by pressing the Y key, any
other key will return to UltiMenu.
You can add new Categories and new Programs by pressing the F10
key to activate the configuration menu. The system configuration
option allows you to modify the program defaults.
The on-screen calender shows the current month with the date
highlighted. To change the displayed month press the Page Up key
to view the next month, or press the Page Down key to view the
previous month. To change the year press the Control Page Up key
combination to view the next year, or press the Control Page
Down key combination to view the previous year. Mouse users can
simply click on the appropriate arrow icons along the border of
the calender window.
After a specified period of keyboard inactivity (5 minutes by
default) the built-in screen blanker will go active and show a
message bouncing around the display. This prevents damage to
your monitor from "burn-in". Press any key to stop the screen
blanker and regain control of the program.
Configuration
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Press the F10 key to activate the Configuration menu. Mouse
users can click on the appropriate line within the QuickHelp
window.
Select the Add option to add a new Category or Program to the
menu. The Button Name is the name of the item that will be
displayed within the menu. The Description is displayed at the
bottom of the screen when the menu item is highlighted. The
Password field is optional, and allows you to restrict access to
the menu item. If a Category is locked using a Password, all
programs within that Category are protected. For securing
individual Programs, you can enter Passwords for only the
specific Programs that you wish to lock. All Passwords are
encrypted, and it will not possible to access the Category (or
Program) if you forget the Password!
For Program Configuration there are three additional fields. The
Path/Filename specifies the full drive:\path\filename for the
program item. The pop up file directory tree will automatically
appear, allowing you to point-n-shoot the Program filename.
Select a program, or press the Escape key to return to the
Path/Filename field (you can simply type in the required name or
command). If the program requires command line parameters you
can enter them into the Command Line field. If the string
$PROMPT is entered here (in CAPITALS), a window will pop up and
prompt you for a command line when that Program item is
selected. If the string $FILE is entered here (in CAPITALS), the
file directory tree will pop up and allow you to select any file
when that Program item is selected. The Pause on Exit field
allows you to view the display before UltiMenu regains control
after executing a Program. Press the F10 key to save your
changes, or press the Escape key to abort and return to the
menu.
The Delete option allows you to delete the highlighted item. If
a Category is deleted, all Programs within that Category are
also deleted! You will be prompted for confirmation, press the Y
key to delete the item.
The Edit option allows you to edit a menu item. Note that the
Button Name cannot be changed. Press the F10 key to save your
changes, or press the Escape key to abort and return to the
menu.
The System Configuration option allows you to change UltiMenu
defaults and customize the program. Press the F10 key to save
your changes, or press the Escape key to abort and return to the
menu. To change the default program colors, select the Colors
option (press the Enter key). Within the Colors menu press the
Up and the Down keys to change the color, and press the Left and
the Right keys to change the active option. Press the Escape key
to save your changes and return to the Configuration menu. A
sample window on the right of the display shows exactly how your
color selections will appear. All color changes take place
immediately. To restore the internal color scheme press the
Alt-I key combination.
The Last Drive on System field is used by the File Handler and
the pop up file directory tree, and specifies the letter for the
last disk drive attached to your computer. UltiMenu normally
will automatically detect all drives in your system, this field
allows you to override the default setting.
The Double Click option controls the behavior of UltiMenu when a
menu item is clicked with the mouse. The default setting of Y
enables the Double Click feature; the first click will move the
highlit cursor bar to the selected menu item, and a second click
is required in order to choose the item. Pressing a Hot Key
associated with the menu item also respects this setting;
pressing a Hot Key will move the highlit cursor bar over the
selected item, and the Hot Key (or the Enter key) must be
pressed again to choose the item. If the Double Click option is
disabled (with N), a single mouse click or Hot key will select
the option.
The Screen Blanker Time Limit field specifies how long the
internal screen blanker will wait with no keyboard activity
before it activates. A value of 0 will disable the screen
blanker.
The Modem Com Port field specifies the location of your modem.
Only COM 1 and COM 2 are supported. Use a value of 0 if there is
no modem installed in your computer. The internal Contact
Manager uses the modem to dial calls for you.
The Modem Init field specifies a modem initialization string to
reset the modem. The default value for this field is ATM1
(enables modem sound), refer to your modem manual for more
information on modem AT commands.
Enter Your Phone Number where prompted. The internal Contact
Manager uses your number to decide if an area code must be
dialed when making calls, and also for calling pager numbers.
The Clock Size field controls the appearance of the on-screen
clock. The Large setting (the default) shows a large digital
clock, the Small setting displays a small text size clock, and
selecting None will disable the clock.
The Screen Saver Message field allows you to customize the
Screen Blanker. Up to 128 characters can be entered in this
field, and will be displayed bouncing around the screen when the
Screen Blanker is used. If this field is left blank, a random
message will be shown each time the Screen Blanker is activated.
The External Text Editor field allows you to specify an external
editor program. The File Handler will call this program when
editing a file. If this field is left blank, the internal editor
will be used.
The External Text Viewer field allows you to specify an external
file viewer program. The File Handler will call this program
when viewing a text file. If this field is left blank, the
internal file viewer will be used.
The External Image Viewer field allows you to specify an
external image viewer program. The File Handler will call this
program when an image file (PCX and GIF) is viewed. UltiMenu
does not have an internal image viewer.
The External Archive Viewer field allows you to specify an
external archive viewer program. The File Handler will call this
program when a compressed file (ZIP, ARJ and LZH) is viewed.
UltiMenu does not have an internal archive viewer.
The File Handler
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
UltiMenu offers a powerful internal file management utility. The
File Handler allows you to manipulate files and directories. A
file tree window shows all the files and subdirectories within
the currently selected directory. Command options are listed to
the right of the display. Use the arrow keys to navigate the
list of files, pressing the Tab key switches between the file
window and the command window. Select an item by pressing the
Enter key. Mouse users can simply click on the item of their
choice. To install the File Handler as a Program item, you must
specify the Program Path/Filename as INTERNAL and the Command
Line as 02.
The file listing shows all available drives, files and sub
directories within the current directory. To change to another
drive or directory, move the highlit cursor bar over the desired
item and choose it with the Enter key. Pressing an alphabetic
key will cause the cursor bar to jump to the next file item
beginning with that letter. After a file has been selected or
the Tab key is pressed, the command menu will become active.
Pressing the Alt key along with first letter of a command item
will automatically select both the highlighted file and choose
the command.
The Run File command executes the selected file if it is an
executable program (with an extension of .EXE, .COM or .BAT). If
no file has been selected or if the file is not an executable
program, a message will be displayed to that effect. The File
Handler will automatically regain control after the selected
program has terminated.
DOS Command allows you to run any program or DOS command
directly. No file selection is required. The File Handler will
automatically regain control after the selected program or DOS
command has terminated.
The Erase File command allows you to delete the highlighted file
or directory. You will be prompted for confirmation before the
file is deleted (empty directories are deleted without any
prompting). If no file has been selected a message will be
displayed.
The View File command allows you to view the contents of the
selected file. If no external viewer programs have been
specified, the internal file viewer is called for all types of
files. If external programs have been specified, the File
Handler will automatically call the appropriate viewer for image
files (GIF and PCX) and compressed files (ZIP ARJ and LZH), all
other files are considered text files. If no file has been
selected a message will be displayed.
The File Editor command allows you to edit the contents of the
selected file. If no external editor program has been specified,
the internal editor is used. If no file has been selected a
message will be displayed.
The Copy File command allows you to copy the selected file to
another directory and/or another filename. Enter the path and
new filename to copy the file to. If another file exists with
the same name you will be asked if you wish to overwrite it.
Press the Escape key to cancel the Copy command.
The Move File command allows you to move the selected file to
another directory. You can also change the filename, effectively
renaming the file. Enter the path and new filename to move the
file to. If another file exists with the same name you will be
asked if you wish to replace it. Press the Escape key to cancel
the Move command.
The Print File command allows you to print the contents of the
selected file. Be sure that your printer is switched on and
loaded with paper. Once printing has started, it cannot be
interrupted. If no file has been selected a message will be
displayed.
The New Directory command allows you to create a new directory
under the current directory. You will be prompted to enter a
name for the new directory, or press the Escape key to cancel.
The Quit to Menu command (or pressing the Escape key) will
return to the menu.
C> Prompt
~~~~~~~~~
The C> Prompt Program item allows you to shell to the DOS
prompt. You can run programs and DOS commands, to return to
UltiMenu simply type EXIT and press the Enter key. Do NOT run
MENU since that would load a second copy of UltiMenu into
memory!
To install the C> Prompt as a Program item, you must specify the
Program Path/Filename as INTERNAL and the Command Line as 09.
DOS Functions
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Several commonly used DOS commands and functions have been
automatically installed into the DOS Functions Category. You can
also add other functions or commands if needed.
Screen Blanker
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The internal Screen Blanker automatically activates after a
preset period of keyboard inactivity. Simply press any key to
restore the menu and continue.
You can also install the Screen Blanker as a Program item and
select it to blank the screen at any time. To do so, you must
specify the Program Path/Filename as INTERNAL and the Command
Line as 01.
Unless a Screen Saver Message has been specified in the System
Configuration, a random message will be displayed bouncing
around the screen.
Contact Manager
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
UltiMenu offers a powerful built in Contact Manager. You can
store names, addresses and up to four phone numbers. If you have
a modem installed in your system, the Contact Manager can also
dial calls for you! To install the Contact Manager as a Program
item, you must specify the Program Path/Filename as INTERNAL and
the Command Line as 04.
All records within the Contact Manager database are sorted
alphabetically. The window will show the Name, Company, Address,
the Home, Work, FAX and Pager numbers, and a Notes field. All
available commands are listed at the bottom of the display.
Press the first letter of the desired option, mouse users can
simply click on the command to select it.
Press the Q key or the Escape key to return to the menu.
To view the next record press the N key or the Page Down key. To
view the previous record press the P key or the Page Up key.
Press the A key to add new records to the Contact Manager
database. Enter the Name, Company, Address and Phone numbers
where prompted. You can enter a brief message in the Notes field
if required. Press the F10 key to save your entry, or press the
Escape key to abandon the operation.
Press the E key to edit the current record. Use the arrow keys
to navigate the fields. Press the F10 key to save, or press the
Escape key to discard your changes.
Press the D key to delete the current record. You will be
prompted for confirmation, press the Y key to delete or any
other key to cancel. All deletions are permanent.
Press the S key to search for a specific record. Enter a partial
string to search for and press the Enter key. The Name, Company
and Notes fields are checked during searches. All searches begin
at the beginning of the Contact Manager database. If a match is
found the record will be displayed. To continue the same search
press the S key, and press only the Enter key to continue
searching from the current location within the database. If no
matching records are found, a message will be displayed.
Press the C key to call any listed phone number. You must have a
modem installed in your system to allow UltiMenu to dial your
calls. A cursor bar will appear over the phone number fields,
use the arrow keys to navigate the list and select with the
Enter key. If only one phone number exists it will be dialed
without any prompting. After the number has been dialed, a
message will appear reminding you to pick up the telephone
handset and press any key. The Contact Manager uses some
intelligence when dialing calls. The phone number that you have
entered as Your Phone Number in the System Configuration is used
as a guide to decide if an area code needs to be dialed. For
numbers within the same area code, the area code will NOT be
dialed. For numbers outside your area code, the area code WILL
be dialed in the format 1 + area code + phone number. The
Contact Manager also uses Your Phone Number when calling a Pager
number. Pagers are dialed touch tone with your phone number and
terminated with the # tone.

Troubleshooting
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
These are a few solutions for common problems. If you require
assistance, please provide DETAILED information to duplicate the
problem.
Q> Error message "requires DOS v3.3 or higher!"
A> UltiMenu requires DOS version 3.3 or higher. Older versions
of DOS are not supported and cannot be used with this
program. Upgrade your operating system (contact your system
manufacturer for details).
Q> Nothing happens when I type ULTIMENU!
A> You must type MENU and press the Enter key to execute this
program. A batch file has been created in the root directory
allowing you to execute UltiMenu from any subdirectory.
Q> I type MENU and nothing happens!
A> For some reason, your system PATH setting is not correct. Use
a text file editor (like EDIT or EDLIN) and edit the
AUTOEXEC.BAT file in the root directory of the C: drive. Add
C:\ to the PATH statement, for example:
PATH=C:\DOS;C:\WIDGET;C:\GIZMO ;old line
PATH=C:\DOS;C:\WIDGET;C:\GIZMO;C:\ ;new line
If there is no path statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, you
can insert a line (the first line is recommended):
PATH=C:\
Q> I get errors "reading overlay file"!
A> The program files might be corrupted. Do NOT use any .EXE
compression programs (such as PKLITE or LZEXE) on UltiMenu!
It is necessary to reinstall the UltiMenu program files from
the distribution diskette.
If you are using Stacker, DoubleSpace or any other disk
compression programs when you get this error, it is possible
that they are older or incompatible versions. Try to obtain
the latest update for the compression program, or install
UltiMenu on an uncompressed drive.
Q> UltiMenu quits to DOS after I run a program item that has a
batch file!
A> While UltiMenu supports and allows you to execute batch files
(executable files with .BAT extensions), it is possible that
you are executing another batch file from within the original
batch file. Check the batch file and ensure that it does not
run another batch file.
Q> The File Handler does not show all my disk drives in the file
tree!
A> UltiMenu can normally detect all attached disk drives, but if
it does not, press the F10 key (Configuration) and select the
System Configuration option. Edit the Last Drive field to
reflect the correct last drive letter.
Q> I forgot the password that I used for locking a menu item!
A> Unfortunately, it is not possible to access a menu item
without the correct password. Try to remember the password!
