TALKEYS - The Talking Keyboard For Windows - by Compunik Creations
TALKEYS is a Windows program that speaks out the keys on the keyboard as you
type them into any Windows program. The program "intercepts" your keystrokes into
most Windows applications or programs like word-processors, spreadsheets and
databases etc. and speaks them out as they are typed into whatever application or
program you are using.
TALKEYS will speak out almost all characters on the keyboard including all letters,
capital letters, numbers and special keys like Backspace, %, # , Enter etc.
It is hoped that TALKEYS will be useful for persons with visual difficulties such as low
vision, visual impairment and blindness. TALKEYS may be of assistance to visually
impaired persons in using Windows programs for typing text, data, numbers etc.
because TALKEYS will provide them aural (spoken) feedback of the keys they are
typing.
In addition, children as young as a year old could play at the keyboard, and as they
type the keys they will be able to see and hear the letters they type.
If you are reading this file you (or America Online's automatic unzipping) have
already unzipped TLKEYS10.ZIP.
Do steps 1 and 2 to install TALKEYS. These steps are required ONCE ONLY.
1. In Windows File Manager, display the TLKEYS10 directory files in the right
hand window of File Manager. (The TLKEYS10 directory will most probably be
under the C:\WAOL\DOWNLOAD subdirectory).
2. Now double-click on the SETUPTLK.EXE file. The Setup program runs and asks if
you wish to install to the default C:\TALKEYS directory. Click on the CONTINUE
button or type in a name for the directory in which you wish to install the
TALKEYS files and then click the CONTINUE button.(It is recommended that you
accept the default C:\TALKEYS directory). The program files are installed in the
directory you selected and a new Program Manager group called Talkeys is
created with two icons in it. One for the TALKEYS program (Talkeys.exe) and the
other for TALKEYS Instructions (Talkeys.wri). Double-click on the TALKEYS
Instructions icon to run and read detailed instructions on how to use TALKEYS.
Note: You need to have VBRUN300.DLL, a Visual Basic for Windows runtime module
in your C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM subdirectory in order to install and run TALKEYS.
VBRUN300.DLL is used by many shareware programs and if you don't have it in the
above sub-directory, you can download it from America Online (Press the disk-and-
magnifying glass button in WAOL and type in VBRUN in the text box - then download
VBRUN300.ZIP and put VBRUN300.DLL in the above subdirectory).
You will also need a sound-card or Windows PC SPEAKER driver. The driver can
also be downloaded from America Online (Open the Filesearch window as explained
above and use the search word SPEAK).
