  12.  AB    We present a case of an extrapulmonary Pneumocystis carinii infection in
  13.        a human immunodeficiency virus-positive patient undergoing prophylactic
  14.        treatment with pentamidine. The diagnosis was established in pleural and
  15.        ascitic fluid, and the patient died before starting specific systemic
  16.        treatment. We discuss the cytologic differences between pulmonary and
  17.        extrapulmonary infections and the importance of careful screening for
  18.        this pathogen in immunosuppressed patients.
