This is the Readme file for CompuServe members who are first time users of
One-Step High Quality FAX, (HQ-FAX), Copyright (c) 1993 by HTF Consulting.
This file contains information about the following subjects.
1) General information about the shareware distribution method,
2) Information required by the ASP, (Assoc. of Shareware Professionals),
3) How to register and registration benefits,
4) Product support,
5) Installing HQ-FAX,
6) First time use,
7) Context-sensitive Help screens provided with HQ-FAX, and
8) Producing ECL files, (Epson Control Language print-to-disk files).
DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE
=======================
Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before buying.
If you try a Shareware program and continue using it, you are expected to
register. Individual programs differ on details, some request registration
while others require it, some specify a maximum trial period. With
registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue using the
software to an updated program with printed manual.
Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software, and the
copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific exceptions as
stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished programmers, just like
commercial authors, and the programs are of comparable quality.
(In both cases, there are good programs and bad ones)! The main difference
is in the method of distribution. The author specifically grants the right
to copy and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a
specific group. For example, some authors require written permission
before a commercial disk vendor may copy their Shareware.
Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You should
find software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether it's commer-
cial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes fitting your needs easier,
because you can try before you buy. And because the overhead is low,
prices are low also. Shareware has the ultimate money-back guarantee --
if you don't use the product, you don't pay for it.
DISCLAIMER - AGREEMENT
======================
Users of HQ-FAX must accept this disclaimer of warranty:
"HQ-FAX is supplied as is. The author disclaims all warranties, expressed
or implied, including, without limitation, the warranties of merchant-
ability and of fitness for any purpose. The author assumes no liability for
damages, direct or consequential, which may result from the use of HQ-FAX."
HQ-FAX is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge to the user
for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your friends, but please do
not give HQ-FAX away altered or as part of another system. The essence of
"user-supported" software is to provide personal computer users with
quality software without high prices, and yet to provide incentive for
programmers to continue to develop new products.
============
If you find this program useful and find that you are using HQ-FAX regularly
after a 30 day trial period, you should register and make a payment to HTF
Consulting of $24.00 + $3.00 Shipping & Handling ($27.00 total). The $24.00
registration fee will license one copy for use on any one computer.
Users may register through the registration procedure in the Compuserve
Shareware Registration Forum (GO SWREG), or by mailing a check along with
the included order form to this address.

CompuServe IBMCOM Forum, (GO IBMCOM).
3) 120 calendar days of telephone support (one business day turnaround).
4) 900 number telephone support will be provided for one year.
5) Technical problems requiring a software fix will be addressed ASAP.
6) An option to purchase one or more sets of commercial pre-printed
forms (digitized) which work with and enhance the product.
7) Free upgrades on a Semi-annual basis. (Frequent suggestions for
enhancements will be implemented as resources permit).

will make processsing of received FAXes a 1-STEP snap for DOS users.
(Available in the 2nd quarter of '94.)
Pre-registration product support will be confined to start-up assistance
through the Compuserve IBMCOM BBS User-Id [72240, 1745], and through the
U.S. mail. See the address for HTF Consulting below. You may also contact
us by telephone: (510) 521-1689
You must treat this software just like a book. An example is that this
software may be used by any number of people and may be freely moved from
one computer location to another, so long as there is no possibility of it
being used at one location while it's being used at another. Just as a book
cannot be read by two different persons at the same time.
You are encouraged to pass a copy of HQ-FAX along to your friends for
evaluation. Please encourage them to register their copy if they find that
they can use it. All registered users will receive a copy of the latest
version of the HQ-FAX product. Future enhancements are in the works.
Commercial users of HQ-FAX must register and pay for their copies of
HQ-FAX within 30 days of first use or their license is withdrawn.
Site-License arrangements may be made by contacting HTF Consulting at the
address listed below.
.pa
HTF Consulting at the address below for authorization. This authorization
will be automatically granted to distributors recognized by the (ASP) as
adhering to its guidelines for shareware distributors, and such distributors
may begin offering HQ-FAX immediately. However HTF Consulting must be
advised so that the distributor can be kept up-to-date with the latest
version of HQ-FAX).
ASP OMBUDSMAN STATEMENT
===================
The ASP Board has set up an office of Ombudsman and appointed an ASP member
as áOmbudsman. The Ombudsman's sole role is to ámediate ádisputes ì
between ASP members and their customers. The Ombudsman reports to ì
the Board situations where he/she feels Board action or knowledge ì
is appropriate.
All ASP Members and Associate Members are required to cooperate with the
Ombudsman when so requested. The following text is required by the ASP.
[This program is produced by HTF Consulting, a member of the Association
of Shareware Professionals (ASP). ASP wants to make sure that the shareware
principle works for you. If you are unable to resolve a shareware-related
problem with an ASP member by contacting the member directly, ASP may be
able to help. The ASP Ombudsman can help you resolve a dispute or problem
with an ASP member, but does not provide technical support for members'
products. Please write to the ASP Ombudsman at 545 Grover Road, Muskegon,
MI, 49442-9427 USA, FAX 616-788-2765 or send a CompuServe message via
CompuServe Mail to ASP Ombudsman 70007,3536.]
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
======================
As you are reading this Readme file, it is assumed that you have trans-
ferred the complete umcompressed HQ-FAX package to a diskette. If not,
please do so right away. The installation of HQ-FAX is very simple, but
it assumes that it will install itself from a diskette.
1) Mount the installation diskette into drive A: or B:
2) Enter A: or B: Make sure that the DOS prompt changes from
C:> to A:>, or from C:> to B:>. This is very important!
3) Enter "Install". If you wish the package to install itself on any
other than C:\HQFAX, enter the pathname in the Install command.
Example (1): "Install D:\Hqfax",
Example (2): "Install C:\Doc2fax"
Now you can watch HQ-FAX install itself. It will only take a minute.
This install procedure will NOT update your Autoexec.bat file. It will
place a customized "Hqfax.bat" file in the root directory, drive C:, so
that it will change to the C:\HQ-FAX directory (or the directory that
you specified) before executing the HQ-FAX procedure.

==============
ATTENTION! The first time that you run HQ-FAX, you will need to fill in
the field which specifies the FAX file format that you wish to use. This
format must be compatible with your FAX modem product.
Also the first few times that you use the product, you should study the
context-sensitive help screens accessed by pressing the <F1> key. The
help screen provided depends on where the cursor is when you press <F1>.
If the cursor is in a filename field, the appropriate list of file names
will appear. If the cursor is in any other field, general help appears.
That's it! We're ready to go. Start by entering "HQFAX" at the DOS prompt.
Once again the mailing address for HTF Consulting is:

Producing Epson Print Files
This section provides detailed instructions for producing Epson Print
files of your documents from your word processor. These files are the
input files that HQFAX uses to produce the FAX-ready, letter-quality
images of your documents. You do not need an EPSON printer, but you
must be able to print to a disk file as if it were an EPSON printer.
You must do this without upsetting the print driver which you have
installed for your real printer.
If áyour Word Processor produces graphics integrated with text, áit ámay ì
want áto know what graphics resolution you wish to send to the áEPSON-LQ ì
printer. áThe correct choice for HQ-FAX is 180 X 180 d.p.i. This is áthe ì
resolution closest to the Group-3 FAX resolution of 200 X 200 d.p.i. áHQ-ì
FAX áwill ádo a credible job of translating áhigher áresolution áimages, ì
(thanks to the infinite patience of Richard Harper of the Association of ì
Shareware Professionals), but the results will be at best no better than ì
if you choose 180 X 180 d.p.i. Also it will be more of a strain for your ì
word processor and HQ-FAX.
If you use any of the following word processors; 1) WordPerfect, 2) áMS-ì
Word, á3) MS-Works, 4) WordStar, or 5) any Windows application, ásee áthe ì
specific ásub-section áfor your application. If you use áanother áword ì
processor or spreadsheet package, proceed with the instructions áthat ì
follow.
PRODUCING EPSON PRINT FILES FROM ANY STANDARD APPLICATION PACKAGE.
If áyou are using a spreadsheet package or a word processor other áthan ì
those álisted above, do the following. Consult the áreference ámanual ì
for your specific application package for the details for áperforming ì
the following steps.
1) Install the printer driver which most closely matches the EPSON LQ
or EPSON LQ-510.
2) Make the EPSON printer the active or current printer inside your
application (document, spreadsheet or whatever).
3) Study the documentation for your application to learn how to insert
custom print controls into your document. This will be necessary to
use the custom print controls documented in the section Epson Cus-
tom Print Controls.
4) Use the print command in your application to print to a disk file.
The disk file MUST have the ".ECL" file extension, and it must be
stored in a directory such as C:\hqfax or the directory of your
word processor.
5) Run the HQFAX command, identify the ECL file that you wish to
convert, and enter the other conversion parameters as well.
PRODUCING EPSON PRINT FILES FROM MICROSOFT WORD 5.0
1) First, be sure that you have an EPSONLQ PRD file installed in áyour ì
MS-Word ádirectory. This may require you to find your print ádriver ádisì
kette from your MS-Word diskettes.
2) If you have not done so, create your MS-Word document using all áof ì
the áfeatures áof the Epson LQ-510 printer. Find áthe ásection á"Entering ì
Special áCharacters" in the MS-Word for DOS User manual, page á41. áStudy ì
this section to learn how to insert the HQFAX Custom Print Control ácharì
acters into your MS-Word document to produce oversized characters.
3) From the MS-Word main screen, enter <ESC> to select the Command Menu.
Enter 'P' for the Print Menu. Enter 'O' to select options.
4) áFrom the Print Menu, enter <F1> to get the list of áprinters. áUse ì
the áarrow keys to position the cursor over the EpsonLQ printer and áthen ì
hit the <ENTER> key.
5) áFrom the Print Menu select the File option. At the áprompt á"Print ì
FILE name:"enter a filename with the ".ECL" file extension. Store the ECL ì
file in your C:\Word directory or C:\hqfax.
6) Exit MS-Word, run the HQFAX command, identify the ECL file that you ì
wish to convert, and enter the other conversion parameters as well.
PRODUCING EPSON PRINT FILES FROM MICROSOFT WORKS 2.0
1) First, be sure that you have an EPSONLQ PRD file installed in áyour
irectory. This may require you to find your print driver ádisì
kette from your MS-Works diskettes.
2) If you have not done so, create your MS-Works document using all of ì
the features of the Epson LQ-510 printer.
3) áFrom within MS-Works, enter <Alt P> to select the Print Menu. áUse ì
the arrow keys to select the Printer Setup option. Hit <ENTER>.
4) áUse áthe arrow keys to position the cursor in áthe áprinter ámodel ì
options. Select the EPSON LQ-510.
5) áEnter á<Alt áP> to select the Print Menu. Use the áarrow ákeys áto ì
select áthe áPrint a File option. Enter 'F' to print to a file. áEnter áa ì
filename áwith áthe á".ECL" file extension. Store the ECL áfile áin áyour ì
C:\Works directory or C:\hqfax.
6) Enter <Alt F> to select the File Menu. Exit MS-Works.
7) áRun áthe áHQFAX command, identify the ECL file that áyou áwish áto ì
convert, and enter the other conversion parameters as well.
There áapparently is no capability within MS-Works to ácustomize áyour ì
printer driver. This means that the custom print controls documented in ì
the following section will not be available to you. You will not be áable ì
to produce over-sized characters. Sorry folks!
PRODUCING EPSON PRINT FILES FROM WORDPERFECT 5.1
1) First, be sure that you have an EPSONLQ PRS file installed in your WordPerfect
directory. This may require you to find your print driver diskette from your MS-
WordPerfect diskettes.
2) If you have not done so, create your WordPerfect document using all of
the features of the Epson-LQ printer. Find the Printer Commands section
in the WordPerfect for DOS Reference manual, pages 405,6. Study this
section to learn how to insert the HQFAX Custom Print controls into your
WordPerfect document to produce oversized characters.
3) From the WordPerfect main menu, enter <Shift>F7 to select the print menu. From
the Print menu, enter 'S' to select a printer. Use the arrow keys to position
the cursor to the Epson LQ-510. Enter 'E' to edit the printer selection. Enter
'P' to modify the printer port. Use the arrow keys to position the cursor over
the selection OTHER. Now enter the name of the disk file that WordPerfect
will print to. Remember the ".ECL" file extension. Store the ECL file in your
C:\WP directory or C:\hqfax.
4) From the WordPerfect main menu, print the current document to the .ECL file.
5) Exit WordPerfect, run the HQFAX command, identify the ECL file that you wish
to convert, and enter the other conversion parameters as well.
PRODUCING EPSON PRINT FILES FROM WORDSTAR 5.0
1) If you have not done so, create your WordStar document using all of the
features of an Epson-LQ printer. You will need to have set up a PDF for an
EPSON-LQ printer. This PDF should write to a disk file. Find the Custom
Print Controls section in your WordStar Reference manual, page 30. Study this
section to be able to insert the HQFAX Custom Print Controls into your
WordStar document to make oversized characters.
2) From the WordStar main menu, enter <Alt F> to display the File Menu. Use the
arrow keys to select the Print option.
3) From the Print Setup screen, hit the <ENTER> key continuously until the cursor
is in the printer field. Use the arrow keys to select the EPSONLQ printer from
the directory of printers below. You should have a PDF set up for an EPSON LQ-500
printer to write to a disk file.
4) Hit the <ENTER> key until the cursor is in the field "Redirect to output port".
Enter the filename with the ".ECL" file extension. Store the ECL file in your
C:\WordStar directory or C:\hqfax.
5) Exit WordStar, run the HQFAX command, identify the ECL file that you
wish to convert, and enter the other conversion parameters as well.
Producing EPSON Print Files from Windows Applications
To use HQFAX with any Windows application, you must select an EPSON 24 pin

4) From the list of available printers in the pull-down menu, select
an EPSON-LQ.
5) From the Printer pull-down menu, select Printer Setup.
6) Click on the Connect button. From the pull-down menu of output devices,
choose "On File". This will redirect Epson-LQ printer output to a disk
file which you will name when you are ready to print the document.
7) Inside the Printer Setup panel, make sure that this is the active
Your áEpson 24 pin printer is now active and you can print your ádocuì
ment áusing áthe Print option of the File pull-down ámenu. áWhen áyou ì
select áthe print option, Windows will prompt you for an áoutput áfile ì
name. Enter a filename with the .ECL file extension so that HQFAX can ì
find it. Now you are ready to convert and FAX the document. You áneed ì
not áexit Windows! Simply exit your word processor, go to the áProgram ì
Manager window and click on the DOS prompt. You can run HQFAX to
convert and send your document from the DOS prompt within Windows.
There áapparently áis no capability within áMS-Windows áto ácustomize ì
your Epson printer driver. This means that the custom print controls ì
documented áin the following section will not be available áto áyou. ì
You will not be able to produce over-sized characters with the Windows ì
printer ádriver. If you wish to make use of the áOver-sized ácharacters, ì
you ámust áinstall the EPSON-LQ printer driver provided with áyour áword ì
processor áif áavailable. áYou will need to customize it áby áadding áthe ì
Special áPrint Controls listed below. Consult the user manual áfor áyour ì
word áprocessor áfor specific information about ácreating áCustom áPrint ì
Controls.
Using Various Type Sizes
The fancier EPSON-LQ printers provide for a range of type sizes from á8 ì
points áto á32 ápoints. HQ-FAX faithfully áinterprets áthe áEPSON-LQ ì
printer commands which alter the pitch and point-size of the ácharì
acters to be printed (or FAXed). If you have a print driver with your ì
word áprocessor áfor áan EPSON ESC/P2 printer, you will ábe áable áto ì
produce the range of type sizes mentioned above, directly from your áword ì
processor.
The áEPSON ESC/P2 printers are: ActionPrinter 5000, LQ-570, LQ-870, áLQ-ì
1070 áand LQ-1170. IF you do not have a print driver available for áone ì
of the above listed printers, you will appreciate the following.
Epson Custom Print Controls
HQ-FAX offers a few Custom Print Controls to enhance the FAX images. The ì
specifics áof áproducing these Custom Print Controls áwithin ádocuments ì
varies áfrom one word processor to another. Please see the section áProì
ducing áEpson Print Files for information regarding having your áword ì
processor áproduce Custom Print Controls that work together áproperly ì
with HQ-FAX.
The Custom Print Controls offered by HQFAX are:
<Cntl>E (hex 05) This control code indicates Double-size characters to
t is a toggle switch, meaning that the first occurrence of
<Cntl>E turns on Oversize and the next occurrence turns it off.
<Cntl>F (hex 06) This control code indicates Triple size characters to
HQFAX. It is a toggle switch as well. The first occurrence of <Cntl>F
turns on Triple-size, the next turns it off.
<Cntl>G (hex 07) This control code indicates ~Quad~ sized characters to
HQFAX. It too is a toggle switch, The first occurrence of <Cntl>G ì
turns on Quad-size, the next turns it off.
<Cntl>Q (hex 11) This control code indicates Double-Height characters to ì
HQ-FAX áIt too is toggle switch, meaning that the first occurrence áof ì
<Cntl>Q turns on Double-Height,the next turns it off.
<Cntl>W (hex 17) This control code indicates Double-Wide characters to
HQFAX. It too is a toggle switch. The first occurrence of <Cntl>^W
turns on Double-wide, the next turns it off.
When áusing these features, the user must account for the fact áthat ì
the áover-sized characters are taller and/or wider than ánormal ácharacì
ters, and format the page accordingly. When your word processor puts a ì
page ánumber or footnote at the bottom of a page, HQFAX will ádo áthe ì
courtesy of removing whitespace near the bottom of the page in order áto ì
make room for the page number or footnote.
