README file for HomeFiler(tm), Version 2.0
Copyright (c) 1994 by Applied Software Innovations
This document contains important upgrade information for users
of HomeFiler version 1, as well as any significant changes made
after the user's guide and reference manual went to print.
========================< UPGRADING FROM VERSION 1 >========================
HomeFiler Version 2 will automatically detect the presence of version 1
databases (in the same directory) and will prompt you for permission to
upgrade them. In doing so, it will rename their file extensions from "dbf"
to "v1x" before asking you if they can be removed (when finished). If you
decide to keep them around (as a backup precaution), you can always remove
them manually at some later date. You MUST allow HomeFiler to upgrade any
version 1 databases (if present) before you can use it. Please be advised
of the following:
o Appointments and To-Do lists are now handled through the new Date Books
facility. Due to the significant changes involved, any existing entries
from version 1 cannot and WILL NOT be preserved.
o Special Dates entries are now subordinate to the new Date Books facility.
To preserve any version 1 data, Date Books will be established for each
individual version 1 Special Dates category. The entries themselves will
be accessible via the <Special...> command button of the respective date
book.
o The Work Experience and Education menu selections have been relocated to
the Personal/Family menu. The Work/School menu has been dropped.
o Recipe ingredients are now managed as 3-part "quantity, measure, descrip-
tion" entries to facilitate recipe batching. Version 1 recipe ingredients
will be moved into the new "description" column of the version 2 recipe
ingredients lists for preservation. You will need to edit (change) these
lists for your existing recipes by separating out the "quantity" and
"measure" parts. (Please refer to the Reference manual for additional
details.)
o Address book enhancements include separate fields for first and last
names. Version 1 names will be moved into the last name field. You may
want to revise (change) them by moving appropriate elements to the first
name field for each address record.
(We apologize for any inconvenience you may incur with regard to the above.)
=================< DOCUMENTATION CHANGES & ADDITIONS >======================
DATE RANGES
-----------
o Date From/To Range specification for certain specific reports has been
integrated into the main print dialog rather than being a separate dialog
window.
LABEL PRINTING
--------------
o Label print alignments are based on the following page layout parameters:
6 lines per inch (i.e. 66 lines per page; not just 60!)
12 characters per inch (i.e. 12 pitch, 10 point, 96 characters per line)
If you are using a different layout, such as 10 cpi (i.e. 12 pt) at 80
characters per line, you may need to adjust either your printer's page
layout, or use slightly different alignment values from the default ones
we have provided (in which case some trial-and-error may be involved to
get the desired results). Changing the pitch and line spacing values in
the "Settings" dialog may also be helpful (see below).
SETTINGS DIALOG
----------------------------
o Default pitch (10, 12, or 17) and line spacing (6 or 8) values have been
added for user profiles in support of label printing alignments. Some
printers "power on" at 10 pitch (80 characters per line), while others do
so at 12 pitch (96 characters per line). HomeFiler uses these values to
"scale and position" the printable areas (label width, height, spacing,
etc.) accordingly to better facilitate your printing environment.
CREDIT CARD REPORTS
---------------------------
o Individual credit card transaction types (TT) are abbreviated on the
credit card reports using 2-character identifiers as follows:
PU Purchase
CA Cash Advance
FC Finance Charge
PA Payment
CR Credit
LC Late Charge
DA Debit Adjustment
==========================< UPCOMING FEATURES >=============================
o HomeFiler development continues! Features and enhancements planned for
the next release include two very important ones:
- Built-in Backup and Restore for HomeFiler databases (with automatic
compression and decompression)
- Comprehensive Data Import & Export features, including support for
GEDCOM (for family genealogies) and Mail-Merge file formats (for your
address lists).
