  2.                README file for HomeFiler(tm), Version 2.0

  6.      This document contains important upgrade information for users
  7.      of HomeFiler version 1, as well as any significant changes made 
  8.      after the user's guide and reference manual went to print.
  9.  
  10. ========================< UPGRADING FROM VERSION 1 >========================
  11.  
  12.  HomeFiler Version 2 will automatically detect the presence of version 1
  13.  databases (in the same directory) and will prompt you for permission to
  14.  upgrade them. In doing so, it will rename their file extensions from "dbf"
  15.  to "v1x" before asking you if they can be removed (when finished). If you
  16.  decide to keep them around (as a backup precaution), you can always remove
  17.  them manually at some later date. You MUST allow HomeFiler to upgrade any
  18.  version 1 databases (if present) before you can use it. Please be advised
  19.  of the following:
  20.  
  21. o  Appointments and To-Do lists are now handled through the new Date Books
  22.    facility. Due to the significant changes involved, any existing entries
  23.    from version 1 cannot and WILL NOT be preserved.
  24.  
  25. o  Special Dates entries are now subordinate to the new Date Books facility.
  26.    To preserve any version 1 data, Date Books will be established for each
  27.    individual version 1 Special Dates category. The entries themselves will
  28.    be accessible via the <Special...> command button of the respective date
  29.    book.
  30.  
  31. o  The Work Experience and Education menu selections have been relocated to
  32.    the Personal/Family menu. The Work/School menu has been dropped.
  33.  
  34. o  Recipe ingredients are now managed as 3-part "quantity, measure, descrip-
  35.    tion" entries to facilitate recipe batching. Version 1 recipe ingredients
  36.    will be moved into the new "description" column of the version 2 recipe
  37.    ingredients lists for preservation. You will need to edit (change) these
  38.    lists for your existing recipes by separating out the "quantity" and
  39.    "measure" parts. (Please refer to the Reference manual for additional
  40.    details.)

  42. o  Address book enhancements include separate fields for first and last
  43.    names. Version 1 names will be moved into the last name field. You may
  44.    want to revise (change) them by moving appropriate elements to the first
  45.    name field for each address record.

  49. =================< DOCUMENTATION CHANGES & ADDITIONS >======================

  51. DATE RANGES
  52. -----------
  53. o  Date From/To Range specification for certain specific reports has been
  54.    integrated into the main print dialog rather than being a separate dialog
  55.    window.

  57. LABEL PRINTING
  58. --------------
  59. o  Label print alignments are based on the following page layout parameters:
  60.  
  61.     6 lines per inch       (i.e. 66 lines per page; not just 60!)
  62.    12 characters per inch  (i.e. 12 pitch, 10 point, 96 characters per line)
  63.  
  64.    If you are using a different layout, such as 10 cpi (i.e. 12 pt) at 80
  65.    characters per line, you may need to adjust either your printer's page
  66.    layout, or use slightly different alignment values from the default ones
  67.    we have provided (in which case some trial-and-error may be involved to
  68.    get the desired results). Changing the pitch and line spacing values in
  69.    the "Settings" dialog may also be helpful (see below).

  71. SETTINGS DIALOG
  72. ----------------------------
  73. o  Default pitch (10, 12, or 17) and line spacing (6 or 8) values have been
  74.    added for user profiles in support of label printing alignments. Some
  75.    printers "power on" at 10 pitch (80 characters per line), while others do
  76.    so at 12 pitch (96 characters per line). HomeFiler uses these values to
  77.    "scale and position" the printable areas (label width, height, spacing,
  78.    etc.) accordingly to better facilitate your printing environment.

  80. CREDIT CARD REPORTS
  81. ---------------------------
  82. o  Individual credit card transaction types (TT) are abbreviated on the
  83.    credit card reports using 2-character identifiers as follows:

  86.                            CA   Cash Advance
  87.                            FC   Finance Charge
  88.                            PA   Payment
  89.                            CR   Credit
  90.                            LC   Late Charge
  91.                            DA   Debit Adjustment
