--- Shareware Concept:
Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before buying it.
If you try a Shareware program and continue using it, you are expected to
register. Individual programs differ on details -- some request registration
while others require it, some specify a maximum trial period. With
registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue using the
software to a myriad of benefits.
Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software, and the
copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific exceptions as stated
below. Shareware authors are accomplished programmers, just like commercial
authors, and the programs are of comparable quality. (In both cases, there
are good programs and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of
distribution. The author specifically grants the right to copy and distribute
the software, either to all and sundry or to a specific group. For example,
some authors require written permission before a commercial disk vendor may
copy their Shareware.
Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You should find
software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether it's commercial or
Shareware. The Shareware system makes fitting your needs easier, because you
can try before you buy. And because the overhead is low, prices are low also.
Shareware has the ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the
product, you don't pay for it.
--- Disclaimer / Agreement
Users of Contact Scheduler 4 must accept this disclaimer of warranty:
Contact Scheduler 4 is supplied as is. The author disclaims all warranties,
expressed or implied, including, without limitation, the warranties of
merchantability and of fitness for any purpose. The author assumes no
liability for damages, direct or consequential, which may result from the
use of Contact Scheduler.
Contact Scheduler 4 is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge to
the user for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your friends, but please
do not give it away altered or as part of another system. The essence of
"user-supported" software is to provide personal computer users with quality
software without high prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to
continue to develop new products. If you find this program useful and find
that you are using Contact Scheduler and continue to use it after a 30 day
trial period, you must make a registration payment to DataTek Computer
Services.
Commercial users of Contact Scheduler 4 must register and pay for their copies
of Contact Scheduler 4 within 30 days of first use or their license is
withdrawn. Site-License arrangements may be made by contacting DataTek Computer
Services.
Anyone distributing Contact Manger 4 for any kind of remuneration must first
contact DataTek Computer Services at the address below for authorization.
This authorization will be automatically granted to distributors recognized
by the (ASP) as adhering to its guidelines for shareware distributors, and
such distributors may begin offering Contact Scheduler 4 immediately. However
DataTek must still be advised so that the distributor can be kept up-to-date
with the latest version of Contact Scheduler 4.
You are encouraged to pass a copy of Contact Scheduler 4 along to your friends
for evaluation. Please encourage them to register their copy if they find
that they can use it. All registered users will receive a copy of the latest
version of Contact Scheduler 4 along with other benefits described below.
--- ASP Ombudsman Statement:
"This program is produced by DataTek Computer Services, a member of the
Association of Shareware Professionals (ASP). ASP wants to make sure that
the shareware principle works for you. If you are unable to resolve a
shareware-related problem with an ASP member by contacting the member
directly, ASP may be able to help. The ASP Ombudsman can help you resolve a
dispute or problem with an ASP member, but does not provide technical support
for members' products. Please write to the ASP Ombudsman at 545 Grover
Road, Muskegon, MI 49442 or send a CompuServe message via CompuServe Mail to
ASP Ombudsman 70007,3536."
--Convert:
WE STRONGLY SUGGEST YOU BACKUP YOUR FILES BEFORE RUNNING THE CONVERT UTILITY.
The conversion program 'CONVERT.EXE' is enclosed with the CS4 distribution
file. You may use this program to convert previous Contact Scheduler data and
index files to the new version 4.15 format.
Start the program by typing CONVERT and press 'ENTER'
Enter the Drive, Path and Filename to be converted. The Contact Scheduler
database filename is DATA.DAT. Your old Contact Scheduler database (DATA.DAT)
and it's index file (INDEX.DAT) should be in the same directory.
When you press 'ENTER', CONVERT will be the conversion process.
Timing results on a 386DX/40 with 8 Mb memory running Qualitas 386MAX
memory manager:
Convert 1552 records - 23 minutes
Convert 24621 records - HOURS and HOURS
Size Changes 24621 record database
Old Contact Scheduler New Contact Scheduler
DATA.DAT file 42,914,403 bytes 69,037,284 bytes
INDEX.DAT file 350 bytes 0 bytes - deleted
GROUP.IDX file 0 bytes 350 bytes
SRCH.IDX file 0 bytes 6,672,291 bytes
TAG.IDX 0 bytes 49,242 bytes
This is not a fast process, blank records are deleted, new index files are
created, and the files are converted to the new database format.
CONVERT will keep you advised of where it is in it's process and will reindex
the new data and index files after conversion. When it's done your old data
files will be gone and the new data files will be in place and you will be
ready to use CS4.
The program will take the various .APT files and combine them into the new
CS.DAT file and WILL DELETE the .APT files after the converion is complete.
You can run CONVERT from your current Contact Scheduler directory.
You need to make sure you have enough room on your hard drive to hold the
existing CS data files and the NEW CS4 data files. During the process both
files will exist on your hard drive for a short period of time.
WE STRONGLY SUGGEST YOU BACKUP YOUR FILES BEFORE RUNNING THE CONVERT UTILITY.
