READ THIS ENTIRE DOCUMENT: It contains important information!
This is an unregistered evaluation version of Capital Gainz if it was
obtained from a shareware disk vendor, an electronic bulletin board,
or a source other than AlleyCat Software, Inc. and David Lee Cohen; or
during program sign-on the phrase "shareware" or "evaluation" is
displayed. Otherwise, this is a registered version of Capital Gainz,
purchased by and registered to you. If this is an evaluation version
of Capital Gainz, after installation refer to the document LICENSE.DOC
for details on the evaluation version's restrictions and for
information on ordering a registered version of Capital Gainz. Also
included in LICENSE.DOC is a list of what you get with registration.
Please note that we receive no part of any fee charged by disk vendors
or sysops for the evaluation version.

Distribution, Registration:
---------------------------
Distribution restrictions are detailed in the VENDOR.DOC file.
Registration requirements are discussed in LICENSE.DOC. This software
is not public domain, and failure to abide by the distribution
restrictions constitutes a violation of the U.S. and International
Copyright laws.
Upgrading to a New Revision or
Converting to a Registered Version
-----------------------------------
If you already have a version of Capital Gainz installed, install the
new version in the same directory. Only program and documentation
files will be overwritten. Existing data files may be upgraded, but
will otherwise not be affected.
Sometimes, a change in file formats requires an upgrade of existing
data files. If this is the case, the upgrade function of the Capital
Gainz Utility Program will be invoked automatically during
installation. IF YOU ARE UPGRADING, YOU SHOULD INSTALL THE NEW VERSION
IN THE DIRECTORY CONTAINING THE OLD PROGRAM FILES. When attempting to
run a new version of Capital Gainz against old data files that were
not upgraded, you may receive the error "Invalid Record Declaration"
when running Capital Gainz. If you experience this problem, run the
Capital Gainz Utility Program to upgrade your data files.
YOU CAN ONLY INSTALL A NEW REGISTERED VERSION OVER AN OLD EVALUATION
OR REGISTERED VERSION. DO NOT INSTALL A NEW EVALUATION VERSION OVER AN
OLD EXISTING VERSION.
The HISTORY.DOC file contains a list of major changes between
revisions of Capital Gainz.
Prepare for Installation
------------------------
You should have one or more diskettes containing the following:
For Capital Gainz:
- INSTALL.EXE, INSTALL.INF, INSTALL.HLP, WINSTALL.EXE, README.DOC
- CGZCD32.EXE - Documentation archive
- CGZCL32.EXE - Runtime library archive
- CGZCP32.EXE - Capital Gainz Program archive
- CGZCT32.EXE - Demo/tutorial archive
- CGZCX32.EXE - Example data archive
For the Utility Program:
- CGZUD32.EXE - Utility Program document archive
- CGZUP32.EXE - Utility Program archive
For the Graphics Program:
- CGZGD32.EXE - Graphics Program document archive
- CGZGP32.EXE - Graphics Program archive
For the Download Program:
- CGZDD32.EXE - Download Program document archive
- CGZDP32.EXE - Download Program archive
- CGZDS32.EXE - Download Program script archive
For BBS distribution, the archives are combined into a ZIP file which
must be decompressed to a diskette or directory on your hard drive
prior to installation.
Installation
------------
To install Capital Gainz, execute INSTALL.EXE. For instance, if you
inserted the Install disk into drive A, type:
C:>A:INSTALL
You will be prompted for the necessary information, and any
directories requested will be created if they do not exist. Online
help is available by hitting the F1 key. You'll be prompted to insert
disks as needed. After installation, the new Capital Gainz directory
will be your current working directory. Detailed information on the
installation process is included in the User's Manual.
Common installation problems include: bad diskettes, corrupt data
caused by electronic transmission errors, and incorrect composition of
the archives on the diskettes. The result of these kinds of problems
are installation errors indicating: invalid archive, invalid archive
format, or disk read errors. If you run into a similar problem,
contact your original source for a replacement. If you encounter
problems getting a replacement, contact us directly and let us know
where you obtained your copy.
"Can't Execute CGINST.BAT"
--------------------------
This is a common error caused by trying to install Capital Gainz on a
computer that was booted from a floppy disk. The installation program
creates a batch file to unarchive the Capital Gainz files, then
'shells' to DOS to execute it. If the command processor (COMMAND.COM)
was on a floppy disk that was swapped out, then the process will fail.
You should try to install and run Capital Gainz on a computer with DOS
installed on the hard disk. If you can't, you can exit from the
installation program after seeing this error, and run the batch file
manually:
C:>CD \CAPGNZ
C:>CGINST
Documentation
-------------
After installation is complete, these important Capital Gainz
documents will be on your disk:
LICENSE.DOC - the license agreement and information on ordering
the registered version of Capital Gainz.
CGnn.DOC - Chapter 'nn' of the Capital Gainz user's manual, used
for online, context-sensitive help.
You can view or print the documentation from within Capital Gainz
using the View Documentation option from the Main Menu.
Getting Started
---------------
Before entering your own data, I strongly recommend that you run the
Demo/Tutorial screen show. To run it, you must be in the
drive/directory where the screen libraries (CGSCR*.LBR) are located.
For example, if the demo is in \CAPGNZ\DEMO on drive C:
C:>CD \CAPGNZ\DEMO
C:>CGDEMO
The demo works best on EGA/VGA color monitors. For others, highlighted
fields may not show up.
The demo/tutorial files consume considerable disk space. To remove
them when you're done:
C:> CD \CAPGNZ
C:> DEL DEMO\*.*
C:> RMDIR DEMO
In the Graphics Program part of the demo, several PCX graphics files
can be displayed. However, the graphics images included with the demo
will only work on VGA monitors.
Running Capital Gainz
---------------------
Be sure to refer to the LICENSE.DOC file for usage and distribution
guidelines. To start up Capital Gainz:
C:>CD \CAPGNZ
C:>CG
Backing Up Data
---------------
You really should regularly backup your Capital Gainz data files, as
data is easily corrupted by disk errors or misbehaved applications.
There is even a Backup option on the Main Menu to make this process
easy. The data files are backed up are: *.DAT and *.K01.
Enhancements
------------
Capital Gainz is constantly being enhanced. My goal is to put out a
release every 6-9 months, with every other one being a 'major' release
with significant new features. Registered users are notified of
updates, and can receive the upgrade for a small fee. I don't want
anyone getting the impression that these frequent updates are meant to
just increase revenues. Rather, I feel an obligation to offer the best
product possible to those who have supported me in the past.
If You Like It
--------------
If you like Capital Gainz, let me know. Also, pass along any
suggestions - many features added over the years originated from user
feedback. If friends or co-workers are interested, tell them to
contact me and I'll send them a free evaluation copy of Capital Gainz.
Of course, any mention of Capital Gainz in correspondence to magazines
or newspapers is greatly encouraged and appreciated. Finally, if
you're interested, I'm always looking for volunteers to try out new
features in pre-releases of Capital Gainz.
Documentation Changes
---------------------
A 'Change Source' function is shown in some Download and Graphics
Program documentation. This feature was dropped at the last
minute.
Return of principal distributions were changed to allow 'uneven'
amounts applied to different open records. This removes the
restriction that all open records must have at least the per
share amount recorded. Also, if the total return of principal
recorded exceeds the available basis, short and/or long term
capital gains distributions are recorded for the excess. Also,
deleting return of principal distributions no longer supports
open amount adjustments, because of the potential for uneven per
share amounts across different records.
In the Compuserve download script, \CAPGNZ\DNLD\CGCOMP.SCR, some
users hang up at the initial menu, and you may need to add this
line before ::ELOGON:
<<!
Telechart 2000 data can be restricted by date and security. If
CURRENT prices are chosen, only the prices for the specified date
are read in. Otherwise, the FROM DATE and TO DATE restrict the
price data.
In the Download Program, you are assumed to use full, 80
character length lines when communicating with services. If, for
instance, you have your terminal characteristics set up for 40
character lines with Compuserve, downloaded BasicQuotes are
generated in a format that the Download Program's conversion
utility will not understand. To change terminal characteristics,
use the communication service's setup facility - in Compuserve,
you can get there with GO PROFILE.
Although stock quote downloads are supported, you should avoid
accumulating large amounts of price data. Capital Gainz is an
investment management tool, not a technical analysis tool, and is
not optimized to handle large amounts of price data quickly. I
suggest weekly price updates at the most. If you must pull in
daily data, at least use the Utility Program's Rebuild Price
History to occasionally weed out prices to a weekly or monthly
frequency.
The Download Program supports non-standard IRQ and port addresses
through the \CAPGNZ\DNLD\CGDNLD.IRQ file. You can create this
text file with any editor. Add one or more comma-delimited
records in this format:
PORT,IRQ,ADDRESS
So, if you use COM2 (standard IRQ 3, address 2F8), but it uses
the IRQ and address normally used for COM1 (IRQ 4, address 3F8):
2,4,1016
Note that the address must be decimal, not hexadecimal.
The Download Program defaults to touchtone dialing, using the 'AT
DT' modem command. You can switch to pulse dialing by creating
the file \CAPGNZ\DNLD\CGDNLD.MDM, and defining the dialing
command:
D=AT DP
For Prodigy, you can now set the Download Program to create and
download Quote Tracks, or to just download existing Quote Tracks.
If you have a lot of symbols that you regularly retrieve quotes
for, use CGPRODC.SCR to create Quote Tracks for the first time,
or to recreate them after adding/changing/deleting symbols in the
Download Program. Then, use CGPRODX.SCR to use existing Quote
Tracks, skipping the Prodigy commands to create new ones.
When requesting Historical quotes in Compuserve, always retrieve
quotes for more than a single day. When just one day's quotes are
requested in MQDATA and read into a DIF file, the format is
completely different than in all other cases, and the Download
Program does not recognize it. This is just a Compuserve anomaly.
Capital Gainz can not automate price retrieval from
Prodigy/Windows. To get prices, manually retrieve prices into
COMMA-DELIMITED file. Then, use the Download Program's
Convert/Input option to read the file(s) in.
Prodigy does not care a bit about 3rd party products such as the
Download program. They change the service whenever the urge hits.
This has broken the Download Program's scripts 6 times from 9/93
to 1/94. If you use automated downloads from Prodigy, get used to
retrieving updated scripts from our BBS. Also, you are encouraged
to send nasty email to Prodigy support about this.
The Download Program can now Convert/Input downloaded COMMA-
DELIMITED Prodigy files in either CLOSING or CURRENT price
format.
The Download Program can now Convert/Input price files from
America Online. If you are installing the Download Program for
the first time, then the AOL service will be defined in the
Services file. Otherwise, you'll need to add the AOL service in
the Download Program:
Accept all the default file names that will be displayed
after you enter AOL as the service - these should be
CGAOL.TIC for Ticker Symbol File, CGAOL.DNL for Download
Data File, CGAOL.INP for Final Input Data File, and
CGAOL.PAR for Parameter File. The Download Script File is
not used.
For the Conversion Program, specify CGCV.EXE, which has been
updated to support AOL conversion.
Note that the Download Program does not automate access of
America Online - it simply allows you to convert and read in
files created from their portfolio management features. Thus, use
option 3 on the Download Program's Main Menu, and specify CURRENT
prices. The downloaded data does not include dates, so the Price
Date on the Main Menu is used.
