=================================================================
DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE
Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software be-
fore buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue us-
ing it, you are expected to register. Individual programs differ
on details--some request registration while others require it,
some specify a maximum trial period. With registration, you get
anything from the simple right to continue using the software to
an updated program with printed manual.
Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software,
and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished
programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are
of comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs
and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of distribu-
tion. The author specifically grants the right to copy and dis-
tribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a specific
group. For example, some authors require written permission be-
fore a commercial disk vendor may copy their Shareware.
Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook, wheth-
er it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes fit-
ting your needs easier, because you can try before you buy. And
because the overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware has
the ultimate money-back guarantee--if you don't use the product,
you don't pay for it.
BIBLE MARATHON is a "shareware program" and is provided at no
charge to the user for evaluation. Feel free to share it with
your friends, but please do not give it away altered or as part
of another system. The essence of "user-supported" software is
to provide personal computer users with quality software without
high prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to con-
- Page 2 -
tinue to develop new products. If you find this program useful
and find that you are using BIBLE MARATHON and continue to use
BIBLE MARATHON after a reasonable trial period, you must make a
registration payment to the author. (Please see registration op-
tions below.) The registration fee will license one copy for use
on any one computer at any one time. You must treat this soft-
ware just like a book. An example is that this software may be
used by any number of people and may be freely moved from one
computer location to another, so long as there is no possibility
of it being used at one location while it's being used at another
(just as a book cannot be read by two different persons at the
same time).
Commercial users of BIBLE MARATHON must register and pay for
their copies of BIBLE MARATHON within 30 days of first use or
their license is withdrawn. Site-License arrangements may be
made by contacting the author.
Anyone distributing BIBLE MARATHON for any kind of remuneration
must first contact the author at the address below for authoriza-
tion. This authorization will be automatically granted to dis-
tributors recognized by the ASP as adhering to its guidelines for
shareware distributors, and such distributors may begin offering
BIBLE MARATHON immediately (However the author must still be ad-
vised so that the distributor can be kept up-to-date with the
latest version of BIBLE MARATHON.) BIBLE MARATHON (including
Marathon Data Base and associated files) may be duplicated and
distributed for a fee (including postage and handling charges)
not to exceed $10 per disk.
You are encouraged to pass along a copy of BIBLE MARATHON to your
friends for evaluation. Please encourage them to register their
copy if they find that they can use it.
All registered users will receive a copy of the latest version of
the program, WITH YOUR NAME AND REGISTRATION NUMBER ON THE PRO-
GRAM(S)'S OPENING SCREEN(S). IN ADDITION, YOU WILL RECEIVE THE
CURRENT MASTER DATA BASE, ALONG WITH PROGRAM FILES (IF UPDATED
FROM THE VERSION YOU HAVE).

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT BIBLE MARATHON
BIBLE MARATHON has been developed with the prayerful objective of
teaching the eternal truths of the Word of God. Rather than a
Bible TEACHING program, though, it is really an interactive Bible
LEARNING program. Jesus commanded that we "Search the Scrip-
tures" to learn that they testify of Him (John 5:39). Paul com-
manded Timothy to "Study to show thyself approved unto God, a
workman that needeth not to be ashamed" (II Tim. 2:15). BIBLE
MARATHON can help make Bible study more interesting and profita-
ble. Not intended to replace Bible reading and more conventional
forms of Bible study, it is hoped, rather, that BIBLE MARATHON
will be used to supplement other Bible learning activities and
make the Bible, the most fascinating Book ever written, more ea-
gerly studied and applied to life.
- Page 5 -
The author is a pastor with 13 years in the pastoral ministry.
He has four children, who have been his greatest earthly inspira-
tion for writing BIBLE MARATHON. He has a technical background,
having served as a Radarman in the U.S. Navy, and has maintained
an active interest in electronics and computers, especially in
computer programming. He has a B.A. degree from Judson College
in Elgin, Illinois and an M.Div. degree from Trinity Evangelical
Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois.
Please share with the author any suggestions you have for improv-
ing the program or adding to its features.
To derive the greatest benefit and pleasure from BIBLE MARATHON,
please read the instructions and suggestions which follow. God
bless you as you run the race of life for His glory!

If you are just beginning play, you cannot exit from this menu.
You must make a choice, or Exit Marathon. However, after you
have begun play you can exit the menu without making a choice by
pressing the Escape Key. When you choose
Begin New Game
a prompt box will appear in the lower right corner of the Player
Progress Screen with the words: "Number of Players (1 to 4)?"

- Page 8 -
Choose Subject.
This selection will pop up the SUBJECT MENU in the lower right
corner of the PLAYING SCREEN (right side of PLAYER PROGRESS
SCREEN). You can limit what kinds of questions to display by
making a choice:
Facts From Bible
Books Of Bible
Verses Of Bible
All Of Above
"All of Above" is already selected and is the default subject se-
lection for the game. This choice uses all of the questions in
the MASTR.DAT file. (The MASTR.DAT file is the Master Question
Data Base file.)
(Note again that you must make a selection from the Subject Menu.
If you want to go back to the PLAY MENU, just press the Enter
key. From there you can Exit Marathon or make another selection.)
After you make a subject selection, you'll return to the PLAY
MENU, where "Begin New Game" will be selected. Press the Enter
Key and you'll be prompted for "Number of Players" and "Player #
Name." If you want BIBLE MARATHON to keep track of your score,
then you must enter your name (up to eight letters). Or, if you
want, you can simply press enter at the name prompt(s) and the
play will begin.
(TO REFER TO A PLAYER, IN THE REMAINDER OF THIS MANUAL THE PRO-
NOUN "HE" WILL BE USED FOR THE SAKE OF CONVENIENCE. PLAYERS, OF
COURSE, CAN BE OF EITHER SEX.)
You'll see a question in the top QUESTION SCREEN, with four pos-
sible answers listed after the letters A-D. The cursor will be
blinking in the space after the "Enter your answer:" prompt.
Player 1 will enter the letter he thinks is correct. Immediately
the computer will evaluate the answer and indicate whether the
answer is correct or incorrect. For correct answers footsteps
will appear after the player's number which will grow in length
with each successive correct answer. For multiple players the
next player number will be highlighted. The next question will
be displayed in the QUESTION SCREEN.
=================================================================
How Questions Are Selected and Displayed
Questions are selected at random from the data base file selected
from the SUBJECT MENU. (MASTR.DAT is the default file.) The
"Record No.___", which appears in the upper left border of the
QUESTION SCREEN, is the number in the MASTR.DAT file for that
question. Each question and its answers, along with the correct
answer, the Bible reference, and subject code, is a fixed length
record in a random access file. This record can be accessed by
the BIBLE MARATHON Data Base Program. If you plan to edit the
question data base, please see the section below on "BIBLE MARA-
THON Data Base Program."
- Page 9 -
UNLESS YOU HAVE PROGRAMMING EXPERIENCE, PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT TO
EDIT THE DATA BASE FILES, EXCEPT BY USING THE BIBLE MARATHON DATA
BASE PROGRAM. THE QUESTIONS WILL NOT BE PROPERLY DISPLAYED, AND
THE BIBLE MARATHON PROGRAM WILL NOT WORK PROPERLY, IF THE DATA
BASE FILES ARE NOT CORRECTLY EDITED.
=================================================================
Game Objective
Objective of the game is to cross the finish line (on the right
side of the PLAYER PROGRESS SCREEN. When the first player cross-

a player, whose turn it is, wants to see the Bible verse or Bible
Books before answering the question, he or she can press

PLAYER CHOOSES TO DISPLAY BIBLE BEFORE ANSWERING QUESTION, HE
FORFEITS HIS TURN. WHEN HE RETURNS TO THE QUESTION SCREEN, A NEW
QUESTION IS DISPLAYED AND THE NEXT PLAYER NUMBER IS HIGHLIGHTED.

sound. Then, a prompt will appear at the bottom of the screen in
the MESSAGE BAR area ask the player to press

key. When you return to the play screen, same player may resume
with the same question without penalty.

in the order in which they enter their names. After the name
will be each player's score. Scores are entered when a player
completes a game. Games can be for 1 to 4 players, however play-
ers must complete game in order for a score to be registered.
Scores are calculated by the following formula:
* Winner's score is double the final percentage of correct
answers.
* Others who finish a game but don't cross the finish line
will be awarded their final percentage.
* Current (complete) game score will be added to previous
total.
* NO SCORE WILL BE TALLIED IF A GAME IS NOT COMPLETED
=================================================================

er(s) want to continue the game at a later time, choose Save and

Simply type in your question, backspacing over any mistakes. (The
cursor keys will not work in the Add Records Form. If you want
to edit a record, see "Editing Master Data Base File" below.)
For the question you have two lines, so you may have to adjust
the length and phrasing of your question to fit the lines. Also,
you'll have to make your own break at the end of the first line,
pressing <Enter> to go to next line. Then, add answers, making
one of the four correct, of course.
REMEMBER, YOU CAN ALWAYS BACKSPACE OVER MISTAKES. IF YOU DISCOV-
ER YOU WANT TO CHANGE ANYTHING IN A PREVIOUS LINE, BACKSPACE TO
THE BEGINNING OF THE FIELD YOU ARE IN, THEN PRESS CTRL-BACKSPACE
TO GO TO END OF WORDS IN PRECEDING LINE.
It is VERY IMPORTANT that you enter the Bible Reference in the
proper format: FIRST THREE LETTERS OF THE BOOK, SPACE, THEN CHAP-
TER AND VERSE (number, colon [:], verse). For examples, GEN
50:15, 1SA 20:5, PSA 119:105, 2CO 9:8, etc. Notice that numbered
books, for example I Chronicles, must be entered as a number and
first two letters of name (without space in between) as 1CH 7:14.
Book name abbreviations can be entered in UPPER OR LOWERCASE, for
example gen 3:15, Gen 3:15, and GEN 3:15 are all equally accept-
able. Following is a list of Book Name Abbreviations required by
this program:

For the Bible Subject field, enter a 1, 2, or 3, corresponding to
Bible Facts, Books of Bible, or Memory Verses, respectively.
When you are satisfied with your question data record, press
<Enter> to add record to MASTR.DAT file. Pressing the <Esc>
Key will return you to BIBLE MARATHON Data Base Menu, so be
careful NOT to press it, unless you do not want to save the
current question data record.
=================================================================
Making Data Files
To Make Data Files choose
M
from the Data Base Menu. In a few seconds the Subject Data Files
will be updated to reflect changes made in the MASTR.DAT file.
The Subject Files are named FACTS.DAT, BOOKS.DAT, AND VERSE.DAT,
respectively. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU UPDATE THE SUBJECT FILES
EACH TIME YOU MAKE ANY CHANGES TO THE MASTER FILE. OTHERWISE,
- Page 16 -
THE CHANGES WILL NOT BE INCLUDED IN THE SUBJECT FILES. THE SUB-
JECT FILES ARE USED IN THE BIBLE MARATHON PROGRAM WHEN YOU SELECT
A SUBJECT FROM THE SUBJECT MENU.
=================================================================
Editing Master Data Base File
IMPORTANT: the records are all numbered, the number being dis-
played in the upper right hand corner of the ADD and EDIT
SCREENS. This is the same number that is displayed in the BIBLE
MARATHON program, so that you can find records easily you want to
change. Using EDIT in this way, however, you are really browsing
through the records in the file, or examining the records one at
a time. To select a particular record number for editing (or de-
leting), please see following discussion.
To edit the MASTR.DAT file, press
E
at the BIBLE MARATHON Data Base Menu. This will display the Edit
Screen, which is very similar to the above diagram of the Add Re-
cords Form. The main difference is at the bottom of the screen
are the commands:
Ctrl+Bkspc=Back|Enter=Nxt|Esc=Exit|Ctrl+X=Delete|Ctrl+Enter=Save
In addition, you'll see the question field for record # 1. To
keep the record, simply press
<Ctrl> + <Enter>
(Press the Ctrl key and the Enter key at the same time.) To er-
ase record, press
<Ctrl> + X
after which you'll be prompted to confirm the deletion. Press
Y
and in a few seconds the record will be erased. Please wait
while the program updates the MASTR.DAT file. The program is re-
copying the MASTR.DAT file without the deleted record, and renum-
bering each record. You may want to edit the record, if possi-
ble, rather than delete it, since the program can inject the
edited record into the MASTR.DAT file without recopying, thus
saving time.
IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED THAT YOU KEEP A BACKUP COPY OF YOUR
MASTER DATA BASE FILE ("MASTR.DAT") IN CASE RECORDS INADVERTENTLY
GET ERASED, OR (HEAVEN FORBID!) YOUR HARD DISK CRASHES. THE
MASTR.DAT FILE IS THE HEART AND SOUL OF THE PROGRAM. SO, BE
CAREFUL TO PROTECT IT WITH ALL VIGILANCE!
To browse through your MASTR.DAT file, you can simply hold down
the
- Page 17 -
<Ctrl> + <Enter>
keys.
The Edit MASTR.DAT Records program has full word processing capa-
bility. You can use the following keys:
Left & right arrow keys = move cursor in the current line
Backspace = delete character to the left of cursor
Delete key to delete character at the cursor
Ctrl+Backspace will return to previous field (line)
Enter accepts changes.
>>>IMPORTANT<<<: When making changes to a line you must press
<Enter>
to accept changes. If Ctrl + Enter is pressed on a line that has
been changed. Changes to that line will not take effect. WHEN
MAKING CHANGES ALWAYS PRESS ENTER TO SAVE THAT LINE BEFORE SAVING
RECORD WITH CTRL + ENTER.
=================================================================
Selecting an Individual Record
Why you may want to select an individual record: you may have
been playing BIBLE MARATHON and noticed a record you want to de-
lete and reenter. Just note the record number and load BIBLE
MARATHON Data Base. At the Data Base Menu type
S
for Select Record. You'll then be prompted at the bottom of the
Menu to enter the number of the record you want to delete or look
at. Type a number between 1 to 9999 (the maximum number of al-
lowable records [questions] in the data base), then press <Enter>
and the record will instantly be displayed. You can then view,
edit, or delete it. When done press
<Esc>, <Ctrl> + <Enter>, or <Enter>
at the last field (subject field).
BE SURE AFTER EDITING MASTR.DAT FILE THAT YOU PRESS
M
FOR "MAKE DATA FILES" TO UPDATE YOUR SUBJECT DATA FILES TO RE-
FLECT CHANGES MADE TO THE MASTER FILE.
=================================================================
Find Word/String
You can have the BIBLE MARATHON Data Base program search for re-
- Page 18 -
cords containing a word or string you want to find. (A string is
a "string" of characters, which can include numbers and spaces
and punctuation, found in sequence in a record. A string can be
a word, a phrase, a scripture reference, like "JOH 3:16.") Even
punctuation marks, like quotation marks, can be searched for.
After pressing
F
at the menu, enter the characters you want to find, then press
<Enter>
to begin the search. All records containing that string of
characters will be found. The first record containing the search
string will be displayed. You can edit, delete, or print it, as
desired, or go to the next record found by pressing
<Ctrl> + <Enter>.
You can also search for records to print by using the Find
facility. (See "Printing Records" below.)
=================================================================
Bible Concordance
During installation you'll be asked if you have a Bible concord-
ance program. Bible Marathon does not have a concordance program
of its own, but you can run one from the Data Base menu by speci-
fying its startup command. For example, if you have On-Line Bible
your startup command might be C:\BIBLE\AV. This information will
be put in a file where the Data Base program can read it and load
the program from the D/B Menu.
=================================================================
Printing Records (Questions with Answers)
The Edit Program screen has, at the top middle, the words "F10 =
Print Record." To print that particular record, simply make sure
printer is on line, turned on, and paper is correctly positioned.
<F10>
prints the record.
To select records, press
S or F
at the menu. For, example, if you want to print all the records
that have to do with Moses, type "Moses" at the prompt, then
print the records one by one.
FOR ADVANCED USERS FAMILIAR WITH DOS:
If you want to print the subject data files, carefully rename the
MASTER.DAT file to another filename (e.g., "MASTR.SAV"), then re-
- Page 19 -
name the file you want to print MASTR.DAT. For example, if you
want to print records from the VERSE.DAT file, rename it
MASTR.DAT. At the DOS prompt type
REN VERSE.DAT MASTR.DAT <Enter>
