This is an "upgrade manual." It describes the differences between Alexi/Mail
and its predecessor, FreeMail 1.10. Anyone switching from FreeMail to A/Mail
should at least glance through it.
The changes are marked as to importance, with the same code used in the
CHANGE.LOG:
!! Item is very important to all users
** Moderately important, or important only on certain systems
++ Improvement or addition
## Bug-fix or correction
Minor change
---
** With Spitfire systems, FreeMail would ignore the NETMAIL flag on messages,
and export them regardless of its setting. A/Mail watches it, and will not
export messages with it off. To have A/Mail ignore the flag as FreeMail
did, use the IGNORENM option.
---
!! FreeMail used PolyXarc, Spaz, GUS, or a similar multi-format unarchiver to
unpack bundles. Alexi/Mail has that function built in (see the new ARCDEF
format for details). The multiple-unarchivers are no longer called or
needed.
---
!! Some options in FreeMail have not yet been implimented in Alexi/Mail. Most
of these will be added in future versions. If A/Mail complains about an
option:
1) Make sure it's spelled right;
2) Check the A/Mail docs to make sure it's available;
3) If it's supposed to work and doesn't, tell me! I need to know about
it to fix it!
---
++ When FreeMail ran into a badly damaged packet, the odds were high that it
would lock up (or reboot your system, or any number of other unpleasant
things). Alexi/Mail will not only continue to run, it will search the
packet for the next undamaged message, and continue on without a hiccup!
---
++ The new EXIT option allows you to specify what errorlevels A/Mail will
exit with when certain events happen. See the AMAIL.DOC file for details.
---
++ FreeMail would only allow one /AND line per area. Alexi/Mail allows as
many as you need.
---
!! ARCDEF has changed; please see the AMAIL.DOC for the new ARCDEF block
format.
---
!! Netmail areas are now defined in the AREAS.BBS file. They must have the
name NETMAIL. This allows you to put them anywhere, including secondary
Hudson bases (wasn't possible with FreeMail).
---
** Multiple Hudson bases are defined and used a different way; they must all
be defined in the AMAIL.CFG file, using the HMSGDIR option (see the docs),
and all but the first must have a "key," used to identify it. Examples:
; AMAIL.CFG file
HMSGDIR D:\Den\Hudson1=FIDO ; "key" is optional on first HMSGDIR
HMSGDIR D:\Den\Hudson2=PODS
; AREAS.BBS file
12 FIDO_SYSOP 1:109/5 ; Board #12 in first Hudson base
12@PODS PODS_SYSOP 93:9600/0 ; Board #12 in second Hudson base
++ Multiple Spitfire message bases (new in Alexi/Mail) use a similar format.
---
++ You can now tell Alexi/Mail to send its warning messages in any area, not
just netmail! See the new WARNAREA option for details.
---
++ The new LIMITADDRS option was added to allow total area-by-area control of
which of your addresses appear in the SEEN-BY lines.
---
!! Some options have slightly-changed names or syntax:
FreeMail Alexi/Mail
~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~
DUPES DUPEMSG
ARCDEF ARCDEF (new syntax)
MSGDIR HMSGDIR
ECHOSTAT REPORTSTATS (functionally similar)
TEMPFILE (unneeded)
MAILDIR (unneeded; defined in AREAS.BBS)
NETBOARD (unneeded; defined in AREAS.BBS)
SFNETBOARD (unneeded; defined in AREAS.BBS)
UNARC (unneeded; see new ARCDEF format)
ZONEPURE (unneeded; now automatic where possible)
A number of other options (THRESHOLD, PKTSIZE, ARCSIZE, etc) now have
intelligent default values, where they had no defaults before. The results
of these shouldn't be noticable in most cases, because they will usually
prevent the problems that would have caused you to notice them in the
first place. <grin>
---
** A number of FreeMail's options were available only for compatability with
previous versions of FreeMail, and were either noted as such in the
FreeMail docs, or completely undocumented by version 1.10. These have not
been implimented in A/Mail. Most of FreeMail's other options will be
included in A/Mail, but have not yet been, due to time constraints.
---
++ Alexi/Mail has gone through a *much* more intensive pre-release debugging
## than FreeMail ever had, and due to the new structure used in the
programming, it should have far less bugs to begin with.
---
++ FreeMail would allow the stripping of high-ASCII or control characters for
all areas; it had no way to control them separately for each area. A/Mail
understands the /STRIPHIGH, /STRIPCTL, /NOSTRIPHIGH, and /NOSTRIPCTL
control lines (in the AREAS.BBS file) as well; this allows you as much
control as you need over this function.
---
!! I'm sure there are some changes I've forgotten to mention. If you find
one, please let me know -- anything that will help a FreeMail user make
the switch should be included here. Enjoy!
