When you press [Alt+a], any previous attribute selection will be cancelled, and you may enter your new selection. A filtered display normally shows directories only if they pass the filter criteria. Use [^a] instead of [Alt+a] to choose how directories are handled. To select an attribute, press the corresponding letter key. Press once to select files which have the attribute ON; twice for files which have the attribute OFF; and a third time to deselect the attribute. When an attribute has been selected, the letter in the display heading will blink; a blinking upper case letter means the attribute must be ON; lower case means OFF. When you have selected the attribute combination you want, press [Enter]. If you have selected more than 1 attribute, a file must have ALL of those attributes set the same as your selection in order to qualify to be displayed (i.e., the attribute settings are "ANDed" by EDDY). For example, to display only files which are not "Hidden" and which have the "Archive" attribute (i.e., they've been changed since last backup), press [h] twice and [a] once. On the command line, "+hA" or "+Ah" has the same effect. The "+" tells EDDY attributes are selected; attributes can be in any order. - ═╣ Batch Operations ╠ In batch mode, you may COPY, MOVE, DELETE or DESTROY files. The desired command is specified on the command line, as a "numeric" option. The numbers used correspond to function keys used interactively... /5 - COPY files ([^F5]) /6 - MOVE files ([^F6]) /7 - DELETE files ([^F7]) /8 - DESTROY files ([Sh+^F7]) Other numeric options useful with batch mode... /1x - "x" defines sort sequence (E,D,N,S,T,U). Lowercase means inverted order /2xxxxxx - "x"s define Synchronization Control settings. Files will be processed in the sequence specified, and according to the settings of the Synchronization Controls - [PgDn] for more info on this. If sequence and Controls are not specified, the default values will be used. Attribute and/or timestamp filters may be used to select files in batch mode. Files with read-only, hidden or system attributes will not be processed in batch mode unless they are explicitly selected by an attribute filter. If a file to be copied or moved is "read-only" in the target, the command will proceed only if the file is also read-only in the working directory. Any error encountered will terminate EDDY, and "ERRORLEVEL" will be non-zero. ß═ ╣ Using Commands ╠ For most commands, just move the highlighted cursor line to the file you're interested in, and press the key for the command you want. Some of the most common command keys are... [F3] displays the file's contents (LOOK), OR... ...if the cursor is on a directory, displays that directory's files [F4] lets you modify the file's contents (PATCH) Other commands "tag" a file for later action. When you press [Enter], all tagged files will have the indicated action performed on them. For example: [F5] tags the file with "Copy" [F6] tags the file (or directory) with "Move" [F7] tags the file (or directory) with "Delete" MANY more commands are available. The decision is based upon a comparison of the target and working directories. Five cases are considered: 1. File not in target 2. File in target is older 3. File in target newer 4. Target file has same timestamp, different size 5. Same date/time/size For each of these cases, there is a Control. Each Control may be set to one of the values "Y", "N" or "C". "Y" means tag the file in working directory if this case is encountered; "N" means don't tag in this case. "C" means display the two directory entries, and wait for confirmation from the user. "C" applies to one-file commands - e.g., [F5] - and repeated ones - [^F5]. Thus, to COPY files updated since the corresponding file in the target, and alert you if any files in the target are newer, or a different size... Press [Alt+c], set the Controls to N,Y,C,C,N (default values are Y,Y,C,C,N) and press [^F5] to tag the files. Then [Enter] to do the actual copying. There is a 6th Control, which determines whether files in the target are con- sidered when tagging files for DELETE or DESTROY. This may be "Y" or "N". ═╣ Synchronization Controls (Batch) ╠ These Controls determine which files will be tagged for COPY/MOVE/DELETE when you use options /5, /6, /7 or /8. The decision is based upon a comparison of the target and working directories. Five cases are considered: 1. File not in target 2. File in target is older 3. File in target newer 4. Target file has same timestamp, different size 5. Same date/time/size For each of these cases, there is a Control. Each Control may be set to "Y", "N" or "C". "Y" means tag the file in working directory if the corresponding case is encountered; "N" means don't tag; and "C" means display a message to indicate the condition, and proceed without tagging the file. There is a 6th Control, which determines whether files in the target are con- sidered when tagging files for DELETE or DESTROY. This may be "Y" or "N". The Controls may be set by using option /2. If the default settings are correct, /2 is not needed. Normal defaults are Y,Y,C,C,N,N. Thus, to COPY files newer than corresponding files in the target, enter a command like... "EDDY/2n/5 C:\WORK A:" To DELETE files that are duplicates of those in the target, enter... "EDDY/2NNNNYY/7 C:\WORK A:" $╓═ ╣ COPY & MOVE ╠ +More info on COPY & MOVE: [PgDn] [F5] tags a file for "Copy". If the file is not in the target, the tag will be "Copy+". The actual COPY process will occur when you UPDATE ([Enter]). [F6] tags a file for "Move" (or "Move+"). MOVE works just like COPY, but also deletes the file from the working directory. You can also COPY and MOVE directories, with all contents, to a target on the same or other disk. Copied files normally keep their original timestamp. If you want to put the current date/time on files copied, use [^Enter] to start the UPDATE process. The Archive attribute is normally turned OFF in the working directory and ON in the target for files copied, if the working directory is a fixed disk and the target is a diskette. To leave the attribute unchanged, use option /A. Files may be tagged for copying with TAB expansion and/or BIT-stripping by pressing [Alt+0] or [Alt+b], respectively. [^F5] reviews all files in the working directory to decide whether to COPY or not. The decision is based on a comparison of timestamps on the files in the working and target directories, and the settings of the COPY/MOVE controls (described on the next HELP screen). [^F6] does the same for MOVE. ¥3═ ╣ Customizing ╠ To create a customized version of EDDY, type "EDDY/0 [work]". "EDDY.COM" must be in [work]. No directory editing, copying, etc. can be done when /0 is used. The following features may be customized: - Screen colors - [Alt+r] (note: [Alt+r] valid only during customizing) - Options - select via [Alt+o] or from the command line - Synchronization Controls - select via [Alt+c] - Sort sequence - use [Alt+d],+e],+h],+n],+s],+u] and/or [Alt+i] - Default point-n-shoot command - select via [Sh+F8] - Directory tree display - select via [Alt+w]/[Alt+t] - Attribute filter - select via [Alt+a]/[^a] - Mouse action/sensitivity - use [Alt+m]/[Alt+Sh+m] - LOOK mode bit-stripping, line-wrapping and TAB default settings in LOOK mode, use [Alt+b], [Alt+l] and [Alt+number], respectively - Hex/ASCII toggle key - in LOOK mode, [Sh+Tab] lets you select the key (normally [Tab]) used to toggle between hex and ASCII formats - Auto-scrolling speed - in LOOK mode, use [^PgUp]/[^PgDn] - Sector patching - [PgDn] for more info on this When everything is set the way you want it, press [Enter]. The customized copy, named EDDY.COM, will be written in your working directory with the settings you selected as defaults. The original EDDY will be renamed EDDY.OLD ═╣ DELETE or DESTROY Files ╠ With the cursor placed on the line of the display for the file you want to delete, press [F7] (or [Sh+F7] for "destroy"). The display will show that the file has been marked for deletion (or destruction) later. Subdirectories may be deleted also, even if not empty. "Destroy" means that the file will not only be deleted from the directory, but will be completely overwritten, so that the data in the file cannot be read or recovered. This is useful to protect sensitive or classified data. When a file is selected for deletion, any other changes you may have made to the file previously are undone. The actual deletion will be done at the time you enter UPDATE mode. At any time prior to entering UPDATE mode, you may change your mind and deselect the file by pressing [F2] - the UNDO command. [Alt+F7] "logically deletes" a file. This means that the file will be ignored during any of the repeated operations - [^F3] thru [^F7]. ═╣ Disk Sector PATCHing ╠ Patching disk sectors directly, particularly in the system area (boot sector, FAT, root), can make your data disappear or even make your disk unusable if you make a mistake. If you are SURE of what you're doing, it can be magic! This very powerful feature can be extremely dangerous in the hands of an inexperienced user, or worse, someone who is intent on doing damage. For this reason, some users prefer not to have the capability readily available, especially on machines that are used by more than one person. By creating a customized version of EDDY, you can PERMANENTLY disable the absolute sector patching feature. Just answer "n" when the question: "Allow disk PATCHing by sector in new EDDY (y/n)?" is asked, and the customized version will have this feature disabled. If you answer "y", you can change ANYTHING on a disk, including format data. Even if you customize again, using the disabled EDDY.COM as the master copy, sector patching cannot be re-enabled. Your original copy of EDDY.COM (or EDDY.OLD, after customizing), will still have the sector patching capability, so it should be kept safely on a floppy disk, tucked away where only you can get to it. H yA═╣ Disk Image Copy/Restore ╠ More info on disk-oriented operations: [PgDn] DISK IMAGE COPY... To copy an entire disk to a file, move the cursor to the "Drive" line (third line of the first screen) and press [Sh+F5]. The target must be on a separate drive. The disk image will be written to a file called "DRIVE.{x}" (where "x" is the source drive letter). The file will be 4 bytes longer than the source disk (6 bytes for hard disk), as the sector size and # of sectors are written at the beginning of the file, for checking format compatibility when restoring the file to a disk. To get a file that is an exact image your disk, use PATCH to delete these first bytes. DISK IMAGE RESTORE... A file built as described above may be restored to full disk format by copying it (in EDIT mode), using [Sh+F5]. The target disk must be same format as the original disk used to create the disk image file. When this command is used, the display will show "Copy image". The copying will be done when you enter UPDATE (press [Enter] from EDIT). [Sh+F5] cannot be used if any other COPY or MOVE operations are pending. ═╣ EDIT a File's Directory Entry ╠ Move the cursor to the file whose directory entry is to be changed, and type the new data directly over the old. Subdirectories can be edited, too. You can change filename, extension, date, time and attributes. Entries which you change are flagged by an "*" at the end of the line. An "*" also appears next to the field, except attributes (changes indicated by capital letters). If you enter a character that's not valid for the field, EDDY "beeps" and ignores it. If you try to leave a line where you have entered bad data (e.g., a blank filename), EDDY "beeps" and puts the cursor on the field in error. In addition to "type-over" editing, these editing commands are also provided: 1. [=] sets date & time fields equal to EDDY's internal timestamp values. 2. [Alt+equal] freezes EDDY's timestamp at date/time of current file or directory. [Alt+minus] restores use of the DOS date/time. 3. [+] toggles attribute byte values, and doesn't move the cursor. 4. [^y] & [^n] set the attribute byte for all files. Changes are made on disk only in UPDATE mode (press [Enter] from EDIT). Any time prior to entering UPDATE mode, to reset all fields to their original values, press [F2] for UNDO. [^F2] undoes all changes to all files. ═╣ Error Recovery for COPY/MOVE ╠ In case of a read error during a COPY or MOVE, EDDY offers four alternatives: 1 - Cancel the COPY/MOVE process for this file. 2 - Write a block (sector) of "#" bytes in the new copy of the file in place of the block that cannot be read. 3 - Accept the bad data, and write it to the new file. For nos. 2 or 3, the original and copied files will be the same size. 4 - Skip the bad block entirely, and write the next good block right after the previous block in the new copy. This obviously results in a new copy that is shorter than the original. After update, if any choice but no. 1 was selected, the message displayed for the file involved will be "copied(?)" or "moved(?)", to indicate that the new copy is not exactly the same as the original. Also, the timestamp on the new copy will always be the current date and time in this case. Suggestion: Choose no. 2, then rename the original and copy it again, using no. 3. This allows you to see where the bad data is, by looking at the first copy, and to see just how "bad" the data is, by looking at the second copy. If more than one error is found on a file, all will be treated in the same way, according to the alternative you select when the first is encountered. P═ ╣ Considerations for Copying/Moving Directories ╠ OVERWRITE Considerations... If there is a subdirectory in the target with the same name, when you UPDATE, the directory in the target AND ALL FILES AND SUBDIRECTORIES IN IT will be deleted first and then replaced by the directory being copied/moved and all ITS files and subdirectories. It is a complete replacement of the tree, with no checking or comparison of timestamps involved (except on the base node). "FAST MOVE" Considerations... When a directory is to be moved to another place on the same drive, and there is no directory of the same name already in the target, EDDY offers you the choice of doing a standard, file-by-file move or a move operation that is MUCH faster. With the standard move, you will see a file-by-file display of everything that's moved; with a "fast move", you'll see just the single line display of the directory name, and then the move is complete. Another difference is that EDDY uses some non-standard techniques to achieve this speed, while the file-by-file process uses only standard DOS services. These non-standard techniques are explained in EDDY.DOC, Section 12.4 If using non-standard techniques makes you nervous, stick with the file-by- file method; if you want speed, go with the "fast move" approach. $╓═ ╣ FIND String ╠ 2More info on FIND: [PgDn] Press [Alt+f] to enter a string to be searched for in the current file; [^f] to search all files in a directory (and optionally, all subdirectories) In LOOK mode, [f] or [/] repeats the previous find. An initial string is shown in hex and ASCII; new strings may be entered by "PATCH"ing the string that's displayed (initially, "_"). The end of the string to be used for the search is shown by "". To set the end at the current cursor position, press [End]. To begin the search for the string, press [Enter] or [^Enter]. [Enter] finds strings on a "close match" basis; i.e., either upper or lower case will be considered a match, blanks in the string will match any number of consecutive blanks, TABs, carriage returns and line feeds. [^Enter] finds only exact matches. To terminate a search, press [^c]. If the string is found, the 1st character of the matching string is displayed on the first line, highlighted and blinking. D DY═ ╣ FIND String ╠ If LOOK mode bit-stripping is turned on, bits will be stripped from the file data before the comparison with the search string. Two features are provided to make the search more flexible: 1. A "global match" character, which will match any byte in the file, may be specified by pressing [Alt+g]. This can be any character you like, except space. Default is "?". 2. A "don't match" attribute may be given to any byte in the search string string by pressing [Alt+k] and then typing the byte. A "don't match" byte is highlighted in reverse video, and will match any byte in the file NOT equal to it. Bytes are reset to normal matching if you type any character over them. If you want to search through all files, one after another, press [^f]. [Alt+r] initiates "FIND and REPLACE". For more info on this, [PgDn]. $)1 ┐\═╣ EDDY (EDit DirectorY) ╠ If you just type "EDDY" and press [Enter], you'll see this screen. Press [Esc], and EDDY will display the contents of the current default directory, sorted by filename. The format is similar to DIR's, with more information. Typing "EDDY ." and [Enter] has the same effect, without this initial screen. EDDY is ALL of the following... Full-screen directory editor Disk and directory manager Sector editor File finder ("where-is" utility) File viewer/patcher File backup utility Data recovery utility String finder/replacer (hex and/or ASCII) RAM editor DOS shell ...and MUCH more! Context-sensitive HELP is always available via [F1] Many features are customizable; among the advantages of customizing is that you don't have to look at this screen anymore, even if you just type "EDDY" ═╣ Moving the Cursor ╠ Some fields on the screen are "protected" so that the cursor can't be moved to that position. Instead, it will move to the next unprotected position. [j] - Jump to sector # [F2] - Unmark all sectors/clusters [F5] - Copy marked area to file in target * @w═ ╣ Marking ╠ You may "mark" parts of a file, disk or RAM that you are LOOKing at, and then extract (copy) the marked bytes, if you wish, to a file. Marking is done by pressing [m]. The first [m] produces a query as to the type of mark wanted: 1. "Byte" marks select a continuous range of bytes to be highlighted. 2. "Column" marks select a rectangular column, or "box" of bytes, defined by the diagonally-opposite corners (e.g., upper left/lower right). 3. "Disk" marks are used only when LOOKing at disk image data, and select full disk sectors or clusters. [PgDn] for more on this type of mark. After you choose the type, cursors will appear to let you select the byte to be marked. When you mark a 2nd byte, the range of bytes defined by the two you have chosen will be highlighted. If you later mark another byte, the marked range will be adjusted. [Alt+m] - Jump to first MARK, or last, if already at first [F2] - Cancel any marks currently in effect. [F5] - Copy marked bytes to file in target [Alt+F5] - Copy unmarked bytes to file in target (not used with RAM or disk) ═╣ Menus Make it Easy ╠ Press [Alt+F1] and a pull-down menu panel is displayed, as well as a menu bar across the top of the screen, with other menu topics to choose from. The menu panel lists commands which may be executed by EDDY. To the right of each command a "hot key" is shown. This key may be used to execute the command directly from EDDY, without using the menu. To select a command from the menu, you may: 1) press the highlighted letter for that command; or 2) move the cursor to the command and press [Enter] (or left click mouse); or 3) press the indicated "hot key" for the command (unless the hot key is shown enclosed by "< >", in which case the hot key cannot be used from the menu). Some lines on some panels show "(sub-menu)" instead of a hot key. If you choose one of these, another panel will be displayed, with commands relating to the subject you chose. These commands may be selected in the same 3 ways described above. If you don't want to choose a command, press [Esc] (or right click mouse). If the display is at the end of file, and there is space for more data on the screen, [Alt+z] adds a ^Z (end-of-file) byte to the file, making it longer. If you use [^Enter], you will be asked whether you want to update the file's timestamp; [Enter] always updates the timestamp to DOS's date/time. Make changes to the command (e.g., add switches, piping, or other parameters) and then press [Sh+F9] to execute the modified command. 3. Press [PgDn], to search for any other commands that may be defined in EDDY.USE and relating to the current file. #3 allows you to have multiple choices of commands in EDDY.USE for any file. When no more commands are found in EDDY.USE, the default (as you would get by pressing [Sh+F8] from EDIT mode) will be the last choice offered. For the default command (shown after [Sh+F8], or [PgDn] as described above), #1 and #2 are available (using [Sh+F8] instead of [Sh+F9], of course). Similarly, when executing a .BAT, .COM or .EXE file with [Alt+F9], choices #1 and #2 are available. EDDY.USE may be prepared with any ASCII text editor. ═ ╣ Data Recovery ╠ If you have a problem that can't be handled by "quick undelete" methods of other disk utilities, EDDY offers some capabilities to make the job easier... 1. Set the working directory to the directory which used to contain the file you want to recover, and LOOK at the disk. 2. Move the deleted filename (starts with "E5" or "05" hex) to the top, and press [Alt+d] to verify. If you don't find it, press [Alt+n] to move to the next cluster of the directory. If there are no more clusters, go to Step 4 3. With the filename at the top of the screen, press [Alt+s], to display the starting cluster of the deleted file. If the data looks as you expected, proceed to Step 5. Otherwise, the cluster has probably been re-used by DOS to store another file. In this case, continue with Step 4. 4. If you need this step, use FIND to locate your data, or press [Alt+u] to search the unallocated clusters for likely-looking data. When you find data you want to recover proceed to the next step. 5. Mark the selected cluster, using [m]. Look at the next cluster. If it looks right, mark it, too. If not, press [Enter] to write the data. 6. Find the next logical cluster, and repeat Step 5. Repeat 5 & 6 as needed. Your data will be in the "SECTORS.{x}" file (where "x" is the drive letter). ═╣ RENAME File or Directory ╠ To rename a file, just type the new name over the old (when option /F is ON). Option /F may be turned ON for all files by pressing [Alt+o] and then [f]. Or, option /F may be turned on for just the current file by pressing [Ins]. When option /F is ON, a "." appears between the filename and extension fields Note that the filename field and extension fields are separate in the display and must be typed separately. Any character which is valid for a filename, including blanks, may be used. If you type a "." while in the filename field, the cursor will move to the extension field. The filename may not be set to all blanks (although the extension may). When a change has been made to the filename or extension, an "*" will appear just to the right of the extension in the display. If option /F is OFF, renaming is inhibited, and the "Speed Search" feature is made available. In this case, typing in the name field tells EDDY to search for the first file which has a name which matches the current file's name, up to and including the character you just typed. When a file is renamed, the new name is used for any operations (such as COPY or COMPARE) that involve entries in both the working and target directories. ═╣ FIND and REPLACE ╠ To replace occurrences of the FIND string with a new string (the "REPLACE string"), press [Alt+r]. The FIND window will be expanded to allow entry of a REPLACE string in the lower portion of the window. REPLACE strings are entered exactly the same as FIND strings, and may be ASCII and/or hex. To switch between the two parts of the window, use [Up] and [Down]. To shrink the window back to its normal FIND-only size, press [Alt+r] again. If you begin the search with the expanded window on the screen, the REPLACE string will be written over any match found for the FIND string. When you begin the search, you will be asked whether you want EDDY to pause for you to confirm before replacing, or just to go ahead and make the replacement automatically. If the REPLACE string is shorter than the FIND string (e.g., with a "close" match that includes white space), the REPLACE string will be padded with trailing blanks as required to make the two strings the same length. A REPLACE string may not be longer than its corresponding FIND string.
