V1.2
Welcome to MEGAMIX, a multimedia experience from REALTECH.
Megamix is the *REALLY* first demo from REALTECH, a french (yes!) group
who decides to code this for ASSEMBLY 94.
This demo was very long to code because the (single) coder have to
learn a lot of assembler (particulary 386 assembler) and C++.
Here the final release. Last version didn't work on GUS and
a major XMS bug was found and demo should work better. Anyway,
the Surround is not available on GUS (because DSMI post-processing
the Surround Effect). In addition smoother 3D and animation .
Assembly 94 was quite cool, and I could meet a lot of people. So
In september, I'll have a modem, so contact will be better.
1: HOW TO RUN MEGAMIX ?
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
MEGAMIX needs about 2 Mb of memory and 386 or later system.
(a 4Mb and 486DX is suggested).
if you try on a lower system, MEGAMIX will display a message.
MEGAMIX needs XMS memory so be sure to have himem.sys or qemm.sys in your
config.sys you will need about 570 ko of conventionnal memory.
And MEGAMIX needs 2,7 Mb on hard drive.
* this config.sys should be sufficient:
[demoems]
device = himem.sys
rem | if you do not have a GUS, use this (but demo may run slower ..)
rem | by the way, qemm.sys is better for running with MEGAMIX
device = emm386.exe 1024 RAM
dos = high,umb
rem | umm, you can remove this but if you run with stacks=0,0, computer may
rem | crash ... î
stacks = 9,256
files = 30
buffers = 30
and nothing in you autoexec.bat
By the way, a CACHE (like HyperDSK or SuperCache+ may increase demo speed)
Don't try MEGAMIX under WINDOWS 3.11 or below or OS/2, you computer
may crash, or something nasty like this ... î
* if have NOT a GRAVIS ULTRASOUND , you will need EMS for memory for music,
else you needn't EMS (the demo will run a little faster ...).
With theses conditions , run LOADER.EXE (if you didn't do it yet ï)
If the sound card detection is correct (window on the bottom) you can
change sound quality with 'SOUND QUALITY CONFIGURATION'.
2: WHAT SOUND CARD CAN I USE ?
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
if you sound card is not detected, go to 'SOUND CARD CONFIGURATION' and
select one of the sound among 13(ï) differents sound card and answer
different question.
if you have no sound card, choose PC speaker, (but it sounds lousy !! î )
and try to purchase a *REAL* sound card. ( hum i've got a SB16 it quite
a good card but IT'S NOT 100 % Sound Blaster and SBPRO compatible ( try to
run a Future Crew demo's with SBPRO paramater, it won't play in stereo !!
GRAVIS Ultrasound (or the new GRAVIS MAX) is a good choice because it's
the new standard for PC's demos).
There's no possible to run MEGAMIX without sound because some parts
need play speed for running. Choose DAC for silence.
For the video card, a TSENG ET4000 or CIRRUS VLB is suggested (for the
last , MEGAMIX really screams ! ï ).
Try to avoid a TRIDENT card, or OAK if possible.
By the way, some VLB video card are optimized for Windows but under MS DOS,
they really crawl !.
3: WHAT'S MEANS THESES î and ï ?
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Ah , if you are reading with a normal viewer you some 'i' (because
I redefined the VGA font.
ï : Mr Happy
î : Mr Sad
there's are only emoticons. in fact, it's to warn you if the demo will
run properly or not(example : a TRIDENT card and a PC speaker, the demo
will be less fun.
4: WHO ARE REALTECH' MEMBERS ?
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
REALTECH members are french students, here's the exact list :
EXECOM (aka Stéphane DENIS): (21)
computer science student in Belfort (France) in 2nd years.
He creates REALTECH in 1993. But he always worked on PC (since 12 years)
and decided to create a demo. so he asks some people who can help him
for GFX and music.
GUEN (aka Romuald Genevois) (20)
in Beaux-Arts, very good artist and work all graphics for MEGAMIX.
FAIRLIGHT (aka Philippe Lucien) (17)
9 years in Conservatoire, only work on module compo since few months
but with Composd 669 then MMEDIT, he composes sound tracks for MEGAMIX
in 8 channels and thinking a lot for the stereo effects.
TOAL KNOR (aka Philippe Meisburger) (18)
Was on ATARI ST and composes some modules with MMEDIT. But good skill
in ray tracing.
He thinks about a music disk and a precalculated big demo with music
and sound effects for a CD-ROM magazine (DpTools ASC).
some others guys help me a lot , like Pascal Henck and Romain Sidiris
for some routines like 3D and textured mapping.
5: AND AFTER MEGAMIX WHAT NEXT ?
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
A multimedia player called RMP (stand for RealTech Module Player) which it
a module / FLI player using DSMI for music. and good news ,RMP will be
FREE ! (and it is really powerful with a lot of control on the sound).
It will released in SEPTEMBER 94.
We are planning on two games (which are on work) :
SUN RUNNER, shoot 'em up featuring parralax multi directionnal
scrolling and realtime sprite zoom , techno music (4->8 channels)
and a lot of awesome sounds effects in stereo. very impressive !
At least about more than 16 channels for the sound, always in Surround
and 44 khz on some card ! It will released for CHRISTMAS 94
(but probably later). and HEROES , an multi-players arcade game.
At least a music Disk for CHRISTMAS 94 (awesome !)
A demo for the PARTY ?
And we hope to release only 32 bits flat model programs in the future.
probably with DOS4GW.
6: ADDITIONNALS GREETZ
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Greetings go to : INFINY, HEMOROID, SCOOPEX, NUAGE, DUST, CASCADA IMPHOBIA
EMF (winner in demo compo).
here's the end of this text. SEE YA SOON !!!!
