  10. The Universal VESA VBE is a small Terminate and Stay Resident (TSR) program
  11. that extends the video BIOS of SuperVGA video cards to make them compatible
  12. with the Video Electonics Standards Association (VESA) recommended
  13. Video BIOS Extensions (VBE).
  14.  
  15. By having a video card that has a VESA VBE compatible BIOS, or by
  16. installing this small TSR, programs that support the VESA VBE programming
  17. interface will work correctly for your SuperVGA. This helps to solve a
  18. lot of problems with compatability between different SuperVGA cards on the
  19. market. Note that this program will not take advantage of any of the
  20. acceleration features that your video card may provide.

  22. I have also included two other useful TSR programs in this package. The
  23. first is one supplied by IBM for PS/2 machines with special SuperVGA
  24. chipsets, and the other is one to work with IBM XGA (and clone) adapters.
  25. Both of these are not yet directly supported by the Universal VESA VBE.

  27. Where to get the latest version
  28. -------------------------------

  30. You can probably download the latest version of the package from your
  31. local BBS, or you via the internet using ftp from Simtel20 or garbo (and
  32. their mirrors). However the absolute latest version will always be available
  33. from the following ftp site:

  40. You may make donations of any amount you wish to the author (note that
  41. if you are distributing the program with shareware or commercial software
  42. you MUST purchase a Software License Agreement - see the file 'copying' for
  43. details). By donating the following amounts you will recieve the following

  47.                     diskette.

  49.     US$50+ (A$70)   You will be sent the latest copy of the software on
  50.                     diskette, and will recieve information about the latest

  52.                     to be sent the latest update on diskette for US$10 (A$15)

  72. I have also included the xgaves.zip and ibmves.zip archives. These are
  73. freely available VESA VBE TSR's for the IBM XGA and IBM PS/2 machines.
  74. Support for these is not currently included in the Universal VESA VBE.

  79. Credits must be given where credits are due. Finn Thoegersen, the author
  80. of the VGADOC package has provided me with results and corrections for
  81. the code after testing it on more SuperVGA adapters than I could possibly
  82. hope for. His VGADOC package along with John Bridges VGAKIT provided the
  83. information without which this package would never have gotten started.
  84. The whole PC graphics community is deeply in his debt.

  86. Bob Pendleton must be thanked for originally suggesting that I try to
  87. convert the routines in the first versions of the SuperVGA kit into
  88. an installable VESA compliant TSR. Without his inspiration this thing
  89. would probably never have gotten started.

  91. Tom Ryan and Rod Dewell from VESA have also been an inspiration, and
  92. provided me with the oportunity to get the Universal VESA VBE working
  93. across the board through co-operation with the video card vendors
  94. themselves.
