  24. WASHINGTON, May 5, ICT --
  25.  
  26.         ICT is coordinating a national tour of torture implements
  27.         smuggled out of Tibet by Palden Gyatso, a 62 year old monk
  28.         and former prisoner of conscience.
  29.  
  30.         Palden Gyatso survived 24 years of imprisonment before be
  31.         was finally released in October of 1992.  His crime was
  32.         compiling news and writing pamphlets that criticized
  33.         Chinese policies in Tibet.
  34.  
  35.         "What they do is tie you up and suspend you from the
  36.         ceiling, like a light bulb. Then they beat you.  Your
  37.         hands are tied behind your back and when they hit the rope
  38.         with a stick, your nerves receive a shock, causing
  39.         uncontrollable urination and excretion. I had no freedom
  40.         to die.  That's how I suffered." says Palden in the PBS
  41.         film, Red Flag Over Tibet, which was aired earlier on
  42.         February 22.

  44.         Shortly before Palden was released, he was able to bribe
  45.         prison guards into selling him some torture instruments.
  46.         The instruments were paid for by his friends who also
  47.         realized the importance of showing the instruments to the
  48.         outside world.  Palden made the arduous trip through the
  49.         Himalayas with 20 kilograms of torture instruments on his
  50.         back.

  52.         Absence of proper travel documents has unfortunately made
  53.         it impossible for Palden to come to America for the time
  54.         being. However, a Dutch woman,  Francesca van Holthoon,
  55.         who has worked closely with Palden is coming to Washington
  56.         with the torture implements on the 6th of May.  Francesca
  57.         will be accompanying the implements during the tour.  Her
  58.         relationship with Palden and close knowledge of the
  59.         implements should be of invaluable help to all those
  60.         hosting events.
  61.  
  62.         Tibet Support Groups in 11 major U.S. cities will be
  63.         organizing  press conferences, talks, informal gatherings,
  64.         fund raisers, etc., featuring the torture implements.
  65.  
  66.  
  67.         Amnesty International is hosting a press conference in
  68.         Washington on May 13 featuring the torture implements.
  69.         Richard Gere, who spent time with Palden Gyatso in
  70.         Dharmsala, will also speak at the press conference.

  72.         ICT is coordinating the tour and providing the groups
  73.         with: sample press release, literature, photographs and
  74.         hopefully a video film, materials from Amnesty
  75.         International and back-up support.

  105. I. Tibet "Transformed": A Pictorial Essay Documenting China's
  106.    Colonization of Tibet. Published/Written by: ICT 30 pages, with 35
  107.    photos, a fold out and poster.  Cost: US$10.00 per copy plus $1.50

  110.    This report by ICT chronicles the effects of China's occupation
  111.    as reflected in China's development activities in the Lhasa
  112.    valley.  Lhasa's transformation from a traditional Tibetan city
  113.    into a Chinese metropolis with a heavy security presence is
  114.    brought out through comparison of official planning maps with
  115.    photographic panoramas and single frame shots taken in 1993.  The
  116.    30 page pictorial report has a breathtaking fold out panorama of
  117.    central Lhasa with all the important sites captioned and a large
  118.    four color poster of Lhasa city and Chinese planning maps for the
  119.    city.

  180. New Delhi, 3rd May:  The Tibetan spiritual leader, Dalai Lama ,
  181. Tuesday [3rd May] said "stray incidents", like the recent one
  182. involving local residents in Dharamsala, in the northern Indian
  183. state of Himachal Pradesh and Tibetans settled there would not be
  184. allowed to disrupt "the harmonious relationship" shared by Indians
  185. and Tibetans for the last three decades. Expressing sorrow at the
  186. "unfortunate" incident, the Dalai Lama, in a statement issued at
  187. Dharrnsala, said "the government of India, fully aware of our
  188. situation, granted asylum to Tibetan refugees and we are gratefil
  189. to the people and Indian government for their kindness and
  190. understanding".  He said: Immediately on my return I offer my
  191. condolences to the bereaved family of the young local resident who
  192. succumbed to injuries after an altercation with a Tibetan boy in
  193. Dharmsalan. The incident was "most unfortunaten, he said, and
  194. added "I was deeply pained to learn it".  "I am also very saddened
  195. to find widespread damage to Tibetan property caused by an unruly
  196. mob," he said, adding, however, I am extremely encouraged and
  197. proud of the fact that Tibetans acted with great restraint." The
  198. Dalai Lama said, "This has no doubt contributed to the speedy
  199. defusion of the tension." The Tibetan spiritual leader said he
  200. would discuss the "issues and grievances that have been raised by
  201. individuals in the recent developments" with his officials. "We
  202. shall take immediate action on those issues directly relating to
  203. Tibetans," he noted.

  211.     For some reason unknown to us, there has been an enormous
  212.     amount of speculation in Europe lately concerning the state of
  213.     our marriage. This all stems from a-very crude, ignorant and
  214.     libellous "article" in a French tabloid. We both feel quite
  215.     foolish responding to such nonsense, but since it seems to
  216.     have reached some sort of critical mass, here's our statement
  217.     to correct the falsehoods and rumours and hope it will
  218.     alleviate the;concerns of our friends and fans.
  219.  
  220.     We got married because we love each other and we decided to
  221.     make a life together. We are heterosexual and monogamous and
  222.     take our commitment to each other very seriously. There is not
  223.     and never .has been a pre-nuptial agreement of any kind.
  224.     Reports of a divorce, are totally false. There are no plans,
  225.     nor have there ever been any plans for divorce. We remain very
  226.     married. We both look forward to having a family. Richard is
  227.     not abandoning his career. He is starting a film in July with
  228.     others planned to follow.

  230.     We will continue to support "difficult" causes such as AIDS
  231.     research and treatment, Tibetan independence, cultural and
  232.     tribal survival, international Human Rights, Gay and Lesbian
  233.     Rights, ecology, leukaemia research and treatment,,democracy
  234.     movements, disarmament, non-violence and anything else we wish
  235.     to support irrespective of what the tabloids try to imbly.

  237.     Now, that said, we do feel we have a basic right to privacy
  238.     and deserve to have that respected like everyone else.
  239.     Marriage is hard enough without all this negative speculation.
  240.     Thoughts and words are very powerful, so please be
  241.     responsible, truthful and kind.
