Who-Dunit! *Interactive*
Version 5.04
*****NOTE: Support numbers have changed!******
The N.U.G.I. ConSorTium BBS number is 413-443-8788
FiDoNet 1:321/227
Voice support 413-442-7296 EST. Please don't call after 10:00pm
This program is considered shareware! In it's present form it will
allow unlimited people to sign on and play. I am asking $15.00 for the
registered version. Or you can opt for the $35.00 option will buy you
Who-Dunit, Terra-Firma Interactive Space War, The Enquirer Door, BUSTED!,
Pass it on and The Hacker!
Please include the Full name you used in the INSTALL.EXE, bbs name
and telephone number if you pay by check. My address is at the end of these
docs.
Or, call my bbs 413-443-8788 and use the Credit Card Door. Visa,
masterCard and American Express excepted.
I will upload your registration number to your bbs if you prefer this
method, NetMail or SnailMail.
With that out of the way, welcome to Who-Dunit SysOp Docs. Lets make
this short and pointless!
If you are upgrading from version 5.01 or under
you must restart the game. Just copy all the .EXE and .BSV files from the
new version over the old ones and run the INSTALL.EXE program.
***********
*IMPORTANT* With Version 5.02
***********
If you are a REGISTERED owner of any Previous NUGI game
the old REGISTERED KEY will no longer work! You must call
my BBS and leave me a note on how I can get a new key to
you. I will NetMail, SnailMail or upload it to your BBS.
Just give my bbs a call 413-443-8788 and let me know. I
will take care of you the same day. Voice 413-442-7296
Who-Dunit is now MULTINODE INTERACTIVE capable and will support Locked
ports up to Infinity. Who-Dunit is Multitasker aware and will support Avatar
/0+ . Who-Dunit will also auto-detect Fossil drivers or run on it's own comm
routines. Who-Dunit supports ALL comm ports and IRQ's 1-15. Who-Dunit will
write to the status bar what type of Multitasker it is running under.
1. Un-Arc the WHODUN54.ZIP file into it's own sub-directory. The name of
the sub-directory is unimportant. (Except to you <G>)
2. The following files will be un-arched.
WHOTEXT.DOC -------> Player Help File
HELPTWO.TXT -------> Second Help File
SYSOP.DOC -------> This File
WHODUNIT.EXE ------> WHODUNIT main program
RESTART.EXE -------> Initializes program
NIGHTLY.EXE -------> Must run once a night
FAME.DAT ----------> File of winners
INSTALL.EXE -------> Installation Program
LASTWIN.DAT -------> Name of the last Winner
SETUP.DAT ---------> Setup Data
PLAYERS.DAT--------> REQUIRED Game File
TEAMS.DAT----------> REQUIRED Game File
MESSAGES.DAT-------> REQUIRED Game File
WHODUNIT.CFG-------> REQUIRED Data File
WHATSNEW.DOC-------> Whats new in version 5.01
WELCOME.ANS--------> Welcome screen in ANSI
WELCOME.ASC--------> Welcome Screen in ASCII
SETUP.DOC ---------> Doc files for the Install program
DOORS.DAT ---------> Needed by INSTALL Program
PLAYDOCS.ZIP ------> Player online download file. Do Not unzip!
3. Run INSTALL.EXE and answer the questions. It comes with it's own
help screens in case you have any problems. This program will write a
WHODUNIT.CFG file. Once this is complete INSTALL.EXE will run the
RESTART.EXE program which will initilize the game files needed to run Who-
Dunit. Once this is done RESTART.EXE will run the NIGHTLY.EXE program
just to check everything out.
If you want to let your players use the ZMODEM player documentation
download from within Who-Dunit then you must have a copy of DSZ.EXE or .COM
in the Who-Dunit subdirectory or in your Autoexec.Bat Path..
Running the INSTALL program:
The first thing that comes up before the main input screen is
a menu of N.U.G.I. ConSorTium doors. Just choose the door game that you
are installing. I use the same INSTALL program for all my doors to keep
things as simple as possible.
Entry one is for your node number for which ever node you are setting
up this control file for. Single node BBS's can just enter a 1.
Entry two involves fossil control. If you enter a 0 here the game will
auto search for a fossil driver. If it finds one it will use the fossil
comm routines. If it doesn't find a fossil at startup. The game will use
it's own internal comm routines. This works very well in almost all cases.
I have had only two problems with it not working on certain systems and
configurations. If you are having a problem that consists of a game
showing up on the Local screen but not the remote then try entering a 1
in the fossil screen to force the door to use it's internal comm
routines. As I stated earlier I have only heard of two instances in four
years of this not working on certain systems. So use the 0......
The next entry concerns the handshake method that Terra will use to
deal with the remote modem. A 0 in this blank will tell Terra to use the
exsisting handshaking method that it finds at startup. In just about all
cases this should be the way to go. If you need to change the handshaking
method that Terra will use then 1 will give you Xon/Xoff software hand
shaking. 2 will use CTS/RTS hardware handshaking and 3 will use both. If
you don't understand any of this or you just could care less. Please use
enter a 0 in the blank for this screen.
If any of this sounds complicated don't worry about it. It is much
simpler than it sounds. Infact running and using the INSTALL program is
very straight forward. It comes with it's own help screens and most of
whats written here is just for reference incase you run into trouble.
Drop file entry. Enter The path to your BBS's drop file. This is the
spot most folks have trouble. Please double check your spelling and DOS
syntax. An example is provided to use as a guide for DOS syntax.
Sysop's First Name. Note that the First name should be entered here
exactly the same way as in the Registation Door on my BBS.
Enter Sysop's Last name. Again the last name entered should be exactly
the same as in the Registration door on my BBS.
If you want to enable the Zmodem download feature which many
players have asked me to include you must set this option to YES. Note
that you must have DSZ.EXE or DSZ.COM located in the Terra-Firma sub-
directory or some where in your AUTOEXEC.BAT's path command. I could
not include this Shareware program in the Terra Zip file due to legal
ramifications but it is available on most BBS's. If you use this option
with a non-standard IRQ then you must set your DOS DSZ environment
variable in your AutoExec.BAT file. For instance if you are using Com
Port 4 with an IRQ of 7 then entering the following line in your
autoexec.bat will allow DSZ to operate correctly SET DSZPORT=2E8 COMMA 7
See your DSZ docs for more info.
This option affords players the ease of downloading the
Player.doc file and the Whats.New file combined together into a small
.ZIP called TERRADOC.ZIP which comes within the TERRA800.ZIP. Many
players do not like to take the time it requires to study the Player
documentation while online. You should use a YES or NO here. This option
works only with Terra-Firma and Who-Dunit.
Registration NUMBER. You can register by check or credit card. If by
credit card you will receive your reg # within 1 week! If by check
you will receive your reg # as soon possible by voice phone. Netmail
or snail mail.
IRQ enrty. If you have set up a standard comm port with a NON-standard
IRQ number you must enter that number here. If you don't understand this
option or have never messed with your IRQ comm Port settings just leave
this as 0. If you do change your IRQ setting in the INSTALL program be
sure to see the DSZ info above.
You can enter any time limit between 10 and 90 minutes. If the
users BBS time left is lower than the ammount specified in the INSTALL
program then Terra will use the lower BBS time.
If you are running a NOVELL lan and experiance trouble loading one of my
door games enter a YES here. If you are not running NOVELL just enter NO.
You have just created the WHODUN?.CFG.CFG file. You will then be asked
if you would like to start a new game of Who-Dunit. If this is your
first time running Who-Dunit then answer yes. If you are just changing an
option and want the present game in operation to continue then answer
no. After the Install program runs the START program which
creates the WhoDunit world it will also run the NIGHTLY.EXE program once
to insure everything is set up properly.
Who-Dunit can read BBS DROP files from the following BBS's.
QuickBBS, Remote Access, RBBS, SuperBBS, Telegard, WildCat 3, PcBoard
(latest), GAP, WildCat BBS, Genesis, SpitFire, WWIV, Osiris, MAXIMUS,
FORCE! and other BBS software that uses a compatible format with one
mentioned above.
Door Drop Files:
CALLINFO.BBS
DORINFO?.DEF
SFDOOR.DAT
INFO.BBS
DOOR.SYS
CHAIN.TXT
PCBOARD.DAT
If your BBS does not write one of these files you will have to use a door
patch program of some type. If you are at a loss my BBS has several fine
Shareware programs of this nature for downloading.
****** IMPORTANT ******
4. You must run the NIGHTLY.EXE program once per night or however your
bbs program runs it's nightly events or maintenance. Who-Dunit will not
operate properly unless this is done!
****** READ ABOVE *****
5. Set up your batch file to call whodunit. For best results you should
copy your DROP file from the BBS sub-directory to the WHODUNIT sub-directory.
WHODUNIT.BAT ----------> Name of Bat file
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
CD\BBS\WHODUNIT ----------> Change to your directory of Who-Dunit!
WHODUNIT.EXE WHODUN1.CFG -----> Call Who-Dunit with the .CFG File that
the INSTALL program writes on the
Command line.
CD\BBS ----------> Whatever it takes to get back into bbs.
All you need to do is call the program and the WHODUN?.CFG file
together on the same line and you're set.
Who-Dunit will run locally with a default name of SysOp, if NO
CFG file can be found. Just type WHODUNIT LOCAL... Or if you want to use
your name local, edit a drop file and change the baud rate to 0 and the
comm port to 0. This method can also be used for more than one person to
play the game local. Then call WHODUNIT with the name of the .CFG file
that points to the doctored drop file.
Multitasking or Lan info:
I have tested Who-Dunit under Desk View and Windows for Multi-
taskers. Who-Dunit has also been tested running under Novel and LanTastic.
As long as you load DOS Share.exe you should have no problems. For Who-
Dunit to take advantage of message sending interactive play, all games
should be run from the same directory. You can enter the path information
for each nodes bbs drop file from the INSTALL program, so configuring Who Dun
for multinode play is simple. The INSTALL program will write a WHODUN1.CFG or
WHODUN2.CFG or any node number up to 15 that you specify in the Install
program. You just need to specify which .CFG file on the command line when
you call up Whodunit. Remember to set your DSZ environment variable as
explained in Option D above or the DSZ download feature will not work
properly if you are using NON-Standard IRQ's.
The following Keys are available to the SysOp while a user is on line.
Alt H = Hangs Up
Alt R or X = Returns to the BBS without hanging up
Alt C = Enters Chat Mode
Alt J = Jumps to DOS (Dos Shell)
Alt - = Subtract 1 minute from user time
Alt + = Add 1 minute to user time
That's it! The game is a very simple process of elimination. There
are two lists the players can call up during the game; one of the possible
murder weapons and one of the murder suspects. The player then moves from
room to room looking for suspects and weapons. If any are found the player
should add them to there detective notebook.
The registered version will allow players to send interactive messages
back and forth to each other. This makes giving another player the password
to your Team a breeze! Players online will also be able to copy from other
team members detective notebooks.
The weapon and suspect not found will be the murder and weapon used
in the Murder. The room that the murder was committed in must also be found
by the player. It can be discovered by moving through the mansion and
finding the room with the blood stains. Players will come upon peep-holes
which they can look through into other rooms. Players can also question
suspects to see if they have seen any weapons laying around at the cost of
three turns.
Players receive twenty (20) turns per day and cannot play again until
the following day. Who-Dunit moves pretty fast on my bbs. The Murder
usually is solved in five (5) to ten (10) days. There is a house detective
who gets to try and solve the murder once per day. (He is not very bright
and was trained by the Mayberry Police Department) so chances are in the
players favor of solving the crime first.
Have fun! If you need any assistance I can be reached on my bbs,
N.U.G.I., where the latest Who-Dunit and Terra-Firma program versions can
be found. (413)-443-8788. I also monitor the DOORWARE/DOORGAME echos in
FidoNet and NUGI has it's own Echo in DoorNet.
